This film is based on the Jnanapeetha Award winning epic novel of the same name, written by noted writer K Shivaram Karanth in 1968. The 50 years of this novel is commemorated through this film by eight-time national award winning director, P Sheshadri.
This film narrates the story of an Ajji (grandmother) who has some special powers which allows her to find the story behind any object just by touching and dreaming about it! These stories deal with the issues in society like child marriage, treachery, greediness etc. Ajji also gives quick and knowledgeable advice to people who ask her, thus making her the most loved person in her village!
The film beautifully unfolds itself with a simple narrative, holding the viewer's attention throughout the length of it. Each and every element which has gone in the making of this film is very pure and transparent. Almost the entire film uses the Kundapura Kannada accent, which in itself has a subtle charm to it.
The cinematography is a treat to watch, with the film teleporting you back into the 1960s. The coastal Karnataka architecture with the intricate wooden pillars and doors with chained latches, the calm river, the lush greenery dotted with huge trees, the coastal traditions and rituals like Bhootha Kola and the humble village life is shown beautifully through the camera lens. The music is also soothing and a treat to the ears.
The casting is brilliant with each of the actors having performed in a realistic manner. B Jayashree excels in her role as the adorable and wise Mookajji, Arvind Kuplikar gives a classic performance as the doting grandson, Shlagha Saligrama once again stands out with her innocence and sharp-witted dialogues in Kunda Kannada. Pragati Prabhu doles out an intense and heartwarming act.
To sum it up, this film is not something that you would get to see every other day. In fact it provides you with the essential life lessons that can help you soar to new heights! This is a masterpiece which you shouldn't dare to miss!
