“It’s a Very Unusual Situation”: ‘Almost Paradise’ Season 3 Gets Hopeful Update From Creator
Image
While it’s only been about a month since Amazon cancelled this Philippines’ beach crime show, there seems to still be hope for its rebirth. Almost Paradise, created by Dean Devlin and Gary Rosen, was scrapped back in April, half a decade following its premiere on WGN America; however, Devlin has amazing news for fans who have been rooting for its return. The co-creator confirmed to TV Insider that the series is currently being shopped to other broadcasters for a third season, meaning that in no time, fan-favorites Christian Kane, Samantha Richelle and Arthur Acuñawill grace our screens once again.

Almost Paradise had pretty good ratings despite being moved from WGN America to IMDb TV, which then became Amazon Freevee. And with the cancellation, Devlin finds it "unusual." He voiced so, while discussing the upcoming The Librarians: The Next Chapter, noting how popular Almost Paradise is, yet it has no new home.

‘Almost Paradise’ Canceled: Dean Devlin Says ‘We’re Looking for a New Home’
Image
Ex-DEA agent Alex Walker’s (Christian Kane) days working alongside the police in the Philippines are over. TV Insider has confirmed that Almost Paradise ended when Freevee did. But there may be hope. “We’re looking for a new home,” executive producer Dean Devlin tells us. “I’ve never had a show that was this successful and yet couldn’t stay at the same place more than one season.” He’s referring to the fact that the first season aired on WGN America in 2020, before it was picked up for its second by IMDb TV, which became Amazon Freevee, in February 2022. The 10-episode second season dropped on the streaming service in July 2023. “But it might be my most beloved show,” Devlin says. “It’s really interesting. And the people who love it, they’re not from any one demographic group. I mean, I’ve had professors at Ivy League...

Will There Be an ‘Almost Paradise’ Season 3?
Image
Alex Walker (Christian Kane) may be on a small tropical island in the Philippines after being forced into early retirement by the DEA, but we hope that Almost Paradise isn’t going to be by retired by Amazon’s Freevee! Now, the DEA’s most resourceful undercover operative runs the gift shop in a luxury resort hotel. That resort attracts the rich, powerful, and sometimes criminal elite from around the world — and they’re often on a collision course with Alex. Image
Fans of Leverage: Redemption are hoping to hear more about Season 3. Here's an update on when the show will return!

Leverage was a great hit for TNT when it debuted in 2008. The group pulls con games and thefts to bring down the rich and corrupt and give the proceeds to the victims of such crooks.

The show ran five seasons, ending in 2012. In 2021, Freevee revived it as Leverage: Redemption. The plotline was Nate had died and the rest of the team reunited with Noah Wyle as Harry, a former corporate lawyer who had seen the light to help them out. 2024 Emmy nominations ballot: See the 107 Best Drama Series hopefuls from ‘Ahsoka’ to ‘The Woman in the Wall’
Image
As TV academy voters fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they will have to consider 107 shows for Best Drama Series. This is down by 56 contenders compared to last year. As was the case in 2023, members may not allow their selections to exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be eight.

2023 Best Drama Series winner “Succession” and six of the seven also-rans are out of the current race because they did not air new episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 qualifying period. This leaves “The Crown” as the only 2023 nominee eligible for an immediate return, which could lead to its second victory here following its first in 2021.

Remember, only eight of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Which do you think will make the cut?

There is a significant change on the horizon for the series.

The First 48's Dave Walker, Brandon Watkins Break a TV Cliche
Image
The First 48 debunks common TV crime drama stereotypes because it has a less procedural focus than most true crime series. Sergeant Dave Walker and Lieutenant Brandon Watkins demonstrate different leadership styles that have each contributed to the success and growth of Tulsa Homicide. Walker and Watkins prove that their corresponding crime drama archetypes are outdated.

There are dozens of popular TV procedurals -- and then there's The First 48. Being a true crime series, the A&e show is obviously very different from the countless fictional versions of homicide detectives. Yet that difference is not just that one is scripted and the other one isn't. The First 48 has been able to highlight some of crime dramas' common tropes simply by raising awareness about how homicide really works. One of the most noticeable is the one that Tulsa Homicide supervisors Sergeant Dave Walker and Lieutenant Brandon Watkins regularly put to shame.

The first four seasons will be available to stream for free with ads, but if you've been keeping up with shows like Almost Paradise, then you're probably aware the ads are not as bad as they could be.

News of the show landing a new streaming home comes as the series prepares for its last-ever episodes on NBC.

Magnum P.I. has had a long and storied history, having begun its life on CBS.

At the time of its cancellation, observers and fans were shocked because the Hawaii-set drama was one of the network's most-watched shows.

This Fool's Bully Arc Calls Back to Training Day's Scariest Scene
Image
As Season 1 of This Fool unfolded, the protagonist, Julio, ran into many issues with his cousin, Luis. Despite getting out of prison and making it seem like he'd change his stubborn ways, Luis turned out to be as immature as ever. He kept causing trouble in Julio's prisoner reform program: the cupcake-baking project known as Hugs Not Thugs.

Not to mention, he was a whiny brat at home, annoying Julio to the point Julio wondered if they should part ways. In one key story away from Julio, though, Luis got his time to shine and prove to his family he wasn't a screw-up. And while he started off this job well, it quickly backfired as the Hulu series called back to Training Day's most harrowing sequence.

Almost Paradise Season 2 Easily Fixes a Procedural Trope
Image
The following contains spoilers for Almost Paradise Season 2, Episode 1, "The Magellan Cross," now streaming on Amazon Freevee.

Almost Paradise does many things differently than the average TV show -- including sidestepping some of the biggest conventions. The series is best known as a showcase for Christian Kane's incredible action skills, but it's also much more character-driven than it's given credit for. And in its second season, it's jumped a story hurdle that other shows in its subgenre usually don't find a satisfying resolution to.

In following Kane's character Alex Walker, Almost Paradise fits into the same general space as fan-favorites like Chuck, Lucifer, Psych and White Collar: an outsider helps law enforcement solve crimes. The main character usually creates friction with the cops or agents because of their conflicting approaches, but they work together because of a mutual goal and eventually, the hero becomes part of the team.

This interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike.

‘Almost Paradise’: Christian Kane on Stealing from ‘Leverage’ — and What He Finally Got to Say
Image
[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers from all of Almost Paradise Season 2.] “Let’s go steal…” Those are three words that every Leverage fan knows well but has never heard come out of Christian Kane‘s mouth — until his other Freevee series, Almost Paradise. In Season 2 (all 10 episodes of which are now available to stream), there are a few things that will be very familiar to Leverage (and Redemption) fans, from flashbacks with the stars in different roles to a casino heist, especially considering the common threads of Kane and executive producer Dean Devlin. “We didn’t really try to remind people of Leverage. We actually stole from Leverage,” Kane told TV Insider with a laugh. “Dean Devlin got his hands on that one, and he said, ‘Nope, this is Leverage, and we’re just going to make it Leverage.‘ And it was so much fun.” The star then went ...

Almost Paradise Season 2, Episode 1 Recap & Spoilers
Image
The following contains spoilers for Almost Paradise Season 2, Episode 1, "The Magellan Cross," now streaming on Amazon Freevee.

Since Almost Paradise has been away for literally years, it's no surprise that the series from Independence Day filmmaker Dean Devlin and Gary Rosen comes back with one of its biggest setpieces ever. A pair of bad guys break into the Sacred Heart Church, looking for the titular Magellan Cross. The terrified Father Gabriel informs them that the cross is not in the church, but when he tries to escape, he's stabbed in the gut. The panicked thugs set the place of worship on fire to make his death look like an accident. When a season starts with burning down a church, it's clear that the stakes have been raised.

Elsewhere, forcibly retired DEA agent Alex Walker is taking another physical, with his doctor saying he's made "real progress" in battling his hypertension since coming to the Philippines.

“Almost Paradise: Season 2” – TV Series Review
Image
(L to R) Art Acuña, Christian Kane, and Samantha Richelle star in “Almost Paradise.” Courtesy of Amazon/FreeVee

Christian Kane has played essentially the same character in four delightful light crime series. In “Leverage” and its successor, “Leverage: Redemption,” he was Elliot. In “The Librarians,” he was Jake. In this incarnation, “Almost Paradise: Season 2,” he’s Alex. All have some sort of military or intelligence background to prepare them for the current undertakings. Each time Kane’s character is smarter than he looks, does his thing with a grim sense of humor, and is tougher than all he must oppose. Underneath the surface of surly, he’s noble, loyal to his colleagues, and hell-bent on helping whoever needs it. He’s always reluctant to use violence but in just about every episode of each, he has to. And does it well. 180 times, collectively. Yet even after all those cloned outings,...

All 10 episodes will be available at once.
