Image
The long wait is over: David Mitchell and Robert Webb are officially back together on our screens. Channel 4 has released the first clip and image from Mitchell And Webb Are Not Helping, a brand-new sketch series that reunites the Peep Show and That Mitchell & Webb Look stars with the genre that made them icons. Set to premiere in September 2025, the six-part series features Mitchell and Webb leading a new generation of comedy talent in a chaotic blend of sharp satire, dry wit, and surreal silliness. Produced by That Mitchell & Webb Company in association with Big Talk Studios, the show is directed by longtime collaborator Gareth Edwards and marks the duo’s biggest return to sketch since That Mitchell & Webb Look ended over a decade ago.

Late-night host calls UK version of SNL a 'terrible idea'
Image
Plans for a British version of Saturday Night Live don't have one late-night TV host feeling too excited. The veteran comedian called the idea of exporting SNL to the UK a "terrible idea."

Last month, NBC announced Saturday Night Live would get a British edition, expected to premiere next year. While not the first international edition of SNL, the show will likely feature some of the same celebrities who have hosted Saturday Night Live in the United States.

But don't expect John Oliver to get involved. The Last Week Tonight host called the idea "terrible" during an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

"It just sounds like a bad ... we have had sketch comedy before," Oliver told Seth Meyers. "And it feels like Saturday Night Live is such a unique group. It's a cult."

Oliver continued, questioning how the "cult" of Saturday Night Live could transfer to a British version of the sketch show.

Channel 4 Greenlights Latest Russell T. Davies Drama & Reveals Long-Awaited Return of David Mitchell & Robert Webb Sketch Comedy Series
Image
Channel 4 is bringing back its big guns with a Russell T. Davies drama and the return of a David Mitchell and Robert Webb sketch comedy after 15 years.

It’s a Sin creator Davies is making Tip Toe for Channel 4, which the network describes as “exploring the most corrosive forces facing the LGBTQ+ community today.” The show follows Leo and Clive who live next door to each other in Manchester. Leo runs a bar, Clive’s an electrician, with two teenage sons. But just as life should be settling down, the world around them is growing more tense.

Speaking at a Channel 4 showcase this afternoon in London, Davies said the two leads, who he described as “big names,” are “lined up just not quite signed yet.”

Tip Toe returns to Manchester’s iconic Canal Street, made world famous by Davies’ 1990s hit Queer as Folk. On Tip Toe, he is...

10 Little-Known UK Sitcoms That US Viewers Need To Watch
Image
Don't overlook lesser-known British sitcoms - there are plenty of hilarious shows waiting to be discovered. British comedies may not have as many episodes as American ones, but they still offer unique and rewarding humor. From surreal adventures to heartwarming stories, British sitcoms like "The Mighty Boosh" and "Detectorists" offer a refreshing take on comedy.

Only a few British sitcoms make an impression in the United States, but there are plenty of hilarious shows which deserve bigger international audiences. While shows like Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and The Office have had plenty of success in America, this is merely the tip of the iceberg. British comedy doesn't always translate well overseas, so people don't often give lesser-known British sitcoms a chance.

Another reason that American audiences sometimes struggle to connect with British shows is that there are so few episodes. If someone is accustomed to sitcoms with upwards of 20 episodes per season,...

Daniel Kaluuya Tells Why He’s “Way Happier” in Industry After Feeling Like His “Identity Was in Other People’s Hands”
Image
Daniel Kaluuya says he’d “become what people around me wanted from me” in the industry, but says he’s now “way happier” after becoming more honest in his career.

The co-writer and co-director behind Netflix’s upcoming film, The Kitchen, recently spoke to GQ Magazine about how his latest film project encapsulates the kind of art that matters to him, as well as why he changed how he navigated his career following his work on Nope.

The Judas and the Black Messiah star said that he is now “way happier” than he was two years ago, specifically the period following his 2021 Oscar win, after realizing he wasn’t being honest as a person and artist. “It really felt like, look at me: I’ve got everything that you’re supposed to get. I’ve got everything that people would die for,” Kaluuya says. “And then I wasn’t happy.

10 Hollywood Stars Who Started Their Careers In British Sitcoms
Image
Some British and Irish actors started their careers in British comedy shows before making it big in Hollywood. Many of those actors have successfully transitioned to Hollywood, taking on both comedic and dramatic roles. Notable examples like Olivia Colman, Simon Pegg, and Martin Freeman have made a name for themselves in Hollywood, starring in acclaimed films and popular franchises.

It is common for British and Irish actors to make the journey across the pond to try and make it big in Hollywood, and many of them had their start in British comedy shows. British sitcoms tend to use a lot of slapstick comedy and dry humor, which is a big difference compared to a typical dramatic Hollywood film performance, but they do allow the actors to show off their range. Hollywood often sees the appeal in casting British actors, and it is not just for comedy roles.

The Most Widely Misquoted TV Lines
Image
Some television quotes take on a life of their own outside their TV shows. Whether it's a snappy one-liner or part of a lengthy, poignant speech, audiences warm to certain quotes and begin to use them in their day-to-day lives. This has grown even easier on the internet, as many TV show quotes have become memes and internet jokes. However, fanbases don't always get these quotes right.

The version of a TV quote that enters popular parlance and the internet lexicon isn't always what's said in the show. Many iconic lines are cut down, mistaken, or outright fabricated. In many instances, the attributed character never speaks the words.

Channel 4 Renews Crime Thriller ‘Before We Die’ for Season 2 (Exclusive)
Image
Channel 4 has renewed the Lesley Sharp-fronted crime thriller “Before We Die” — an English adaptation of a Swedish series, produced by the team behind Walter Presents.

Sharp will return as detective Hannah Laing, who joins forces with maverick detective Billy Murdoch (Vincent Regan) in a desperate bid to protect her son Christian (Gibson). Season 2 won’t follow the same storyline as its Swedish counterpart, which aired in 2019, but will see Hannah pitched directly against Dubravka, played by Kazia Pelka, the matriarch at the head of the Mimica Croatian crime family.

The adaptation is produced by Eagle Eye Drama, which was formed in late 2019 by Walter Iuzzolino, Jo McGrath and Jason Thorp, the creative team behind the global drama company Walter Presents. Channel 4 has a minority stake in the outfit, which began as the international drama showcase for the broadcaster and has since grown into an international niche streamer.

A Bit of Fry & Laurie (1987)
Tons Of BBC Shows Are Leaving Netflix UK This Month
A Bit of Fry & Laurie (1987)
One of the consequences of the BBC’s decision to start up their own streaming service (how dare they) is that a lot of their shows will soon be departing from their competitors.

Britbox, in partnership with ITV, launched in the UK last November, and now the content available elsewhere has started to catch up. Today we’re going to run through the wealth of titles that’ll exit Netflix UK at the end of March. There’s a lot to run down, too. And yes, this is redundant for American readers. You’re more than welcome to stay for tea, though (which is more than just a cultural stereotype).

First up – and probably of most interest – are the BBC comedies leaving on March 30th:

A Bit of Fry and Laurie (4 Seasons) Absolutely Fabulous (6 Seasons) Almost Royal (2 Seasons) Daniel Deronda (1 Season) Extras (2 Seasons) Fawlty Towers (2 Seasons) French and Saunders (6 Seasons...

‘Johnny English Strikes Again’ Film Review: Rowan Atkinson’s Third 007 Spoof is Shaky, Not Stirring
Despite the halfhearted mystery propelling its plot, the primary question that floats above “Johnny English Strikes Again” is … “Why?”

It is true that its two predecessors — “Johnny English” and “Johnny English Reborn” — did remarkably well overseas. (Americans remained flatly immune.) So clearly, there are still loyal Rowan Atkinson fans out there. But if you’re determined to recycle one of his characters over and over, wouldn’t the beloved Mr. Bean or Blackadder make more sense than a James Bond parody made up for British credit card ads? At the very least, doesn’t he, and don’t his fans, deserve better material?

What’s particularly disappointing about this effort is the amount of talent wasted. In addition to the always-game Atkinson, we’ve got accomplished BBC comedy director David Kerr (“That Mitchell and Webb Look”) and screenwriter William Davies (“How to Train Your Dragon”). And also, rather curiously, Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon.

Who Is the Greatest Actress In the World? — IndieWire Critics Survey
Isabelle Huppert at an event for A Visitante Francesa (2012)
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question:

Last Friday saw the release of Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Things to Come,” one of two new films starring Isabelle Huppert. In the lede of his review for The New York Times, A.O. Scott asked “Isabelle Huppert: Great actress, or greatest actress?” Huppert is certainly near the very top of the list, but we thought we’d take this opportunity to open the question to our panel of critics: Who is the best working actress in the world today?

Richard Brody (@tnyfrontrow), The New Yorker

Russell T Davies adapting A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Russell T Davies is returning to the BBC's Cardiff base to adapt William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream…

Here’s an exciting one. Doctor Who legend Russell T Davies is returning to the BBC (and to Cardiff’s Doctor Who base!), to put his spin on another bastion of British culture – he’s adapting William Shakespeare.

Specifically, Russell T Davies is working on the script for a 90-minute adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His adaptation – which will be directed by David Kerr (Inside No. 9, That Mitchell And Webb Look, Fresh Meat) – is going by the title The Dream.

Although it’s being adapted by Davies, this new staging of the iconic comedy play has been described as ‘a truthful version […] the original play, the original words, the original Shakespeare. Warm and funny, it will have as much attitude and invention as any theatrical interpretation.’

10 Unexpected Sitcom Scenes That Made Us Bawl Our Eyes Out
Channel 4

If you watch a moving episode of a drama, it’s usually fairly easy to deal with; writers tend to build up to these things, signpost the tragedy along the way, and then watch you turn into a wreck come the credits.

Sitcoms have different rules when it comes to crying though; they catch you off-guard because they’re simply not there to make you cry and the result is often increased because of that. They over-riding agenda, of course is to do the opposite, obviously. And bearing in mind that, a lot of the time, there’s not all that much difference between the poignant and the completely ridiculous, it can be difficult to guess when writers are going to pull out a tearjerker.

But which are the most devastatingly sad moments of sitcom history? To answer that particular query, we’ve put together ten scenes that reduced us to quivering,...

Olivia Colman on How to Build a Better Murder Mystery, 'Broadchurch' and Proving She's Not Just a Funny Lady
David Mitchell
Olivia Colman's should be a familiar face to any fan of British comedy, particularly the work of David Mitchell and Robert Webb, whom Colman worked with on their sketch show "That Mitchell and Webb Look" and on sitcom "Peep Show," playing Sophie Chapman, the coworker, object of lust and eventual long-suffering girlfriend of Mitchell's Mark Corrigan. While Colman's still doing funny stuff -- she plays the supportive spouse of Tom Hollander's floundering inner-city vicar Adam Smallbone in "Rev." -- the past few years have found her proving her talent for drama in a series of wrenching roles. She won multiple awards as battered wife Hannah in Paddy Considine's 2011 directorial debut "Tyrannosaur," acted alongside Meryl Streep as Carol Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" and earlier this year received BAFTAs for both her parts in BBC anthology series "Accused" and Olympics mockumentary "Twenty Twelve." Olivia Colman: 'It's slightly scary, the tall poppy syndrome. It could all go wrong'
With Run, a bleak new TV series, about to start, the actor talks about playing downtrodden women, messing up on stage and being called 'divinely gifted' by Meryl Streep

Olivia Colman is insufferable. We've been sitting for an hour on the balcony of the Ritzy cinema in south London and she's given me nothing but unremitting cheeriness. Doesn't she realise I need dirt, self-disgust and something really vile about working with Rose Byrne on I Give it a Year and/or Bill Murray on Hyde Park on the Hudson? She's even managed to be positive about the view. "Look at those gorgeous trees," she says of the espalliered Parisian-style Brixton avenue below. "How do they make those trees square?" Vigorous and regular pruning, no doubt, I reply glumly. "Lovely aren't they, though," she says, with that sunny smile that bewitched viewers when she won two Baftas in May.

She's been...

Five Youtube Videos to Brighten Your Week
Welcome to the first Youtube installment of November, oh how time flies. Soon I’ll be awaiting my tsunami of Christmas fan-mail, and I cannot wait!

This week I’ve assembled videos which show off the hiding abilities of spiders; the comedic genius of David Mitchell; the incredibly stupid police AI in GTA:iv; the ability of a whole host of animals to play dead; and a superb short film based on a video-game viral hit.

Click away!

5. Hiding Spider

This video is short and sweet. Oh, and hilarious.

It’s shows a spider, in a glass box, attempting to hide in the sand which presumably replicates its natural habitat. Watching this in mute, or from afar, you’d be forgiven for thinking it an educational tool – and perhaps it was, originally.

But this particular clip is narrated wonderfully, from the point of view of the spider, as it attempts to conceal itself from view.

They find the ship is a derelict space ark, originally from Earth, created by the Silurians. But where are they, and how did a mysterious and heartless trader named Solomon get control of the ship?

Arthur Darvill had it exactly right when he discusses the latest episode of Doctor Who in a promotional video – “It does what it says on the tin”. The Doctor’s got a gang, Amy has her own companions, Rory’s got his dad, Rory’s dad’s got balls in his pants, the ship’s got a surprising builder,...

Hugh Laurie (House M.D.) and Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta) will lend their voices to the animated Oscar Wilde adaptation, The Canterville Ghost. Wilde's novella, set in late 1800s rural England, tells of the Otises, an American family that moves in to Canterville Chase, an old country house. Sir Simon de Canterville (Fry) has been haunting the residence for hundreds of years alongside his resident nemesis, Death (Laurie) in the guise of a lowly gardener. Comedic stars of the 80s and 90s series, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, the duo have collaborated on a number of projects; this will be their first such reunion in 13 years. Hit the jump for more on The Canterville Ghost. THR reports that Kim Burdon is set to direct the animated project from an adaptation by Keiron Self and Giles New, both of That Mitchell and Webb Look. Fry & Laurie Re-Team For Wilde's "Ghost"
Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, before they went on to become an American TV star and a British national treasure respectively, were best known for their work together as a comedic team back in the 80's be it their own sketch show to their memorable turns in "Blackadder".

Now the duo are reuniting for an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's "The Canterville Ghost" in which they'll be voicing characters. Fry himself broke the news through his Twitter feed (via Empire) saying "M'coll Hugh & I will be working together to voice the new animated feature of Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost."

Melmoth Films is currently seeking financing for the project which "That Mitchell And Webb Look" co-writers Keiron Self and Giles New are adapting.

The ever-enigmatic and brilliant pairing of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie will be reuniting once more!

River Jordan: Cross-Cultural Pollination and Tragedy
If you ever want to, you can take any history book, cross out the title and scribble “Why The British Are Dicks” on it and it would suffer no loss in its accuracy. Most history after 1600 can be attributed to explaining the meaning of that sentence; Britain and France were the biggest colonial powers in the last couple centuries, and when they started to realize that they couldn’t actually tell others what to do, they mashed a few cookie cutters on a globe and created a whole bunch of countries that quickly fell into ethnic civil war because their borders were based on the location of natural resources and not tribal boundaries. Ergo, the common governments that were set up by imperialism became mechanisms for conflict as different ethnic groups fought to control it for their own interests.

Oh don’t get me wrong, the British and French produce...

Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week
Stargate Universe starts again from the beginning, while That Mitchell and Webb Look and Misfits repeats end. Plus - lots of movies to watch out for!

The next seven days are full of final sips and refills beginning tomorrow morning, Saturday August 14th with a repeat broadcast from the first moments of Stargate Universe. Geek shows and movies on UK TV in the coming week
Dexter, Misfits and That Mitchell And Webb Look are some of the highlights of the UK TV week. Plus there's a whole lot of good movies to watch...

With the finish of Ashes To Ashes and Doctor Who in weeks past, there isn't much gripping television to look forward to come the weekends, until the new seasonal schedules start up.

But does that mean we'll shut off our tellies and rush into the sunshine for fresh air and exercise? No. No, it does not. Instead we've put our energy into scouring the schedules to find anything to replace those Uv rays with TV signals.

Those who are catching up or reliving (although that's probably a poor choice of words) the antics of our favourite carver, Dexter, can move with him and his blades, plastic sheeting and rolls of tape to the third season, being reshown on FX. Season opener, Our Father,...

Webb 'bored of returning characters'
Robert Webb
Robert Webb has admitted that he gets bored with returning characters on his sketch show. The comedian, who stars in That Mitchell And Webb Look with David Mitchell, told The Daily Telegraph that he likes exploring different situations. "To make a successful sketch show it has been scientifically proven that you have to give audiences returning characters," he said. "But David and I are bored by returning characters. Every so often there are some we like and we do them for a bit but it's not our thing." He added: "What's useful is that we find lots of different things funny. Dressing up as a banana and prancing around is as likely to tickle us, if it's done well, as the cleverest bit of dialogue in the play The Philadelphia Story." (more)...

I'm not at my best right now because I really really want to take a nap. Walking at least two miles a day between my house and campus sucks way more than biking the same amount. If I happen to get my hands on whoever stole my bike, they're getting a kick in the nuts and/or ovaries (hey, this is Miami) with my left foot because my right ankle is currently attempting to throw in the towel and could not be counted on to carry out such an important task without causing me undue pain. Also I'm way more aware of the creepy drivers who slow down to look at me now that I'm not trying to keep myself from running into telephone poles. And look, I'm sure there may be one couple out there whose story starts with "Well, I was walking down the street one day and...

Pajiba After Dark 4/7/10
Apparently this week things started heating up in areas of the country that are not located in a sub-tropical climate and I've seen some complaints on the internet. It got up to 80º F! The horror! It's like it's June already! Listen, I get that it's a pretty big difference from normal spring weather, but color me unimpressed. High 70s to mid 80s Is spring here in Miami. We're all still wearing long pants and jackets in the evenings. (Also, I went to weather.com to confirm the weather here and there's an amusing glitch that shows tomorrow's low temperature as 32º. I know it's a glitch because I panicked and checked two other sources to make sure that wasn't true, so it was more "scary" than "amusing" for about a minute there.) Anyway, y'all can get me back when the humidity hits about 1,000% in early May and I'm trying to grow gills.

Fantastically Absurd: An Advance Review of Season Three of BBC America's "That Mitchell and Webb Look"
Sir Digby Chicken Caesar. Dr. Death. The Lazy Writers. Those guys who look like Mitchell and Webb but are, um, far more conceited. These are but a few of the memorable characters created by David Mitchell and Robert Webb (Peep Show) on their gleefully subversive sketch comedy series, That Mitchell and Webb Look, which finally returns to BBC America after a far too long absence. As a longtime viewer and Numberwang-obsessive, I've long waited for BBC America to bring this winning series back to the airwaves in America and my high anticipation was well rewarded when I sat down last night to watch the first three episodes of Season Three of That Mitchell and Webb Look, supplied by the network for review. Along with some much beloved returning sketches including the snooker commentators as well as the aforementioned Sir Digby Chicken Caesar and Ginger and the Lazy Writers, Mitchell and...
