Madonna Netflix Limited Series in the Works; Shawn Levy to Direct
Image
Madonna is the original "Material Girl" and has inspired generations of artists to step outside the box. In order to achieve her massive success, the global superstar had to endure harsh scrutiny that stemmed from her music being labeled seductive and inappropriate. Now, she's ready to tell her story, with a little help from a major streaming service and an Academy Award nominee. According to Deadline, Madonna has partnered with Netflix to turn her story into a limited series about her life and music. The project is still in early development.

She and Stranger Things' Shawn Levy will executive produce, as his entertainment company, 21 Laps Entertainment, has an exclusive TV overall deal with the streaming service. While a representative for Netflix declined to comment, Deadline said that the duo have been in talks about the production for a while and are starting from scratch. Meaning, the project is not...

'Star Wars: Starfighter' Director Shawn Levy Learned a Lot From Working on Netflix Hit 'Stranger Things'
Image
Star Wars fans, don't expect any details about Star Wars: Starfighter to be spoiled any time soon. The latest director to enter the Star Warsfranchise and march to the tune of John Williams' signature score has revealed a very important lesson that he learned when making Stranger Things. Shawn Levy has been playing a key part behind the camera since the beginning of the Netflix fantasy horror hit, and now that he's been announced to tackle one of the upcoming Star Wars movies, Levy says that the very popular series taught him to stay quiet and not spill any details.

The director, also famous for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine and the Night at the Museum franchise, spoke to Variety during the premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the play that serves as a prequel to the Netflix show. Levy was recently announced as the director of Star Wars: Starfighter,...

Toys "R" Us Is Getting a Live-Action Movie in the Vein of 'Night at the Museum'
Image
That sound you heard was the collective tug at the nostalgic heartstrings of Gen Xers and Millennials all across America. Toys "R" Us, the beloved toy store and private equity victim, is getting new life on the silver screen as production company Story Kitchen and Toys "R" Us Studios are working on a movie about the whimsical retail chain. The live-action film is said to be in the vein of Night at the Museum, Big, and other toy-inspired movies of yesteryear, like Jumanji and Barbie.

Story Kitchen, which is a newer production company, is the brainchild of John Wick writer-creator Derek Kolstad, Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dmitri M. Johnson and former APA partner Mike Goldberg. The team has been pretty successful at adapting non-traditional IP such as video games with Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog franchise and is currently developing the Tomb Raider franchise, which includes the animated TV series...

Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Gallagher, Mizuo Peck, Rami Malek, and Crystal the Monkey in Uma Noite no Museu (2006)
Toys R Us is becoming a movie, as Hollywood continues to champion massive companies
Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Gallagher, Mizuo Peck, Rami Malek, and Crystal the Monkey in Uma Noite no Museu (2006)
The once-bankrupt Toys R Us is now going to be a movie, possibly more than one movie. More on the story right here.

The film part of this story first.

Toys R Us Studios and Story Kitchen are coming together to make a live action movie about, well, Toys R Us. There’s a reasonable film idea too in the idea of something akin to a toy shop coming to life, and already one of the touchpoints cited by the producers is the Night At The Museum series. Further names such as Jumanji, Back To The Future, Big and – of course – Barbie have popped up in stories about the new film.

The non-film part is Hollywood’s current fixation with the altar of big business for its storytelling. Not just the products of big business a la Barbie, but the big names themselves. Blackberry is as good as these productions have got.

We’re Not Playing, Toys ‘R’ Us Is Getting a Live-Action Movie
Image
Hollywood is fighting an addiction and it’s losing. The success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has sparked a movement that has seen the announcement of other toy-based projects and — to no one’s surprise — yet another is on the way. According to Variety, Story Kitchen is pairing up with Toys 'R' Us Studios to bring the world something that none of us asked for — a live-action film. No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. This project will somehow be a live-action movie about the chain of stores that has been struggling financially for a number of years.

From the original report, the movie is looking to harness favorites like Night at the Museum, Big, Jumanji, and other beloved titles to pull its plot together. Essentially, the production will lean heavily on the nostalgia factor that comes with the store’s name, pandering to the millennial crowd, with Story Kitchen...

'Nobody Would Give Me an Oscar': Dick Van Dyke, 99, Says He Still Hopes to Win Academy Award
Image
Dick Van Dyke says he isn't giving up hope of winning an Oscar at age 99. The Mary Poppins actor has never received an Oscar nomination in his incredible 78-year career.

Van Dyke and his wife Arlene Silver gave an interview to People where they addressed the actor's ambitions as he nears his 100th birthday in December 2025. He noted that he's won every major Hollywood award "except an Oscar."

Dick Van Dyke Reveals His Hopes for an Oscar Win at 99

"Nobody would give me an Oscar," he joked, before adding: "My buddy, I was a friend of Stan Laurel's and he got one. Not posthumously."

Silver mentioned that all of Van Dyke's "idols" — Gene Kelly, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton— won Oscars throughout their careers, before predicting: "[Dick] will get one."

Van Dyke is one Oscar away from completing the prestigious Egot — an entertainment industry nickname for those who have won an Emmy Award,...

Star Wars: Starfighter – Shawn Levy Lucasfilm movie with Ryan Gosling has a release date + Mandalorian & Grogu footage screened
Ryan Gosling at an event for Rio Perdido (2014)
We’re going back to a galaxy far, far away – and this time on the big screen with some bona fide A-listers attached. Indeed, Lucasfilm and Disney announced during Star Wars Celebration that their long-rumoured new addition to the franchise starring Ryan Gosling, and directed by Shawn Levy, is officially going forward, and will be hitting theatres sooner than you think. The film, Star Wars: Starfighter, is set for a May 28, 2027, release, which is almost one year to the day following their first Star Wars movie in seven years, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which has a May 22, 2026, release date.

The move marks a strong shift in Disney’s approach to making Star Wars content, which has been mostly consigned to streaming series as of late. Many new shows, such as The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew, fell flat with fans and performed weakly, making it seem like this is more of...

'1 of My Core Memories': Night at the Museum's Child Actor Recalls Working With Ben Stiller 19 Years Later
Image
Original Night at the Museum star Jacob Cherry opens up about his heartwarming experiences on the movie set.

Speaking to People, Cherry, who portrayed Nick Daley, the son of Ben Stiller's Larry, sang high praises of his Night at the Museum co-star. "[Ben] was really, the best way to put it is, just a normal guy," Cherry said. "One of my core memories – he showed me a Tenacious D music video, and he has a cameo in it. And he was so hyped that he was in this cameo… so just stuff like that. I got to see him as just like a normal person. There was no mask or anything like that."

Based on Milan Trenc's 1993 children's book, Night at the Museum premiered in 2006 and quickly established itself as a fan-favorite, family-friendly comedy. The film starred Stiller as Larry Daley, a night-shift security guard at the American Museum...

Ben Stiller Says ‘Severance’ Fanbase is ‘Pretty Crazy’ but ‘I’m Trying to Make Everyone Love Me’ | Video
Image
Ben Stiller has an appreciation for the “pretty crazy” fanbase that follows every second of the Apple TV series “Severance” — and the show’s executive producer and frequent director is hoping that every single member will eventually love him.

During an interview on “Chicken Shop Date” released Friday, Stiller told host Amelia Dimoldenberg of the show’s fans, “I think I enjoy how deeply people get into the, you know, into the theorizing of what means what and how every little thing. I mean, it’s pretty crazy.”

“And I also like the people who will then say, like, I have no idea what the hell is going on and what are the goats, and, you know, just have an actual thing happen in the show, please,” he also said.

After Dimoldenberg described the response as “very diplomatic” Stiller conceded, “I am trying to make everybody love me.”

Dimoldenberg also...

Drop's Incredible Screenplay Learned Every Lesson Die Hard Taught Us Decades Ago
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In their invaluable book "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit," authors Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (former members of "The State" and writers of hit films like "Night at the Museum" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded") had a few pieces of immutable advice for aspiring screenwriters hoping to make a living in Hollywood. Importantly, they advised that writers should never hang all your dreams on a single screenplay, and they should be able to toss aside a script if it gets turned down. They also advised that writers say, "Yes, I can do that," to every single studio note, no matter how ridiculous. They wanted to ensure that an ambitious should churn out as much work as possible, and worry more about "entertainment" than "art."

Perhaps most crucially, an aspiring screenwriter should watch "Die Hard" over and over and over again.

Pam Levine Joining Netflix As VP U.S. & Canada Marketing & Publicity
Image
Exclusive: Pam Levine, who recently exited Disney Branded Television and National Geographic as Head of Marketing, is going to Netflix as VP, Ucan Marketing & Publicity. This executive move, I understand, was always in the works for a while.

At Netflix, Levine will oversee all publicity and marketing for U.S. and Canada film and series, and report to chief marketing officer Marian Lee.

An internal memo about this is imminent, I hear, at the streamer.

In the role, she led an integrated internal agency that spanned brand and creative marketing, strategy, publicity, media planning, digital/social, events, talent relations and awards, supporting content created for Disney+ as well as the Disney- and National Geographic-branded linear networks.

Her big campaigns at Disney Branded Television included Percy Jackson & the Olympians; The Descendants series; Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,...

'Do Your Job and No One Will Notice': Spy Kids Star Points Out Major Problem With Her Role 24 Years Later
Image
Spy Kids star Carla Gugino looks back on one major problem she had with her role in the film franchise. She played the kids' mother, Ingrid Cortez, alongside Antonio Banderas as their father.

Gugino told People that she felt too young to be the mother of two preteen children when filming Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids movie, which was released back in 2001. "I was 27 when I did that role, so I was way too young to play the part, because I was supposed to have been a spy for 10 years, and then I had two kids, who were like 9 and 11," she said.

She was given some wise advice by Antonio Banderas, with the seasoned action star telling her not to worry about her concerns too much. "Robert looked at me and was like, 'You do your job and no one will notice.'" Banderas' words of wisdom worked, and the...

Jon Favreau Is Making an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series for Disney+
Image
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the cartoon character Walt Disney created before Mickey Mouse, is finally getting the spotlight with his own Disney+ series. Moreover, a filmmaker with connections to brands like Star Wars and MCU is at the helm: Jon Favreau. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 and was featured in 27 animated shorts. However, Universal Pictures, who distributed the cartoons, took control of the character and forced Disney out. This resulted in Disney starting over from scratch, ultimately leading to the creation of Mickey Mouse. In 2006, Disney acquired the trademark of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit by trading the services of Al Michaels as play-by-play announcer on NBC Sunday Night Football to NBCUniversal.

Deadline reports that Favreau, the director of Iron Man and the creator of The Mandalorian, is set to write and produce a Disney+ series based on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The...

Mike Colter, Raúl Castillo, Matt Frewer & Thomas Lennon Round Out Cast Of QC Entertainment’s ‘The Casket Girls’
Image
Exclusive: QC Entertainment, the company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, has completed the Victoria, BC shoot on horror film The Casket Girls with four major additions to the cast: Mike Colter (Evil), Raúl Castillo (Smile 2), Matt Frewer (Perry Mason), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!).

As previously announced, Gabrielle Union leads the ensemble. Lennon also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Robert Ben Garant, his partner on Night at the Museum and numerous other projects, with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), who directed the film.

The Casket Girls is inspired by true events involving a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically,...

'There's Something About Mary' with Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller, is a Streaming Hit
Image
Raunchy rom-com There's Something About Mary is climbing the streaming chart, currently sitting at number six on Hulu. Starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, the comedy was directed by the Farrelly Brothers (Peter and Bobby), and became a massive smash hit when it premiered in July 1998. The film went on to earn nearly $370 million at the global box office against a $23 million production budget. It currently sits at a positive 84% critical and, surprisingly, only 61% audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following the success of Dumb and Dumber in 1994, and, to a lesser extent, Kingpin in 1996, the Farrelly Brothers went to work on There's Something About Mary, which starred Stiller as Ted, Diaz as Mary, and Matt Dillon as Healy. Years after a disastrous high school date with his crush Mary (you have to see it to believe it), Ted gets another chance years later when his best friend Dom (Chris Elliott) suggests he find her.

Box Office Vindication: ‘Mufasa’ Passes Up ‘Sonic 3’ in U.S., Heads for $700M Globally
John Kani, Seth Rogen, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Billy Eichner, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Blue Ivy Carter, and Aaron Pierre in Mufasa: O Rei Leão (2024)
Mufasa: The Lion King has been vindicated.

On Friday, Disney’s prequel and follow-up to 2019’s The Lion King narrowly passed up Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the domestic box office with $232.7 million in ticket sales, a feat no one thought possible after a muted opening at the Christmas box office. And by Sunday, its global total will be around $670 million as it prepares to jump to the $700 million mark against a $200 million-plus production budget before marketing.

Not that Sonic 3 isn’t its own huge success story. It’s earned a franchise-best $231.7 million domestically through Friday and $463.7 million globally against a production budget of $122 million. It’s very rare that a threequel earns 20 percent more than a previous title in the series, meaning it’s a growth property that would make any rival studio see green.

Rather, this is about Mufasa‘s impressive staying power thanks to strong word of mouth,...

Believe It or Not, This Monkey Has Grossed $2.5 Billion at the Box Office
Image
A true "chameleon" in the film industry is an actor that can disappear into their work. However, a true monkey in the film industry is an actor that can disappear into their work and is also a huge cash cow. Or maybe that is just the modern industry legend, Crystal the Capuchin.

There is a lot of animal imagery going on here, but what you need to know is that Crystal is a certified movie star, and a rather lucrative one at that. Ben Stiller Recalls Seeing Open Letter Urging Hollywood to “Stop Putting” Him in Comedies
Image
Ben Stiller still struggles to wrap his head around why he was such a beloved comedy movie star in the late 1990s and 2000s.

The actor-producer-director, who reached a new level of success thanks to his comedic roles in There’s Something About Mary, Meet the Parents, Tropic Thunder and Zoolander, among others, recently looked back on that time in his career during a recent conversation on The New York Times‘ podcast The Interview. However, he also recalled not everyone being his biggest fan.

“I remember opening up the L.A. Times, and there was this writer who wrote a letter: ‘Dear God, stop putting Ben Stiller in comedies,'” he recounted. “I was just like, I don’t know, I’m here, I love doing what I do.”

Overall, Stiller is thankful he was able to be a part of that chapter in movie history, adding, “It’s only in retrospect that I can go,...

Ben Stiller Once Saw an Article Urging Hollywood to ‘Stop Putting Ben Stiller in Comedies,’ Left ‘SNL’ After Four Episodes Because ‘I Got Too Nervous’
Image
Ben Stiller was the latest guest on The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast and admitted that he still doesn’t understand why he became such a popular comedy movie star in the late 1990s and 2000s. His self-directed work in 1996’s “The Cable Guy” was followed by the one-two punch of 1999’s “There’s Something About Mary” and 2000’s “Meet the Parents,” both of which grossed more than $330 million at the worldwide box office and turned Stiller into a blockbuster actor.

“I remember opening up the L.A. Times and there was this writer who wrote a letter: ‘Dear God, stop putting Ben Stiller in comedies,'” Stiller said about this period of his career. “I was just like, I don’t know, I’m here, I love doing what I do. The best Rami Malek movies and TV shows reveal how versatile the Mr. Robot star truly is, and demonstrate his unique ability to stand out in ensemble casts no matter how well-known those he’s sharing a screen with are. Whether it’s appearing alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Robbie Williams, or Denzel Washington, Malek has proved time and time again that he simply cannot fade into the background, and this has ensured his career has gone from strength to strength.

Born in 1981 in California, Rami Malek’s career began in 2004 when he appeared in an episode of Gilmore Girls. From there he had single-episode appearances in the likes of Over There and Medium, with his first prominent appearance being a recurring role in the sitcom The War At Home. What Happened to Zachary Levi?
Image
An insider at The Hollywood Reporter, who I am suuuuure can be trusted 100%, recently informed the world that actor Zachary Levi was disappointed and “bitter” that he didn’t rise to Chris Evans or The Rock level of stardom after Shazam. Nobody can be sure if these were his true feelings, but to many, the science has been settled, and this is how he feels. So the dude became a Robert F Kennedy Jr. fan, which resulted in a Trump endorsement and running away from… or rather, escaping, LA. He now spends his time on a ranch in Texas, where, apparently, he is going to focus on making faith-based films. So, did they cancel Zachary Levi, or did they set him free?

As an actor, his silliness is always believable, especially when he pretty much plays himself, a lovable man-child who can do action scenes, like in the hilarious show Chuck.

Ben Stiller Picks $56.7M Comedy Flop As His Most Misunderstood Movie By Critics
Image
Ben Stiller is one of the most notable comedic talents of his generation. He is known for his ability to shine in goofy films, such as The Night at the Museum, Dodgeball, or Meet the Parents. The comedian is also known for his work in front of and behind the camera. He made his directorial feature debut in 1994 with the romantic comedy Reality Bites, which was part of his claim to fame. After Reality Bites, Stiller directed other movies and TV episodes, including The Cable Guy and Tropic Thunder.

Stiller's comedies have also gotten sequels fairly often. Meet the Parents, for example, was followed up by Meet the Fockers, which then became a trilogy with the 2010 film Little Fockers. It's now expected to have a fourth installment, with Stiller expected to return. Night at the Museum is also a comedy trilogy, beginning with the 2006 film and ending with Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb...

Ben Stiller's $1 Billion Comedy Trilogy With A Sequel On The Way Finds New Streaming Home Next Month
Image
Ben Stiller has been a key comedic actor throughout the past several decades. His work in the industry has been prominent both on and off-screen, as he has been a director, writer, and producer in addition to his acting work. On the behind-the-scenes side, his current biggest project is as an executive producer on Severance, whose second season comes out on Friday, January 17. In addition to his producing role, Stiller also served as a director on seven episodes of Severance season 1.

While his TV shows are more overtly serialized, Stiller's career has also included several comedy film franchises. These have been met with varying levels of success. Zoolander was followed up by Zoolander 2 over a decade later, but the sequel film was met with a much more negative response than the original. In addition to the Zoolander movies, Stiller also plays the lead role in the family-friendly Night at the Museum movies.

“How Is This So Dang Good?”: Robin Williams’ Underrated Sci-Fi Drama Gets Rave Review From VFX Artists 25 Years After $87M Failure
Image
Robin Williams had a long-established Hollywood career, and became known for a variety of movies, including Dead Poets Society and Patch Adams. Some of his most celebrated roles are from comedies (The Birdcage and Mrs. Doubtfire), and his knack for humor, along with a charismatic personality, made him beloved by many. Other films, whether blockbusters and/or critical hits, have included The Fisher King, Jumanji, Night at the Museum, and Disney’s Aladdin, where Williams famously portrayed Genie, a character now immortalized in popular culture.

Williams starred in many more projects, some underperforming, including Father’s Day and Death to Smoochy, the latter only generating $8 million. Still, he is often considered among the best parts of any movie he was in, and Williams' film legacy remains strong as audiences continue to enjoy his work across all genres. When it comes to science fiction, for example, he appeared in Flubber, A.

'Hard to Think It Was That Bad': Ben Stiller Reflects on Zoolander 2's Rough Reviews
Image
Zoolander 2 seemed an easy lay-up after the first film's breakout success. The sequel flopped, however, inflamed by scathing reviews from critics and audiences.

Ben Stiller's career had a great run in the 2000s; he appeared in more than 34 films in ten years. He debuted his most iconic roles in that decade, in Starsky & Hutch, Madagascar, Night at the Museum, Tropic Thunder, and Meet the Parents. 2001's Zoolander is also a cult classic with its slapstick satire of the fashion industry. Praised by critics, that film was a modest box-office success; it seemed poised to launch a franchise or a sequel at least. Zoolander 2 was released 15 years later, but it failed to capture the original's magic. Stiller told Hot Ones he still can't figure out why Zoolander 2 was overwhelmingly panned by critics.

Ben Stiller's Movie Return After 3 Year Hiatus Gets Lukewarm Reviews On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Ben Stiller has returned to making movies, but the star's latest has earned him divisive results. The actor has been an active force in Hollywood for decades, making his movie debut in Hot Pursuit (1987). Stiller is best known for his performances in Madagascar (2005) as Alex, Night at the Museum (2006) as Larry, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) as the titular lead. Throughout his career, he has won a BAFTA Award, a Directors Guild of America award, and an Emmy.

Unfortunately, Stiller has not taken a major role since 2017, as he elected to focus on small projects. The smaller roles allowed him to increase his productivity as a director and producer. His last major casting was in 2021's Locked Down, but even that was a smaller part than he is typically known for. Stiller's focus on less prominent parts made his return a surprise. Unfortunately, his newest role in Hollywood...

Father Figures Cast & Character Guide
Image
The 2017 R-rated comedy movie Father Figures is a creative road movie that follows two adult brothers as they attempt to find their biological dad. After learning that their mother had lied to them their entire lives, Kyle and Peter are determined to figure out who their father is and set off across the country to find him. Along the way, they meet various men who could potentially be their father, and the brothers bond over their various adventures, creating a tale that is both funny and, at times, heartfelt.

Though the R-rated comedy received a lackluster response from critics and audiences and was not financially successful upon release, streaming audiences are now reassessing the movie and are realizing just how funny it actually is. Father Figures' quirky and underrated plot is supported by a cast of A-list stars that includes seasoned comedy veterans and expert dramatic actors.

Nutcrackers 2024 Cast & Character Guide
Image
While walking through the comical struggles of a caregiver, Nutcrackers features many memorable character beats captured by a talented roster of actors. Directed by David Gordon Green, Nutcrackers was the opening film at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. While it has received a mixed set of reviews from critics since its premiere and has an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score of 32%, many have appreciated it for delivering what it promises: some heart-warming holiday fun.

Nutcrackers does not attempt to set itself apart from other run-of-the-mill holiday movies, which makes it no more memorable than the regular fare of family films that come out at the end of every year. However, despite this, the film seems to have enough heart to keep viewers engaged throughout its runtime. Its ability to entertain can primarily be attributed to the memorable performances of its cast, which includes both new and familiar names.

‘Maria’ Star Pierfrancesco Favino on His Scene-Stealing Role as Angelina Jolie’s Butler and Defying Macho Stereotypes: ‘Not All Men Are Like That’
Image
Pierfrancesco Favino, who plays Maria Callas’ protective butler in Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” doesn’t back down from a fight, on-screen or in life.

At last year’s Venice Film Festival, the Rome native erupted with the kind of volcanic indignation that Callas was known for, furious that American actors like “House of Gucci” and “Ferrari” star Adam Driver kept getting cast as iconic Italians. Those parts should have gone to Italian actors, Favino argued at a press conference — though he was quick to add he had nothing against Driver.

With “Maria,” Favino gets the kind of quietly scene-stealing role that could show Hollywood what it’s been missing. In the meditative, slightly surreal drama, he plays Ferruccio, a loyal helpmate who caters to Callas by moving her grand piano around the apartment to whatever window she thinks has the best light that day, despite suffering from a bad back.

Ben Stiller admits Tropic Thunder couldn’t be made today as ‘edgier comedy is harder to do’
Ben Stiller doesn’t think ‘Tropic Thunder’ could be made today because “edgier comedy is harder to do”.The 58-year-old actor starred in and directed the 2009 satirical action comedy - which also starred Jack Black, Tom Cruise, Steve Coogan and Robert Downey Jr. - and has now admitted the film likely wouldn’t be greenlit today because of its controversial elements. When Collider asked if he could see ‘Tropic Thunder’ coming out now, he said: “I doubt it. Obviously, in this environment, edgier comedy is just harder to do. Definitely not at the scale we made it at, too, in terms of the economics of the business.“I think even at the time we were fortunate to get it made, and I credit that, actually, to Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks. He read it and was like, ‘Alright, let's make this thing.’ It's a very inside movie when you think about it.
