I can't understand the other comment here. Clearly didn't get it. I went to see it in Balbriggan. I didn't like the poster at all but read so many good reviews online that we thought we'd give it a go. I'm glad we did.
It was fantastic. Really like all four girls and their performances, the story is so true to life, it really brings you back. The music, the photography, the whole look was wonderful. I particularly appreciated all the small nuances in the family life of the girls.
This is a simple story, not a huge story but one where the little details tell it really, it captures growing up in an intelligent way. One of the best Irish films I've seen.

This film brings back memories of Dublin in the late 70's. The actors clothing, the vehicles on the roads and everything else about the film really hit the spot with me. Remember when most of Dublin's cinemas where in town and that's where we all met up? The actors play their parts very well. Maeve gives the right mix of innocence, curiosity and wonder. Her experiences will register with both male and female viewers who can remember that "sweet sixteen" time of their lives. The other actors fill their roles well and without competing for the number one spot. The nosy shopkeeper telling tales to Maeve's Dad is a reminder that in Ireland, someone always knows what you have been up to. Overall, this is a lovely film. It's a charming and realistically brief portrayal of teenage life at the time, and makes a welcome change from action and special effects.
I really liked this film. It brought back a lot of memories, especially going out with some eejit who you thought was cool and then to have your illusions sorely shattered.
My family thought it was boring when screened on TV but I loved the little observational gems like the posh drunk in the chip shop and the two little punks trying to score acid in the park.
I recognised a lot of the locations as places I used to hang out in my teens. All of the four girls were brilliant especially as the film progressed, they really grew into their roles, particularly the girl whose father is the taxi driver.
It is a slow moving film and nothing much really happens but the beauty of the film is in the development of the characters, their relationships and emotions and of course the detail in the costumes, hair, houses etc. Was disappointed when it finished, would have gladly spent more time in the four girls company.
