As we learned from the original Spinal Tap, all things must pass — or choke on someone else’s vomit, or die in a bizarre gardening accident, or explode onstage. So it’s appropriate that the film’s long-delayed sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (in theaters Sept. 12), functions as a very funny elegy for the entire rock & roll era, with returning original cast members Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer leaning hard into their fictional band’s creakiness as they prepare for the Tap’s final concert.

From the South to Hollywood to Thailand, Parker Posey’s road to an Emmy nomination has been anything but predictable. The actress stars in Season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus as Victoria Ratliff, a North Carolina matriarch navigating the chaos of a family vacation in Thailand.
Soon after the show aired, Posey made an appearance on the Today Show, where she delighted viewers with her now-iconic Southern accent channeling Victoria’s dramatic flair and lingering drawl on words like “tsunami” and “Buddhism.” The moment unexpectedly took on a life of its own.
“People were like, ‘Oh my God, you're going viral.’” she recalled. But the Internet craze came with a twist.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in “The Price,” Season 2, Episode 6 of “The Last of Us,” streaming on the service currently known as Max.
When “The Last of Us” co-creator Craig Mazin called Catherine O’Hara to offer her a role in the second season of the HBO series, she was tickled by the idea that she’d be playing a therapist in a post-apocalyptic society. “In this world, that somebody’s responsible for anybody’s mental well being — what a ridiculous pressure job!” she says over Zoom. “That makes me laugh.”
O’Hara has been making audiences laugh since her days on the Canadian sketch comedy series Sctv in the late 1970s through her standout performances in films like “Beetlejuice” and “Home Alone,” the Christopher Guest comedies “Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind” and “For Your Consideration” and her Emmy-winning role on “Schitt’s Creek.” But...

Sawadee Kha from The White Lotus, Thailand! One of the most popular satire drama shows of our time returns with a third season, and after Maui and Sicily, director Mike White turns his attention to the mesmerizing Ko Samui, an island in Thailand. After delivering a fun and intense second season, a lot was at stake, especially with Jennifer Coolidge not returning to the show this time. One can’t help but wonder if a third season was necessary. And will it be as entertaining as its predecessors, considering it’ll thematically be the same? The one-word answer to both questions is Yes! Mike White knows what he is doing, and he has proved that there is no point in second-guessing his creative genius.
One of the most glaring changes this season is the theme music. In 2022, when the second season was released, the internet went gaga over the high-tempo rendition of the original score,...

Here’s a fun fact: Thanks to his lineage, writer/director/actor Christopher Guest has an inherited royal title — the 5th Baron Haden-Guest — and for three years was an active member of the British House of Lords. In his spare time, however, Baron Haden-Guest makes delightfully silly movies that make audiences around the globe very happy.
Guest largely worked as an actor in the 1970s, with stage and TV appearances mixed with occasional side gigs with the satirists The National Lampoon. His breakthrough role came in 1984 as lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel in Rob Reiner‘s classic comedy “This Is Spinal Tap,” whose improvisational style proved to be an enormous influence when Guest began directing films five years later. That technique came to full fruition in his second directorial effort, 1996’s “Waiting For Guffman,” where he gathered together a group of great comic actors who formed a loose repertory company that...

This year’s Academy Award nominations were just announced, shining a spotlight on some of the best movies of the year, plus some pretty bad movies, and also a bunch of stuff that nobody has ever heard of and may or may not actually be real for all we know.
One snub that some fans are clearly disappointed about is the lack of a nomination for Will & Harper in the Best Documentary category. The acclaimed doc followed Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele on a cross-country road trip, shortly after her decision to transition in 2021.
Will & Harper also, arguably, deserved a nomination for Best Original Song. In the movie, Ferrell and Steele task Kristen Wiig with penning an anthem for their road trip. The resulting “Harper and Will Go West” is surprisingly good; it’s catchy, and has clever lyrics, such as how it compares the duo to “Thelma and Louise,...

Se7en, the deeply disturbing serial killer film from director David Fincher, is turning 30 this year. While you silently cry over how many years have passed, here's an awesome detail that Fincher has just confirmed: Kevin Spacey wasn't his first choice to play the cold-blooded killer, John Doe. As it turns out, another, much different Hollywood legend was his first pick.
Fincher spoke to Variety about the film's upcoming 4K restoration, and he used the opportunity to reminisce about making such an important film in his career. Alien 3 had opened to terrible reviews, and three years later, Fincher was still feeling the effects of an industry that had turned its back on him. Fortunately, it all worked out for the best, as Se7en shot him into stardom as one of modern cinema's most interesting auteurs.

Director Rob Reiner spoke about the highly-anticipated sequel to his legendary "rockumentary" This Is Spinal Tap in a new interview with Empire. Among the topics discussed was how Spinal Tap II was "unlocked" 40 years after the original.
Along with being one of the most quoted films of all time, This Is Spinal Tap was at the vanguard of the mockumentary genre in its portrayal of washed-up, over the top rock stars. The movie’s stars — Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel), Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins), and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls) — would go on to make other such films as Best in Show and A Mighty Wind.
But it’s been four decades since Guest, McKean, Shearer, and Reiner revisited the "topsy-turvy world of heavy rock," as Spinal Tap’s manger Ian Faith, played by the late Tony Hendra, says in the 1984 film. So what changed?

Ben Stiller, executive producer and frequent director of the series, has revealed some tantalizing details about the second season, which is slated to premiere on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025. In an interview with Collider, when asked with what details he'd like to tease viewers, Stiller had this to say:
Knowing how Season 1 ended, there were so many obviously big questions. The classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap is finally getting a sequel after 40 years, and here is everything we know about This Is Spinal Tap 2. This is Spinal Tap is one of the finest examples of the mockumentary subgenre, with its endlessly quotable dialogue embedded into pop culture. The movie was the directorial debut of Rob Reiner, who would go on to make other classic movies such as the drama Stand by Me, the fantasy film The Princess Bride, and the rom-com When Harry Met Sally. Reiner is back in the director's chair for This Is Spinal Tap 2.
The original follows the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap as they embark on an ill-fated American tour to promote their latest album. The key band members are lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Decades before shows like "Search Party" took an ever-shifting approach to the comedic TV format, "Laverne & Shirley" was switching things up season after season. The "Happy Days" spinoff started with a pretty consistent premise in its early seasons, focusing on two zany roommates working at a Milwaukee bottling company. By season 5, though, tomboy Laverne (Penny Marshall) and optimist Shirley (Cindy Williams) ended up in the Army Reserves, and season 6 saw them move to Burbank and work as department store gift wrappers. By the final season, Shirley was gone, and Laverne was working in the aerospace industry.
As wild as the twists and turns of "Laverne & Shirley" were, the show had some constants across its eight seasons, including the presence of neighbors Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David Lander), Laverne's dad Frank (Phil Foster), and Shirley's fame-hungry ex, Carmine (Eddie Mekka). Most of the actors who made "Laverne & Shirley...

Today sees the release of Strange Darling in theaters and if you’re a fan of cinema then you need to get your ass to a theater as soon as possible. Because there’s an element of the film that must be seen to be believed. And that’s not even getting into the wonderful performances from stars Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald. To give yourself the best chance, you absolutely need to see this opening weekend before someone on TikTok thinks they’re funny by spoiling it. There are few experiences so pure and so unique, that I have been practically shouting from the rooftops both: to never watch any promotion for the film, and to see it immediately. You can check out my absolutely glowing review Here.

It’s a family reunion at the Emmys, as Eugene and Dan Levy are in talks to host the 76th kudocast on ABC, taking place Sept. 15 at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
The father-son duo, who co-created “Schitt’s Creek” and each won Emmys for it, are currently in negotiations with the Television Academy, and a deal has not yet been struck, sources tell Variety. Neither the Television Academy, nor representatives for the Levys, returned Variety‘s request for comment.
Eugene and Dan Levy have presented together at awards ceremonies, including the 2020 SAG Awards, and once guest-hosted “Ellen” as a duo.
In their six-season CBC comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” they played father and son Johnny and David Rose, whose family, after an embezzlement scheme, is forced to move out of their mansion and into a motel in Schitt’s Creek, a town they once bought as a joke.

Hallowed: Chapter 1 — A Fantasy Horror Comic: "Civil war has ravaged the country of Metazoa as two opposing faiths crusade for the holy city of Bilateria. Broken, beaten, and starving, a band of deserters make a desperate trek across their war-torn homeland in an attempt to escape their sins and the religious zealots pursuing them. Leading them is "Knight Tearer" Flagg, a killing machine as disillusioned as he is deadly. His goal? A ship—then Terroir, a land across the sea supposedly free of war and prejudice. He just needs to get his men there, no easy task considering the miles of frozen wasteland ahead of him and the Apostles behind, a ruthless group of soldiers tasked with snuffing out heresy and executing deserters. The situation is grim, almost hopeless, when out of nowhere...a forest appears. And in the center? A curious and ancient tower. Regardless of "how" or "why,...

Weakest Link –Pictured: Jane Lynch — (Photo by: Chris Haston/NBC) Before conquering Hollywood, Jane Lynch spent her early career in Chicago, where she spent time at The Second City and Annoyance Theater, two institutions well known for their emphasis on improvisation. Lynch’s improv abilities have served her well, especially when she was cast in several of Christopher Guest’s largely improvised mockumentaries, and they continue to help her in her latest endeavor: hosting NBC’s new version of Weakest Link. Game show hosts thrive on being able to react to things on the fly, and Lynch, who previously hosted Hollywood Game Night, says that running a game show is a skill that seems to come naturally to her. This Is Spinal Tap is one of the most quotable films in cinema history and defined the genre of film known today as the mockumentary.
Rob Reiner’s 1984 directorial debut about an aging English metal band chronicled fame, groupies and their fateful tour and would set the bar for the style of film to satirize a subject depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. They often use the conventions of traditional documentaries, such as interviews and narration, to tell a fictional or exaggerated story.
Christopher Guest, who portrayed Nigel Tufnel in This Is Spinal Tap, would go on to direct and star with an incredible ensemble cast in many of his productions that included Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge in the classic mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration and Mascots.

Jeff Daniels contemplates life and death in a teaser trailer and first-look images for A Man in Full
“When you die, will people notice,” Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels) asks in Netflix‘s teaser trailer for the upcoming limited series A Man in Full. The question is as old as time and something people often ask themselves when contemplating a swift exit from this mortal coil. What would prompt a real estate mogul to have such macabre thoughts? His bankruptcy and inevitable downfall, of course.
Here’s the official synopsis for A Man in Full courtesy of Netflix:
When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.
A Man in Full is based on the New York Times best-selling novel by the late Tom Wolfe, who died of an infection in Manhattan in 2018. The six-episode limited series hails from David E. Kelley Productions and Royal Ties Productions Inc.

Music industry parodies are a tricky comedy subgenre to get right but can become cult classics with enduring support. The best music parody movies blend absurd comedy, genuine characters, catchy songs, and particular aim at artists/genres. This Is Spinal Tap!, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and Popstar: Never Stop never Stopping are among the top music parody movies that offer good music and solid laughs.
One of the most deceptively tricky subgenres of comedy movies is the music industry parody. The best versions of these films are ones that can juggle a lot of different elements, finding a way to fuse absurd comedy, genuine characters, and catchy songs into a single unified project. It’s time to crank the amps up to 11. Or, is it 12?
“This is Spın̈al Tap” (with a dotless i and umlauts on the n), Rob Reiner’s legendary spoof film starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and a slew of guests like Paul Shaffer (“kick my ass!”), Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby (“if Frank Sinatra says it’s okay!”), and Billy Crystal (“mime is money!”) was way ahead of its time as both a mockumentary and in satirizing the rock lifestyle. The film is beloved by fans, and especially musicians, and it certainly seems like there’s been a sequel already. The gang has reunited for television specials, album releases (“Break Like the Wind”), made an appearance on “The Simpsons,” and, of course, the three actors have done several similar improv-style satires, including “A Mighty Wind,” which skewers folk musicians. But there actually hasn’t been a sequel...

There is no name more synonymous with the mockumentary style than Christopher Guest. He was the director who shot the genre into the public eye.
His first film, Waiting for Guffman, was groundbreaking in its intention and a light-hearted look at small-town life and the strange world of local theater. It remains his best.
Who Is Christopher Guest?
Christopher Guest is the leader of an informal troupe of actors whose focus is long-form, character-based improvisation. Guest himself has been involved in this type of acting since starring in director Rob Reiner’s 1984 opus This Is Spinal Tap. Guest played Nigel Tufnel opposite soon-to-be long-time collaborators Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. The three portrayed 1980s British rock stars whose careers have not been going according to plan.
