Since leaning toward 3D animation, DreamWorks has built a reputation for being anti-Disney when it comes to its most recognisable IPs, whether it’s the beloved Shrek or the Martin Scorsese-starrer Shark Tale. While the studio doesn’t compare to something like Pixar when it comes to delivering emotionally resonant stories consistently, when it does, we get gems like How to Train Your Dragon and The Wild Robots.

Unfortunately, one such poignant story that deserved its own franchise was brushed under the rug, even though it had a lot more to offer than its competitors during the same timeframe.

For a studio that is notable for integrating pop-culture into its stories, in the early 2000s, DreamWorks branched out its slate with How to Train Your Dragon, arguably the best non-Disney Disney animated releases of that era.

Few horror franchises are quite as complicated as The Amityville Horror franchise, though there’s a pretty clear reason as to why. Since Amityville is a real place, and the stories of both the DeFeo and Lutz families are historical, no single filmmaking entity can stake a claim. Want to make a movie titled Halloween? Go for it, but you’d better make sure there’s no Michael Myers. Want to make a movie about the haunted abode at 112 Ocean Avenue? Carte blanche freedom. Do whatever you want—not even the devil himself can stop you.

While there is a canonical series, the most recent entry of which is the Bella Thorne vehicle Amityville: The Awakening, there are considerably more unrelated horror movies endeavoring to capitalize on the famous property’s name. It reminds me a lot of when an old coworker thought they bought a new Shark Tale movie for their kid.

This is, in fact, the second film from Skydance Animation, the new animation outfit headed by former Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter, who left his previous company after allegations of sexual misconduct. Filmmaker Vicky Jenson is part of the two powerhouse teams that brought us the off-beat animated classics of a generation: Shrek and Shark Tale. On both projects, she served as a co-director, and 20 years later, her next animated feature — under her solo direction — is streaming on Netflix. As with the previous two, Spellbound boasts a star-studded vocal cast and plenty of musical numbers to keep the whole family singing through the holidays.

Warning: Spoilers for Spellbound.Spellbound is a traditional-feeling animated film with a message that is anything but. The second release from Skydance Animation follows Ellian, a young princess who sets off to reverse a mysterious curse that has transformed her parents into monsters. Ellians journey with her monster parents across a whimsical landscape turns into something more serious as new reVellations threaten to alter her family dynamic forever. The movies star cast includes Rachel Zegler, Javier Bardem, Nicole Kidman, Nathan Lane, Jenifer Lewis, and John Lithgow.

Spellbound was brought to the screen by veteran animation director Vicky Jenson, who also co-wrote the script. Jenson is well-known as the finishing director of the 2001 mega-hit Shrek, and also directed 2004s Shark Tale. On Spellbound, Jenson helmed her first movie musical, working with legendary songwriters Alan Menken and Glenn Slater on the soundtrack.

Acclaimed animation director Vicky Jenson tackles tough themes of divorce and broken homes in Spellbound, a CGI adventure about a teenage princess, Ellian (Rachel Zegler), whose bickering royal parents have been transformed into unruly monsters. The new Netflix film cleverly uses fairy tale elements to address how children's feelings are often ignored when adult relationships are irrevocably broken. Despite backlash from more conservative audiences, the movie was a global chart-topper and its themes (and music) are unique.

Jenson graciously spoke with MovieWeb about the new film and opened up to us about its Golden Globe-winning star, Rachel Zegler, who is proudly and boldly outspoken regarding the outcome of the US presidential election, regardless of the publicity consequences. She had to publicly apologize after saying on social media, "There is a deep, deep sickness in this country that is shown in the sheer amount of people who showed up for this man who threatens our democracy.

With all the behind-the-scenes makings of an animated classic, Spellbound features a talented voice cast and a can’t-miss creative team for a family movie with a whole lot of heart.

2024 has been a particularly good year for animated films. From Inside Out 2 becoming a box office giant in the summer to The Wild Robot enchanting us with the DreamWorks magic, the pressure was on for Spellbound, Netflix's latest collaboration with Skydance Animation. Thankfully, the streaming service's efforts paid off, as the film delivers a charming spin on fairytales and happy-ever-afters that sets itself a part from other animations we've seen before. The latest directorial effort from Vicky Jenson follows Princess Ellian (voiced by Rachel Zegler), a teenage monarch who has quite literally felt the weight of her crown ever since her parents were transformed into monsters.

There’s a scene midway through “Spellbound,” the new Netflix animated movie musical starring Rachel Zegler, where we briefly wander through an expansive forest captured in an oddly throwaway montage. Looking down at a group of characters venturing into the vast unknown, we glimpse a shot of butterflies all taking off into the sky.

At this moment, my mind immediately flew to this year’s beautiful “The Wild Robot,” where a similar scene plays out. However, though alike in the broad strokes, the execution of each could not be more different. Where the wondrous “The Wild Robot” patiently permits us to sit with its stunning and vibrant visuals, allowing us to fully take in the awe of the moment, “Spellbound” just lets this slip away. It is without any wonder or whimsy, the animation all looking rather flat to the eye rather than bursting with depth that takes the breath away.

Spellbound is a bold fairytale that reaches for a different vision of a happy ending. The movie stars Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) as the young Princess Ellian, who sets off in search of a solution to a curse that has turned her parents into literal monsters. It was directed and co-written by Vicky Jenson, whose past directorial credits include Shark Tale and the pop culture phenomenon Shrek.

Spellbound also marks the reunion of Jenson and Shrek star John Lithgow, who plays the Bolinar, the royal advisor to Ellian. While Spellbound is a rare appearance for Lithgow in a movie musical, the actor has a long history with music and musical theater including a leading role in the original Broadway production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Lithgow is also known for his work in films and TV series like 3rd Rock From the Sun, The Old Man, and The World According to Garp.

October has been a good month for Will Smith fans as the Oscar winner's latest film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die not only landed on Netflix but went on to dominate the charts. His animated film, Shark Tale also recently found success on the streamer, and now the party is continuing to next month as one of Smith's most rewatchable titles is on its way to a free streaming service. The Pursuit of Happyness, considered by many to be Smith's best performance, will arrive on Tubi next month. The 2006 film based on the inspirational true story of stockbroker Chris Gardner earned Smith both a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Actor.

Netflix & Skydance Animation have debuted the main official trailer for an animated adventure called Spellbound, made by filmmaker Vicky Jenson (who also co-directed Shrek and Shark Tale years ago). This big family movie musical featuring original songs will be streaming on Netflix in in November before Thanksgiving. Every kid has trouble getting along with their parents sometimes, but this is just ridiculous. Ha ha. In Spellbound, Ellian (voiced by Rachel Zegler) squares off with her mother and father, the king and queen of Lumbria. But this isn't any typical family drama — a mysterious spell has transformed her parents into massive, rampaging monsters. She goes on a quest to find out how to save her parents and maybe the entire kingdom. The main voice cast also includes John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, Tituss Burgess, with Javier Bardem & Nicole Kidman. With songs written by musical legend Alan Menken & Glenn Slater.

Skydance Animation is coming out swinging with their second feature film, Spellbound, which boasts an astonishing cast & crew of animation veterans from Disney, Dreamworks, and beyond. Bad Boys: Ride or Die shoots its way to a major streaming service debut following its successful box-office run. The Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led action comedy is set to premiere on Netflix soon.

Per What's on Netflix, Ride or Die will be available for American viewers to stream via Netflix on Oct. 8. Due to Sony Pictures' deal with the streamer, it will be available via Netflix for 18 months before heading to Hulu. The film will also reportedly become available for international audiences via Netflix in late 2024.

Shark Tale was a classic for any household in the early 2000s. It had everything; talking fish, a great cast of voice actors, and, of course, its brilliant soundtrack. The one thing it doesn't have, however, is an accurate reflection of how the ocean works. In all fairness, no one realistically watched this animated family comedy about talking fish and thought angrily to themselves about the lack of oceanography representation. Nevertheless, it is fun to explore some of the areas in which the film completely overlooks logic in the name of storytelling.

Maybe there’s hope for quality Netflix originals apart from its awards contenders. “Rebel Ridge,” a topical thriller about an ex-Marine confronting a corrupt small-town sheriff, is #1 at Netflix. A respected actor and ascendant star, Pierre is not a household name like Mark Wahlberg or Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy, all of whom recently took Netflix originals to #1.

The acclaimed music drama, Empire, continues to enjoy its increased status as a cult classic thanks, in part, to co-creator Lee Daniels. However, while Daniels built Empire into a beloved show, he was crumbling behind the scenes, recalling his "horrible" experience working on the Fox series.

Speaking with The Film Stage, Daniels revealed why he decided to join the TV industry following a successful film career and whether he enjoyed working on Empire. Following success in the film business, including as a producer on Monster's Ball and the director of fellow Academy Award-winning film, Precious, Daniels did Empire because he wanted to see what it was like to "answer to suits" from a TV network. I dont like staying in the same lane just as a creative. When I got into television, I really just wanted to be able to answer to suits, Daniels said I wanted to know what that experience was like.

As Will Smith enjoys his Hollywood mini-Renaissance thanks to the success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, one of his most critically panned films lands some streaming success 20 years after its release. Smith's animated film, Shark Tale, sinks its teeth into Netflix's movie chart.

Per Collider, Shark Tale is now in the Netflix Top 10 movies, hanging on to the number 10 slot on the list. The DreamWorks Animation film enters the chart as the animation powerhouse celebrates its 30th anniversary in October. Shark Tale debuted via Netflix in April of last year.

On the same year that one DreamWorks animated film celebrates its 20th anniversary, it's now making waves on the most popular streaming service. Shark Tale, the 2004 animated film starring Will Smith, Rene Zellweger, and Jack Black, has narrowly entered the top 10 on Netflix, currently sitting as the tenth most popular movie. Shark Tale tells the story of the son of a young gangster shark who is killed, and the target of the attack and his vegetarian brother decide to use the accident to their own advantage. Exclusive: Sk Global Entertainment, the independent entertainment studio behind hits like Anyone But You and Crazy Rich Asians, has appointed Jeannine Tang to serve as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel.

Tang joins after more than six years at the recently shuttered Participant, where most recently served as General Counsel, overseeing and advising on all aspects of the company’s business and legal affairs, including the content business, strategic investments and partnerships, social impact collaborations and general corporate matters. In her new role, she’ll be responsible for the integration and operationalization of Sk Global Entertainment and its subsidiary Critical Content, overseeing oversee company-wide strategy, business operations and dealmaking, as well as legal affairs and human resources.

Netflix has high hopes for its lavish new animated feature “Spellbound,” releasing the film’s rousing first trailer and assembling a powerhouse voice cast including Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem. Directed by veteran animator Vicky Jenson and featuring original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, “Spellbound” aims to mesmerize viewers with its blend of fantasy tropes, family drama, and showstopping musical numbers.

The film follows Princess Ellian (Zegler), a headstrong teenager who embarks on an epic quest to save her kingdom of Lumbria after a mysterious spell transforms her parents into monsters. Audiences are given a glimpse of Lumbria’s stunning animated world, vibrant with magic and adventure. Jenson makes her triumphant return to features with “Spellbound” almost 20 years after her work on 2004’s “Shark Tale.”

She goes on a quest to find out how to save her parents and maybe the entire kingdom. “He sent me the song with him on it already and basically asked me to do a verse, and I went in. I usually don’t do badman lyrics, I’m more for the ladies, but the movie is called Bad Boys,” the Grammy-winning reggae-dancehall artist tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The track was dope and it’s definitely reflective of Run Dmc, [LL Cool J’s] ‘Rock the Bells,’ old-school hip-hop with that energy.”
