Waheeda and Shashi meet when she is on a trip to Nainital with her friends .
Some teasings , bantering and a couple of duets later they fall in love . Waheeda comes from humble background when Shashi is from a rich family .
His parents are searching for a good bride for him from among their own status .Their manager wants his foreign returned niece Libi Rana to marry in this big house hold . He also trains and sends her to be with Shashi at every small opportunity to impress him and his parents .
When Shashi's parents realize that their son is in love with Waheeda , they do not hesitate to contact her mother . Despite their difference in status , they agree to marry her into their family . Sadly in the final moment they realize that she is having a problem with her horoscope which cannot be solved easily .
Shocked , his mother Achla backs off . Sad but practical , even Waheeda refuses this alliance saying this might bring bad luck . When they see that Shashi is very disturbed and is not interested in marrying any one else , they cave in . Shashi and Waheeda get married in a grand manner . She comes to live with them expecting domestic bliss. Nazir Hussain dies in a day after the marriage due to argument with Achla . From here starts Achla's suspicion and ill treatment of her new DIL Waheeda.
She tries her best to win over the family including Shashi's younger sister and brother . She is blamed for everything going wrong . She bears everything silently thanx to her husband's support .
The sly manager keeps butting in as he still wants Libi to marry Shashi . She also sings a doleful song and suggests that Shashi divorces his wife .
Slowly things tide against Waheeda .Due to business problems , his interfering manager , Libi and his mother instigating , he too turns against his wife and starts abusing her . She is sent away to her mother's house .
Matters come to a head when Shashi is hospitalized and bedridden. Waheeda comes with her jewels to pawn her family out . Another round of abuse takes place from mother and son .
This is witnessed by the family priest . He finally confesses that he has been forced to give false information . There is nothing wrong with Waheeda's horoscope . All this was the manager's doing . A shocked Achla realises her folly in believing such blind superstition and the family unites again .
Waheeda is perfect as the young chirpy girl in love initially then trying to adjust in her in laws house and then as a victim of misunderstandings . Shashi looks beefy . His emotions are fine .
Achla and Nasir Hussan are the usual affectionate parents of Shashi .
Libi Rana looks like Katrina Kaif but only prettier and more original.
Everything form her dress to accent is in sync as a foreign returned girl.
Over all a fine family movie talking about blind believes and superstitions .
