Originally, WWF owner Vince McMahon wanted the main event to be Hulk Hogan vs. Zeus for the WWF Championship. According to Tom Lister Jr., these plans were nixed when Hogan refused to drop the title to Zeus, thus causing The Ultimate Warrior to be placed into the main event slot with Hogan instead.

Roddy Piper painted half of his body black, as an insult to his opponent, Bad News Brown. After the match, Piper was unable to remove the black makeup, due to the bottle for the removal solution being swapped with regular water by someone backstage. According to Piper, it took three weeks of scrubbing to remove the makeup. He also said it got him some interesting looks from people at the airport when he flew out of Toronto as it is racist.
