I have watched many Hollywood movies over the years with big stars, expensive productions and special effects, dealing with the same theme as 100 Kilos, but none were as effective. The main difference to me was character likability. In 100 Kilos, I really liked and sympathized with the main characters, Ricky, played by Glenn Plummer, and Big Loc, played by Dwayne Adway. They were honest and wanted to do the right thing, but simply couldn't withstand the temptation of quick money.
The grittiness of the 100 Kilos, and its low budget production added to the strength of the film. The acting was top notch so was the direction.
I recommend 100 Kilos to anyone, even to the ones who only watch Hollywood movies.
I'll just say it straight up! This film gets a thumbs up from me!! I loved the way this film was shot along with the characters. All the actors did such a good job. Great job in casting! Bravo to writer/director Rod Scott. I thoroughly enjoyed his story. It held my interest throughout. He did a terrific job in keeping the film moving along at a solid pace. Again, this one gets a "thumbs up" from me!
I enjoyed this film. The acting was very good, and the main characters were compelling. I look forward to seeing more from this filmmaker.
First, I have to mention how underrated Glenn Plummer is as an actor. I've seen even more recent films of his (this film was released in 2001) and he's always captivating. This role as drug dealer Rick Ross (not the hip hop artist) should have won him more recognition than it did. He truly brought some magic to the screen and to this story based on an infamous criminal. Ross was an OG, and so is Plummer.
This wretchedly edited narrative is salvaged from being utter dreck because it does not kowtow to corporate principles of glamour presentation. The acting is amateurish to a fault but genuine in portraying the character of East L.A. as it was and largely still is, less the ready availability of automatic weapons. My greatest regret was that it fails to show Freeway Rick's actual modus operandi. For those seeking the facts underpinning this recount, cf. Gary Webb's reportage instigated by Freeway Rick's testimony from San Diego MCC. Further substantiation is available from both volumes of Maxine Waters' federal congressional hearings which ultimately compelled admission that intelligence agencies did indeed know this perverse corruption of minority mores was the result of surreptitiously underwritten proxy warfare.
