If you know your animation history pretty well, you know that even the biggest studios can have false starts. A major studio can announce the development of a new animated film, only for that movie to never see the light of day, for one reason or another. Pixar, for example, has axed its own titles for being too similar to those of competing studios, like the time it removed "Newt," a film about procreating newts, from its schedule over concerns it was too similar to Blue Sky Studios' "Rio," as one example. Sometimes, though, it's as simple as a studio's executive team shifting, like when Netflix's planned adaptation of the "Redwall" fantasy-adventure book series was sent into development hell because of the studio's changing priorities.
Finally, in select cases, there's an even simpler excuse: If one movie doesn't do well at the box office, any potential sequel goes the way of the dodo.

To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.

The box set includes classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, as well as newer films like Encanto and Turning Red. Disney has released the first trailer for Christopher Robin, the upcoming live-action take on Winnie the Pooh. The honey-loving bear and his friends have been a beloved fixture of the Disney brand for a very long time, but this is truly going to be a different take on the world that Pooh and his pals inhabit. Not only are we going to see Pooh and his adult friend all grown up, but this is a live-action take on the material, which will be a new thing for moviegoers. Now, we have our first taste of what this is going to look like.
Disney's Christopher Robin, which is described as a heartwarming live-action adventure, centers on the man that the movie is named after. That man, however, was once the young boy who loved embarking on adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with a band of spirited and lovable animals. Unfortunately,...

No doubt picked up for UK release following the hype surrounding actor Milo Cawthorne’s other horror flick, Deathgasm, Blood Punch is a Groundhog Day style horror that tells the story of Milton (Cawthorne), a brilliant chemistry student who breaks out of court-mandated drug rehab with a mysterious bad girl, Skyler (Tennet). Looking to recruit a cook for a one-day drug score, she lures him to an isolated cabin with her psychotic and trigger-happy boyfriend Russell (Boyland). Russell reveals that he plans to murder Milton as soon as he is finished cooking the drugs, and their simple love triangle quickly descends into a mind-blowing supernatural cycle of carnage and mayhem with no end… and no escape.

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to clean up Netflix once again. Don’t fear too much though, as much as we hate to see some of our favorites leave Netflix, they do a pretty good job at adding some great new content. We lose Almost Famous, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, The Graduate, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and all the Rocky movies – and we get Intolerable Cruelty, Training Day, The Rundown and a new Netflix Original for Degrassi: The Next Class.

Your holidays are probably already packed, but if you want to rewatch "Gladiator," the original "Conan the Barbarian," "Mission: Impossible," or any "Bourne," "Rocky," or "Rambo" films, get that action fix before New Year's Eve: These favorites are leaving Netflix streaming in January.

Blood of Your Blood: Paxson’s Comedy Horror Debut Lacks Bite
Unspooling with all the finesse of a drunken yet trenchant teenager’s expletive laden ranting at an underwhelmingly attended frat party, Madellaine Paxson’s directorial debut, the indie horror comedy Blood Punch, fails to satisfy even as it casts a wide net of genre blending.
Paxson, previously a writer of children’s television fare, directs from Eddie Guzelian’s (The Tigger Movie, 2000) screenplay, but everyone seems oblivious to how adults act and sound, whether or not in the confines of a sometimes ludicrous scenario. Since premiering in 2013 at the Austin Film Festival, the title has picked up its fair share of champions, with several sources praising the film’s wit and originality. Unfortunately, despite its ambitious twists and turns, these inklings of authenticity can be traced to notable elements from a slew of previous titles, and there’s little...

What happens when two children’s entertainment scribes (boasting credits such as The Tigger Movie, The Penguins Of Madagascar, Peter Rabbit, and Kim Possible) collaborate on their first feature film? Obviously you get a kid friendly movie titled Blood Punch, filled with death, guts, murder, betrayal – wait, what? You heard right. Director Madellaine Paxson and writer Eddie Guzelian are ditching all that warm and fuzzy bullshit to bring you their own twisted fairy tale about three rowdy criminals forced to repeat the same deadly day over and over again. It’s like kind of like Groundhog Day – a vile, wicked, royally f#cked up Groundhog Day your mum certainly wouldn’t approve of.
It all starts when Milton (Milo Cawthorne), a shy chemistry wiz, meets Skyler (Olivia Tennet), a criminal looking for the best meth cook she can find. After meeting in Milton’s rehab clinic (where else would you find the best junkies?...

Update: The two Jungle Book movies in the works are shaping up to be quite different. Jon Favreau, the director behind movies like Iron Man, Elf and Zathura, is directing the Disney live-action version. Now, Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu is in talks to direct the other one from Warner Brothers - he's the guy behind really heavy, artsy movies like Babel. His next movie is called Birdman starring Emma Stone and Michael Keaton. It looks like these dueling live-action Jungle Books will be as similar as 2012's Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman.
June 20, 2012 - A second remake of The Jungle Book is now in the works, this one will be in 3D animation. Madagascar screenwriter Billy Frolick will adapt Rudyard Kipling's classic book about a boy adopted by jungle animals. Jun Falkenstein, director of The Tigger Movie, will co-direct with Kevin Johnson, whose credits include Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked...

Growing up with classic Winnie the Pooh cartoons, 2011’s return to that classic take on Pooh Bear was a nostalgic whirlwind I didn’t think Disney was capable of when it came to cartoons of the classic A.A. Milne character. I’d come to accept The Tigger Movie as the new unfortunate standard for Winnie the Pooh movies, and when you compare it to a classic like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, you can truly understand just how low the bar had fallen in an attempt to sell more toys. Like the 2011 relaunch, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh fully embraces the storybook nature of Pooh’s source material and works it into the movie in often very clever ways. Watching it 35 years later, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh remains the animated epitome of the character.

I've never been a big Winnie the Pooh fan. As a child who grew up in a household full of sic-fi nerds, the 1,000 Acre Woods really didn't hold any fascination for me. I was more interested in a future world where fully dressed apes spoke to each other and tortured humans the same way they had been.
Who wants to hang out with a bunch of bears, kangaroos, and rabbits in the woods when you could fly around space with Luke Skywalker battling stormtroopers and Darth Vader in a galaxy far, far away? I may not feel an emotional tie to Winnie the way many children and their parents do, but I can enjoy one of their adventures every once in a while.

Blu-ray: The Tigger Movie: Bounce-a-Rrrific Special Edition – A Successful Allegory on Family Values
The Tigger Movie may not have the riche cache of songs you would expect from a Disney movie, but it more than makes up for its lackluster music roster with a heartfelt allegory on the modern family. Now on Blu-ray, The Tigger Movie comes home with some additional “bounce.”
Labeled the “Bounce-a-RRRific” Special Edition, the new Blu-ray contains ten animated shorts, a “Tigger Tale” featurette with the production team and a few family tree stickers for offline family fun.
The Tigger Movie begins with a familiar opening. Tigger (voiced by Jim Cummings) bounces in on his friend Winnie The Pooh and lands squarely on Pooh’s stomach, much to the bear’s chagrin. Tigger is in the mood for some bouncing, but unfortunately none of his friends in the 100-Acre Mile have the time or interest in joining him. Well, nobody except for Roo (voiced by Nikita Hopkins), who looks...

Chicago – Even Disney’s animated canon has a few films that aren’t going to get the marketing push or special edition treatment like “Finding Nemo” and “Cinderella” will get before the end of the year. And yet there are some hidden gems deep in the catalog of the most influential and important film studio of all time. The Mouse House just released seven films on five Blu-rays and I can guarantee you that at least one will meet the needs of your family when it’s time to turn on the electric babysitter. Pick your favorite.
It’s a tough call for this critic. I’d have to go with “The Aristocats,” the 20th Disney animated film and a pretty interesting time capsule given the way it bridges the gap from the more fantasy and literature-based animation of the first few chunks of the Disney archive and the creative...

Up until 2011’s Winnie the Pooh, Disney’s solid effort in taking the pudgy yellow bear back to his classic roots, A.A. Milne’s lovable characters from the Hundred Acre Woods had devolved into little more than a cash cow franchise for Disney thanks in no small part to Eddie Guzelian, the man responsible for Disney's descent into direct-to-dvd sequel doldrums. They were churning out half-baked movies every year that still amused the kiddies but felt like a money grab to those who grew up with the classic stories and television cartoons. The Tigger Movie unfortunately falls in that spree of Winnie the Pooh movies lacking in merit, and the forced musical numbers would almost be unbearable if it weren’t for the film’s strong message about the broader meaning of family. That theme combined with some great animation redeem it at least a little.

Moviefone's Pick of the Week "Bernie" What's It About? Jack Black re-teams with "School of Rock" director Richard Linklater for a twisted dark comedy about the true story of Bernie Tiede, an eccentric Texas community leader who murdered the town's rich widow Marjorie Nugent (played by Shirley MacLaine). See It Because: Linklater has always been a great actor's director. In addition to a hilariously icy MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey (who plays a big-headed Da), the director populates the film with eccentric personalities, including real neighbors of the actual Tiede. But this is Black's movie: his disappearance into the unique and flamboyant Bernie reminds you that beneath his trademark schtick is a gifted comedic actor. (Also Available on Redbox DVD & Blu-ray | Amazon Instant Video) New on DVD & Blu-ray "Chimpanzee" What's It About? Disney's latest documentary chronicles the true story of Oscar, a young baby who was orphaned and left to fend for himself in the wild.

A Separation Listed by many as either their favorite film of 2011 or at least in their top ten, Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film winner A Separation finally comes home to DVD and Blu-ray. Personally, while I liked the movie there was an aspect to it near the end that took a little something away from the story for me. It's a film you should make sure and see and one I'm pretty sure most all of you will enjoy if not love. Buying it on the other hand, doesn't seem like a necessity.
The Dictator To my surprise I didn't even have this movie on the schedule until adding it this morning. I'm not sure if that says anything about the film or not, but I probably should have realized considering all the press releases I deleted without opening related to the title over the last several days. It’s a good time to be a Blu-ray and Disney buff. Of course, this has been true ever since Blu-ray became the format of choice, beating HD-DVD in the format wars from a few years ago. (Who doesn’t have fond memories of the format wars? Oh, sure, there were casualties, but we had fun, didn’t we? Of course, it’s not as memorable as the Rock ‘n’ Roller Cola Wars Billy Joel sang about it, but what is?) The last few months, in particular, have been fruitful for Disney fans who own Blu-ray players. In fact, it’s come to a point where such fans’ wallets are getting too light. If you haven’t reached this point yet, you may get there this week, because Disney is releasing six—count ‘em, six—films on the HD format: The Aristocats, Chimpanzee, Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure,...

Craig here with the third season of Take Three. Today: John Hurt
Take One: Brighton Rock (2010)
Hurt has alternated starring roles with supporting performances since he began acting in films with The Wild and the Willing in 1962. The amount of quality supporting turns he’s delivered over the years is vast: 10 Rillington Place, Midnight Express, The Shout, The Hit, Scandal, The Field, Contact, The Proposition, Melancholia, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are a mere few. His fine turn as accountant Phil Corkery in the Brighton Rock remake (backing up Helen Mirren, Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough and Andy Serkis) is a recent solid addition to the list and deserves due credit. Phil’s a gaunt shambles, but loyal to Mirren’s Ida, his long-time crush. He’s one of the old guard. A proud man accustomed to propping up bars whilst waxing forth about the state of the world. He’s the...

Disney legend Floyd Norman, who worked alongside Walt Disney, visited Sydney in late-2010 and caught up with If Magazine for a chat about the world of animation. This article first appeared in If #135, September 2010.
While Walt Disney was a traditionalist, he would have embraced the technology if he was alive today, Disney animation legend Floyd Norman says. .He would just have been so full of ideas and who knows what things he would want to try next,. Norman tells If Magazine.
Norman, now in his late-70s, says Walt would.ve been just like him . embracing the technology rather than dismissing it.
.Walt was enamoured with technology but looking back on it, it was really primitive in those days . it was really just basically analog technology and now with digital, it.s just expanded. Once you accept this technology, then instead of it being something that you feel is going...

It seems like these days the possibilities are endless in how film fans can enjoy their favorites at home, from renting through Netflix to downloading online via Amazon. But perhaps the most rewarding format – well, for this old-fashioned guy, at least – is to purchase the movie on Blu-ray. While many major studios – including Disney – have generally decreased the amount of bonus features and other special content offered on home video, this company consistently delivers an overall strong value to their Blu-ray releases. In this edition of the Mouse House, I’ll as share some thoughts on yet-to-be-released Blu-ray offerings.
Coming Soon (Announced)
Recently Disney announced over 30 titles from their library – some of them classics, others surprisingly forgettable – to be released on Blu-ray for the first time this year. Many also hold the title of “anniversary” editions, celebrating 10, 15, 20 years or more since their original debuts.

Robert B Sherman, who has died aged 86, was part of one of the most unusual songwriting teams of all time. He and his younger brother Richard may not be as well known as other pairs of composers and lyricists, but they will for ever be remembered as the writers of Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and a swath of other productions from Walt Disney Studios.
Their score for Mary Poppins (1964), the movie that introduced Julie Andrews to filmgoers, secured them a place in popular musical history and made them multimillionaires. Featuring songs including Jolly Holiday, Let's Go Fly a Kite and Feed the Birds, it won them two Oscars. It also included the classic A Spoonful of Sugar and the song with the one-word title that they used when they accepted the Academy awards: "All we can say is 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'.

Call this Chapter 3 of Kenny Loggins' musical life. Typically, music-makers leave bands to try their luck as break-out soloists. In the case of two-time Grammy winner Loggins, he's the salmon swimming upstream: He already has the lucrative career as a solo artist and now he's formed a band with Nashville singer-songwriters Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman.
World, meet the Blue Sky Riders.
After 30 years of being his own boss, the 64-year-old Loggins -- who began his career as part of the iconic duo of Loggins and Messina -- says he just knew in his gut that it was time for a reinvention. Why? The "juice" was gone, he said. "I just didn't know what to write about anymore."
Scary words from the man who brought us such hits as "Celebrate Me Home" and "Footloose." And would the 70s have been the same without Loggins and Messina's "Angry Eyes" or...
