Retroware’s Toxic Crusaders made an appearance during the Mix Summer Games Showcase with a brand new gameplay trailer, as well as more content reveal for the game. Unfortunately, that Q2 2025 release window has been pushed back to Q3 2025, but you know how the saying goes when it comes to waiting.
As you might already know, you can play as all the members of the original Toxic Crusaders gang, including Toxie, Nozone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, and Headbanger, along with Toxie’s girlfriend, Yvonne, and even Toxie’s mom, Mrs. Junko. There’s also the Tag Out System, where players will be able to switch between different Crusaders when its corresponding meter is full.
There will also be new level environments inspired from Troma films, such as Class of Nuke ‘Em High and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. The game will also feature new bosses, and not just the expected Dr.

Ahoy Comics Launches Toxic Crusaders: "Join in the rebirth of the greatest and grossest animated-series sensation of all time: Toxic Crusaders, an all-new limited comic book series coming this September featuring the Toxic Avenger of Troma Entertainment fame alongside fellow mutants No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, and the all-new character Fungirl. The five-issue series from acclaimed Syracuse-based comic book publisher Ahoy Comics will be written by The Nib founder and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Matt Bors — whose recent revival of the Toxic Avenger in comics received widespread acclaim — and feature art by debut talent Tristan Wright.
“In the aftermath of the chemical spill that created Toxie, other mutants arose — and they have united to wage war against an alien conspiracy,” said writer Matt Bors. “We are taking everything from the original Toxic Crusaders cartoon —gross mutations, evil aliens, and over-the-top ecological action — to bring readers a must-read mutant monthly.”

In addition to Toxic Crusaders, fellow ’90s property Street Sharks is also coming back to life here in 2025, with IGN announcing a new comic book series from Idw Publishing.
The five issue limited series will be launching in September, written by Stephanie Williams (Trial of the Amazons) and illustrated by Ariel Medel (Tmnt vs Street Fighter).
Idw previews, “Based on the classic animated series, the upcoming comics will thrill readers as the Sharks protect Fission City from a range of gene-slammed threats, including super-strong and monstrous lobsters and squids, and diabolical mad scientists that transform into vicious piranha monsters. The comic will deliver on everything fans loved from the hit show and the tone of its era, from the Sharks riding cool motorcycles to eating a lot of burgers and metal while swimming through the city’s concrete to take down the bad guys.”

Remember the cult hit from 1984 that made Troma Entertainment notorious for its schlockiness? Finally, The Toxic Avenger is returning to the big screen once again. The franchise has been equally funny, brutal, and strangely charming. The original film mixed slapstick violence with a bit of satire. After many decades, the reboot looks to be authentic to its roots while introducing something new for the younger audience.
However, the path to this remake has not been easy. After premiering to a select audience, the film mysteriously disappeared. The movie even had big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Guillermo Del Toro attached to it at some points. Now that it appears to be finished, let’s explore the actors, storyline, and all the relevant details on this radioactive resurrection.

Back in 1984, Troma Entertainment brought the world The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), a film about “the first superhero from New Jersey.” That film spawned a franchise, leading to The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000), a stage musical, and an animated series called Toxic Crusaders. For a long time, we’ve been hearing that Troma wanted to make a Toxic Avenger 5 – but instead doing that, they have loaned out the rights to Legendary Pictures, allowing them to make a remake of the original film that’s set to reach theatres on August 29th, courtesy of Cineverse. In anticipation of the film’s long-awaited release, we have put together a list of Everything We Know About the Toxic Avenger Remake… and here we go:

The Toxic Avenger is a 2023 American superhero black comedy splatter film written and directed by Macon Blair. It is the fifth installment in a reboot of The Toxic Avenger film series. There was a time after the film was finally complete when fans wondered if they would ever see it.
It was recently revealed that ‘Toxic Avenger’ will be released this summer, on August 29, 2025. Emmy winner Peter Dinklage will play the Toxic Avenger! The film will follow janitor Winston Gooze, who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters, and corrupt CEOs to save his relationship with his son.
In December 2018, Legendary Pictures won the rights to reboot The Toxic Avenger, with the original’s producers, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment, returning. In March 2019, Macon Blair was announced to write and direct. Of the script,...

The first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger has arrived and it's violent, weird, and unhinged...which we're guessing is pretty much everything you'd want from a movie featuring the beloved Troma Entertainment cult hero.
Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews at film festivals in 2023 (the movie has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), it's been a battle to get The Toxic Avenger into theaters and, when it is finally released this summer, it will be unrated.
Based on the jaw-dropping gore - that's not hyperbole; someone literally loses their jaw here - it's not exactly hard to see why this movie didn't receive an R or even Nc-17 rating from the MPAA.
"The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd's original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature," director Macon Blair recently said, "with some influence from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon's look, while also trying to do something new...

The new images for The Toxic Avengergive a closer look at Peter Dinklage's hero character. The Toxic Avenger is a remake of the classic 1984 film of the same name. The movie tells the story of a janitor named Winston Gooze who, after falling into toxic waste, evolves into the eponymous Toxic Avenger. The new version of the horror comedy features a star-studded leading cast including Dinklage, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, and Taylour Paige. The movie initially premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 but now has distribution for this summer, opening on August 29.
Now, Entertainment Weekly has revealed new images of Dinklage in his Toxic Avenger role. The images show the star in full makeup all over his entire body. New images have revealed the best look yet at the new Toxie. Starring Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, the reboot of The Toxic Avenger is coming to theaters on Aug. 29, 2025.
Previously, very little had been revealed from the remake. The only shot that's been released of Toxie was from behind the character, keeping his appearance mostly a mystery. Per Entertainment Weekly, that has changed with brand-new images released of the new Toxie. Check out the new photos below.
In the film, Dinklage plays Winston Gooze, a chemical factory janitor who becomes transformed into a monstrous mutant after a freak industrial accident. He uses his newfound superhuman strength to become a vigilante, targeting the town's criminals. EW reports that actor and movement artist Luisa Guerreiro provides the physical performance of Toxie underneath the makeup and costume.

A new year is upon us, and with it, another “Where is it??” for Retroware’s Toxic Crusaders. It looked to be coming this past Fall (with the demo making that seem all the more likely), but that obviously never happened. So what’s the deal? Retroware has heard your cries, and has released a new development video explaining just where the title is in its current form, and just what’s been going on.
For starters, the team acknowledges the view from some that after the initial reveal and subsequent demo release, the game seemingly “fell off the planet,” which they immediately rebuff by going over the several convention stops where they showcased the game. In amongst getting the assets, cutscenes and the like into the game, the team has been cramming in references to not only the Toxic Avenger series of films, but also every Troma movie in their 50-year catalogue.

Although few theatrical franchises receive animated TV spinoffs like Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, and Ghostbusters did, this '80s trend predicted major change in 2020s Hollywood. While the blockbuster may have been born in the ‘70s with hits like Jaws, Star Wars, and Alien, the ‘80s was where the movie franchise truly flourished. The aforementioned hits all received sequels that expanded their fictional worlds and earned staggering sums at the box office, but the decade was also home to a slew of huge franchises that continue to this day. These include the Ghostbusters movies, the Gremlins series, and the Back to the Future franchise.

Remember when they used to make animated series out of any hit franchise going? Mark Harrison does…
Let’s dive straight in…
Rambo: The Force Of Freedom
In an alternate ending for 1982’s First Blood, traumatised Vietnam War veteran John Rambo commits suicide. However, in post-production, director Ted Kotcheff and writer/star Sylvester Stallone opted for the canon ending where Rambo surrenders.
Had they kept the original, we certainly wouldn’t have four more Rambo sequels, and it might have dented the film’s viability for animated spin-off series as well. As it is, Ruby-Spears Productions created Rambo: The Force Of Freedom, a G.I. Joe-alike action series that ran for 65 episodes in 1986.
Battling the evil organisation S.A.V.A.G.E., Rambo and his “toyetic” friends travel the globe, pausing only to play with animals and teach children how to be good. Stallone was reportedly not best pleased but continued pancaking enemy combatants...

At first glance, The Toxic Avenger doesn't seem like the Saturday morning cartoon material. The cult classic superhero film from Troma is known for its high levels of gore, making for a campy and crass low-budget affair that's also one of the creepier movies of its genre. However, in 1991, Toxie managed to clean up his act with a short-lived animated series titled Toxic Crusaders hailing from Troma co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. Now, the B movie production company is bringing the band back together with a digitally remastered Blu-ray containing all 13 episodes of Toxie and friends' adventures. It's set to release on December 10.

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, it wasn’t unusual for violent movies like RoboCop and Rambo to be turned into Saturday morning cartoons for kids, but The Toxic Avenger still seemed like an unlikely candidate — until the 1984 low-budget gorefest was cleaned up for “Toxic Crusaders” in 1991.
An environmentally-conscious superhero cartoon in the vein of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Captain Planet,” the show ran for one season. All 13 episodes are coming to Blu-ray from Troma on December 10.
While originally animated on 16mm film, “Toxic Crusaders” was mastered on videotape for broadcast, including all digital effects and transitions. To present the series in the best possible quality, Troma has used advanced AI models to upscale the standard definition masters in high definition to capture the original broadcast’s intended experience.

The 1973 musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” immortalized in the 1975 film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” is getting a side-scrolling video game adaptation. “The Rocky Horror Show Video Game” is set for release next month across major consoles and Steam for computer platforms, timed to the Halloween spooky season.
Befitting the musical nature of “Rocky Horror,” the project even includes chiptune versions of songs from the films — including, but of course, the “Time Warp.” The game features 8-bit-styled graphics bringing the show’s sets and characters to life, combining ’80s nostalgia with the show’s ’70s retro vibes in the release from FreakZone Games and Metal X Entertainment/Bit Bot Media.
“‘The Rocky Horror Show’ is a unique experience that transcends traditional entertainment, and we wanted to bring that magic to gamers — whether they’re already fans of the IP or discovering it for the first time,” producer Joshua Viola said in a Thursday statement.

New Biker Mice from Mars comic series to explore their origin story while maintaining the tone and style of the original '90s animated series. The cover art released ahead of the series' release hints at unadulterated, kid-friendly badassery with a nod to Akira. The series will delve into dark themes without going overly dark, staying true to the beloved zaniness of the classic Biker Mice from Mars.
Biker Mice from Mars is easily one of the most hardcore cartoons of the 90s era, even when compared to other shows of its kind like Street Sharks, Toxic Crusaders, and - of course - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And now, the iconic Throttle, Modo, and Vinnie are having their origin stories fully explored for the first time in the franchises history in an all-new Oni Press comic series, one that promises to stay true to the TV shows original tone and style.

Horror movies have a long history of infiltrating Saturday morning television, yet many iconic films never received cartoon adaptations. In a medium where Beetlejuice is a mischievous prankster, Audrey II is a rapping prehistoric plant, and The Mummy’s Imhotep brought pulp-inspired adventures to the small screen, horror found a home and a younger audience. However, this raises questions about the limits of a Y-7 rating, the potential for other characters to have their own cartoons, and whether these adaptations could do justice to their respective franchises. As numerous horror enthusiasts clutch their remotes, pondering what could have been, perhaps it's not too late to entertain the idea of a fresh wave of creepy cartoons.

The upcoming reboot of The Toxic Avenger has violence that feels like a live-action version of Itchy & Scratchy, according to director Macon Blair.
A reimagining of the cult classic dark comedy from Troma, The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as a man whose exposure to toxic chemicals transforms him into a mutated vigilante. The previous movies in the series were known for their over-the-top violence, and speaking with Empire, Blair confirms that his reboot will be carrying over this quality. He likens the movie's violence to the Itchy & Scratchy cartoons from The Simpsons, revealing how one particular kill scene sounds like something that Itchy would do to Scratchy.

The Toxic Crusaders cartoon series played a crucial role in establishing the pop culture legacy of The Toxic Avenger franchise. Although the Toxic Crusaders cartoon had to tone down violence and humor, it successfully translated the defining aspects of the original film to animation. Toxic Crusaders introduced a cast of characters and spawned tie-in products, contributing to the overall success of the brand and paving the way for a potential reboot targeting a younger audience in the future.
From the moment Lloyd Kaufman's 1984 classic The Toxic Avenger hit silver screens across New York City, the titular character has maintained the kind of pop culture status that other cult icons of any era could only hope to achieve. Despite being introduced in classic Troma fashion and helping to establish the studio's over-the-top stylings, Toxie and his tale of unlikely stardom have only ever waned in popularity rather than fading from view altogether.

The Toxic Avenger shared the first footage of its titular vigilante — armed with a mission and a mop — from the horror-comedy film starring Peter Dinklage.
Macon Blair’s feature reimagines the original 1984 cult-favorite movie and premiered this month at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. The Legendary Entertainment project, which has not yet announced a release date, stars Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor whose employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness. After robbing the company, Winston falls into toxic waste and aims to right society’s wrongs as the Toxic Avenger.
In the footage, a news anchor announces, “A group of armed extremists, the Nasty Lads — they’ve taken hostages at a Miss Meat lunchatorium downtown.” This leads to the introduction of the Toxic Avenger, a superhero who takes matters into his own hands.

A new preview for The Toxic Avenger shows off the cast of the upcoming horror remake.
Shared exclusively by Entertainment Weekly, the teaser images highlight Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a lowly janitor at a chemical factory who is eventually mutated into the film's titular hero. "There is a terrible industrial accident that renders him a mutant and an outcast, but also gives him some super strength and super abilities that sets him on a path of being an unlikely vigilante in this downward-spiraling society," director Macon Blair explained. "Similar to the original Toxic Avenger, he's singularly unqualified to be a hero. He's not especially brave, he's not especially crafty, but he has his heart in the right place, and he starts taking it to the limit when he's pushed into a corner."

Since the hype of the Barbie movie took off, it has opened up a world of countless possibilities for Mattel. The company can now explore bringing more of its iconic characters to life. However, among other popular Mattel franchises like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Hot Wheels and Monster High, Street Sharks seem ideal for the Barbie treatment and for a blockbuster project of their very own.
Introduced in 1994 and famously promoted by The Fast and the Furious actor Vin Diesel, Street Sharks emerged as a toy line reminiscent of the longer-enduring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Accompanied by a television series launched in the same year as their action figures, Street Sharks followed the story of four brothers who transformed into heroic shark monsters due to the experiments of the mad scientist Dr. Paradigm (also known as Dr. Piranoid). With humanity on the line and Dr. Paranoid's...

Back in 1991, Troma‘s Toxic Avenger franchise – which is full of nudity and vulgarity, and soaked in bodily fluids – unexpectedly got a kid-friendly spin-off with the animated series Toxic Crusaders… and a few months ago, Retrowave announced that they’re bringing the Toxic Crusaders back in a beat ’em up video game that’s described as a “radical, radioactive romp for a new era, featuring awesome action, crushing combos and more toxic waste than you’ll know what to do with!” The Toxic Crusaders game is expected to reach PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One sometime in 2024, and today a trailer for the game has arrived online! You can watch it in the embed above.
Here’s the set-up for the Toxic Crusaders video game: When the evil Dr. Killemoff attacks, only one team of hideously deformed creatures of superhuman size and strength stands between him...

Retroware surprised everyone earlier this year with the announcement that they’re working on a throwback beat-’em-up based on the Toxic Crusaders cartoon. They’ve now released a new trailer for the brawler that was shown at the Guerilla Collective Showcase, featuring more action involving Toxie and the gang.
The story sees Dr. Killemoff and his Radiation Rangers once again causing trouble, and it’s up to Toxie and his team of hideously deformed creatures of superhuman size and strength to stop Dr. Killemoff and his plans for global pollution.
Similar to Dotemu’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge last year, Toxic Crusaders will see you as Toxie with up to three other players in an arcade-style beat-’em-up. You’ll be able to choose from seven playable characters, including Toxie, No-Zone, Junkyard, Major Disaster, Headbanger, Toxie’s musically “gifted” girlfriend Yvonne, and the mother of all mothers,...
