A movie I have found in the dark year of 2021 with truly strong female characters.
This anime was underrated and still is. Hardly the dorky kids movie as noted, i still come back to this 10 years after i first saw it. One of the better movies released.
The animation while not perfect is good, camera tricks give it a 3D feel and the story is still as good today even after i grew up and saw ground-breakers like Neon Genesis Evangelion and RahXephon. It has nowhere near the depth obviously but try to see it from a lighthearted view. It's a story to entertain, not to question.
Still one of my favourites I come back too when i feel like a giggle on over more lighthearted animes. Not to say its a childish movies, there are surprisingly sad moments in this and you need a sense of humour to see it all.

This anime classic adapts one of the first stories in the series in which a rogue and brave adventurer called Cobra is the absolute starring. In the 24th Century, space pirate Cobra, a former space pirate presumed dead two years ago and who has modified his face and voice to flee from his space enemies. He is an adventurous and two-fisted outlaw who travels across different planets in space, evading the Space Mafia Guild and their leader, his fearsome arch nemesis Crystal Boy. Along the way, Cobra joins forces with bounty huntress Jane Flower, whom he falls in love with, and her sisters to save the planet Milos. Jane turns out to be one of the last three of the Miras Star People, and she enlists Cobra to help her get back to her planet and find her two identical sisters. But the leader of the Galactic Guild, a powerful criminal organization, is following their track with the same goal. The first sister turns out to be mind controlled by Crystal Boy and she transfers her love for Cobra to her other sister, who is on a snow planet. Cobra then takes this new sister to the Miras planet, which is actually a giant planet-shaped spaceship, to keep Crystal Boy from taking control of the planet and using it to destroy an entire galaxy . Cobra has to join three sisters: Jane, Dominique, Catherine, they all look the same and are really beautiful. Aided by his jealous android Andromeda, Cobra will have to face the evil plans of the Galactic Gold. In the farthest reaches of space... You can never go too far. Hyper-dimensional Multiplane Animation. Experience 3D depth With your naked eyes!. The most wanted man in the entire universe !.
A trip to the golden age of science fiction anime with this film, based on the 'Shonen' (manga aimed at teenage male audiences) by the legendary Mangaka, Buichi Terasawa. Starring Cobra, he's a famed space pirate with a "psychogun" for a left arm joins a bounty huntress on a quest to save her world, only to find himself battling an old enemy. "Cobra", like many animes before and after it, began off as a manga, this one by the artist Buichi Terasawa. Having at first Alain Delon in mind, later modifying his hero's physique to resemble Delon's commercial rival, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and adding a special aura as a kind of rogue Harrison Ford's Han Solo, Terasawa created a role that was valiant, cynical, prone to risk-taking but confident enough to know he will win, always with a cigaret in his mouth à la "Le magnifique" and here confronting a bizarre and wonderful villain nicknamed Golden Galactic. The film is quite good with full of adventure, action, fantasy and with many gadgets and action scenes in the style of James Bond. Supposedly this film was apparented to have been animated in a 'revolutionary process' which makes it look like it was 3-D without the glasses, but it was a flop. Not having known that beforehand, I didn't catch it at all. I'm pretty sure if I watched it again now that I do know that, it wouldn't seem any more 3-D than it did before. In fact, I don't even have the slightest idea what the revolutionary process could possibly be.
¨Space Adventure Cobra¨ (1982) belongs to the successful Japanese series titled ¨Space Cobra¨ (1982-1983) made up of 31 episodes, concerning Space Pirate Cobra, a womanizing vagabond with a mysterious past and a powerful "psychogun" for a hand, fights the galaxy spanning crime syndicate, The Pirate Guild. The motion picture was well directed by Osamu Dezaki(1943-2011). He was a good craftsman and notable cartoonist who participated in several TV series, videos and animes, such as: ¨The Heroic Elegy of Confucius¨, ¨Black Jack¨, ¨Genji¨ , ¨Air¨, ¨Yuki no Jo-Oh¨, ¨Clannad¨, ¨Gorugo 13: Queen Bee¨, among others . ¨Space Adventure Cobra¨(1982) rating: 6.5/10. Well worth watching.

This 1982 anime based on the comic books by Buichi Terasawa centres around the adventures of the infamous Space Pirate Cobra. After Cobra falls for the sultry bounty hunter Jane, he finds himself embroiled in an intergalactic power struggle. This film is best known for its attempt to re-create the 3D movie experience without the need for cardboard glasses. While this process makes for a few amazing and interesting shots, you can hardly tell the difference. The 3D effect may be limited, but the attempt makes for interesting cinematography. Director Osamu Dezaki can be applauded for combining the involving story and the stunning visuals, without letting one element drown out the other. If a few of the shots look familiar, it's because the film was showcased in Matthew Sweet's video for his song "Girlfriend." You can also look for quite a few references to 'Star Wars,' 'Star Trek,' '2001,' and a rip off of the 'Superman' theme during a heated battle scene. 'Space Adventure Cobra' is best recommended for those already familiar with this genre, as it provides an excellent example of the beginnings of modern Anime.
On a scale of 1 to 11, 11 being an example of "taking it up a notch," 'Cobra' gets a 7.

With AMAZING animation, beautiful soundtrack composed of hidden references (did somebody say "Superman" by Richard Donner) and highly influential, since somebody that goes with the name of James Cameron must have noticed the scene with Crystal Boy walking into the flames and then translated it four years after into an actual live-action movie named Terminator. It's incredible how many of these Hollywood directors copied or "were influenced" by anime, isn't it?

- CuriosidadesThe film was featured in Matthew Sweet: Girlfriend (1991).
- Erros de gravaçãoJohn Guerrasio is listed in the credits as voicing Cobra in the Manga UK dub, when it was in fact the late William Dufris who voiced the character. The reason for this casting error is unknown (some speculate it was because Guerrasio was originally intended to voice Cobra before they replaced him with Dufris and that they accidentally left John Guerrasio in the credits, forgetting to change it).
