We have needed to put a face to the immigration issues and injustices that have taken place in our country. One thing missing when we hear some of our leaders speak about immigration is compassion. Not only does this story bring love into the picture, but it paints a picture of humanity.
This is a fast-moving action film that has many twists and turns. It's a love story, a vignette of life, and a powerful drama all in one. A big bowl of popcorn and a few margarittas and you will have the time of your life watching this flick. Very well written, acted and directed.
Revealing who is good and who is ROTTEN. If you look deep and listen carefully you will see that it doesn't matter if you are related to somebody. It does not matter in the end because you can have a toxic family Dysfunctional Family full of wicked people and not even know it until one day you wake up and you realize they are guilty of a gruesome horrendous crime. And worse than that they justify it. So this movie will tell you that family members may be tied by Blood but not all in most cases are good people. There is such thing as toxic family and family members who choose the dark side and the wicked side and the greedy side. I will say one thing the character Brad Johnson portrays is excellent. A real man. A man of strong good morals. A stand-up guy. Dignity. A man of Honor and courage. Rare to find. Fabulous movie.
The wonderful acting by Sigal Erez is likely to be the first outstanding thing that one notices in this film. Her character is created with intensity, partly by the amazing acting and partly by the well-written script. But the entire cast is excellent, including fine performances by actors whose work I had not previously known--for example, Julio Dolce Vita, Carlos Carrasco, and Brian Bloom are especially good. Bloom's anger and brutality are as convincing as the reassuring humanity of Dolce Vita and Carrasco. (Bloom's astonishing feat of leaping, in one fast action scene, is among the most dextrous film leaps that I've seen).
The story concerns the troubled lives of border-crossing Latinas and Latinos, and also the equally troubled history of the official responses to these immigrants in the U.S. But the film is never preachy. The action is fast or tender, always moving, convincing, and shot with the art that conceals art. Like the careful and and smart photography, the awareness of the film's deeper resonance is likely to occur to you only later, when you return to it, which I have already done several times.
Movies with which to compare this one include THE BORDER, EL NORTE, and LONE STAR. Nowhere among these movies is any performance as subtle, skillful, and deep as what Sigal Erez achieves in ACROSS THE LINE. And under Spottl's superb direction, this film is an outstanding contribution to that line of good movies. Highly recommended--one of the very best recent films.

Across the Line (2000) is a truthful representation of both hope and corruption, focusing on critical events transpiring at America's border with Mexico and known both to those who live on the "line" (physical and metaphorical) and to those with the courage to cross it. Further it is a fine example of the filmmaker's art, featuring convincing portrayals underpinned by a convincing script and the directorial talent of Martin Spottl.
