It looks like May will be a somewhat busy month in regards to horror and sci-fi VOD/Digital HD releases, as we have thirteen different titles arriving before Memorial Day. Dark Sky Films is kicking things off with Adrián García Bogliano’s Scherzo Diabolico, and for those of you wanting to check out the latest from Kane Hodder, The Haunting of Alice D arrives on all digital platforms the very same day.
Scream Factory is unleashing their latest film, Bite, on VOD on May 6th, and Regression, the mystery thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, is getting released on May 10th courtesy of Starz Digital. Also, one of my favorite films from the 2015 Los Angeles Film Fest, Crush the Skull, is being released on May 17th courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures.
Other notable VOD titles for May 2016 include The Offering, What We Become, The Curse of Sleeping Beauty, and The Ones Below.

Kaboom
Opens: 2011
Cast: Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Juno Temple, Kelly Lynch, James Duval
Director: Gregg Araki
Summary: Smith's everyday life in the dorm - hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella, hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London, lusting for his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor - all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night.
Analysis: A year after "Thelma and Louise" came "The Living End", an independent film which had a similar premise but made the protagonists two gay HIV+ men. It was raw, intense and signalled the arrival of a new talent in the form of filmmaker Gregg Araki. In the subsequent two decades, he's delivered several trippy films involving young, good-looking omnisexual people having lots of graphic sex and dealing with some wacky cobbled together plot shenanigans.
The tone has ranged the light-hearted "Splendor" and "Nowhere" to the darker "Mysterious Skin...

Amsterdam -- Exhibs just wanna have fun.
Despite the global recession, movie theater operators were in festive mood during Cinema Expo, which ended its four-day run at the Rai convention center on Thursday -- and why not? As in the U.S., boxoffice is booming in most international territories.
The credit crunch has stalled many digital screen conversions. But exhibs came away pleased with sneak peeks of films screened throughout the week, and most believe d-cinema and 3-D projection will spread through the marketplace eventually, further bolstering business.
"It's been a really great week, with many exciting movies and exciting lineups," said Peter Janovsky of Hollywood Megaplex, which operates 48 screens in five Austrian theaters. "In 2009, we have had a very good year -- the best in three years -- and the future looks positive."
Studio participation also remained strong, though as with recent domestic confabs, Universal sat out Cinema Expo this year.
