I know a thing or two about made-for-television horror movies, largely because I watch them almost religiously. I’ve seen the good ones (Home for the Holidays), the bad ones (Nightmare on the 13th Floor), and the classic ones (Don’t Go to Sleep). A lot of the biggest swings the horror genre has taken historically have been on small screens. Where else are you going to get an expansive adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot? CBS, that’s where.
Still, the general audience constraints often neuter what would otherwise be pretty nasty offerings. On network television, you can only get away with so much. Jodie Foster can go years without making a movie.
“I’m picky,” she admits. “I’m not really interested in acting just for the sake of acting. It has to really speak to me.”
It’s a few hours before the Cannes premiere of “Vie Privée,” a French thriller that Foster, despite her natural aversion to performing, found impossible to resist. After meeting Rebecca Zlotowski, the French filmmaker who also wrote the script, Foster discovered they shared a passion for character development and narrative. And the story, which finds Foster playing a therapist who becomes convinced that her patient’s suicide is actually a murder, was too tangled and intriguing to turn down.
“Rebecca has this command of the intellectual world, as well as the emotional world,” the 62-year-old Foster says. “We think about cinema in the same way. She wanted to make sure that the audience was brought into...

Few would have been surprised if Cyndi Lauper had entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during her first year of eligibility back in 2008. After all, she’s one of the most successful artists of the Eighties, and songs like “Time After Time,” “True Colors,” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” have enjoyed stunning staying power. The video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” has racked up 1.5 billion plays on YouTube; the song itself 1.4 billion plays on Spotify. (And that’s not even getting into the juggernaut of Kinky Boots.

Although Roseanne’s spinoff The Conners never mentioned Martin Mull’s Leon Carp, the original show’s season 8 Christmas episode featured a historical piece of gay representation centered on the supporting character. One of the harsh realities of rewatching Roseanne is the realization that some of the show’s jokes have aged terribly. However, for every gag that feels tasteless or problematic in 2024, there are moments that stand out as strikingly progressive. Roseanne’s story of a working-class middle-American family tackled poverty, gay rights, racial discrimination, parental abuse, and a whole host of other hot-button issues with surprising tact and dexterity.

“Yeah, to you it’s Thanksgiving; to me it’s Thursday.”
If you’re looking for ways to occupy yourself today after the parade is over (and football isn’t your thing), don’t sweat it! I’ve rounded up the best Thanksgiving-themed movies to entertain you all day, before and after the kids go to bed. So after you’ve sufficiently filled up on overdone turkey, dry dinner rolls, and extra helpings of green bean casserole, nestle up on the couch with some of these Thanksgiving holiday favorites.
Our favorite Thanksgiving movies
Our all-time favorite, and probably the most recognizable, is the 1987 classic “Plains, Trains and Automobiles” starring Steve Martin and John Candy. We also are partial to 1995’s “Home for the Holidays” and 1992’s “Scent of a Woman”, which are both high on our list.

'Tis the season for everyone's annual holiday movie watch (and/or re-watch), that magical time of year where we gorge ourselves on all manner of films that take place in and around the holidays. For some cinephiles, this means delving into the darkest depths of "is it a Christmas movie because it has one scene with a decorated tree in it?," while for others, it means a first-time or 70th-time viewing of canonized holiday classics. One of the joys of watching a vintage Christmas film for the first time is seeing some of your favorite actors turn up looking impossibly young. For instance, this writer just watched 1995's "Home for the Holidays" the other night, and was delighted to see a younger Robert Downey Jr. doing his signature motormouth patter.
While that film is a bit obscure in the holiday canon, "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" is a movie that almost needs no introduction.

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.
Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

While many people tend to immediately switch into Holiday Mode after Halloween has passed by, watching movies like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Home for the Holidays, or a variety of Christmas classics, new releases this weekend seem to be clinging onto the more dark and macabre genre of movies to choose from this week. Sales from the box office last week are still neck and neck with Venom: The Last Dance maintaining the lead and The Wild Robot reclaiming the #2 spot, surpassing the horror sequel, Smile 2.

The American TV-movie has gained a bad rap over the years, but there was a time when folks looked forward to these flicks — and not in an ironic sense or a need to hate-watch.
That period of kinder and less cynical viewership was surely in the 1970s and ’80s when the made-for-television movie became more widespread. The “movie of the week” format took off in the former decade, with the major networks at the time devoting blocks in their schedules to these standalone, small-screen features. And one of the more revisited genres was horror. Duel, The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Trilogy of Terror, Are You in the House Alone?, The Initiation of Sarah. These are just a few of the classic telefilms that scared a whole generation of viewers.

It’s hard to think of an actor managing his career after leaving a franchise better than has Robert Downey Jr. And that makes his announced return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — in which he’ll be playing the villainous character Dr. Doom in forthcoming “Avengers” sequels, as announced this weekend — come as a surprise.
Downey’s “Iron Man” kicked off of the MCU in 2008, and his character Tony Stark’s death, in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” was a climax of sorts. “Endgame” represented a culmination of all Marvel storytelling to that point: Downey’s definitive departure meant that this particular set of stories, in which wisecracking defense contractor sat at the emotional center, was done.
What immediately followed his departure was a major hiccup, with his film “Dolittle” bombing critically and commercially in early 2020. It was an attempted franchise-starter, and a cynical one: Downey has said since that he was...

Lauper went on to name 2020’s folklore as the album that made her a fan. “I first started listening during the pandemic,” she explained, “when she went and hibernated and did that wonderful folk record. It was wonderful. I’m proud of her.”
The timing checks out, as Lauper recruited Swift to perform during her “Home for the Holidays” livestream several months after the release of folklore. The following year, Lauper praised the record in an interview with Rolling Stone, saying, “She’s always been a wonderful writer, but that album was poetry.”

Jodie Foster is opening up about her filmmaking process and why she never fully “fell in love” with the acting side of the industry.
During a recent conversation with Jodie Comer for Interview magazine, the Oscar winner admitted she’s “not naturally an actor.”
“I just got stuck in it when I was three,” she explained. “I probably would’ve been a lawyer or a college professor. It’s just not my way. So I loved the technical sides of filmmaking, but I never fell in love with the acting part. It was against my nature, and I think has made me a richer person because of it.”
Throughout what has become a decades-long acting career, the True Detective star said she’s also learned a lot about herself, noting that she used to isolate herself from her co-stars on set.

Even though Jodie Foster worked with multi-take director David Fincher on “Panic Room,” that doesn’t mean she necessarily enjoys that kind of process. Speaking with Jodie Comer for Interview magazine, Foster admitted that she tends not to get too in her own head about acting and, at one point in her career, would even insulate herself from her co-stars.
“I’ve always made movies by myself, where it was just about my character, and I didn’t have to deal with the other actors,” Foster said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand that was selfish of me, jealously guarding something that I didn’t want to share. Now I’m learning to enter in and say, ‘How are we together and dynamic?’ Instead of it all being about me. It has been so interesting, because now I meet all these actors that do everything differently.

Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr. have a long history. Their careers have intersected over time, starting when Foster directed Downey in her 1995 Thanksgiving comedy “Home for the Holidays,” where he played the sweet-natured but rebellious black sheep of the family. More recently, both were nominated in supporting categories at this year’s Oscars — Foster was nominated for her role as an encouraging swim coach in “Nyad,” and Downey won for playing a villainous government official in “Oppenheimer” — and played key roles in HBO limited series. Foster was a hard-bitten cop in “True Detective: Night Country,” writer-director Issa López’s reimagining of the crime franchise that centered on Alaska Native communities. Downey tackled four roles — a CIA agent, a university professor, a congressman and an indie filmmaker, each representing a facet of the American power structure — in Korean director Park Chan-wook’s adaptation of the post-Vietnam War novel “The Sympathizer.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the biggest movie stars of our generation. The actor recently won his first Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s monumental 2023 historical drama Oppenheimer. But, despite his many impressive movie roles, Downey Jr. will forever be Iron Man for Marvel fans.
The 59-year-old actor also won fans over after candidly talking about his battle with drug addiction and how he overcame it. However, long before the Iron Man actor was on his road to redemption, he played the role of a drug addict in a forgotten 1987 thriller. Playing the said role catapulted him further into the dark depths of addiction.

Robert Downey Jr. is sharing his thoughts on the Jimmy Kimmel joke about him at the Oscars and seems unfazed by it.
The Oppenheimer actor won an Academy Award for his role in the Christopher Nolan-directed film. Earlier that night, Kimmel made a joke at Downey Jr’s expense and referred to his past struggles with addiction, calling Oscar night “one of the highest points” of his career.
At the award show, Downey Jr. joked back as cameras caught him reacting by laughing and pointing to his nose while miming to “keep it moving.” In a new interview, the actor was asked about the joke again.
“I don’t care,” Downey Jr. told Esquire. “I love Jimmy Kimmel. I think he’s a national treasure.”
The Iron Man star has been open about his past addiction struggles and in the same interview, Jodie Foster says she was “scared” for him.

The year is 2003. Robert Downey Jr. had just undergone a court mandated rehab to come out of his crippling drug addiction. His tryst with addiction had been holding his career growth back for quite some time. Fast forward 21 years. He’s a different man.
The Sherlock Holmes star has gone from strength to strength since then. He has won fans’ hearts. He has won the critics over. Winning an Oscar is the cherry (one which is no smaller than the ice cream) on the top. And all of this has been made possible because of one of his trait that even Jodie Foster had to recognize.
Nothing was hunky dory for Robert Downey Jr.

Jodie Foster opened up to Esquire magazine as part of its Robert Downey Jr. cover story about what it was like directing him in the 1995 Thanksgiving comedy “Home for the Holidays.” The film marked Foster’s second outing as a feature film director after 1991’s “Little Man Tate.” Production kicked off in early 1995, which overlapped with Downey’s addiction struggles. He’d be arrested the following year for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded gun.

Jodie Foster, the two-time Oscar-winning actress riding high off her performances in Nyad and True Detective: Night Country, will be honored with a hand and footprint ceremony during the TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Tuesday.
Foster, 61, will leave her mark in cement in the courtyard of the iconic Tcl Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard on Friday, April 19 during the 15th annual event.
“The truth is Jodie Foster deserves a hand and footprint ceremony solely for her work in 1976 alone — films she made when she was 13 years old — Taxi Driver, Bugsy Malone, Freaky Friday and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. You could see her range already,” said TCM host Ben Mankiewicz in a statement.
