At Monday’s Cannes Docs Palestine showcase, where four works in progress were pitched to industry delegates, spokespersons of the Palestine Film Institute (Pfi) called for Cannes and key decision-makers to amplify the voice of Palestinian filmmakers, as the war in Gaza is causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

Shailene Woodley (“Big Little Lies”) is set to headline “A Beautiful Journey,” an English-language comedy-drama feature from French writer-director Nathalie Marchak (“Out of Instinct”).

“A Beautiful Journey” is being produced by Anonymous Federation, a joint venture between Anonymous Content and Federation Studios, and Gabman, the company founded by Valerie Garcia, who previously co-headed one of France’s leading distribution shingles, Mars Films.

Rosalie Cimino, a former top agent at Paris-based firm Ubba, will produce on behalf of Anonymous Federation, while Garcia will produce on behalf of Gabman. Principal photography will begin in the fall.

Woodley will play Mary, an ex-swimming champion who now works as a mermaid at the New York Aquarium, struggling to raise her 7-year-old son, Lulu, on her own. When they get evicted, to protect him, she pretends they are about to embark on a beautiful journey. But in doing so, she’s beginning to lose — and eventually find — herself.

Brazil's I'm Still Here captured Best International Feature at the 2025 Oscars on Sunday, becoming the country's first winner in this category after four previous nominations.

Directed by Walter Salles, I'm Still Here stars Fernanda Torres as a mother forced to reinvent herself when her family's life is shattered by an act of arbitrary violence during the tightening grip of a military dictatorship in Brazil, 1971. Walter Salles’ deeply moving drama “I’m Still Here” has won the Academy Award for best international feature, marking a historic first for Brazil.

The film, which tells the real-life story of Eunice Paiva’s decades-long search for justice after her husband’s disappearance during Brazil’s military dictatorship, has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. Its surprise nomination for best picture — alongside expected nods for international feature and best actress for star Fernanda Torres — solidified its status as a major contender.

The film beat out France’s “Emilia Perez,” Germany’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” Denmark’s “The Girl With the Needle” and Latvia’s “Flow.”

“I’m so honored to receive this, and in such an extraordinary group of filmmakers,” Salles said during his acceptance speech. “This goes to a woman who, after a loss suffered during an authoritarian regime, decided not to bend. And to resist.

With her Oscar win for the Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez,” Zoe Saldaña joins a short list of performers who have won for non-English language roles. She’s just the third ever to do so for Best Supporting Actress, after Penélope Cruz for “Vicky Christina Barcelona” and Yuh-jung Youn in “Minari.”

But there is further significance in Saldaña’s victory. While several actors have won for non-English roles in American movies, such as Cruz and Youn, Saldaña is the first acting winner from a Best International Feature Oscar nominee in 25 years – since Roberto Benigni exuberantly won Best Actor for 1998’s “Life is Beautiful.” Both that film and “Emilia Pérez” were also Best Picture nominees.

In Oscar history, in fact, Saldaña and Benigni are the only two actors to win for movies also nominated in the international cateorgy, which was referred to as Best Foreign-Language Film in the era when “Life is Beautiful” won the award.

The Oscars are coming up on March 3, and while Hollywood is buzzing with predictions, let’s take a moment to address the elephant in the Dolby Theatre, the Academy doesn’t always get it right. In fact, sometimes they get it so spectacularly wrong that fans are left questioning reality.

Remember when Austin Butler lost Best Actor to Brendan Fraser? Nothing against Fraser, but Butler became Elvis, and yet, the Academy said, “Nope, let’s give it to the guy in a fat suit.”

And don’t even get us started on Crash winning Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain, a decision so controversial that even Academy voters have admitted they messed up.

Marisa Paredes, the admired Spanish actress who collaborated with Pedro Almodóvar in such films as The Flower of My Secret, All About My Mother and The Skin I Live In, has died. She was 78.

Her death was announced Tuesday by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain, which called her one of the country’s “most iconic actors … her body of work was defined by women who were strong, ambivalent, broken, passionate, enigmatic, but who were, above all, very human.”

Almodóvar told Spanish public broadcaster Rtve that “it is as if I woke up from a bad dream … I am struggling to come to terms with Marisa’s death.” In their country, she was known as “an Almodóvar girl.”

Paredes also portrayed Roberto Benigni’s socialite mother-in-law in Life Is Beautiful (1997) and the head of the orphanage in Guillermo del Toro’s horror film The Devil’s Backbone (2001), set during the Spanish Civil War.

Paredes also served as president of the Spanish Film Academy from 2000-2003 and received the industry’s highest awards, including an honorary Goya for lifetime achievement in 2018, the National Cinematography Award in 1996, and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2007.

Her final film, road movie Emergency Exit, was directed by Luis Miñarro; it filmed earlier this year and is still to be released.

The Farmagia video game will soon make its grand entrance into animation after being released on multiple gaming consoles in November. The multimedia anime franchise features character designs by Hiro Mashima, the creator of Fairy Tail and Edens Zero.

Marvelous shared the first look at the anime adaptation of Farmagia on its official YouTube channel. According to Comic Natalie, the anime TV series will premiere on Jan. 10, 2025, and share the same Japanese voice cast as its video game release. A new “Godzilla” movie is in development with “Godzilla Minus One” writer/director/visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki set to return, Toho announced on Friday.

“Godzilla Minus One,” released at the end of last year, was a surprise box office smash. The movie, made for less than $10 million, was set before the events of the original 1954 “Godzilla” movie (hence the “minus one”) and wound up making $116 million worldwide. It is the highest grossing Japanese film in United States box office history and the third most successful foreign language film in the United States.

The movie also won the Best Visual Effects Oscar at this year’s awards, beating behemoths like “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and “Napoleon.”

Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2024 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions over a six-week period that ends in early December. Italy has selected “Vermiglio” as the country’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The movie written and directed by Maura Delpero won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and will make its stateside debut at the Hamptons International Film Festival on October 10.

“Vermiglio” is set in 1944, in Vermiglio, a high mountain village of the Italian Alps where war looms as a distant but constant threat. The arrival of Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a refugee soldier, disrupts the dynamics of the local teacher’s family, changing them forever. During the four seasons marking the end of World War II, Pietro and Lucia (Martina Scrinzi), the eldest daughter of the teacher, instantly drawn to each other, led to marriage and an unexpected fate. As the world emerges from its tragedy, the family will face its own.

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.

Going into the documentary “From Darkness to Light,” most reasonably well-informed movie fans would know three things about “The Day the Clown Cried,” the Jerry Lewis Holocaust movie that is the subject of this doc: It was ahead of its time, it was never finished and it probably wasn’t any good.

Coming out of “From Darkness to Light,” which premiered on Sunday at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, you’d likely know the same three things, but at least you’d have more context and more evidence that Lewis’ legendary but unseen film is indeed a bad movie. There aren’t any real revelations in the doc, just the sad and tangled story of a questionable idea being undermined by creative choices, business conflicts and a comic icon’s determination to bury something that embarrassed him.

But first, the three-time Oscar nominee met the international press in Venice on Wednesday afternoon for a wide-ranging conversation about her career and the art of cinema.

Within the first five minutes of the sit-down, Weaver was brought to tears by a female journalist’s personal thank you for her pioneering performances as strong women characters — most notably, as the heroine Ripley in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic Alien — which shifted perceptions in the industry about the kinds of parts women could play and empowered female viewers everywhere.

The Venice Film Festival is just over two weeks away, bringing starry talent back to the Lido in water taxis after a year off for many due to the strikes in 2023. As previously announced, both Weaver and Weir are receiving Golden Lion for Career Achievement awards at this year’s festival. Oscar-nominated actor Weaver is best known for her roles in the “Alien” and “Avatar” franchises, while retired director Weir has collected various accolades for his films like “Dead Poets Society,” “The Truman Show” and “Master and Commander.”

Hawke had his breakthrough performance in “Dead Poets Society,” and went on to star in Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy and “Boyhood” as well as Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed.” Also set to give a masterclass is director Pupi Avati, who helmed Venice’s closing film “L’orto Americano” and is also known for his horror films “The House With Laughing Windows” and “Zeder.”

The Venice Film Festival unveiled its lineup of master classes and conversations for 2024. Highlights include talks with triple Oscar-nominee Sigourney Weaver and Australian director Peter Weir, both of whom will receive honorary Golden Lion awards in Venice this year for lifetime achievement.

Actor-director Ethan Hawke and Italian filmmaker Pupi Avati will also give master classes at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.

Venice’s conversations series, organized in collaboration with Cartier, includes sit-downs with Richard Gere, Oscar-winning composer Nicola Piovani (Life Is Beautiful) and French director Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman).

The master classes will be held at the Match Point Arena at the Tennis Club Venezia across from the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido from Aug. 29 to Sept. 6.
