When I first saw the picture of Depp playing Tonto which producer Jerry Bruckheimer sneak-tweeted last week, I was, of course, giddy as always to see Depp, because I have been a fan for most of my life. I am one of those women who feels like they "discovered" him because they have been following his career since the original 21 Jump Street. And now, as Tonto: the make-up was fierce and the head-dress a bit odd – I mean, it is a bird – but it was still "my" Johnny Depp.

I knew when that picture, with a head-dress by a costume designer and face-paint by a make-up artist, surfaced, that there was going to be a stir – an uprising, perhaps – among the American Indian community's social networks.

If you haven't ever read Ambrose Bierce's short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," you've surely been exposed to it in one way or another. Maybe you saw a copy of it on Lost or experienced its influence on films like Donnie Darko and Jacob's Ladder. Perhaps you saw Robert Enrico's 1962 short film adaptation, which won an Oscar and a prize at Cannes before being aired on TV as an episode of The Twilight Zone (watch it free here). In September 2008, we reported that plans were underway for a new Lone Ranger movie. While that news usually might not get much attention from the regular press, curiosities were peaked when it was learned that Johnny Depp would be playing one of the lead roles.

Interestingly, Depp won't be playing the man behind the mask though, he'll be playing Tonto, the Lone Ranger's faithful companion. Depp’s grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee and he embraced his heritage in his self-directed 1997 movie The Brave.

Richards also appeared in 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." As for Depp, he also directed 1997's "The Brave" (based on the novel by Gregory McDonald), which starred Depp and Marlon Brando.

Depp will next be seen in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland." He starred in "Public Enemies" last year, and his future projects also include "The Rum Diary," "Rango" and "The Lone Ranger." He's a busy guy, for sure.

I’m curious to see if Depp’s documentary will focus on Richards’ entire life or turn its attention to some key moments in the musician’s career. I hope Depp addresses Richards’ chronic case of being unable to die.
