The movie was based on a 1993 novel of the same name by American writer Erika Holzer. The novel was adapted for the screen by screenwriters Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

Julie (Olivia Burnette) normally went to soccer practice at that time of day but skipped it so that she could help with the birthday decorations. If Doob (Kiefer Sutherland) knew Julie's schedule, he probably would not have stopped by at that time. This has led viewers to suggest that Doob (a) followed Julie home and knew that she was alone, (b) was watching her house and saw her come home and send Megan (Alexandra Kyle) and the housekeeper over to the Hunsikers, (c) took a chance that Julie would be home alone, or (d) was making a delivery, noticed that Julie was alone, and took advantage of the situation. All four are possibilities, given that the movie does not answer the question for the viewers.

He got off due to a loophole. The District Attorney (DA) first assigned to the case was transferred, so a second DA was appointed. Per the Discovery Rule, the first DA had agreed to provide the defense with 25 percent of the evidence (semen sample) for countertesting. The second DA didn't know about this and allowed the promised samples to be used for the prosecution's testing, so the defense argued that they were not allowed fair exposure to the evidence. Even though the defense was asked to participate in a mutual examination of the evidence (she declined) and the DNA test conclusively identified Doob as the killer, the judge reluctantly had to agree with the defense in the interest of justice. Since there wasn't any other evidence that could prove Doob's guilt, the judge had to dismiss the case.

It may be difficult to hear, but Julie had a slight stutter, particularly with her p's (p-p-practice), d's (d-d-decorations), and s's (s-s-streamers). Doob saying "S-s-sorry" to Karen (Sally Field) and Mack (Ed Harris) McCann was a blatant attempt to let them know that (1) he knew Julie, (2) he was responsible for her rape and murder, and (3) he felt no remorse.

Basically, the woman (Wanda Acuna) said that she didn't have any money and that her husband didn't want anyone there. When the husband (Geoffrey Rivas) arrived, he asked his wife why she let a stranger in, to which she replied "She had a card." The husband then said, "I don't care what she has."

Athough his fingerprints were all over the house, as might be expected from a delivery man, he used a condom during the rape. No sperm, no DNA.

During one of the grief sessions, Angel (Charlayne Woodard) saw Karen speaking to Sidney Hughes (Philip Baker Hall).

Viewers have pondered that question, but no answer is given in the movie. Suggestions have ranged from his mother or sister to an ex-wife, girlfriend, or even a previous victim, although most viewers consider it unlikely that he would leave a photo of one of his victims lying around to be discovered if/when the police come by with a search warrant. At any rate, viewers are mostly in agreement that the look on Karen's face when she finds the picture is supposed to convey her disgust that someone like Doob could have a life that includes the capacity to care for another human being enough that he would bother to frame her photo.

It is "Shining Road" by the Cranes. They hail from Portsmouth, England and take their name from the huge dock cranes which dominate the horizon. Although originally formed in the 1980s, they met with their greatest successes in the 1990s.

Doob breaks into Karen's house and finds her in the shower, only to see a towel hanging there. He turns around to find Karen pointing a gun at him. They fight, falling down the stairs in the process. Karen reaches the bottom first, finds her gun, and shoots five bullets into him. She calls the police. While questioning her, Detective Denillo (Joe Mantegna) lets her know that he knows what she has done. "Prove it," Karen replies. When asked by a colleague what he thinks, Denillo chalks it up to a clear case of self-defense. Mack returns home and holds Karen's hand, also knowing what she has done. In the final scene, Doob's body is removed from the house.

Eye for an Eye is often described as "vigilante justice" or movies in which someone takes the law into their own hands. Another movie featuring vigilante justice is Sem vestígios (1999) (1999), in which a mother pursues her daughter's killer. In Seduzida ao Extremo (1986) (1986) , an intended rape victim turns the tables on her would-be rapist. Entre Quatro Paredes (2001) (2001) features a man pursuing the killer of his son, and Tempo de Matar (1996) (1996) details the court trial of a man who killed his daughter's rapist. In Círculo do Medo (1962) (1962) and its 1991 remake Cabo do Medo (1991), a convicted rapist terrorizes the family of the lawyer who unsuccessfully defended him, and the lawyer seeks to stop him by whatever means it takes.
