The Soulsborne or Soulslike genre has taken over the world, not just as a niche fascination for masochistic gamers like us, but also in a way that has had a profound influence on the gaming world, reshaping our perspectives on how we perceive challenges in video games and their narratives.
Soulslike is a sub-genre of action RPGs where higher difficulty gameplay and convoluted storytelling reign supreme. The sub-genre was influenced by the director of FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki, who is known for his Dark Souls Trilogy and gothic horror game Bloodborne, following a similar pattern.
With the recent popularization of the sub-genre, a lot of Soulsborne clones have flooded the gaming market, and that is exactly why we bring you our top 3 Soulsborne clones that are actually good.

FromSoftware’s Soulslike video games are well-known for their unforgiving difficulty level. Several other studios have been closely observing FromSoftware’s steps, and one has managed to give players a much-needed feature that is missing from existing Soulslike games. Developed by Neowiz and Round8 Studio, Lies of P was released in 2023 without difficulty options, but its upcoming expansion, Overture, features different difficulty options.
The addition of this will allow more gamers to experience the games, not only fans of Soulslike games. The studio is also working on the sequel of Lies of P, but this expansion is crucial because it serves as a bridge between the two games.

Disney's first-ever feature-length animated motion picture, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," was a big gamble that helped cinema evolve as a medium. It proved that animation could be more than just short, slapstick fluff that played before the main attraction. On top of that, the film's animators used then-new technologies such as larger cels and multiplane cameras to create fine details and ethereal watercolor backgrounds, breaking new ground along the way. Be that as it may, it's the studio's second animated feature, 1940's "Pinocchio," that remains its most well-reviewed movie.
"Pinocchio" is, of course, based on Carlo Collodi's 1883 novel "The Adventures of Pinocchio," which originated as a children's magazine serial. Its story centers on the titular character (Dick Jones), a wooden puppet who is magically brought to life yet still longs to be a flesh-and-blood boy. However, he soon discovers that human life isn't easy; dangers lurk around every corner,...

Once Upon a Time puts many unique spins on classic fairy tale characters. Once Upon a Time's concept is creative: the Evil Queen casts a Dark Curse that sends fairy tale characters to Storybrooke, Maine. Snow White and Prince Charming's daughter, Emma Swan, is destined to break this curse when she is 28. Emma arrives in Storybrooke because Henry, her son, finds her. However, the Evil Queen — Regina Mills in Storybrooke — adopted Henry when Emma gave him up at birth. This immediately establishes a complex family tree in Once Upon a Time, containing many surprises, twists, and turns.
And the Evil Queen is not the only character with a new identity in the real world. Marco and Archie Hopper exist: two characters formerly known as Geppetto and Jiminy Cricket from The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Another example includes Ashley Boyd, known as the titular character from Charles Perrault's Cendrillon (Cinderella). In fact,...

Is there a perfect animated Disney movie? In our minds that reflects subjective tastes, sure. For some, it could be a classic like "One Hundred and One Dalmatians," or a more recent entry like the refreshingly poignant "Zootopia." There are multitudes to be found in between — and beyond — as the central emotions associated with a personal favorite Disney animated film are nostalgia and catharsis. However, if we are to consider a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score as a metric, 1940's "Pinocchio" is the only Disney animated movie (as opposed to live-action or hybrid entries) with a 100% on the Tomatometer.
If we look back on the history of Disney-helmed animated works, the major sources of inspiration were classic fairy tales and children's novels, the likes that birthed "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" or "The Little Mermaid." However, these adaptations were not always faithful, as some of the darker elements were reworked...

The National Film Registry is an important trove of some of the most important movies ever made, with the powerhouse studio Disney having 14 of its own films on the list. Since 1988, the National Film Registry collects and preserves important films, as selected by a public nomination, from the entire history of US cinema. However, with only 25 new entries making the list each year, the registry is set to welcome the 876th through to the 900th entry in December 2024.
With this tight restriction, there are still many more important films in terms of their historical, cultural, and overall significance that have yet to appear on the list. And with the restriction that a film must be 10 years old or more, it leaves room for contributors to nominate notable films from older periods. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey horror crossover Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble is bringing together characters like Pooh, Bambi, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan from the Twisted Childhood Universe. The movie is set to begin filming in March.
While details about the story are still a secret, the slasher film will show the monsters teaming up to face survivors from previous movies.
The franchise’s first installment, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, was met with a negative critical reception and a more mixed fan reception, though it turned a profit at the box office.
The movie’s quality was called into question, with criticisms directed at the script, acting, cinematography, and lack of humor; it also received five Golden Raspberry Awards. In response to this, Frake-Waterfield stated that he is determined to raise the standard with the future films in the franchise.

Among the upcoming movies in the Twisted Childhood Universe is Pinocchio: Unstrung, and its already better than Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey in one important and disturbing way. The horror genre has been defined by different trends in recent years, and a controversial one is horror adaptations of childrens stories and characters. The trend gained a lot of attention and force with Rhys Frake-Waterfileds Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, and though it was a critical failure, it was a box office hit, leading to a sequel and a shared universe.

Published by Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio, Lies of P is a 2023 third-person soulslike game based on the 1883 book The Adventures of Pinocchio, written by Carlo Collodi. Following a puppet protagonist named P as he traverses the plague-ridden city of Krat, Lies of P remixes a familiar story with a new flavor and tone that draws on the darker aspects of the story. As he fights against puppets who have lost all sense of control, P slowly learns who is behind the petrification epidemic and the puppet uprising, building to a memorable climax.
Lies of P was full of surprises as a soulslike game, ultimately rising above most of the genre with memorable encounters and nail-biting challenges, not to mention a healthy dose of secrets and twists to uncover. Still fairly new and only a year old, Lies of P has plans for the future, which includes not only Dlc...

In Lies of P, players must decide Sophia's ultimate fate. Sophia is a bit of a mystery. She's roughly equivalent to the Blue Fairy, who originally appeared in The Adventures of Pinocchio as Pinocchio's greatest ally and advisor. In Lies of P, she helps him level up with Ergo, revives him when he dies, and is generally a force for good. Throughout most of the plot, she doesn't seem to have ulterior motives of her own, besides a genuine desire to help Pinocchio and see him through his journey. However, as players approach the final moments of the game, they realize that Sophia is out for more.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for some of the possible endings to LIes of P.]
Pinocchio and the player both come to rely on Sophia by the time they reach the Isle of Alchemists, the game's final dungeon. But there, Pinocchio encounters a mutated Sophia, alone in a secluded room beneath a framed blue butterfly. She reveals...

While it is common to witness actors' careers gradually slip away, theres something admirable about the performers who make the conscious choice to take a step back from Hollywood at the height of their popularity. This choice shows real integrity, as the actors know in their hearts that they are ready to call it quits despite viewers' desire for more. This can be down to a child star wishing to experience a new life, longtime acting legends having nothing else to give, or performers taking a planned hiatus they enjoyed so much that it turned into a retirement.
Some of the greatest actors of all time have willingly cut their careers short and said goodbye when their popularity was at an all-time high. These decisions are nothing new in Hollywood, as everyone from icons of the silent era to 1990s child stars have felt the urge to explore life away...

Disneys 1940 animated classic Pinocchio has a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and its legacy was almost ruined six decades later. Disney continues to be a powerhouse in the world of animation, being home to a number of animated movies that are now considered classics. Disneys reign in the field of animation began in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which is also the first animated feature film produced in the United States and the first cel-animated feature movie.
The success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was key to Disney becoming what it now is, and gave a taste of the studios visual and narrative style. Disneys second animated feature film was Pinocchio, a loose adaptation of Carlo Collodis 1883 Italian childrens novel The Adventures of Pinocchio. Pinocchio: Unstrung has received a major production update. The upcoming Pinocchio: Unstrung is part of the Twisted Childhood Universe, a franchise populated with villainous versions of classic childhood characters that kicked off with 2023's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and its 2024 sequel. The 2025 movie, which loosely adapts the 1883 Carlo Collodi novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, does not have any cast, crew, or plot details officially announced at the time of writing, though filming was originally slated to begin in September 2024.

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit movies were a huge financial success, yet, despite their impact, many fans continue to wonder what the franchise would have looked like had original director Guillermo del Toro remained attached. After the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the intention was for del Toro to take the reins, ushering in a new era for Middle-earth. However, as circumstances conspired against the production, del Toro was forced to step back, leaving audiences to ponder one of the great "what-ifs" of fantasy cinema.
Del Toro's proposed involvement in The Hobbit was initially greeted with palpable excitement. Although his movies have not historically been known for the same epic scale and extravagance as Jackson's, projects like Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone demonstrated del Toro's ability to tell fantastical stories. Unfortunately, production delays forced the Mexican-born director to abandon his plans, despite extensive pre-production and design work.

Lies of P, developed by Neowiz and Round8 Studios, was released last year to critical and commercial success. The game, which hooked players with its dark, twisted take on the Pinocchio tale, ended on a cliffhanger, hinting at potential Dlc.
Now, that Dlc is turning into a reality with Neowiz actively hiring for its development. However, it seems that the Lies of P sequel might thread the open-world gameplay waters as information from the hiring post hints at it. Nevertheless, fans are not happy with this Soulslike going full-on open world.

Lies of P is a soulslike game that thrives on fantastically designed interconnected levels that have become synonyms with titles like Dark Souls. On the other hand, Elden Ring, another FromSoftware’s souls game, successfully expanded into an open-world format. Nevertheless, this one followed a traditional, linear story, which fans consumed with rave reviews.

A dark adaptation of the Italian 19th-century novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio, Lies of P repurposes a great deal of content from its source material. Perhaps most notable is the names and likenesses of many of its characters - a vast number of whom occupy the role of the game's main and mini-bosses. In spite of this, Lies of P neglects to include a few figures that are incredibly significant in the novel, some of whom would make for exceptional bosses in any future Dlc. Though not all omitted characters would suit the dark ambiance of the game, some are perfectly suited for life in the city of Krat.
As with the vast majority of action RPGs, the most significant threat that faces the protagonist of Lies of P, Pinocchio, is the game's numerous incredibly powerful bosses. Although these bosses are, for the most part, all entertaining to face and incredibly well-designed,...

Dlc for Lies of P could answer pressing questions about the game's lore, including additional lore about the background of the Puppet Frenzy. There are unanswered questions about the Terrible Dogfish's absence from the game. The identity and significance of the enigmatic character Paracelsus could be explored in Dlc.
Lies of P, like almost all Action RPG games, is filled to the brim with hidden details and unanswered questions. As Dlc has seemingly been confirmed by job listings made by the game's developer, Neowiz Games, it is possible that a number of these most pressing questions could soon be definitively answered. Though some unanswered questions are of little real importance, there are a few ambiguities, queries, and mysteries that are unaddressed in the base game, which are of incredible significance to the lore of the city of Krat and its numerous inhabitants — with any luck, Dlc will clear some things up.

Throughout Lies of P's story, Pinocchio encounters a series of bosses that must be defeated to progress the story - he will also come upon a number of bosses whose defeat is optional. Despite their status as non-mandatory opponents, many of these optional bosses are difficult to best and offer excellent rewards - primarily in the form of costumes and accessories. These rewards and the experience of battle certainly justify the time and effort involved in engaging with Lies of P's optional bosses.

In spite of not being necessary for the completion of the game, many of Lies of P's side quests are among the greatest, most entertaining, and most immersive missions in the city of Krat. While many ARPGs make their side quests almost as visible as their main quests, Lies of P takes a different approach, encouraging the player to search out these optional opportunities - consequently, many of them are incredibly easy to overlook. Although for the most part, Lies of P's side quests are all great, some are definitely better and more memorable than others.

Lies of P has established itself as a bona fide and well-designed soulslike, and developers Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio don't appear to be resting on their laurels. The game first drew excitement because of its similarities to Bloodborne, but Lies of P's brooding and violent adaption of Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio manages to establish its own identity. While the game is a robust experience all told, and New Game Plus helps add replayability, the prospect of additional Dlc is nonetheless exciting.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Lies of P.]
The base game for Lies of P has three endings, and they all seem quite finite. While there is certainly room for the narrative to take a turn in a Dlc expansion, most of the threads established throughout P's journey to stop the Puppet Frenzy reach a conclusion. The setting itself is rich, however, with Krat feeling definitively larger than just those areas explored in the game.

Lies of P features incredibly challenging boss battles that will test the skills, strategy, and willpower of even the most experienced players. The game offers numerous customization options, including costume and accessory changes, as well as the selection of various weapons and Legion Arms. With devastating attacks and lightning-fast speed, players will need impeccable timing and skill to overcome these challenging adversaries.
Like almost all Action RPG games, the ultimate enemies facing the protagonist in Lies of P are its many powerful and intimidating bosses. Although some of the game's early bosses are not challenging at all, a number of Lies of P's later boss battles are incredibly difficult — even for the most experienced of players. In spite of varying difficulty, almost all of the bosses in Lies of P are incredibly well-designed, and the vast majority of them will test Pinocchio to his very limits — both in terms of his combat prowess,...

Lies of P offers an expansive range of visually stunning and well-designed costumes for players to customize their playable character. Some are more exceptional than others. The various costumes in the game provide unique aesthetic options that can enhance the role-playing experience and immersion in the game's dark setting. Obtaining certain costumes may require players to complete specific challenges or defeat powerful bosses, adding an extra layer of difficulty and satisfaction to acquiring these visually interesting outfits.
Lies of P is a visually stunning and atmospheric game, and like many of the most immersive ARPGs, it affords the player a degree of autonomy in the presentation of their playable character. Although there is the choice of eight unique Legion Arms and a seemingly countless number of weapons, perhaps the most significant visual customization option is the ability to select one of 17 costumes. Though they all are exceptionally well-designed, some are far cooler than others.

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. Lies of P offers immersive customization options, allowing players to customize Pinocchio's appearance with costumes, Legion Arms, and accessories. The accessories in Lies of P are particularly unique and well-designed, with some standing out as cooler and more visually interesting than others. Pre-order bonuses include exclusive accessories like the Mischievous Puppet's Parade Hat and the Parade Master's Mask, adding to the game's customization options.
Lies of P is an Arpg with some incredibly immersive customization options, primarily among them the ability to customize the appearance of the protagonist, Pinocchio. These choices, although limited when compared with some other RPG games, are bountiful — with costumes, eight Legion Arms, and 11 accessories to choose from. Although the costumes and Legion Arms are limited in size and shape, there is no such restriction on accessories; as a result, the various masks and other pieces of headgear are some of the most unique customization options in Lies of P.

Lies of P features multiple endings and a "true" final boss, with choices made throughout the game shaping the outcome. The Lie System, based on the novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, allows players to tell the truth or lie, determining the ending. All endings see Pinocchio facing the final boss Simon Manus, leader of the Alchemists. The fight requires parrying his attacks and capitalizing on openings, with few special tricks. After the fight, players can ride the lift down to see the ending. The "Real Boy" ending, the default conclusion, depends on Pinocchio's decision in the final confrontation with Gepetto. If he agrees to give up his heart, they live happily as father and son. The "Free from the Puppet String" ending requires telling the truth and sparing Sophia, leading to a true final boss fight with the Nameless Puppet. The "Rise of P" ending involves lying throughout the game and killing Sophia,...

Jonathan Taylor Thomas, or Jtt as fans fondly called him, rose to fame as a child star on Home Improvement in the '90s but left the show to focus on his education. Alongside his TV roles, Thomas also pursued a career in movies and voiced key characters in The Lion King and The Adventures of Pinocchio. After taking a break from acting, Thomas returned to the screen in 2013 for Last Man Standing, and since then, he has ventured into directing and remains an active member of SAG-AFTRA.
Thanks to his role on Home Improvement, Jonathan Taylor Thomas was one of the most popular child stars of the '90s, but what happened to the actor afterward has mostly been a mystery. Thomas got his start as part of the legacy of another iconic sitcom, playing Greg's son Kevin on a short-lived revival of The Brady Bunch titled The Bradys.

The live action Pinocchio cast brings together great performers and voice actors who helped bring the Disney characters to life. Directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay he co-wrote with Chris Weitz, the live-action Pinocchio was first announced back in 2015 and is based primarily on the 1940 animated film of the same name, which takes its cues from the 19th century book The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.
Pinocchio follows a similar path as its animated predecessor. The story is about Pinocchio taking the steps to transform from a wooden puppet into a real boy after Geppetto makes a wish upon a star. The live-action Pinocchio is a combination of onscreen actors as well as a voice cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt as one of the many CGI characters throughout. Led by Tom Hanks, Pinocchio has a star-studded cast who each do their part to bring their characters to life.

The characters of Guillermo del Toro's award-winning stop-motion Pinocchio are brought to life again by Loulou Almeyda's intricately detailed bodypaint cosplays of the titular puppet and the Blue Fairy. Del Toro's passion project is a dark retelling of Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio, following the tale of a young puppet given life. Gregory Mann and Tilda Swinton provided the voices for Pinocchio and the Wood Sprite, del Toro's reimagining of the character known as the Blue Fairy in many other adaptations.

Recently, two Pinocchio movies from rival streaming services received two very different distinctions from award organizations based in L.A. "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," co-directed by Mark Gustafson and available on Netflix, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Disney's live-action "Pinocchio," directed by Robert Zemeckis and available on Disney+, won the Razzie Award for Worst Remake, Ripoff or Sequel.
The Battle of the Two Pinocchios was fought, and voters decided that del Toro did a better job of rediscovering the wooden boy's soul. You can't really argue with that, yet he and Zemeckis were both indebted to Walt Disney's original 1940 animated version of "Pinocchio" (also on Disney+), not to mention Carlo Collodi's foundational children's novel, "The Adventures of Pinocchio," first published in book form 140 years ago.
In "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," the puppet is immortal, capable of reanimating after death.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is an Oscar frontrunner for best animated feature, and if it wins, it won’t be the first time the Academy has honored the wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy. In 1941, Walt Disney’s Pinocchio became the first animated feature to win Oscars for best original score and song, for “When You Wish Upon a Star.” The 1940 film, based on children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, was the second animated feature released by Disney, after 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (which, incidentally, also earned an Oscar nomination for original score). Composers Leigh Harline and Paul J. Smith, who had written the music for Snow White with Frank Churchill, were enlisted to craft Pinocchio‘s score. Harline and lyricist Ned Washington wrote the tune “When You Wish Upon a Star,” which was immediately recognized by Disney as...

The animated film Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio”, clinched the honour for Best Animated Film at the BAFTA on Monday. The film won over fellow nominees of “Marcel The Shell With Shoes On”, “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” and “Turning Red”.

Netflix and Disney released their own versions of Pinocchio just a few months apart, and they've received drastically different Rotten Tomatoes scores. Robert Zemeckis directed the version of Pinocchio on Disney+ and Guillermo del Toro directed the Oscar-nominated Pinocchio on Netflix, and both sport a star-studded cast, so how do their review scores compare on Rotten Tomatoes?
The story of Pinocchio is based on an 1883 children's book, The Adventures of Pinocchio, written by Italian author Carlo Lorenzini. While the story has seen numerous adaptations through the years, it's likely most famous because of the 1940 Disney animated film. Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis have maintained a fascinating movie-making partnership for almost 30 years across a variety of different genres. Their first film together, Forrest Gump, won the two Best Actor and Best Director respectively at the Oscars while their latest earned them Razzie nominations in the same categories. Hanks has starred in four of Zemeckis' films to date with a fifth, entitled Here, currently in production. Examining all the movies that Hanks and Zemeckis have done together creates an insightful cross-section of the careers of two of the most influential Hollywood hit-makers to emerge out of the 1980s.
Though the majority of Zemeckis' most iconic films don't feature the actor, and Hanks' partnership with director Steven Spielberg has garnered him more consistent acclaim, the prominence that Hanks' performances have taken in his collaborations with Zemeckis has made the two a Hollywood pair worth noting. Part of that strategy is the recasting of Superman, who makes an appearance during the end credits for “Black Adam.” This...

This article contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
Guillermo del Toro still vividly recalls the first time he saw Walt Disney’s classic animated film, Pinocchio, as a child. That 1940 Disney movie, only the second feature-length effort from the company, is likely darker than most adults remember. And on more than a few occasions it even reaches toward the nightmarish imagery of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio. But del Toro remembers it all.
“I was very young and all of a sudden I saw Disney’s Pinocchio,” del Toro tells Den of Geek. “I thought this movie understands how scary childhood is for me. Somebody got it.”
Somebody did, but perhaps even then del Toro sensed he had a different temperament from the values implied by Pinocchio, both as suggested by Disney and by Collodi’s literary source material. In those versions, Pinocchio is a...

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.
Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).
Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

"Pinocchio" is the latest Disney animated film to get an updated "live-action" remake in our contemporary times. The 1940 original is rightfully a classic — a film that pushed the boundary of what animation can bring to the screen and a story about a boy's earnest search to find out who he is. Robert Zemeckis' remake, however, fails to capture the heart of the original. It's poorly paced, full of actors talking in multiple variants of accented English that make Dick Van Dyke's Cockney accent seem good in comparison, and delivers major characters who are stilted, disjointed, and lacking life.
The story of Zemeckis' "Pinocchio" largely follows that of the original film, inspired by "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. An old woodworker named Geppetto wishes on a star for Pinocchio, a wooden puppet he made, to become a real boy. Geppetto gets his wish, although Pinocchio remains made of...
