‘Mantis Burn Racing’ Review (Nintendo Switch)
When I first heard about Mantis Burn Racing and saw it was a top-down racer my thoughts went back to the old racers, like Super Off Road, Pole Position, et al. many of which had a fixed camera, and how much I disliked that style. Thankfully while that is one camera option for this game, it turned out I was going to be pleasantly surprised.

With Mantis Burn Racing the camera can be set to follow your car, which in itself can also be an odd experience but one that is much more playable. The reason I say odd is because Mantis Burn Racing has a focus on drifting and finding the best line to take some pretty extreme corners. This can lead to the camera veering wildly in all directions and if you lack concentration it can be quite dizzying.

Find the right level of concentration though, where you...

Namco Museum Review: Another Go Around
If there’s one company that knows how to make money out of their franchises, it’s Bandai Namco. They’ve ensured that there hasn’t been a mainstream system launched that doesn’t have at least one version of Pac-Man, Galaga, and Dig-Dug available for it since the wildly popular 1995 release of Namco Museum Volume 1 for the original PlayStation. Outside of those Museum collections, they’ve also released a few of their classics individually via various digital stores, or for your smartphone. If the originals don’t float your boat, there are Dx versions, remixes, remakes and Championship Editions to blow your money on. Like I say, they know how to make money out of their franchises.

The compilations are usually somewhat lightweight in terms of the number of games that are included though and sadly, this Nintendo Switch version is no different. 11 games make up Namco Museum for Switch.

‘Cars 3’ Drives Into Pole Position, ‘Rough Night’ Flops [Box Office]
There are few guarantees at the box office, but the “Cars” franchise has always been a solid performer, and once again it has started off strong. However, a closer look at the numbers reveals that Pixar‘s lucrative franchise may be losing some gas.

Debuting with $53 million, “Cars 3” took in the kind of money any studio would be happy to have, however, it’s not only the lowest starting figure for any movie in the series to date, it’s also Pixar’s second lowest summer opening behind “Ratatouille.” Still, “Cars 2” earned $562 million worldwide after debuting with $66 million, so you can probably expect this threequel to do just a bit less than that when all is said and done.

In memoriam: Namco founder Masaya Nakamura
Ryan Lambie Jan 30, 2017

Masaya Nakamura, founder of Namco, the company behind Pac-Man and other classic games, has sadly passed away.

The golden age of arcades wouldn't have been the same without Namco. The Japanese firm was responsible for the classic Pac-Man and a legion other hit games of the 70s and 80s, including Galaxian, Pole Position and Galaga.

We're sad to report that Masaya Nakamura, the founder of Namco, passed away on the 22nd January - news of which was only made public by the company today.

Nakamura founded Namco - under the name Nakamura Manufacturing - in 1955, and specialised in making amusement park rides and simple arcade games. It was in the surge of popularity of arcade machines, led by such games as Pong, Breakout and Space Invaders, that Namco made a global name for itself. Galaxian, released in 1979, was the company's answer to Taito's Space Invaders, and a...

The '80s Live! Play Free Games at the 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Retro X: Arcade
Ah, the 1980s! The decade saw the rise of blockbuster movies aimed at the widest audience possible, concurrent with the rise of video games as a serious competitor in the entertainment business. As it happens, the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse is set during the 1980s, revolving around the return of the so-called first mutant, known as Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). He decides that the decade is not to his liking, so he decides to change things dramatically. While awaiting the arrival of the movie later this month, why not spend some time playing video games? The era was rich with great games like Pac-Man, Centipede, Q*bert, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Frogger, Pole Position, Tetris, Defender and more. Compared to today's games, the graphics are primitive, but if you...

Games nobody talks about anymore: Rolling Thunder
It was an incredibly tough scrolling shooter with a cool 60s spy theme. Ryan takes a look back at Namco's Rolling Thunder...

Whether you were in Indianapolis or Ingoldmells, you were pretty much guaranteed to see a game by Namco in any 1980s arcade. Increasingly tired-looking Galaxian, Galaga and Pole Position machines were still kicking around at the end of the decade, while Pac-Man remains one of the most famous names in gaming even today. But there was one great Namco game that didn't quite have the same lasting impact as the iconic Pac-Man, or even its once-popular space shooting games, yet managed to exert a quiet influence both on the company's later games and the industry as a whole.

Rolling Thunder appeared towards the end of 1986, and its design was completely different from anything else in arcades at the time. Where most coin-ops had a science fiction theme -...

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in Castle (2009)
Castle Recap: Not Seeing Is Believing
Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in Castle (2009)
This week on ABC’s Castle, Kate and Rick dealt with a clear and present danger, when an “invisible man” seemingly killed a random pool hustler. But all was not as it… appeared.

So we’ve moved on — mostly, save for a light-hearted reference here and there — from Rick’s Great Amnesic Mystery, and it feels good. I’m certain they’ll circle back to it at some point(s), just as the Johanna Beckett Mythology popped up now and again. But short of doling out meaningful answers, which they are in no rush to do, it’s best if...

Wimbledon: Djokovic In Pole Position For Second Triumph
If Novak Djokovic had compiled the draw for this year’s Wimbledon himself, he couldn’t have come up with a kinder one. The three men who could realistically derail the best player on the planet are all in the other half of the draw.

Since Lleyton Hewitt’s win in 2002 Wimbledon has been won seven times by Federer, twice by Nadal and and two years ago by Djokovic himself. No one else has had a look-in. Following his Olympic Gold at Wimbledon, the Us Open triumph last year and his current ranking of number 2 in the world, Andy Murray has a legitimate claim to be considered a contender for the title. But outside these four, forget it. To win a slam you have to beat not just one but at least two of the four big beasts in the tennis jungle over five sets and the fact that del...

Codemasters' racing history, from BMX Simulator to Grid 2
Feature Ryan Lambie 6 Jun 2013 - 07:00

With GRID2 out now, we chart the development of Codemasters' racing heritage, from BMX Simulator to the present...

Last April, Codemasters announced that it was to abandon other genres in order to focus exclusively on racing games. For those with fond memories of Codemasters' long history, which included budget action adventures like the Dizzy series, quirky management games like Rock Star Ate My Hamster, or maybe the Brian Lara Cricket series, it might have seemed like the end of an era. Yet since its very earliest days, racing games have formed a key part of the British publisher and developer.

From an early age, siblings Richard and David Darling had an interest in computers, and were selling their own games via classified ads in magazines by the early 1980s. Before they founded Codemasters, they were selling games to the UK publisher Mastertronic; the Darlings'...

Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham In Pole Position To Sign Leandro Damiao
Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to sign Internacional striker Leandro Damiao this summer, according to the club’s president.

Along with Spurs, Serie A giants Napoli have also been heavily linked with the Brazilian as part of their efforts to replace Edinson Cavani, who looks set to move to the Premier League in the summer transfer window.

However, club president Giovanni Luigi has revealed it is Tottenham who are favourites for the player’s signature, while also appearing to slam Napoli for allegedly speaking directly with Damiao’s agent without first consulting the Brazilian giants.

Spurs have long been interested in the attacker, and came very close to signing him back in January when they made a dramatic deadline day offer of £13 million, which was then rejected by Internacional.

But they might have better look this time, according to Luigi.

“If a club want a player, they must talk...

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 3, Episode 3 Review – Pole Position
As the show’s title suggests, the core storyline to Game of Thrones has a certain Milton Bradley-esque quality to it, wherein the various players are all jockeying for position and designation on an enormous scale. And as is typically the point of playing such a game, the fortunes and futures of all those involved are sometimes decided by a player’s skill – or something far more arbitrary.

The idea of positioning pieces on and around a board isn’t anything new to the series – it’s been going on since the first time the credits rolled – but such allusions have never been so blatant (nor blatantly amusing) as they are early on in ‘Walk of Punishment’ where positions are handed down, haggled for or simply snatched up in ...

The 10 best Atari games
Pole Position (1984)
With the reported news of Atari’s bankruptcy filing, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite Atari games.

1. Pong (1977):

The first game ever developed by Atari Inc., Pong was one of the most influential video games ever created and the first to gain widespread mainstream popularity. A 2D take on table tennis, Pong has two players controlling paddles and trying to knock the ball into the opponent’s screen. That’s it. Endlessly cloned and available for virtually every system (and graphing calculator) known to man, Pong is about as simple–and utterly addictive–as it gets.

GTA V: 25 Radio Stations That Should Be Included
One of the biggest overlooked pieces of information dropped by last week’s blowout was that for the first time ever, Grand Theft Auto will be getting its own original musical score. Historically, Rockstar Games have an exemplary record when it comes to implementing music into their games: whether it’s Shawn Lee’s expert percussion work from Bully or Bill Elm & Woody Jackson’s marvellous atmospheric composition for Red Dead Redemption, they know how to hit the right notes. And this is never more palpable than when it comes to their iconic radio stations.

Beyond the gameplay, the graphics and the missions, the heart of a Grand Theft Auto game lies with its radio stations. As they have shown time and time again, Rockstar are a developer who understand the importance of a video game soundtrack: much of the ambience and memories created are by virtue of the presence of its music.

Lewis Hamilton on Pole – Hungary Gp 2012
Lewis Hamilton produced a qualifying masterclass in Hungary, with the Lotus’ hot on his heels. The McLaren driver put in hot lap after hot lap beating his own times on his way to Pole position closest to him was Romain Grosjean of Lotus 4 tenths off but showing for once the true pedigree in those cars. Sebastian Vettel popped himself into 3rd but bailed on his final lap after running through one of the gravel traps.

Jenson Button was still unhappy with the handling of his McLaren but managed to get to 4th on the grid while fighting understeer. Raikkonen disappointed slightly in his Lotus but will still be able to fight for the podium from his starting position of 5th. The Ferrari’s of Alonso and Massa will line up together starting in 6th and 7th respectively, a damage limitation it seemed after not looking quick this weekend.

Formula 1: Fernando Alonso on Pole in German Gp
Fernando Alonso once again enjoyed his day in the rain, mastering Hockenheim and taking pole by nearly half a second. Red Bull tried to challenge but Alonso not only held them off with his lap, he set the final lap of the day and beat his own time leaving a large gap with the conditions.

Vettel and Webber line up 2nd and 3rd respectively with good laps considering the weather conditions, a lot of drivers venturing into gravel traps and run off areas. Michael Schumacher followed them with an impressive showing considering his team mate couldn’t even get out of Q2 in the Mercedes.

The McLarens struggled to get their tyres working in the wet conditions, Button and Hamilton starting 7th and 8th but they may be set up for a dry race so should be Ok for tomorrow. Force India looked very strong considering they are a mid-pack team,...

Looking back at D.A.R.Y.L.
A military cyborg boy goes on the run in the 80s family sci-fi, D.A.R.Y.L. Ryan takes a look back at a decent movie with a misleading poster...

Ah, D.A.R.Y.L. One of the less commonly discussed family movies of the 80s, but one firmly lodged in my mind, largely because of its poster and subsequent videotape cover. Depicting a small boy at the helm of an Sr-71 Blackbird (inarguably the coolest aircraft ever designed), it immediately captured my youthful imagination.

Imagine my disappointment, then, when I discovered that D.A.R.Y.L. is not an all-action adventure about a kid hurtling about in a stolen aircraft, but a fairly low-key drama about a cyborg child slowly integrating into normal family life. The aircraft theft only occurs in the final reel, and is mere minutes long - if you thought the aerial action in Firefox came along disappointingly late in the show, as I did,...

Top 10: Driving Video Games
Inspired by something I said in my review of Driver San Francisco, I thought I’d take a look back through video game history – all the way back to the days of the Atari 2600 – to bring you my Top 10 favourite driving games of all time. From Pole Position to the aforementioned latest entry in the Driver franchise – if it’s not on this list then I’m not playing it!

Oh, and by the way, these are in release date order, Not in order of preference…

Pole Position (Atari 2600)

Released in 1982, Pole Position was published by Namco in Japan and by Atari, Inc. in the United States. The game popularized the use of sprite-based, pseudo-3D graphics with its “rear-view racer format”—where the player’s view is behind and above the vehicle, looking forward along the road with the horizon in sight—which would remain in use even after...

Video Game Review: ‘Shift 2 Unleashed’ For Hardcore Drivers Only
Chicago – Having played racing games since the days when I would go to the arcade and drop quarters into a “Pole Position” game, I’m at the point where I’m somewhat exhausted by the genre. There’s some variety in style, but racing games aren’t really that different from one another, especially ones that take the art of driving as seriously as “Shift 2 Unleashed.” This is a good game from the “Need For Speed” team that still feels like it doesn’t add enough new to a genre that could use an overhaul.

Video Game Rating: 3.5/5.0

Don’t get me wrong. “Shift 2 Unleashed” doesn’t do anything particularly poorly. But you should be warned that it’s a game for hardcore driving fans. You have to love cars enough to notice the difference in handling between not just this game and less refined ones but between cars. You...

Games: Game Review: Shift 2: Unleashed
The second installment in the Shift franchise again tries to position itself as the Switzerland of racing games. Neither a hardcore simulation nor a full-blown casual experience, Shift 2: Unleashed is designed to appeal to the spectrum-spanning fan bases of both Gran Turismo and Burnout. Instead of floating above vehicles like guardian angels, as gamers have done in every racing game since 1982’s Pole Position, Shift and the new Shift 2 plant you squarely behind the virtual wheel, for better or worse. Playing the game from this limited perspective can feel like a pointless handicap, akin to doing your ...

Oscar nominees do lunch
Academy award hopefuls convene in Beverly Hills hotel to eat, drink, slap backs and discuss who's best-placed to win this year

The annual Oscar nominees' lunch provides a vital opportunity for award hopefuls to meet, greet and subtly scout the competition. Inside a Beverly Hills hotel, the 151 attendees gather for food, booze and photographs. Each has officially come to tell their neighbour how wonderful they are, and what an honour it is to be nominated alongside them, and how anything else would be a bonus and probably won't happen anyway, what with their neighbour being so much better.

At the same time these beaming, glad-handing killers are jockeying gently for an advantage, drawn towards the oversized Oscar statue like metal shavings to a magnet.

For some, sad to say, this is the closest they will come to the prize they desire above all else.

All Your ‘Missile Command’ Are Belong To Fox
This post would have made its way to completion a lot sooner, but playing the game Missile Command seemed more fun and interesting than writing about a Missile Command movie. Fortunately, you can play Missile Command online for free, but at least skim over the next few words so that you’re in the know about Fox and their plans to take a video game about protecting a base from being hit with exploding things and turning it into a feature film with actual actors and a director and all that. Atari has been shopping around the project for about a year, and it looks like Fox is eager to get things off the launching pad, because they’ve already got writers in place. Both Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama are newcomers, but they’ve written scripts for Dracula: Year Zero and Flash Gordon, and have perhaps the two coolest names that writers have ever owned. Except...

Tron: Legacy Reviews
Tron: Legacy has had sci-fi fans buzzing for months. Is it a full-on nerdgasm or unfortunate sequel (with killer Daft Punk soundtrack)?

"...an eye-candyriffic holiday treat, with a killer soundtrack and 3-D visuals worthy of the huge screen."

— Luke Y. Thompson, E! Online

"...a 3-D sound-and light show that plays to the eyes and ears more than the mind."

— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"...Tron: Legacy, unlike its predecessor, really does make novelty look cool. It's a sleeker, sharper, far more visually intoxicating machine dream of a movie, with a darkly liquid electronic texture all its own."

— Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"...lives up to its predecessor on both the visual and screenplay levels — which is to say, it looks incredible and feels increasingly leaden and cumbersome as the story unfolds."

— Jason McKiernan, filmcritic.com

"It's a sullen affair, dominated by a grim visual palette that intrigues for about 30 minutes. Thereafter I...

Watch This: Stop-Motion 'Pac-Man' with Humans
Pole Position (1984)
Guillaume Reymond, the guy who gave us the human Tetris performance, is back with his latest live action videogame art project -- this time tackling Namco's classic Pac-Man. Created using a stop-motion camera technique, this is the French-Swiss artist's fifth creation for the Game Over Project.

Reymond shot the footage over 4 hours with 111 human "pixels" who make up Pac-Man, the board, and the ghosts who chase him down. Seeing it in motion is really neat -- particularly if you love stop-motion and low-fi video. The short was shot and played for the new ProHelvetia's programme GameCulture at the Trafo cinema (Baden, Switzerland) on August 28th 2010.

The artist's previous game videos include Tetris, Space Invaders, Pole Position, and the game that started it all, Pong. You can see all of these and more of his work at the NotSoNoisy website. Hit the jump to watch Pac-Man in people form and let us know what you think.

Fred Plays Blur on PS3
As video games go, driving games are fairly easy for me to keep up with at this stage in life. Even the ones with open maps and lots of objectives, I can still just pick up and play a little and put it down. Blur keeps it really simple, the basics of things I remember from the Nes days with a few next gen flashes.

Console Review: Blur PS3

The races are pretty basic. Accelerate, stay ahead and get some power ups to gain and keep your position. This really goes back to the Pole Position days. Every driving game has that thing where you always start out behind and have to overtake opponents one by one. Then no matter how safe you think you are, they come from behind. Blur does that like the best of them.

Going Rogue in the New Jaguar Xj
The new Jaguar Xj is shaped like a sleek, blunt-nosed, .50 caliber bullet. It also looks undeniably like a rather large penis—especially when slathered in this sanguine-engorged Caviar Metallic—which, in my opinion, is not a bad thing. What it does not look like is the outgoing Jaguar Xj, which looked pretty much the same as it had since King John nearly had his repo-ed by the Magna Carta in 1215. Some people in the automotive world find bold changes to iconic vehicles like this to be blasphemous, akin to giving the Statue of Liberty a glow-stick, an iPad, and Gaga hair. But while I appreciate some time-honored traditions—summer break, afternoon delight, happy hour—I’m hardly a traditionalist. So when the folks from Jaguar invited me to their maverick Xj launch in La, I leapt at the opportunity like a big carnivorous cat. Mission Control for the 25 journalists attending...

'MotoGP 09/10' Review - The Need For More Speed
Review by Jonathan Goldner

I've been playing racing games since as far back as "'Pole Position" and "Out Run," and my tactic of choice is always the same: mash down the gas and let the rest sort itself out. In some games, this will actually work. But in others, like Capcom's new "MotoGP 09/10," my brute force approach just doesn't hold any gasoline. After all, the MotoGP series is all about making the most accurate motorcycle racing sim.

The Basics

You're an international grand prix motorcycle racer. Choose your nationality, name and colors, then hit the road. If there was a storyline beyond that, I missed it. The game format is fairly standard with practice, qualifying and race modes on each of 17 real-world race tracks. Successes on the asphalt translate into a reputation rating that subsequently unlocks more features & options.

The Highs

Follow That Line!

Perhaps in a nod to gas-mashers like me,...

Bachelor's Rozlyn Papa Sex Tape Is Vintage Porn
Pole Position (1984)
Update: Mystery solved! A lawyer for Rozlyn Papa has ID'd the clip purporting to be a sex tape of his client. According to a statement from Roderick J. Lindblom, "a cursory internet search reveals that the clip appears to be from a 2004 porn movie titled Pole Position: Lex Pov, directed by Lexington Steele." ________ While Rozlyn Papa may have been Jake Pavelka's most controversial potential paramour, she's not a porn star. A 15-second dirty video that went live on (Nsfw site!) Pornhub.com today may look like her, but the blond woman shown "is clearly not her," her rep, Stacie Vanchieri, tells E! News exclusively. "I've seen the tape," she continues....
