Clark Gable and Joan Crawford in Almas Rebeldes (1940)

The 18 Best Joan Crawford Movies, Ranked
Image
Few names in Hollywood's illustrious history get people talking quite like Joan Crawford. The legendary actress began her career in silent films before transitioning to sound, and worked for decades, appearing in more than 80 films and television shows. However, the images conjured up of Crawford these days are rarely of her -- instead, they're of Faye Dunaway, who played a diabolical and utterly maniacal version of the actress in "Mommie Dearest," That 1981 film -- based on a shocking book from Crawford's daughter Christina -- changed Crawford's reputation forever and all-too-often erases her stature as one of cinemas greatest stars.

That is nothing short of a tragedy. Few actors could match Crawford's talent, determination, and tenacity. Indeed, even after she retired and then passed away in 1977, very few have matched her prodigious abilities. It can be difficult to look past her domineering facade (especially in a post-"Mommie Dearest" world), but...

Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart To Catch Up With Og YouTubers In Limited Podcast ‘How Ya Been?’
Image
WarnerMedia-owned digital gaming and lifestyle brand Rooster Teeth has announced several new projects today, including a brand new podcast slate for its in-house studio, The Roost, as well as the dates for its second virtual Rtx convention, which will be held from July 8 to 17.

Joining The Roost’s existing podcast lineup -- which includes a just-added audio iteration of Anthony Padilla’s I Spent A Day With YouTube series -- are: Annual Pass, in which Rooster Teeth's Geoff Ramsey and Jack Pattillo scope out the latest theme park news; The Real Canon, covering all things nerd entertainment; and fictional comedy No Dumb Answers, which spoofs the podcasting genre itself. The Roost will facilitate distribution and ad sales for each of its new shows. The division says it quadrupled revenues and saw a 20% increase in listeners in 2020.

Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart will also host a new comedic outing at...

The Mortal Storm
Image
It’s pretty scary to think that as late as 1940 both Washington and the American public were sharply divided over Nazi Germany. Poland had been overrun and France was about to fall, but MGM waited until June of that year to release this softened adaptation of a novel written as a warning to the world in 1937. Handsomely produced with MGM’s high-gloss production values, it’s remembered as a valiant and courageous anti-Nazi film. Its all-star cast reunited the potent romantic team of James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan for sentimental fireworks.

Suddenly
Political terror scenarios were a bit simpler in the 1950s, and movies about them fairly rare. Frank Sinatra gives a strong performance as the villain John Baron, in a tense tale of presidential assassination by high-powered rifle. Some disc companies do well by refurbishing movies in the Public Domain, using various methods to bring what were once bargain-bin eyesores nearer the level of releases made from prime source material in studio vaults. As I've reported with efforts by HD Cinema Classics and Vci, the results vary dramatically -- did the company do a professional job,...

MGM's Lioness, the Epitome of Hollywood Superstardom, Has Her Day on TCM
Joan Crawford Movie Star Joan Crawford movies on TCM: Underrated actress, top star in several of her greatest roles If there was ever a professional who was utterly, completely, wholeheartedly dedicated to her work, Joan Crawford was it. Ambitious, driven, talented, smart, obsessive, calculating, she had whatever it took – and more – to reach the top and stay there. Nearly four decades after her death, Crawford, the star to end all stars, remains one of the iconic performers of the 20th century. Deservedly so, once you choose to bypass the Mommie Dearest inanity and focus on her film work. From the get-go, she was a capable actress; look for the hard-to-find silents The Understanding Heart (1927) and The Taxi Dancer (1927), and check her out in the more easily accessible The Unknown (1927) and Our Dancing Daughters (1928). By the early '30s, Joan Crawford had become a first-rate film actress, far more naturalistic than...

With love well and truly in the air recently with Prince William tying the knot with the rather lovely Kate Middleton a few days ago, it seems an appropriate time to take a look at some of the most legendary on/off screen couples that have fascinated us film lovers over the years. Chemistry sparks when a real romance lies behind the scenes and when a new relationship begins the tabloids go crazy!

So to celebrate the union of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge – and to appease my wife’s (yes, we just beat the Royals by getting married on 24th April!) constant requests to chronicle the following – here are the top ten on/off screen lovers the past century has immortalised…

10. Kim Basinger & Alec Baldwin

Back in the early 90s, Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin were one of the more popular on and off screen couples in Hollywood. Meeting...

Gone With The Wind vs. Melody Ranch: The Unreliability of Box Office Polls
Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind Sandra Bullock: Top Box Office Star Gone with the Wind opened in late December 1939. Boom Town became one of the biggest hits of 1940. Both movies starred Clark Gable, who kept himself quite busy by also starring in Comrade X and Strange Cargo. The biggest box-office star of 1940, according to Quigley’s exhibitors’ poll? Mickey Rooney. Sure, Rooney’s vehicles were box-office, but they weren’t Gable-caliber box-office. But stuff like Strike Up the Band and Andy Hardy Meets Debutante did well in small towns, where owners of little movie houses were happy to book flicks showing Mickey dating Judy — or Gene Autry (right) hanging out with his horse. Autry starred in [...]...
