Mabel Poulton has a busy night. First she rescues West End star Margit Manstad , who was slumming in the East End, from the hands of local bad man Clifford McLaglen. Miss Manstad gives her a card and asks her to call on her the next day. Then she finds Jack Trevor on the street, being attacked by a dog. After she tells the local bobby he's her drink-fuddled husband, she takes him home. She doesn't know that Trevor was quarreling with a local millionaire, got into a fight with him, and thinks he has killed the man. That's the unsolved murder the newsboys are crying the next day. After Miss Poulton gets into Miss Manstad's theater, she shows up the comic, and winds up with a contract. She turns up the following day with a song written by Trevor; although he has fallen on hard times, he used to be a successful songwriter. For Miss Manstad, as it turns out, who's very happy to find him.
This late silent movie directed by Hans Steinhoff from a novel by Anthony Carlyle has an easily deducible plot. It also has scenes shot in London's Docklands and a perky performance by Mabel Poulton. She was in the running for most popular British movie star at this point, as can be understood by looking at her. However, her first sound film revealed a Cockney accent that did not appeal. She was off the screen by 1931, although she returned in supporting roles in 1936, and could be spotted occasionally on the little screen into the 1960s. She died in 1994 at the age of 93.
