Fremantle is readying to unleash ‘Sandokan’ onto industry insiders during next week’s London TV Screenings.

“It’s simply a great epic adventure, based on a known IP. It’s ‘Poldark’ meets ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’,” enthuses CEO Commercial and International Jens Richter, promising action, adventure and some good old-fashioned pirating.

Starring Can Yaman (“Daydreamer”), Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”) and John Hannah (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), it’s based on the series of novels by Emilio Salgari and produced by Fremantle’s Italian content powerhouse Lux Vide. Set in the mid-1800s, it heads to a place inhabited by native Dayak tribes yet dominated by British law. Sandokan is used to fighting for his survival, but one thing catches him by surprise: love.

“There’s a portion of romance,” admits Richter. With each episode set in a different environment, “Sandokan” will “fit the needs of the market perfectly,” he adds.

With appearances by Bobby Deol (Aashram 3), Suniel Shetty & Jackie Shroff (Hunter 2), Remo D’Souza & Malaika Arora (Hip Hop India 2), Ashneer Grover (Rise and Fall) and more, Amazon Mx Player showcased its remarkable slate of over 100 new shows for 2025 at the first edition of Amazon Mx Player’s – StreamNext event.

Turkish megastar Can Yaman is set to attend the upcoming Mipcom TV market in Cannes to promote English-language drama “El Turco,” in which he plays a legendary historical figure that bridges Turkey with the Western world.

The groundbreaking six-episode “El Turco” series — featuring a starry cast of actors from nine different countries and combining history, action-adventure and romance — will be unveiled in Cannes by Turkish distributor Madd Entertainment, which is planning for the show to get a global release in February 2025.

In “El Turco,” which is produced by Turkey’s Ay Yapim, Yaman plays 17th Ottoman soldier Hasan Balaban, who was wounded during the Turkish army’s campaign to conquer Vienna in 1683 and ended up some 200 kilometers away in the Italian Alpine village of Moena. Nicknamed “El Turco” by the villagers, he led the locals to a clamorous revolt against unfair taxes that made him a local hero.

Turkish TV dramas continue to make inroads around the world, primarily in linear and pay-tv slots congenial to these sophisticated soaps, which are generally sold in packages of 100 commercial hours per show. But bolder new titles in six-10 episode formats are increasingly being made for streaming platform play.

“The market is hot: we are producing like crazy despite the pandemic,” says Ahmet Ziyalar, chief of Istanbul-based sales and production company Inter Medya, who notes “it’s really hard to find available talents.”

Prices for Turkish product dropped some in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, he points out, “because traditional broadcasters lost their advertising revenues.”

But ad intake is now starting to pick up. “We are signing more contracts,” says Ziyalar, who adds that due to lower prices “his revenues are the same” as before the coronavirus crisis.

Production of Turkish TV dramas has resumed at a steady pace undeterred by coronavirus concerns and, though the hand of censorship is being felt, shows are getting edgier.

While the pandemic forced production to grind to a halt in March, by September almost all producers had started shooting again in Turkey, though “roughly 80% of them have run into some problems with Covid-19 on their teams,” says Ahmet Ziyalar, president and COO of sales and production company Inter Medya.

Inter Medya is close to wrapping the shoot of “Respect” (“Saygi”) a series it is making for Turkish streaming platform BluTV in which the protagonist, played by Nejat Işler (“Winter Sleep”), “is a sociopath obsessed with the idea of respect,” according to the synopsis.

Ziyalar says increasingly Turkish dramas are being made for streamers, which means episodes are getting shorter — 50 minutes, whereas for linear TV the local norm is 90 minutes or more...
