Lionsgate is going hard with its John Wick franchise at CinemaCon 2025 by announcing several projects, including John Wick 5, an animated prequel, and a confirmation for the Donnie Yen-directed spinoff featuring his blind assassin character, Caine. Before you ask, yes, Keanu Reeves returns for John Wick 5, with Chad Stahelski directing and producing alongside Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
Donnie Yen spoke to Collider‘s Steve Weintraub in January about possibly directing the Caine spinoff, saying, “I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we’ll see,” Yen told Weintraub. “I don’t know, Steve. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We’ll see what happens.”
“But at the same time, I hold responsibility as well as a pressure that I don’t want to ruin the franchise,” Yen added.

Donnie Yen is returning to the world of “John Wick,” this time with some additional responsibilities.
The martial arts legend will star as Caine, the blind assassin from “John Wick: Chapter 4,” in a new spinoff film for Lionsgate. Yen will also direct the movie, which will begin production in Hong Kong later this year. The announcement was made as part of Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation.
Like all other installments in the ever-growing “John Wick” franchise, the Caine movie will be produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee through their Thunder Road banner and by series director Chad Stahelski, who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production company. Yen will also serve as an executive producer.
The movie’s logline is being kept under wraps, probably in a locked drawer at the Continental.
Mattson Tomlin has also joined the project to write the film; a previous draft was written by Robert Askins.

The studio also said that Mattson Tomlin, writer of the upcoming The Batman Part II and Netflix’s adaptation of the Keanu Reeves-created comic book Brzrkr, has joined to write the project. The previous draft of the screenplay for the spinoff was written by Robert Askins.

After years of speculation about the franchise’s future, John Wick: Chapter 5 is officially moving forward at Lionsgate. Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski are both back for the feature, following the previous installment, which ended with the death of the titular assassin.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson announced at CinemaCon on Tuesday that the studio is in development for a fifth installment in the action film franchise. Lionsgate is developing the movie with Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, franchise director and producer Stahelski and producer-star Reeves.
“Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” Fogelson said about the franchise that has collected more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”

Lionsgate held its official panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this morning, finally delivering the announcement that fans have been waiting for. After confirming weeks ago that John Wick 5 was in development, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson revealed that Keanu Reeves will return and reprise his role as the Baba Yaga in the film, with veteran director Chad Stahelski set to helm the fifth installment. Lionsgate is also reuniting with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who will produce the film alongside Reeves and Stahelski. Plot details and additional casting are being kept under wraps, and the studio declined to give a potential release date. Early development on John Wick 5 is officially underway, and a filming start date has not been set.
Since John Wick: Chapter 4 was released in theaters during the summer of 2023, the road to development for John Wick 5 has been a roller coaster.

Over four films, the titular assassin in the John Wick universe has traveled around the world, leaving the United States behind and globe-trotting to foreign destinations like Japan, Germany, and France. But soon, he’ll go on his biggest journey yet as he departs from live-action and throws himself full steam ahead into an animated journey. Today, during Lionsgate’s presentation at CinemaCon, Adam Fogelson, chair of the studio’s Motion Picture Group, addressed the packed-out Colosseum in Caesars Palace and delivered the tremendous news, revealing that a John Wick animated prequel film was on the way. There are a lot of upsides to the beloved gun-fu franchise going down the animated road for a prequel project, with a major one being that Keanu Reeves will be able to voice the assassin — which he’s expected to do.

John Wick lives…for real. After just announcing that Lionsgate would return to the world of John Wick with an animated prequel film, the studio is in development on a fifth John Wick movie — “Chapter 5” —with Keanu Reeves again set to return to the billion-dollar franchise.
Lionsgate is currently in development of the film, with Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, franchise director and producer Chad Stahelski, and star and producer Reeves.

John Wick isn’t dead. He’s so not dead that Lionsgate is literally exploiting the franchise at full tilt with an animated version, a Donnie Yen directed Caine character spinoff and yes, of course, a John Wick: Chapter 5 with Keanu Reeves returning to star, franchise filmmaker Chad Stahelski back to direct and produce and Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee also returning to produce.
All of this went down at Lionsgate’s beefy CinemaCon presentation this morning at Caesars Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas.
The most recent film in the franchise, John Wick: Chapter 4, took in over $440 million at the worldwide box office, with each of the first four films accomplishing the rare feat of outperforming its predecessor. It’s the end of Sundance as we know it and Hollywood feels … fine.
The indie film festival, created by Robert Redford in the 1970s but facing a crossroads in recent years with low sales and few breakout hits, is moving to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027.
Boulder, which rests about 30 miles north of Denver, beat out a Salt Lake City/Park City hybrid and Cincinnati, Ohio, in the final round of bidding. All of the industry insiders who spoke to TheWrap said the choice was solid, the change welcome and the move absolutely necessary for the long-running festival.
“It’s kind of sad not to go to a Sundance in Park City, but I am also kind of excited about the possibilities and maybe improvements in a different location,” Carla Gutierrez, a filmmaker and editor who’s been going to Sundance since 2004 and most recently attended with her documentary “Frida” in 2024, told TheWrap.

Exclusive: Badlands, the new indie genre label of longtime Sony exec Strauss and Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee’s Thunder Road, has preemptively acquired Hivemind, a new spec script from Peter Gaffney.
Hivemind is billed as an environmental thriller about the evolution of a new breed of killer wasps and the small town authorities who team up to prevent a deadly global outbreak. Gaffney, Adam Rodin and Brad Luff will serve as producers.
The acquisition is the second for Badlands in recent weeks on the heels of Lions, Tigers, and Bears, a creature feature that came in as a pitch from screenwriter Jayson Rothwell. “We went into production six months after acquiring Arachnid,” Strauss told Deadline.

Adeline Rudolph (Mortal Kombat 2) and Arden Cho (Partner Track, Avatar: The Last Airbender) have been cast as the leads in Perfect Girl, a psychological thriller from director Hong Won-ki and Badlands, the genre label set up last year by John Wick producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee’s Thunder Road and longtime Screen Gems executive Scott Strauss.
Based on the 2023 Black List script Unnie by Lynn Q. Yu, Perfect Girl is set in the high-stakes world of K-pop. Described as Scream meets Black Swan, the story follows a group of trainees competing for four coveted spots in a new supergroup. When a talented and mysterious new girl is introduced to the casting competition at the last minute, things start to get strange: Girls are being hunted and attacked one by one.
Upgrade will launch Perfect Girl to international buyers at the European Film Market next month. CAA Media Finance is handling domestic rights.

In his autobiography "Born To Run," Bruce Springsteen wrote how when he was first struggling as a musician, songwriting was the skill he chose to concentrate on refining. His writing was "the most distinctive thing [he] had going," he felt back during the early '70s — as do his legions of fans to this day.
When I listen to Springsteen, I don't just feel a story being told or a mood being conjured, I feel the characters, as if years of inner life are conveyed in a few minutes. Springsteen's 1982 song "Atlantic City" is one of the most cinematic I've ever heard, with a simple but evocative story (a desperate young man in love turning to crime). The verses of "Atlantic City" escalate the hopelessness, but one coupled with a refrain of possibility in the chorus.

The latest scandal in New Jersey politics is a blip on the radar compared to the corruption of former US Senator Bob Menendez, but it’s a minor scandal nevertheless: Congressman Josh Gottheimer has been forced to admit he faked a social media post of an all-Bruce Springsteen Spotify Wrapped of his top songs.
Gottheimer posted the alleged screenshot on Friday (December 6th), appearing to show that his top five tracks were “Thunder Road,” “Because the Night,” “Glory Days,” “Badlands,” and “The Rising.”

“No surprises here,” the Democratic Representative wrote. “Fun fact: My first ever concert was at Meadowlands to see The Boss!”
Considering the website for his gubernatorial campaign says Gottheimer grew up “catching a Springsteen show every chance he could get,” it all seemed believable enough. Plus, he came out to “Glory Days” while announcing his campaign for governor.

It’s not hard to be a Bruce Springsteen fan. Millions of people around the world do it every day effortlessly, relishing the power, the glory, the promise, the majesty, the mystery, and the ministry of rock & roll as only Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen can deliver it. It’s much harder to fake being a Bruce Springsteen fan. And yet that’s somehow the situation Josh Gottheimer, a Democratic politician from — you’ll never believe this — New Jersey, has found himself in.

Bruce Springsteen’s recent appearance at a Philadelphia rally for Kamala Harris features in a new campaign ad that the rocker shared on social media just days before the election.
In the ad dubbed “Hopes and Dreams” — a nod to his song “Land of Hope and Dreams,” which he performed at the Temple University rally on Oct. 28 — Springsteen denounces Donald Trump and offers his compelling case why Americans should vote Harris-Walz on Election Day.
“This election is about a group of folks who want to fundamentally undermine our American way of life.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gave Asbury Park, New Jersey a show to remember with an epic headlining set at Sea.Hear.Now festival on Sunday night.
The show was a homecoming for Springsteen and the band, who got their start playing gigs in and around Asbury Park in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Appropriately, the first half of the Sea.Hear.Now setlist leaned heavily into material from Springsteen’s debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., as well as other Jersey-centric songs. Notably, Springsteen performed tracks like “Blinded by the Light,” “Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?,” “Thundercrack,” and “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” for the first time in nearly a decade.

Joe Dante, best known for directing 1984's "Gremlins" and its sequel, thrives in the 1950s B-movie genre. Flashes of cartoon comedy can also be found in his work, such as 2003's "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," along with satirical dark comedic aspects in films like "The Burbs." The '80s experienced a boom in sci-fi adjacent films that mimicked the Spielbergian formula where the wondrous nostalgia of childhood mixed with the otherworldly awe of extraterrestrial existence, and Dante incorporated aspects of this in his 1985 science fantasy, "Explorers."
There are several factors behind the commercial failure that greeted the film on its release: a rushed production, along with the release of "Back to the Future" around the same time, overshadowed most of the film's merits, which were appraised positively by critics at the time. Although "Explorers" is no "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," the film's innate charm helped it garner a cult following over the years,...

The world of “John Wick” is continuing to expand its footprint with Lionsgate Television developing a new sequel series.
The project, titled “John Wick: Under the High Table,” would pick up immediately after the events of “John Wick: Chapter 4.” The studio is currently shopping the idea, with no network or streaming service attached.
“John Wick has left the world of the High Table in a tenuous position and a collection of new characters will look to make a name for themselves while some of the franchise stalwart characters remain committed to the old-world order,” the longline states. “The series will combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age.”
The show comes from the team behind the “John Wick” film franchise, with Chad Stahelski directing the pilot and executive producing alongside his company 87Eleven Entertainment, Keanu Reeves and Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road.
