Exclusive: Pablo Larraín’s Maria has become the Chilean filmmaker’s highest grossing movie at the international box office. With $23.3M from 54 overseas markets, the Angelina Jolie-starrer this week overtook both Spencer ($17.8M) and Jackie ($23M) outside of North America. Maria is still in release in multiple markets with Korea, Lithuania and Norway on deck, among others. Fremantle fully financed and FilmNation handled worldwide sales on the Maria Callas biopic.
Maria is the third film in Larraín’s English-language triptych exploring iconic female protagonists, following 2016’s Jackie and 2021’s Spencer. It reimagines American-Greek soprano Callas in her final days as she reckons with her identity and life.
The Steven Knight-scripted drama had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last September, with Italy ultimately becoming the movie’s top offshore market to date. The gross there, where Rai distributes, is $3.32M.
Via Studiocanal, Germany is the second biggest market with $3.1M.

British musician and DJ Matthew Herbert has pretty much done it all. After making a name for himself in electronic music (his 2003 manifesto “Personal Contract for the Composition of Music” famously emphasizes “no drum machines”) and launching his label Accidental Records, he ended up remixing such iconic artists as Quincy Jones, Ennio Morricone, Serge Gainsbourg, and classical composer Gustav Mahler.
His production work has seen him work with the likes of The Zone of Interest composer Mica Levi, Róisín Murphy (one half of the pop duo Moloko), and frequent collaborator and Icelandic songstress Björk. Best known for turning ordinary or so-called found sound into electronic music, he has also become a go-to partner for film and TV creators looking for a score. Cases in point are such films as A Fantastic Woman and Starve Acre, as well as such TV series as The Responder and Noughts and Crosses.

With an evocative opening-credits sequence as the camera swirls through a virtual landscape of neon signs and lights, one might think they are witnessing the beginning of the next Gaspar Noé film. Thankfully what follows in Flora Lau’s second feature Luz is less puerile and exasperating than the work of that enfant terrible, but it could use an inkling more bite. A mood piece above all else, the emotionally detached drama follows two disparate, vaguely connected stories of alienated individuals adrift in a world consumed by technology that may in fact be the only path toward healing.
We’re first introduced to Wei (Xiao Dong Guo), an ex-convict working as the heavy for a nightclub owner in the bustling, neon-soaked city of Chongqing, his only real connection seemingly with cam girl Fa (En Xi Deng), with whom he just wants to have a conversation. A visual marvel, Flora Lau’s “Luz” is likely to send you out of the theater in search of palpable reality: some grass to touch, maybe, or a hand to hold.
Nearly all of her characters are shatteringly isolated, divided even in their faltering attempts at connection. But they are bound, at minimum, through a mystical deer created by a celebrated Chinese artist before he died. The deer sits at the center of a giant painting in a seedy Chongqing club, where strangers escape into virtual reality alone and together.
The club’s most popular VR world — called Luz, which means both “Light” and “Separation” — also involves the deer, who has to evade participants hunting it. Among the players is young camgirl Fa (En Xi Deng), whose livestreams are persistently interrupted by Wei (Xiao Dong Guo), a middle-aged man claiming to be her lost father. Since she won’t agree...

An unprecedented co-production between Vietnam, Chile and Spain, “The Meeting” has found its director. The project was first announced at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2023.
Arantxa Echevarría, winner of Spain’s Oscar equivalent, a Goya, for her feature debut “Carmen and Lola” and whose €8.3 million ($8.6 million) box office with political thriller “Undercover” (“La Infiltrada”) has made her the highest-grossing female director in Spain’s cinematic history, has boarded the co-production as its helmer and co-screenwriter.
The political thriller details a historical encounter between Chile’s doomed president Salvador Allende, whose downfall heralded the rise of the brutal military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet in 1973.
“When I learned about ‘The Meeting,’ I knew that I was the one to tell this story. First because both characters, of vital and historical importance, were tremendously attractive. They both changed the geopolitics of the world, they admired each other and were, in many ways,...

Films like Emilia Pérez and Will & Harper make for vastly different yet similarly unprecedented awards contenders
Strangely, improbably, as we move toward Oscar season, there are two trans films that are considered serious contenders for major awards – including one that could possibly even land best picture.
To say that this has never happened before is an understatement. The Oscars tend to be an extremely heteronormative affair – you have to go back to 2017 to see the last time Hollywood honored a queer-themed film for best picture with Moonlight, and looking back before that, the LGBTQ+ representation is very, very sparse. What you’ll find even less of is trans representation at the Oscars – the Academy awards had existed for 89 years before a single film platforming a trans story with a trans actor won any award at all and there has been very little since.

As the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) concludes its fifth edition, the event has reaffirmed its role as a significant platform for the creative industry on the island – and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
With a focus on collaboration and cultural representation, Tccf 2024 brought to light three key trends that reflect Taiwan’s evolving position in the global entertainment landscape.
International Collaboration Takes Center Stage
A prominent theme at this year’s Tccf was the increasing focus on international co-productions. Industry leaders gathered to discuss the practicalities and advantages of cross-border partnerships, both locally within southeast Asia and much farther afield. For example, Oscar-winning production company Fabula (“A Fantastic Woman”), the Chilean production house founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín and Venice Critics’ Week Grand Prize winner Tana Gilbert (“Malqueridas”), is developing “Where Is Narumi?“, a documentary series examining the 2016 killing of Japanese student Kurosaki Narumi by her ex-partner Nicolás Zepeda.

Oscar-winning production company Fabula (“A Fantastic Woman”) and Venice Critics’ Week Grand Prize winner Tana Gilbert (“Malqueridas”) are developing “Where Is Narumi?”, a documentary series examining the 2016 killing of Japanese student Narumi Kurosaki by her ex-partner Nicolás Zepeda.
The project marks a collaboration between Gilbert and the Chilean production house founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, which recently earned two Academy Award nominations in 2024 for “El Conde” (Best Cinematography) and “The Eternal Memory” (Best Documentary Feature).
Gilbert, whose connection to the case stems from having attended the same university as Zepeda, brings a personal perspective to the project. “As a woman and storyteller, I feel a deep responsibility to help break down harmful narratives about women from within,” she explains. Drawing from her experience working with archival materials, Gilbert plans to examine the digital footprints left behind by both Zepeda and Kurosaki, analyzing how “misogyny manifests in digital...

Filming has begun in Scotland on Big Beach’s adaptation of Borges And Me starring Fionn Whitehead, Luis Gnecco, and Alan Cumming.
Marc Turtletaub directs from a screenplay by Oren Moverman in which the memoir’s author Jay Parini finds himself stuck in a Morris Minor chauffeuring the brilliant, blind Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges through Scotland in 1970.
As a young student, Parini harbours dreams of becoming a writer and struggles to make sense of the 70-year-old, irrepressible Borges, until events take a surreal turn, leading the men to a place where they find common ground. The cast includes Peter Mullan and Harriet Sansom Harris.

New York-based indie sales outfit Visit Films has acquired international distribution rights to Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato’s pensive second feature “Surfacing” (“La Llegada Del Hijo”) ahead of its global debut on Sunday as part of the San Sebastián Film Festival’s prestigious New Director’s Competition.
“We have had the privilege of helping launch films in San Sebastián for many years and are so pleased to be working on ‘Surfacing.’ Atán and Pivato have crafted a delicately balanced film that threads the fine needle of emotional subtlety and full-blooded passion. It exists as an example of the duality of human existence and will be a thrilling watch for audiences,” Visit President Ryan Kampe said in a statement.
The Argentine directors previously worked on 2017’s “The Desert Bride,” (“La novia del desierto”) which screened at Cannes as part of its Un Certain Regard section, going on to stun audiences...

Launched last year by Wes Anderson’s producing partners at Indian Paintbrush, Galerie has emerged as a well-curated film club publishing unique selections of films from artists with their personal annotations. Chilean actor Alfredo Castro will make his directorial debut with the psychological thriller “Los Trabajadores de la Muerte,” which translates to “the workers of death.”
Based on Diamela Eltit’s novel of the same title, the film is penned by Castro and Pablo Valledor. Chile’s Storyboard Media and Les Films de l’Âge d’Or in France co-produce.
Producer and co-writer Valledor tells Variety the project is representative of his larger goal to ramp up international co-productions: “As a producer, my intention is to get involved in projects that present a radical approach and an attractive cinematic language,” he explained. “The aim of Les Films de l’Âge d’Or is to establish a structure dedicated to projects of this nature, creating a bridge between the Americas and Europe to ensure that funds are obtained and that these films are made through well-established international co-productions.”

“The Hyperboreans,” the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry from Chile, defines the inventive works that have emerged from this small nation. Many of its films touch on traumatic national events of the past but play with rarely explored genres in the region. Case in point: the country’s recent Oscar submission, “The Settlers,” about Chile’s bloody colonial 1901 battle in its south, is a neo-Western.
Helmed by animation mavens Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, “The Hyperboreans” (“Los Hiperbóreos”) combines live action and stop-motion animation in a story that also stands out for its singularity. In it, Chilean actress and psychologist Antonia Giesen films a script from her patient’s mind, leading to a reality-bending spiral when she discovers it originates from Nazi poet Miguel Serrano.
“We planned this as an exhibition of the filming process at an art gallery in Chile, so we filmed this in a single space and with only one actress,...

Fremantle has renewed its first-look partnership with Chilean production company Fabula in a deal that will see the companies develop a slate of original dramas and films. Fremantle’s international sales wing, Fmi, will distribute the drama projects worldwide.
Fabula and Fremantle have just wrapped production on Sebabstián Lelio’s film musical The Wave, in partnership with Participant Media, which tells the story of the mass protests and university rallies that took place during Chile’s so-called “feminist May” in 2018.
Later this year they will launch Pablo Larraín’s Maria starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, produced alongside Fremantle and Germany’s Komplizen Film.
