I was late to watch the Telugu movie Krishna Gadi Veera Prema Gadha (KVPG). No longer being able to go to a movie theatre being one reason and no meaningful (legally or illegally) way of acquiring a good print to watch is another. If the movie is out of theatres, which is typically a week in Australia, you need to wait till the DVDs arrive which could take few weeks to months depending on the whims of the movie makers. Back to the movie, I felt so sorry to miss the movie. It was a treat to watch. I never expected the director, Hanu Raphavapudi, to bring this kind of a treat to the telugu audiences. To the people who are used to brain dead, mocking and useless comedies, someone brought in a black comedy. Can you believe that?
Krishna (Nani), a timid guy, who also happens to be a Balakrishna fan, loves a girl from a powerful local family. However, he does not have the balls to take it forward into marriage hood. When we are being treated to his struggles and escapades, the story takes a twist, he and his girl's family gets dragged into a fight that involves the police, local and international mafia. Do not even think this is a sudden twist and the story takes a turn, with all new characters leaving the old ones out like we are used to in typical telugu entertainers. Surprisingly, everything happens for a reason. The misunderstandings, mistakes and crimes generate lots of humour.
A big thumbs up for the fine performances from Nani and the cast, the direction, the research, the time spent fine-tuning the story and photography. There are a number of scenes I thought showed the kind of hard work, the directory made on the script. One that stood out, the hero, though he cannot understand, acquires a copy of week magazine and reads it. Why? It has a news item on Balakrishna. This is typical of a number of fans (be it sports or movie stars) I came across in real life. They acquire and save anything that is related to their stars.
