Fantasia 2020 Review: Alone is a Heart-Stopping Thrill
Image
Alone stars Jules Wilcox and Marc Menchaca and is directed by John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning). The film is an official selection of the 2020 Fantasia International Film Festival and made its International Premiere on August 27, 2020.

Jessica (Jules Wilcox) is picking up the pieces of her life, after her husband’s death, and has packed up to rebuild her life in her hometown. On the long, lonely highways of the Pacific Northwest she keeps encountering the same man (Marc Menchaca). At first, a close brush with a car accident makes her fearful that he’s targeting her for some kind of road rage incident. Even when these fears subside… something just doesn’t seem right. What comes next is a fight against time, the elements, and a relentless pursuer.

Alone is a gripping story of survival and the fighting spirit. The plot is minimalist and straightforward, but Alone as...

‘Alone’ Review: Misery Is Company in Tense Thriller About a Woman’s Flight From a Serial Killer
Image
Unpleasantly effective “Alone” centers on a heroine who wishes she were just that; instead, she’s got insistent, unwanted company in the form of a probable serial killer. John Hyams’ U.S. remake of a not-particularly-well-regarded 2011 Swedish thriller is an apparent improvement in all departments, with the original’s reported plausibility issues and other flaws subsumed in what emerges a tense, muscular suspense exercise.

After playing the Fantasia Festival’s virtual edition, it gets released by Magnet to theaters and on demand Sept. 18. With its compellingly simple narrative of automotive pursuit and wilderness survival, this is a scary movie especially suited to the surprise resurgence of drive-ins.

Jessica (Jules Willcox) is introduced loading a small U-Haul trailer with her possessions before driving out of Portland, seemingly for good. It takes a while before we learn that she’s leaving in the wake of a grave personal tragedy that’s referenced but not really explained.

Watch: First Trailer For Zombie Movie Alone Explores Lockdown Isolation
Image
We’ve entered a stage where the limits of lockdown conditions are being tested by horror filmmakers, with the first trailer for zombie movie Alone having been released, which will resonate powerfully with more than a few viewers.

The story sees lone man Aiden attempt to survive an uprising of zombies (“screamers”) by barricading himself inside his apartment as the world goes to hell on the streets outside. With nothing but his own company to keep him going and food gradually dwindling, his odds of surviving and remaining sane look bleak until he discovers his neighbor is also still alive, and attempts to save her.

Although Alone might seem like it was made as a reaction to the current world conditions, it had completed filming months before the pandemic hit, with it just so happening that many standard setups of zombie films mirror current reality, except for the virus transforming...

Tyler Posey Locks Himself Away from the Screamers in 'Alone' Trailer
Sozinhos (2015)
"Find a place to hide, and stay there." Lionsgate has released a trailer for a horror thriller titled Alone, not to be confused with any of the other films also titled Alone, including the one this year (about a kidnapping). This Alone is another pandemic virus thriller mixed with zombie horror. But the zombies in this are called "Screamers". Aidan barricades himself inside his apartment and rations his food. His complex is overrun by infected Screamers, and with the world falling apart into chaos, he is left completely alone fighting for his life. Tyler Posey stars as Aidan, but the full cast includes Donald Sutherland, Robert Ri'chard, Eric Etebari, and Summer Spiro. So he's not entirely alone in this. Doesn't look like anything really worth it. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Johnny Martin's Alone, direct from YouTube: When an outbreak hits, Aidan (Tyler Posey) barricades himself...

Kim Su-an, Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Sohee, and Choi Woo-sik in Invasão Zumbi (2016)
Film Review: #Alive (2020) by Cho Il-hyung
Kim Su-an, Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Sohee, and Choi Woo-sik in Invasão Zumbi (2016)
In Korea, the zombie film is no novelty. From the highly regarded “Train To Busan” to 2018’s period contagion flick “Rampant,” filmmakers across the country have flirted with the idea of placing the undead in their projects, often yielding mixed results. Some of the better productions boast nuanced class commentary and flurries of social satire, whilst some of the less impactful fall foul of something resembling a formulaic novelty. “#Alive,” Cho Il-hyung’s adaptation of Matt Naylor’s “Alone,” lies somewhere in the middle. Although a sure-fire box-office hit (the movie signalled hope for domestic cinema in the Covid age after attaining the highest weekend ticket sales since January’s “The Man Standing Next” upon its release), it occasionally falters in depth and memorability. However, Cho’s directorial debut does offer likeable leads and a swiftly executed plot, so if you are searching for something which excels in surface-level enjoyability,...

Bipasha Basu Makes A Comeback After 5 Years. She tells Subhash K Jha why she was tempted back to work by Vikram Bhatt.

You have been missing from the screen for a while. Is it because you had more interesting things to do?

Yes, I’ve been missing from screen. Post my marriage I wanted to take some time off. But I wasn’t quantifying my time. So I had no idea how much time I was taking off. I was happy building my relationship with my partner (Karan Singh Grover). I spent a lot of time with him and my parents and sisters. That’s something I hadn’t done for a long time.

You started your career early?

You know, I left home to work from the time I was 16. I didn’t even realize I had taken such a long time off from my acting job. But I...

Garrett Bradley’s Documentary ‘Time’ Sets Theatrical Debut Before Launching on Amazon Prime Video (Exclusive)
Image
Garrett Bradley’s documentary “Time,” an intimate portrait of mass incarceration in America, will debut in select theaters on Oct. 9 before launching on Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 23.

“Time” had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. At the annual Park City gathering, Garrett was awarded best director for U.S. documentary in competition, becoming the first Black woman to win that prize. The documentary will also screen at this year’s New York Film Festival.

Amazon nabbed the film out of Sundance, reportedly shelling out $5 million for global rights. “Time” generated rave reviews, with Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge writing, “the cumulative impact — boiled down into an open-minded and deeply empathetic 81 minutes — will almost certainly rewire how Americans think about the prison-industrial complex.”

“I could not be more humbled to have worked with the Richardson family who allowed me to bring their story to the big screen,...

‘Aew Women’s Tag Team Cup Tournament: Deadly Draw – Night One’ Review
Image
Welcome to this debut review of All Elite Wrestling’s Women’s Tag Team Cup Tournament: Deadly Draw – Night One, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and this tournament is a part of an overall initiative to increase the appeal of Aew’s Women’s division, which has struggled to make a mark like the men’s wrestling has in that same league. We’re getting WCW’s BattleBowl: The Lethal Lottery/Tna’s Joker’s Wild rules here, with partners randomly being paired together as opposed to teams being made naturally. Let’s see if this comes together as something worth remembering, or is just Home Alone 3.

Match #1: The Nightmare Sisters (Brandi Rhodes & Allie with Dustin Rhodes & Qt Marshall) def. Mel & Penelope Ford (with Kip Sabian) – Quarter-Final Match

My Opinion: 2.9 out of 5 – This was cool, with Allie kicking ass and Mel doing pretty well as well.

Alone Trailer Drags a Lonely Widow Through a Nightmare in the Woods
Image
Magnolia Pictures has released a trailer for Alone. The upcoming thriller is the work of filmmaker John Hyams. He may not be a name that many people know offhand, but Hyams has been rising through the ranks, directing Netflix's hit zombie series Black Summer, as well as several episodes of Z Nation. But Hyams is taking a detour from the undead for his latest effort, which is a tale of survival horror that, as we can see from the trailer, looks like it is going to be a thoroughly tense experience.

The trailer kicks off with a sweeping overhead shot of the woods, coupled with a woman screaming, "help me." We then take a detour to find a woman, who seems rather on edge, taking a road trip, seemingly to escape. A man who can be described as unsettling approaches her, asking penetrating questions about her journey. That bad vibe proved to be warranted,...

Gangsters and Gore: How By Force Alone Subverts Arthurian Myth
Sozinhos (2015)
This post is sponsored by

When Lavie Tidhar set out to write his own Arthurian legend, he wanted to cut through the nationalistic myth-making into the bone of the original stories.

“It’s supposed to be about chivalry and honor, and it’s . . . it’s not!” He told Clarkesworld. “Everyone else was doing the story the way we’re told it goes, not the way it actually goes.”

The way it goes, in Tidhar’s By Force Alone, is as a bloody, bawdy gangster story where heroes are con men and England isn’t worth fighting for. Some of the ideas he uses appear in the original myth, while others give new context to familiar characters. The idea of Arthur’s return to usher in a golden age for England is still a familiar cultural touchstone, layered with irony, context and mystery that have also been part of the story from nearly the beginning.

Exclusive: Tyler Posey (MTV’s Teen Wolf) has signed on to star opposite Lelia Symington (Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash) in Brut Force, the first feature from writer-director Eve Symington.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: 5 Things The Reboot Can Improve (& 5 Ways It Can Fail)
Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley in Piratas do Caribe: A Maldição do Pérola Negra (2003)
Pirates of the Caribbean has not one, but two reboots on the way. First, Disney announced it was bringing back Ted Elliott, the writer behind the first four flicks, to reboot the franchise in its sixth installment. And recently, a shock announcement created waves: Margot Robbie will pick up the mantle for an entirely separate reboot.

Related: Pirates Of The Caribbean: 5 Ways To Reboot The Franchise (& 5 Reasons It Should Be Left Alone)

There's clearly still life in the series left, but there's two ways it can go from here: improving on the existing movies or failing its loyal fans. If the next movies stay true to what made Pirates of the Caribbean a success in the first place, it could soar. But if it tries  too many new tricks, it could be a disaster as epic as Davy Jones' Locker.

Comparisons between Led Zeppelin and Semisonic — the alt-pop band best known for the rousing 1998 hit “Closing Time” — are few and far between. Magnet Releasing Nabs 'Alone' Thriller for North America (Exclusive)
Sozinhos (2015)

Netflix schedule: Here’s what is coming and leaving in June 2020
Image
Netflix has confirmed that 47 new original movies, series, documentaries and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in June. Leading off the lineup are the debut of “Da 5 Bloods,” a film by Oscar winner Spike Lee about four Vietnam vets revisiting their past, and the second season of Ryan Murphy‘s satire “The Politician.” And just in time for Pride is season 5 of “Queer Eye.”

The documentary slate is filled with such varied films as “Spelling the Dream” about the Scripps National Spelling Bee, “Lenox Hill” about the staff of the famed New York hospital, and “Athlete A” about the sexually abuse scandal that rocked the Us gymnastics team

And in these trying times, we can take comfort in the slew of stand-up specials, including new sets by George Lopez, Jo Koy and Eric Andre, as well as such lighter fare as the Will Ferrell comedy “Eurovision Song...

Theatrical Releases Firmed up in Korea as Summer Season Approaches
Image
Major local film titles are beginning to appear on the Korean releasing schedule as Covid-19 retreats and the peak summer season approaches.

Since Korean cinemas began reopening earlier this month, cinemas schedules have relied heavily on re-runs, mixed with a handful of foreign, smaller new releases. That is about to change.

Since the coronavirus ran rampant from February, local distribution giants Cj Entertainment, Lotte and Showbox canceled or postponed dozens of theatrical outings. “Time to Hunt” was rescheduled multiple times and then switched to a straight to streaming release via Netflix. The pattern was repeated in May.

What has changed is the retreat of the virus threat, effective social distancing measure sin cinemas and the arrival of the summer season, which is traditionally a peak period, especially for genre and horror. That’s because school is out and audiences retreat into theaters to escape the heat.

Acemaker Movieworks’ mystery thriller “Intruder,...

Streaming Spotlight: Sundance With Subtitles by Amber Wilkinson
Sozinhos (2015)
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night After turning our Streaming Spotlight on some of Sundance's less well-known indie gems a couple of weeks ago, we thought we'd have a look at some of the subtitled films that have screened there. The attention of critics is, understandably, most drawn to the premiere and Us Dramatic Competition sections of the festival but both the World Cinema Competition and Midnight sections often harbour gems of their own, some of which go on to get a bigger spotlight after travelling to other festivals. Here's a handful to catch if you can. You'll note that there is a slight skew towards Latin America in these titles - a result perhaps of Sundance being able to get an early pick of these as opposed to European films, which gravitate more readily to Berlin or Cannes.

Monos, Netflix

Worth seeking out for the tour de force score by Mica Levi,...

New on Netflix: June 2020 Releases
Andrea Barber, Candace Cameron Bure, and Jodie Sweetin in Fuller House (2016)
As the summer begins to roll in it’s a time of endings for Netflix. No, Netflix isn’t going anywhere anytime soon obviously. The streamer continues to claim that its set up to churn out content through the rest of the year despite the coronavirus pandemic freeze on TV and movie production. Netflix’s new releases for June 2020, however, are highlighted by a couple of high profile finales.

13 Reasons Why premieres its fourth and final season on June 5. Before that, Fuller House is set to bow on June 2…though that franchise has been through the finale experience before so we’ll see about that. The Netflix original shows that are (presumably) in the middle of their run this month include Queer Eye (June 5), F is for Family, and The Politician (June 19).

June also will mark the arrival for a couple of high profile Netflix original film projects. Spike Lee’s latest,...

Watch: Lovely Short 'Alone Together' About the Lockdowns Worldwide
Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo in Alone Together (2018)
"Lying, thinking... Last night how to find my soul a home." Need a dose of positivity? Or a warm, friendly (virtual) hug? Watch this short. Alone Together is a beautiful, lovely short film made by filmmaker Andy Delaney (we also featured his short Christmas Spirit last year) created during the coronavirus lockdown to bring us together wherever we may be. Maya Angelou's "Alone" is a poem about loneliness and togetherness, a "thinking out loud" reflection on vulnerability and community; "Nobody, but nobody, can make it out here alone." Though originally written in 1975, it clearly resonates with the alone/together experiences we've all lived through during the pandemic. The short features a reading of the poem by Dr. Maya Angelou's son, Guy Johnson, spoken over footage filmed by cinematographers / filmmakers from 11 different countries. It's a moving little poetic short film that feels so comforting, a heartfelt reminder that we are all in this together.

Shazam! Annabelle: Creation Director David F. Sandberg Brings More Scares With Not Alone In Here
Image
Ready for another terrifying horror flick? Director David F. Sandberg, the same dude who brought us Shazam!, Lights Out, and Annabelle Creation, has made another short, scary-as-crap, movie during quarantine with his wife Lotta Losten.

Their first was the creepy short, Shadowed.

The follow up is the frightening Not Alone In Here.

I love this 6-minute film! How great would it be to see this scary short put before The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – scheduled for a theatrical release on September 11.

Read our review of Annabelle: Creation here.

The director debuted Not Alone In Here on Twitter:

Not Alone in Here. @lottalosten and I made another horror short in quarantine. We tried something different this time and it’s our longest short yet at over 6 minutes.

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Ride ’em, spiritual cowboy! Dillon James (‘American Idol’) does justice to a Bob Dylan classic and makes the Top 20 [Watch Video]
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
Who doesn’t love a tale of redemption and recovery?”American Idol” hopeful Dillon James might be just 26, but he has gone to homeless hell and back after overcoming his addiction to alcohol and drugs. With an ornate tattoo of Jesus Christ that encases his entire torso, this construction worker from Bakersfield, Calif., has made a definite commitment to cleaning up his act.

When we first met Dillon during the audition rounds, he told the judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan that he had a good home life growing up. But when he got older, “I met my trials and tribulations.” Now that the singer is sober, he is “trying to do better than what I was doing before.”

When he was at his worse, Dillon confessed, “I lost pretty much lost everything. I found myself on the streets with no money.” Instead of going off the deep end,...

Sophie Stevens in First Trailer for Psychological Horror 'The Haunted'
Sozinhos (2015)
"Alone... in a house of secrets." Vertical Ent. has debuted a trailer for an indie horror called The Haunted, not the most original title but that's not indicative of much. This premiered at Screamfest a few years back, now getting an official release (in the Us) coming up this May. Arriving at an isolated house for her first nightshift, young care-taker Emily is left alone to face a terrifying vengeful spirit in this disturbingly clever, psychological horror. Only 75 minutes long! Sophie Stevens (from "Doctors" and The Black Prince) stars as Emily, along with Ray MacAllan, Nick Bayly, Maggie Daniels, and Virginia Denham. It does look like it might be quite scary, but hard to tell if there's more going on in this than just another haunted house. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for David Holroyd's The Haunted, direct from YouTube: Emily (Sophie Stevens) arrives for her first night-shift as a care-giver,...

Film Review: Shutter (2004) by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom
Ananda Everingham and Natthaweeranuch Thongmee in Espíritos: A Morte Está ao seu Lado (2004)
“Shutter,” the commercially successful Thai horror film that has spawned three remakes, among which an American one that received mostly negative reviews but was a huge box office success, has divided critics since it was first screened at the Bangkok International Film Festival. However, audiences around the world seem to love it and it has been heralded by many as one of the greatest Asian horror films of the 21st century. I personally believe that “Shutter” offers a few elements to be considered a cut above the rest, but ultimately fails to overcome its overabundance of clichés and lack of compelling scares.

After a long night of drinking with friends, Tun and Jane, a young couple, hit a woman with their car while returning home and they flee the scene of the accident. The following days, many bizarre happenings occur and they start noticing some strange shadows...
