Director Richard Linklater rues that Hollywood has taken to creating sexless characters and superheroes without genitalia.

The writer/director of films including the Before trilogy and Boyhood is behind Netflix’s Hit Man, one of the standout successes at last year’s Venice Film Festival. Linklater calls the movie, starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, a “sexy crime thriller meets screwball comedy” and says the plot hinges on Arjanoa’s character Maddy being “the one he will risk everything for, just to sleep with her.”

Linklater told The Times of London: “Sex and violence is what cinema is great at. Sex was always the great seller; I don’t know why they backed off from that. Hollywood started feeding this new generation characters that were sexless. Superheroes don’t have sex. They don’t have genitalia, frankly.”

Today, Swiss songstress Mary Middlefield returns with a brand new single entitled “Sexless,” alongside its mesmerizing accompanying music video. The release of “Sexless” follows the arrival of her debut album, Thank You Alexander, which dropped on March 3. Born mid-pandemic, Thank You, Alexander was Middlefield’s cathartic response to heartbreak and sadness. The album reflects her journey through themes of infidelity, romance, and abuse, with songs such as her debut track “Band Aid,” “Two Thousand One,” and “This One’s For You,” garnering support from music publications like Clash, Notion, and The Line Of Best Fit.

Black Entertainment Television (Bet) has turned to the digital realm for new content. The cable and satellite channel picked up three original web series from entertainment and lifestyle network Black&Sexy for airing on linear television.

The first series picked up by Bet is RoomieLoverFriends, which debuts on September 16, 2015, at 11 Pm Est on the cable channel. The drama series, written by Black&Sexy co-founders Dennis Dortch and Numa Perrier and premiering online in 2012, follows the story of two roommates whose relationship gets complicated after they find themselves in bed together. Directed by Dortch, RoomieLoverFriends will have one hour-long episode aired each week on Bet.
