The cast and crew of Star Trek may have emerged from a perilous region of space...for now. The venerable science fiction franchise, which has been buffeted by the galactic storm of financial instability suffered by its corporate owner, Paramount, is now charting a course for unknown territories, thanks to the recently completed merger between Paramount and Skydance. Amid a corporate restructuring, the franchise is staying put.
According to reports, the small-screen Star Trek franchise is staying put at CBS Studios, which has been its home since 1966, when Star Trek: The Original Series debuted under the auspices of what was then known as Paramount Television. This appears to be a matter of inertia; Star Trek series are currently produced for the Paramount+ streaming service, which is now the focus of Paramount TV Studios, the merged entity that combines the former assets of Skydance Television and Showtime. Paramount recently released a series of images for their upcoming show "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," and Trekkies are already poring over them, looking for clues, details, and character quirks that might more closely inform them as to what kind of series we'll be looking forward to. The cast for the series has already been announced, and it will include Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta as its central Starfleet Cadets. None of their characters' names have been released yet, but we'll know them soon enough.
The cast will also include Tig Notaro, reprising her role as Jett Reno from "Star Trek: Discovery," as well as Robert Picardo, reprising his role as The Doctor from "Star Trek: Voyager." As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds prepares for season 3, the creators are revealing the unmade plans for a crossover with another classic Trek show!
The joy of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is how easily it channels the feel of The Original Series. Set a decade before that show, Snw expertly plays out its themes as viewers love the adventures of Christopher Pike with a crew that includes a younger Spock with James Kirk still a rising star in Starfleet.
The series relishes in breaking the conventions of Trek and doing different genres. That includes the famous musical episode that worked well. There was also the excellent "Those Old Scientists," which managed to bring live-action versions of Star Trek: Lower Decks characters Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) to meet the Enterprise crew thanks to time-travel shenanigans.

Among the new age Star Trek shows, Strange New Worlds has definitely come out on top, but how well does it hold light to some of the Og shows? The episodic prequel to Tos sees the Enterprise headed by Christopher Pike, with a young Spock and a newbie Uhura also being on board the ship before they serve under Captain Kirk.
Despite being spun off from Discovery, Strange New Worlds has taken an identity of its own and has become the most anticipated show in the franchise. Coupled with the animated series Lower Decks, the Anson Mount-starrer has brought in a new era of Star Trek that blends nostalgia and the best parts about the franchise. Here are five reasons why Strange New Worlds is better than one of the most popular Star Trek shows.

Comedy in the 23rd Century with the crew of the USS Enterprise has always been a levity reprieve while exploring and promoting Federation ideals in the Alpha Quadrant. In Tos, most notably with the sparring comedy team of the Vulcan “straight man” in Lieutenant Spock and the “captain sarcasm” in Medical Officer “Bones” McCoy. Star Trek creators were quite smart in balancing the seriousness of first contact missions, alien species conflicts, and the dangers of unknown space anomalies within the light-hearted fun of comedy and laughter at light-speed.
With Star Trek’s first musical episode in Snw, to the adult animated Star Trek comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks – injections of comedy have always been a part of Star Trek’s appeal, and it is as alive today as it was some sixty years ago from the 1966 iconic Tos that launched a global phenomenon.

"We're gonna be okay, right?" "I hope so... it would suck if we werent." Quiver Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for an absurd new comedy called Nuked, about a group of friends who get super stoned. The title isn't really a pun on being high, it's actually related to the story and what happens while they're high. This premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival and will be released this summer on VOD for everyone to also get stoned and watch. A group of friends gets together for a cannabis-infused, technology free, dinner party only to learn a bomb is headed right for them. This seems to be a riff on that Hawaii nuclear missile freak out from 2018, where they accidentally announced that a missile was on the way for 30 minutes before it was called off as a mistake. The pot kicks in right as they realize that they...

Star Treklegends Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes are revealing what they think is the “best” Star Trek show ever made - and spoiler, it’s not The Next Generation. Spiner and Frakes originated the roles of Lieutenant Commander Data and Commander Riker, respectively, in 1987 when Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered. Over the years, the duo reprised their roles in feature films and various other TV incarnations of Trek, including Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Picard.
After decades of appearing in Star Trek, Spiner and Frakes, who, per Screen Rant, appeared together at South Texas Comic Con, talked about what they consider the best iteration of Trek. The pair both agree that they love what Mike McMahan and his crew from the animated Star Trek: Lower Decksdid for the world of Trek.

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner love Star Trek: Lower Decksand called it "the best show ever" for breaking one of Star Trek's rules. Star Trek: Lower Decks ended on Paramount+ in December 2024 after five seasons. Jonathan Frakes was the first big name from Star Trek: The Next Generation to appear on Lower Decks, voicing Captain Will Riker in seasons 1 and 2. Brent Spiner joined Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 and voiced an alternate universe (and purple) version of Lt. Commander Data's head.
Appearing at South Texas Comic Con together, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner were asked about their stints voicing Riker and Data on Star Trek: Lower Decks.Brent and Jonathan effusively praised Mike McMahan's animated comedy, with Frakes explaining how Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid guest-starring in the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover episode Frakes directed broke a long-held rule in Star Trek about 'no improvisation.'...

Star Trek: Picard’sthird season saw Brent Spiner’s Data character (who has died twice over the course of the Trek franchise’s long run) become the most human-like, although still synthetic, version of himself. Season 3 of Picard reunited the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast for one final mission during which they (spoiler), save the galaxy yet again.
Spiner, per ScreenRant, appeared on The Sackhoff Show, during which host Katee Sackhoffasked the Data actor whether he would ever play the iconic android again. Spiner said that “it could still happen” and touched on Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas’ idea of a spinoff that would feature Jeri Ryan’s Captain Seven of Nine. Fans have been clamoring for Star Trek: Legacysince Season 3 of Picard ended in 2023, with online and in-person petitions.

It’s been a year since Star Trek: Discoveryended its five-year mission on Paramount+, but that isn’t stopping its star from thinking about the future of her character. Sonequa Martin-Green, who played Commander and then Captain Michael Burnham on Discovery, is dishing about which Star Trek captain she’d like to share the screen with in the future.
During a Star Trek panel at Fan Expo Dallas, Martin-Green told ScreenRant’s Joel Deckelmeier that she had given some thought to which Trek captain she’d like to see her Michael Burnham character cross over with. Her answers made sense based on the fact that they are two of Trek’s most trailblazing captains. But, she said she’d love to work with all the Star Trek captains.

While fans tend to root for some couples on the show, like the beautifully tragic relationship between Tai (Tawny Newsome and Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Van (Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewson), Shauna and Melissa's situationship felt a little off from the start — and things only got worse when adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) and adult Melissa (Hilary Swank) crossed paths again after many years away from each other. During a recent episode of Collider Ladies Night, Nélisse addressed the romance and weighed in on Shauna's point of view.
During the interview, Nélisse told Ladies Night host Perri Nemiroff that there is a lot of nuance to Shauna's feelings. At the same time, she underscored that the context in which this relationship came to life was...

One of the amazing things about "Star Trek" is that it can work in so many different ways. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" proved that "Star Trek" is truly malleable and can exist as both a ridiculous animated comedy and a truly excellent sci-fi series at the same time -- and apparently we almost got another "Star Trek" comedy that would have tested the boundaries of what "Star Trek" can be. In an interview with The New York Times in 2021, executive producer, screenwriter, and director Alex Kurtzman revealed that when the folks at Paramount first started looking into the future of "Star Trek" and streaming, there was almost a live-action spin-off that would have been a big swing for the franchise.
Though "Lower Decks" went on for five glorious seasons and there's apparently a "Star Trek" live-action comedy series in the works from "Lower Decks" alum Tawny Newsome, who played Beckett Mariner,...

It's time for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to boldly go further into comedy territory.
Per Popverse, Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding appeared at Emerald City Comic Con's Strange New Worlds panel, where they talked about the show's love of genre pastiche and what genre should be parodied in future seasons. Specifically, Gooding wanted to see Strange New Worlds tackle "Reality. Like, very Abbott Elementary, St. Denis Medical, The Office, just something like that." When the moderator asked if that meant applying The Office's signature mockumentary-style format to an episode's cinematography, they responded, "Sure."
Among Strange New World's most acclaimed episodes last season included a crossover with Star Trek:Lower Decks -- utilizing both animated sequences and casting Lower Decks' actors as their characters -- and a musical storyline where an "improbability field" causes the USS Enterprise crew to break into song and dance.
While the latter won't be returning...

The affable yet socially awkward Lt. Jr. Grade Bradward Boimler from the adult animated series Star Trek: Lowers Decks, voiced by the talented comedic actor Jack Quaid, is starring in his first leading movie role in the action-comedy Novocaine.
Novocaine is premiering exclusively in theatres on the weekend of March 15th, 2025, and it’s likely to top the week's box office while competing with current top box office movies Mickey 17 (starring Robert Pattinson), Captain America: Brave New World (starring Anthony Mackie), and the live-action animated adventure Paddington in Peru.
Jack Quaid is the son of actors Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid, and it’s clear he inherited their comedic timing and acting talent from his wildly famous parents. Jack has voiced Boimler in Lower Decks for 5 seasons, and I couldn’t imagine anyone else portraying this accident-prone fastidious Federation “by the book” conformist!

From action films like Pacific Rim Uprising to subtle dramas like Priscilla, Cailee Spaeny continues to experiment with a variety of challenging roles. In her latest movie,Alien: Romulus, the actress has showcased her potential to lead an iconic franchise. One of the most engaging aspects of Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus is the young cast. It evolves the franchise for modern viewers while showing nostalgics that different narratives can be told. In this case, it's a group of young scavengers who run into Xenomorphs rather than seasoned soldiers and experienced scientists.
This approach speaks to the wonder and inquisitive nature of youth. At the core of Romulus is Cailee Spaeny's Rain, who just wants a fresh start. As expected, Spaeny delivers range and impressive nods to Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley. She's certainly a character that sequels can be built around.

The official Star Trek site announced today that production is now underway on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. A first-look image from the set, featuring Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), and Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), was also shared. You can check that out below.
I’m thrilled that another season of Strange New Worlds is underway, but we still don’t have a release date for the third season! All we know is that it will debut on Paramount+ sometime this year. The first season premiered in May, and the second dropped in June, so we can likely expect a summer release for this one as well. Hopefully, we’ll get a firm date for that soon. Strange New Worlds has been my favourite of the new Trek shows. It’s taken some big swings, with a musical episode and a crossover with the animated Lower Decks series.

Time waits for no one, not even the powerhouse franchise that is Star Trek. The franchise continues to roll along, even after the failure of Star Trek: Section 31. The failed made-for-streaming film disappointed across the board, severely impacting future plans for other films of its type. Made-for-streaming films however may be the future of the franchise, whether fans want them or not.
That means that Star Trek needs to try again, and again if they have to. Having an avenue that can generate buzz and interest and continue stories that diehard Star Trek fans want to see is imperative for the further growth and development of the franchise. However, That only happens if we can do this on a relatively tight budget.

Star Trek: Lower Decksmay have ended its five-year run, but collectors will soon be able to own a version of two of the most famous “Lower Deckers.” Per StarTrek.com, collectible figure company Exo-6, known for their museum-grade 1/6-scale figures, has crafted both a Bradward Boimler and a Beckett Mariner figure, based on their live-action characters in the crossover episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 episode “Those Old Scientists.”
In Season 2, Episode 7 of Strange New Worlds, Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) are thrust through a time portal back to the 23rd century and end up aboard Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) U.S.S. Enterprise, where they try desperately not to mess up the timeline. Star Trek alum Jonathan Frakes directed the episode.

Star Trek fans may not have to wait too much longer for a new comedy series, that is if Tawny Newsome has anything to say about it. The actress who starred in Star Trek: Lower Decks as Beckett Mariner, was tasked with coming up with a new live-action comedy series. Alongside Justin Simien, the pair were given the lead on a new series that would focus on the crew of a pleasure planet.
Think The Office meets Star Trek but with a non-Starfleet main cast. It's one of those show concepts that really only exists because of Alex Kurtzman and his need to have as many different types of Star Trek shows as possible. A live-action, comedy, set as a workplace comedy? I'm not sure anyone is really asking for that kind of content for Star Trek.

Starfleet Academy is the newest Star Trek series coming to Paramount+. It will center around the first class of cadets in over 100 years as they work their way toward a career in Starfleet. Set in the 32nd century, the series will also bring back the emergency medical hologram [Robert Picardo] from Star Trek: Voyager as well as Tig Notaro from Star Trek: Discovery on a regular basis. Mary Wiseman [Sylvia Tilly] and Oded Fehr [Admiral Vance] will be recurring characters as well.
Now here's the exciting news. Starfleet Academy season one is two weeks away from completing production, according to Alex Kurtzman in an interview he gave Trekmovie. That means it could possibly release on Paramount before the end of 2025 as most series don't need nearly eleven months to complete post-production.
While we could see the first season this year, production for the second season is underway as the scripts are being written in the writers' room.

Paramount+ has been the "home" of Star Trek for several years now, but the home is starting to need a lot of work. Until Starfleet Academy makes its debut, probably some time in 2026, only one Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds, will be airing on the streaming channel after Paramount+ cancelled both Discovery and Lower Decks. Though the channel still houses all of the other series, including Star Trek: The Original Series, new Trek is looking a little scarce.
There is a new workplace comedy by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simbien in development, but that hasn't been picked up. And in 2023, Paramount+ cancelled one of its biggest fan-driven series, Star Trek: Prodigy which found another home at Netflix. By now, everyone knows that the reason we've lost some Star Trek shows is because of finances. Paramount+ hasn't been making any money so it doesn't have it to spend on Trek.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will likely be the last show of its kind. An animated, comedy, science fiction series, that caters almost exclusively to a niche audience? Yeah, we're not seeing that again anytime soon. The circumstances for its existence will never be replicated.
Paramount+ needed dynamic content that catered to multiple types of people and only had a fininte amount of franchises to pull from. Seeing this was at a time when the money was flowing freely from banks and investors, Paramount took the money in order to build up Paramount+.
So they greenlit shows, regardless of how much interest or money they drew. They needed original content to compete with other services, and with the influx of money coming in to do just that, Paramount got bold and took risks.
Now, those same investors want their money back. This isn't exclusively a Paramount issue, as most streaming services...

Tawny Newsome was already a huge fan of Star Trek before she was cast as Beckett Mariner on Star Trek: Lower Decks, the animated comedy which came to a close after five seasons last month. Newsome believes it was her love of the franchise that helped her get the job on Lower Decks. In an interview with Television Academy, Newsome talked about how series creator, Mike McMahan, asked her to "riff about Star Trek" during her audition. Newsome ended up talking about Deanna Troi's [Marina Sirtis] ball gowns on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
But as much as she knew about Star Trek and all of its iterations, when it came to the Easter eggs in Lower Decks, she didn't know all about them. We're still not over the end of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and to be quite honest, we might never be. Every "Star Trek" fan loves "Lower Decks." Well, at least all of us here at /Film do -- I can't speak for any of the contrarian weirdos out there who hate fun or are somehow allergic to animation. Fans have become extremely attached to the cast, and their voices now rattle around in the dark recesses of our brains. Whenever I do a rewatch of "Craig of the Creek" (another show coming to an end too soon), I feel my heart break a little whenever Noël Wells' voice as Kelsey creeps into sounding like her "Lower Decks" character, Ensign D'Vana Tendi. I'm just not ready to admit that it's really over.

Star Trek: Lower Decks apparently didn't know how it wanted to end. That's the word from series star Tawny Newsome. She recently spoke to Variety about the close of the show and it turns out that series creator Mike McMahan was not sure how he wanted the series to end.
That's not a shocker at all. Ending a story is never easy. Especially when you're in a situation where you have to create an ending almost out of nowhere. There was a lot of talks of Lower Decks planning out more seasons before the ax came down, and when that's the case, you sort of have to scramble a bit to pull out the finish.
Sometimes that finale can really land, and sometimes it can be a bit of a cluster. Either way though, the story will end, so it's always good to figure out ahead of time how you want to end a show.

For four seasons on Star Trek: Enterprise, Jolene Blalock portrayed the epitome of a Vulcan with her character T’Pol. It’s been nearly 20 years since Enterprise concluded its run. Star Trek: Lower Decks’ penultimate episode, Season 5’s “Fissure Quest,” which featured several multiverses, saw the return of the fan-favorite character and the actress who played her.
Lower Decks’ creator and showrunner Mike McMahan sat down with CinemaBlend to discuss Blalock’s Star Trek franchise return after so many years. “A big thing that we made sure with Jolene is that there was tons of communication and tons of respect,” McMahan explained. “I wrote her a letter explaining how important her work on Enterprise was to me not only as a fan, but also as a writer of Star Trek and how I defined Vulcans and that T’Lyn (a Vulcan Lower Decks character voiced by Gabrielle Ruiz) is like...

Jack Quaid is moving on from Star Trek: Lower Decks and Lieutenant Brad Boimler, but Jack stars in two of the most exciting new movies to kick off 2025, Companion and Novocaine. For five seasons, Quaid played the animated Brad Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as Boimler's transporter clone, Captain William Boimler. Jack also brought Ensign Brad Boimler to live-action, alongside Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' acclaimed season 2 crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Making his motion picture acting debut as the villainous Marvel in The Hunger Games, Jack Quaid's star has steadily risen since 2019, when Jack hit Prime Video as one of the series leads in The Boys. Following up voicing Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks, Quaid returned to movie screens as Richie Kirsch, one of the Ghostface killers in Scream (2022). Paramount+ will premiere its first-ever streaming Star Trek movie in January with the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31, and its director Olatunde Osunsanmi says that the movie could lead to more streaming features in the future. Per Trek Movie, the director, known for his work on the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Discovery, spoke to SFX Magazine about the movie and the future of other streaming films.
“Hopefully the fans love Section 31 and love this format, and we’re able to continue this format with other stories and be able to expand the universe so much faster, because it doesn’t have to all be television series,” Osunsanmi said. “It can be one pop, one pop, one pop. If the audience - the fans - they love it, the sky’s the limit with what we can do…I think I might get into a bit of trouble if I expand upon that.
