The twelfth Star Trek series since Gene Roddenberry’s original CBS show debuted in 1966, Starfleet Academy is the sixth small screen entry in the franchise since the debut of Discovery in 2017. Overseen by franchise-runner Alex Kurtzman, the new series was co-created with Noga Landau, who created the four-season-long Nancy Drew series for The CW. In development since Kurtzman’s original deal with CBS back in 2018, the series has gone through many iterations and timelines before settling on the future setting used since Discovery’s third season.

Paramount recently released a series of images for their upcoming show "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," and Trekkies are already poring over them, looking for clues, details, and character quirks that might more closely inform them as to what kind of series we'll be looking forward to. The cast for the series has already been announced, and it will include Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta as its central Starfleet Cadets. None of their characters' names have been released yet, but we'll know them soon enough.

As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds prepares for season 3, the creators are revealing the unmade plans for a crossover with another classic Trek show!

The joy of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is how easily it channels the feel of The Original Series. Set a decade before that show, Snw expertly plays out its themes as viewers love the adventures of Christopher Pike with a crew that includes a younger Spock with James Kirk still a rising star in Starfleet.

The series relishes in breaking the conventions of Trek and doing different genres. That includes the famous musical episode that worked well. There was also the excellent "Those Old Scientists," which managed to bring live-action versions of Star Trek: Lower Decks characters Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) to meet the Enterprise crew thanks to time-travel shenanigans.

Star Treklegends Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes are revealing what they think is the “best” Star Trek show ever made - and spoiler, it’s not The Next Generation. Spiner and Frakes originated the roles of Lieutenant Commander Data and Commander Riker, respectively, in 1987 when Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered. Over the years, the duo reprised their roles in feature films and various other TV incarnations of Trek, including Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Picard.

After decades of appearing in Star Trek, Spiner and Frakes, who, per Screen Rant, appeared together at South Texas Comic Con, talked about what they consider the best iteration of Trek. Sonequa Martin-Green, who played Commander and then Captain Michael Burnham on Discovery, is dishing about which Star Trek captain she’d like to share the screen with in the future.

During a Star Trek panel at Fan Expo Dallas, Martin-Green told ScreenRant’s Joel Deckelmeier that she had given some thought to which Trek captain she’d like to see her Michael Burnham character cross over with. Her answers made sense based on the fact that they are two of Trek’s most trailblazing captains. But, she said she’d love to work with all the Star Trek captains.

Tawny Newsome, known to many as Beckett Mariner in the animated Star Trek: Lower Decksseries, is developing a live-action workplace comedy set in the Star Trek universe. She recently gave an update on the project to Trek Movie, saying that there’s a chance that some “legacy” Star Trek actors could find their way to the new series.

Newsome is developing the comedy with Justin Simien. The project was first announced at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. While she didn’t go into a lot of detail regarding the new series, when asked about the time period it could be set in, she said, “The era is still shifting, but my dream, of dreams is to keep it in the 25th century.”

Per Popverse, Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding appeared at Emerald City Comic Con's Strange New Worlds panel, where they talked about the show's love of genre pastiche and what genre should be parodied in future seasons. Specifically, Gooding wanted to see Strange New Worlds tackle "Reality. Like, very Abbott Elementary, St. Denis Medical, The Office, just something like that." When the moderator asked if that meant applying The Office's signature mockumentary-style format to an episode's cinematography, they responded, "Sure."

Among Strange New World's most acclaimed episodes last season included a crossover with Star Trek:Lower Decks -- utilizing both animated sequences and casting Lower Decks' actors as their characters -- and a musical storyline where an "improbability field" causes the USS Enterprise crew to break into song and dance.

In this case, it's a group of young scavengers who run into Xenomorphs rather than seasoned soldiers and experienced scientists.

The official Star Trek site announced today that production is now underway on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. A first-look image from the set, featuring Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), and Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), was also shared. You can check that out below.

I’m thrilled that another season of Strange New Worlds is underway, but we still don’t have a release date for the third season! All we know is that it will debut on Paramount+ sometime this year. The first season premiered in May, and the second dropped in June, so we can likely expect a summer release for this one as well. Hopefully, we’ll get a firm date for that soon. Strange New Worlds has been my favourite of the new Trek shows. It’s taken some big swings, with a musical episode and a crossover with the animated Lower Decks series.

The failed made-for-streaming film disappointed across the board, severely impacting future plans for other films of its type. Made-for-streaming films however may be the future of the franchise, whether fans want them or not.

The newest addition to the Star Trekfranchise family, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, just received a big update. Per Collider, the series, set in the 32nd century, has just finished filming its first season at Toronto’s Star Trek Stage.

Two of the series’ cast members, Zoë Steiner and Bella Shepard took to social media to commemorate the occasion. In her post, Steiner held up a Starfleet Academy pennant given to the cast and crew for the first season. Star Trek: Lower Decksmay have ended its five-year run, but collectors will soon be able to own a version of two of the most famous “Lower Deckers.” Per StarTrek.com, collectible figure company Exo-6, known for their museum-grade 1/6-scale figures, has crafted both a Bradward Boimler and a Beckett Mariner figure, based on their live-action characters in the crossover episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 episode “Those Old Scientists.”

In Season 2, Episode 7 of Strange New Worlds, Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) are thrust through a time portal back to the 23rd century and end up aboard Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) U.S.S. Star Trek’slatest feature film, and its first released exclusively on Paramount+, is now available for pre-order on physical media, just a week after its streaming debut. A limited edition 4K Blu-ray Steelbook of the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31, as well as a standard 4K Blu-ray will be released on April 29, per GameSpot.

The movie, focusing on the black-ops, secret Starfleet division, Section 31, which first was seen on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is available for pre-order on Amazon and Walmart for $38 for the 4K Blu-ray Steelbook. A new age of Star Trekmay be coming soon as Alex Kurtzman, who is in charge of Star Trek at Paramount, gave an update on the future of Trek and the forthcoming live-action comedy series. The series, which remains untitled from Tawny Newsome (Star Trek: Lower Decks)and Justin Simien,was first introduced in July 2024 at San Diego Comic-Con.

Starfleet Academy is the newest Star Trek series coming to Paramount+. It will center around the first class of cadets in over 100 years as they work their way toward a career in Starfleet. Set in the 32nd century, the series will also bring back the emergency medical hologram [Robert Picardo] from Star Trek: Voyager as well as Tig Notaro from Star Trek: Discovery on a regular basis. Mary Wiseman [Sylvia Tilly] and Oded Fehr [Admiral Vance] will be recurring characters as well.

Now here's the exciting news. Starfleet Academy season one is two weeks away from completing production, according to Alex Kurtzman in an interview he gave Trekmovie. That means it could possibly release on Paramount before the end of 2025 as most series don't need nearly eleven months to complete post-production.

While we could see the first season this year, production for the second season is underway as the scripts are being written in the writers' room.

Paramount+ has been the "home" of Star Trek for several years now, but the home is starting to need a lot of work. Until Starfleet Academy makes its debut, probably some time in 2026, only one Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds, will be airing on the streaming channel after Paramount+ cancelled both Discovery and Lower Decks. Though the channel still houses all of the other series, including Star Trek: The Original Series, new Trek is looking a little scarce.

There is a new workplace comedy by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simbien in development, but that hasn't been picked up. And in 2023, Paramount+ cancelled one of its biggest fan-driven series, Star Trek: Prodigy which found another home at Netflix. By now, everyone knows that the reason we've lost some Star Trek shows is because of finances. Paramount+ hasn't been making any money so it doesn't have it to spend on Trek.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will likely be the last show of its kind. An animated, comedy, science fiction series, that caters almost exclusively to a niche audience? Yeah, we're not seeing that again anytime soon. The circumstances for its existence will never be replicated.

Paramount+ needed dynamic content that catered to multiple types of people and only had a fininte amount of franchises to pull from. Seeing this was at a time when the money was flowing freely from banks and investors, Paramount took the money in order to build up Paramount+.

So they greenlit shows, regardless of how much interest or money they drew. They needed original content to compete with other services, and with the influx of money coming in to do just that, Paramount got bold and took risks.

Tawny Newsome was already a huge fan of Star Trek before she was cast as Beckett Mariner on Star Trek: Lower Decks, the animated comedy which came to a close after five seasons last month. Newsome believes it was her love of the franchise that helped her get the job on Lower Decks. In an interview with Television Academy, Newsome talked about how series creator, Mike McMahan, asked her to "riff about Star Trek" during her audition. Newsome ended up talking about Deanna Troi's [Marina Sirtis] ball gowns on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

We're still not over the end of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and to be quite honest, we might never be. Every "Star Trek" fan loves "Lower Decks." Well, at least all of us here at /Film do -- I can't speak for any of the contrarian weirdos out there who hate fun or are somehow allergic to animation. Fans have become extremely attached to the cast, and their voices now rattle around in the dark recesses of our brains. Whenever I do a rewatch of "Craig of the Creek" (another show coming to an end too soon), I feel my heart break a little whenever Noël Wells' voice as Kelsey creeps into sounding like her "Lower Decks" character, Ensign D'Vana Tendi. I'm just not ready to admit that it's really over.

Star Trek: Lower Decks apparently didn't know how it wanted to end. That's the word from series star Tawny Newsome. She recently spoke to Variety about the close of the show and it turns out that series creator Mike McMahan was not sure how he wanted the series to end.

That's not a shocker at all. Ending a story is never easy. Especially when you're in a situation where you have to create an ending almost out of nowhere. There was a lot of talks of Lower Decks planning out more seasons before the ax came down, and when that's the case, you sort of have to scramble a bit to pull out the finish.

Sometimes that finale can really land, and sometimes it can be a bit of a cluster. Either way though, the story will end, so it's always good to figure out ahead of time how you want to end a show.

The Paramount+ animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks concluded its fifth and final season on Dec. 19, 2024, and now the complete series is available for pre-order. Paramount+ will premiere its first-ever streaming Star Trek movie in January with the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31, and its director Olatunde Osunsanmi says that the movie could lead to more streaming features in the future. Per Trek Movie, the director, known for his work on the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Discovery, spoke to SFX Magazine about the movie and the future of other streaming films.

“Hopefully the fans love Section 31 and love this format, and we’re able to continue this format with other stories and be able to expand the universe so much faster, because it doesn’t have to all be television series,” Osunsanmi said. “It can be one pop, one pop, one pop. If the audience - the fans - they love it, the sky’s the limit with what we can do…I think I might get into a bit of trouble if I expand upon that.
