Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, aiming for a February 27, 2026 release date, and we’ve seen some surprising reports about the slasher sequel as it has made its way through production – with the most surprising and strange news being that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Ghostface killers who were killed off in Scream (1996) and Scream 3, respectively, and David Arquette, whose beloved character Dewey lost his life in Scream (2022), are all in the cast. But there’s one person on the Scream franchise body count that has been hoping to come back for Scream 7 and hasn’t been contacted yet: Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played ill-fated college student Cici Cooper in Scream 2.
Gellar told Entertainment Tonight (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “I’m not in [Scream 7]. I tried to get in [Scream 7], nobody wanted me. They were bringing everybody back.

Halfway through the 2020s, the verdict is still out about whether or not this has been a good decade for movies. Every one of the past five years, beginning with the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, has been marked with concerning debates about the state of Hollywood, the viability of continued large-scale filmmaking and the entertainment industry’s future. That said, there is one silver lining that cinephiles can find from the past five years of movies: the slasher genre is back.
The 2020s has turned out to be a surprisingly great decade for the horror subgenre. Here are the five best slasher films that it has given us so far.
“Freaky” (Universal Pictures) “Freaky” (2020)
It may have been rolled out in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, but “Freaky” still ranks as one of the first great slasher movies released in a decade that has turned out to be a strong period for the genre.

Have you ever used a dating app? Felt nervous about not knowing what to expect? Well, the protagonist of today’s movie is very nervous, especially when she starts receiving increasingly unsettling messages on her phone. Drop taps directly into this contemporary anxiety, transforming a fancy dinner date into a harrowing high-stakes hostage situation orchestrated entirely through the seemingly innocuous interface of a phone. The film presents a chillingly plausible nightmare where technology designed to connect people becomes a terrifying instrument of coercion and surveillance, forcing its protagonist into an impossible game where every notification could mean life or death.

Netflix's reboot of Little House on the Prairie has hitched up its wagon. The new vision of Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic series of novels, and its long-running and well-remembered TV adaptation, has found its main character. Lessons in Chemistry's Alice Halsey will play Laura Ingalls on the new TV series. Halsey steps into the shoes of Melissa Gilbert, who played the role on the original TV series. Joining her will be Luke Bracey (Point Break) and Crosby Fitzgerald (Palm Royale) as her parents, and Skywalker Hughes (Joe Pickett) as her sister Mary.
Halsey starred as the daughter of Brie Larson's chemist-turned-cooking-host on Apple TV+'s Lessons in Chemistry, and has also appeared on Days of Our Lives and Night Court. She also lends her voice to the Disney Jr. animated series Kindergarten: The Musical. She takes on the role of Laura Ingalls, the fictionalized version of the books' author,...

If you missed Heart Eyes in theaters earlier this year or have been hesitant to rent or purchase it on VOD, you're in luck, because the rom-com slasher is finally making its way onto Netflix starting May 8, 2025. Per What's on Netflix, Heart Eyes will make its streaming debut on May 8, and remain on Netflix for 18 months before it heads to Hulu. The move is part of Sony Pictures' first-window deal with the streaming service that has all of their theatrical titles in 2025 debut on there a few months after their initial release. When Christopher Landon was announced as taking over the directorial reigns of the "Scream" franchise from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gilpin of Radio Silence, it felt like the perfect passing of the torch to a person who was always meant to be at the helm of a Ghostface vs. Sidney Prescott showdown. "Some people don't know this, but one of the reasons why I was so excited to do 'Scream 7' was because I was an intern at the company that made the original 'Scream,'" he told me during an interview with Fangoria Magazine.
It was 1995, and Landon was tasked with reading a spec horror script from an at-the-time unknown writer named Kevin Williamson. It only took him a few pages of reading before he knew he had to convince his supervisor to buy it. Becoming the director of "Scream 7" was the kind of full circle career moment Hollywood loves,...

Director Christopher Landon is no stranger to challenging concepts with a high degree of filmmaking difficulty. His 2017 hit “Happy Death Day” was a horror riff on “Groundhog Day,” where he had to present the same events dozens of times with subtle and obvious changes, all while keeping the story clear and the visual style varied. In “Freaky,” Landon crafted a body-switch movie as intricate in its plotting as it is breezily entertaining — a complicated thriller that comes across as simple and effortless thanks to the filmmaker’s meticulous construction and unerring calibration of horror and comedy.
Like Landon’s previous films, his new movie “Drop” is a tonally tricky genre film with a logistical challenge at its center. Set almost entirely in a high-end restaurant, the movie follows widowed mother Violet (Meghann Fahy), who, while on a date, receives a series of threatening texts from someone claiming to have her son.

Christopher Landon exited ‘Scream 7’ because he was receiving death threats. The 50-year-old director was meant to helm the upcoming horror flick, though exited the project in December 2023 after he started to receive threatening messages when actress Melissa Barrera, 34, made social media posts about the Israel-Palestine War that were deemed antisemitic.Speaking with Vanity Fair, he said: "People were threatening to kill me and my family, to the point where the FBI was getting involved. I got messages saying, ‘I’m going to find your kids, and I’m going to kill them because you support child murder.’"The head of security at various studios and the FBI had to examine the threats. It was highly aggressive and really scary."Despite the hostile environment he found himself in, Landon did not fire Barrera - who was dismissed from the film by production company Spyglass Media in November 2023 - with the...

Before Christopher Landon was developing his latest film, Drop, he was preparing to tackle a creature feature remake. Back in 2022, the Happy Death Day helmer had a gnarly take on the classic Arachnophobia in the works with Amblin Partners involved and James Wan's Atomic Monster producing. It seemed like the perfect project for him, thanks to his brand of horror-comedy, but it sadly will never see the light of day. In a new conversation with TheWrap, Landon confirmed that he is no longer involved in the feature and shared what his vision was for the spider-centric flick.
Released in 1990, the original Arachnophobia from Frank Marshall takes place in rural California, where a deadly spider arrived in the U.S. after hitching a ride with a dead nature photographer from Venezuela. When people mysteriously begin dropping dead in the photographer's hometown, local arachnophobe Dr. Ross Jennings (Jeff Daniels) suspects the...

It looks like it's honesty week when talking about Scream 7. Things kicked off with Jenna Ortega revealing that it wasn't scheduling conflicts or a pay dispute that led to her dropping out of the seventh installment, with the real reason being the issues surrounding Melissa Barrera's firing and not being able to make the film with the team she had become accustomed to. Now director Christopher Landon, who was set to helm the seventh entry, is revealing a bit about what happened when he had to exit the project and the end result says a lot about the negative side of the fandom.
During a chat with the Evolution of Horror Podcast, Landon was candid about his exit, and it's easy to see that how the experience turned out still affects him because he really wanted to do the film. However, despite how things turned out, he believes...

Christopher Landon was all set to direct a horror movie, and then his life became one. Now, he's spoken up about the terrible period where he was receiving death threats for something he didn't do.
It all started when Scream star Melissa Barrera made posts on her social media about the Israel-Gaza war, a highly emotive and fraught situation. Scream 7's production company, Spyglass, interpreted the posts as anti-semitic and fired her. People were furious, and some turned that anger onto Christopher Landon, believing he had something to do with the firing.
Landon made a quick post about the matter (via Entertainment Weekly) that read "Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make," indicating that he was up against some pretty intense accusations flying his way. He then deleted the post. But things didn't get better from there - they got worse. Jenna Ortega, a big name attached to the film,...

Christopher Landon doesn't harbor ill-will towards Spyglass Media Group or any of the other folks involved with Scream 7. The Happy Death Day franchise director was on deck to helm the seventh installment of the beloved slasher franchise after Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett passed over the reins following Scream and Scream VI. Shortly after Landon’s position was announced, the production went off the rails, with the firing of Melissa Barrera following a pro-Palestinian social media post which we recently learned sparked Jenna Ortega’s exit. Then, just a little over one month later, Landon stepped down from the project, leaving a big question mark over its future. Eventually, universe creator and frequent scribe, Kevin Williamson, was brought on as director, with fan favorites such as Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard, Courteney Cox and more set to return.

There’s a small glimmer of hope for all the Happy Death Day fans out there. Director Christopher Landon and lead actress Jessica Rothe took the stage at the American Cinematheque over the weekend and confirmed that the third film in the horror franchise isn’t dead just yet.

Plans to make Happy Death Day a trilogy have been in the works for years. At a recent double feature event screening the first movie and its sequel, director Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe revealed that Happy Death Day 3 is "moving forward" during a recent double-feature screening at the American Cinematheque. Watch the clip here.
The 2017 movie Happy Death Day is a black comedy slasher about a college student named Tree Gelbman (Rothe) who has the worst birthday ever. After being brutally murdered, Tree gets trapped in a time loop, forced to repeat the day over and over again until she can find the culprit and prevent her death from happening. The 2019 sequel took a turn into science fiction territory, placing Tree in yet another time loop, this time in a parallel universe.

Just one week after yet another non-update on the status of Happy Death Day 3, franchise star Jessica Rothe announced at a double feature screening of the first two movies that the long-awaited third installment in the horror-comedy franchise is now “moving forward”!
“The third movie is moving forward,” Jessica Rothe said on stage at the American Cinematheque last night, with Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon by her side.
Landon himself added, “It is moving forward.”
It’s been six years since the release of Happy Death Day 2U, with fans spending these past six years wondering why the financially successful franchise hasn’t yet made its return. Landon recently revealed that Universal and Blumhouse at one point considered doing a third installment as a three-part miniseries for Peacock, which of course didn’t end up happening.

On a day when much of the United States faced the fear of economic collapse, horror fans descended upon New Orleans to celebrate big screen scares.
Thursday was the launch of the 2025 Overlook Film Festival, a four-day fest filled with screenings of unreleased movies, retrospectives and immersive events. Festival co-founders Landon Zakheim and Michael Lerman welcomed the crowd to the opening night film, Christopher Landon’s “Drop.” They reflected on how the festival is showing more titles than ever this year — a respite from the world around them.
“It’s the worst year of our lives, but a great year for horror and genre,” Zakheim said.
“Drop” was met enthusiastically by the opening night crowd, which embraced both the mystery and the humor of the techno-thriller. After the screening, Landon did a Q&a with Lerman where he reflected on his time shooting movies like “Happy Death Day” in New Orleans.

There are few American archetypes that are more enduring and iconic than that of cowboys in the Wild West. From pulp paperback novels to the silver screen, Westerns have been thrilling audiences worldwide for over a century, with that distinction also spreading to television shows. Westerns once dominated the television airwaves in the United States, with some of the longest-running shows in the medium's history coming from the genre. As a testament to their timeless appeal, Westerns have seen a resurgence of popularity recently.
As their ubiquity solidified, Westerns have expanded beyond their usual American Southwest period piece setting with grounded stakes. The genre has proven flexible enough to incorporate different global environments, time periods, even lacing in elements of the supernatural and science fiction. What are constants within the genre are people standing up in largely lawless and remote areas to defend themselves from those that would openly exploit them.

The Salvatore School for the Young and the Gifted attracts all kinds, perhaps more than Headmaster Alaric Saltzman first anticipated. The supernatural school at the center of Legacies caters to teenagers with paranormal abilities, particularly witches, werewolves, and vampires. At the time of its founding, these were the only creatures known to the universe. But with the introduction of Hope Mikaelson, a tribrid who is the result of a werewolf and werewolf-vampire hybrid coupling, more magic wielders from all walks of life come out of the woodwork.
While at school, Hope amasses a squad of friends who help her deal with these new monsters that crop up from the dark pit of Malivore. Her collection of friends spans from the typical crop of vampires to creatures who, like herself, range on the power scale. When trying to save the world from evil, many power sets are required, but only one can remain on top.

While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop moved forward first, and is aiming for an April 11th theatrical release. With that date swiftly approaching, a featurette has arrived online to give Landon a chance to discuss his “suspenseful, exciting, emotional” film, which he describes as a blend of Hitchcock and the style of ’90s thrillers. You can watch the featurette in the embed above.

Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us) star as a budding couple embarking on a first date that goes terribly awry thanks to a twisty murder plot in Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon’s thriller Drop.
The suspenseful thriller sets its whodunnit in motion when widowed mother Violet begins receiving mysterious airdrops on her phone, lighthearted memes at first that quickly snowball into sinister threats, prompting Violet to commit murder before her loved ones suffer the price.
Landon, speaking with Bloody Disgusting at SXSW for the film’s premiere, shared the true origins that inspired Drop. He explains, “Our producers were on vacation; they’re in a restaurant, and they started getting all of these mysterious airdrops from somebody in the restaurant. They could not figure it out. They never figured it out. They never solved it, but that’s when they were like,...

Director Christopher Landon describes Drop as “suspenseful and exciting and emotional” in the new featurette below.
“The movie is like a roller coaster,” the filmmaker explains. “It’s this very gradual ascent up the ramp, and then once you get to the top, you hit that drop.”
Produced by Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the horror-thriller drops into theaters on April 11 from Universal.
Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us) star as a couple on a blind first-date whose romantic dinner spirals into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse in which everyone’s a suspect.
“Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry is more charming and handsome than she expected. But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.

In the months since exiting “General Hospital,” actress Kelly Monaco (ex-Sam McCall) has been relatively quiet on social media. That changed recently when she announced she would host a brand-new podcast series with long-time friend Shanna Moakler, titled “Bad Bunnies,” a reference to their time as Playboy playmates.
“Buckle up, Bunnies… Kelly Monaco & @shannamoakler are teaming up for a brand-new podcast, Bad Bunnies!” said Monaco in a post on Instagram announcing the new project. “Unfiltered. Untamed. Unapologetic. We’re bringing you Hollywood secrets, wild stories, pop culture tea, and real talk—nothing is off-limits!
“But before we drop our first episode, we want to hear from You! What topics do you want us to spill on? Reality TV chaos? Dating disasters? Hollywood drama? Let us know in the comments! Tag your besties & get ready—Bad Bunnies is coming Soon!”

Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, and we’ve seen some surprising reports about the slasher sequel as it has made its way through production – with the most surprising and strange news being that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Ghostface killers who were killed off in Scream (1996) and Scream 3, respectively, and David Arquette, whose beloved character Dewey lost his life in Scream (2022), are all in the cast. During an appearance on Good Morning America, Foley admitted that, like many Scream fans, he isn’t sure how his return actually works.
Foley said, with thanks to Deadline for the transcription, “I don’t know how it works out. Spoiler alert! 25 years ago I was the killer in Scream 3 and he was brutally taken to town and killed. And now I’m back in Scream 7 and I’m not sure how it’s going to work.

Goofy, high-concept horror efforts succeed or fail based on more than just the talent involved or their dedication to the bit. Christopher Landon, as evidenced by genre mashups like Happy Death Day, Freaky, and Heart Eyes, understands that when the stakes are sky high, the emotions need to be firmly grounded. This is especially apropos for Drop, a high-rise-set, single-location thriller that delivers its shocks liberally mixed with the easy humor and unpretentious emotionality that’s become the filmmaker’s stock in trade.

Sometimes even the best television shows are victims of their own success, running longer than their natural story should at the expense of their overall quality. From will-they/won't-they romances fulfilled too quickly or the show trying to prolong its central conflicts and mysteries, popular shows try to artificially draw out their narratives to maintain audiences. This leaves even the most ardent fans of a given show acknowledging that there are lesser seasons missing the magic that made the series so successful. A perfect show knows when to call it quits before it overstays its welcome, but very few of them can take that hint.
Simply put, even many beloved shows just try to milk the last bit of success they can, even after enduring changes to their overarching plot or main cast. In doing so, the legacy of these prolonged series is a bit tarnished from their previous esteemed status.

There are a handful of book series that are geared towards girls and young women that have managed to really stand the test of time, like the always-fun "The Baby-Sitters Club," and one of the great classics, "Little House on the Prairie." The semi-autobiographical novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder followed her family as they made their lives on a tiny farmstead near Plum Creek and the town of Walnut Grove, Minnesota, from the 1870s through the 1890s. The beloved novels were turned into a TV movie and then a television series by NBC, starring Michael Landon as patriarch Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as his wife Caroline, Melissa Gilbert as middle daughter Laura, Melissa Sue Anderson as Laura's older sister Mary, and twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush as younger sister Carrie Ingalls. The series ran for nine seasons, from 1974 through 1983, giving audiences nearly a decade to get to know the Ingalls...

The teaser trailer for the gonzo horror-sci-fi comedy “Companion” released late last year stated that it was “from the studio that brought you ‘The Notebook.’”
This is cheeky, for sure, but it’s also technically true: “Companion” studio New Line Cinema was responsible for the beloved Ryan Gosling/Rachel McAdams romance. It works to offset your expectations, particularly because the next card reads that the movie is also “from the unhinged creators of ‘Barbarian.’”
More than just a funny marketing hook, the “Notebook”/”Barbarian” comparison also speaks to the vibe of the movie, described by the studio as “a new kind of love story,” which splits the difference between terror and tenderness as it traces the dissolution of a relationship over one chaotic weekend. That’s when Josh (Jack Quaid) and his robot companion Iris (Sophie Thatcher) find their relationship strained – and covered in blood. (The film has grossed a respectable $27 million worldwide so far.

It's been 41 years since the story of Little House on the Prairie came to its explosive conclusion. A lot has been said about the controversial ending to the show over the years, and one of its stars is now offering new insight into the fiery finale.
Inspired by the Laura Ingalls Wilder book series, Little House on the Prairie was a family-friendly series that followed the members of a farm family in the late 1800s. The series premiered on NBC in 1974, and it would ultimately last nine seasons before ending its story with the TV special Little House:The Last Farewell in 1984. Yellowstone has become an epic, of sorts, for the modern world of television that brought back Westerns in style. The series helped reform the outdated genre by placing it in a politically charged society of corrupt bureaucrats, crooked law enforcement officials, and evil businessmen who care about nothing other than profit.

Heart Eyes director Josh Ruben may be a horror filmmaker, but nothing could’ve prepared him for the waking nightmare he experienced last month.
On Jan. 7, just weeks before Ruben and his wife Lauren Sick were slated to move into their dream home in Altadena, they watched along in horror as the Eaton Fire headed straight for their new neighborhood in Los Angeles County. While they assumed the worst when their security camera cut to black, Ruben and Sick received confirmation on Jan. 9 that their vacant home was gone. Immediately, friends and collaborators like Mark Duplass, Jordana Brewster and Christopher Landon came to their aid and rallied wider support from the general public, raising nearly $75,000 to get the beloved filmmaking couple back on their feet.
In the process, Ruben also overcame two of the most common fears a person can have: asking for help and accepting it.

Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. This article contains some spoilers for "Heart Eyes."
The filmmaking team behind the new Valentine's Day-set slasher movie "Heart Eyes" seems to be rallying around their film with a particular spin on the "see it in theaters!" agenda. Namely, that new horror movie icons cannot be born if no one goes to see them when they're brand new. While this is unimpeachably true, it feels important to point out at least one of the reasons why horror fans — traditionally a very loyal and easy-to-please group — have not shown up for one of the several attempts at creating a new horror icon over the last decade and change. While some have not been given a fair shake at all, others have either had a pretty lackluster start, been too singular to franchise (I don't think we'll be seeing "Skinamarink V: The Skinamarinking" anytime soon), arrived too late (the eventual "Thanksgiving" movie...

The filmmakers behind Freaky, Happy Death Day and Werewolves Within have ensured that no couple is safe this Valentine’s Day with new bloody slasher Heart Eyes.
Screenwriters Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) and Christopher Landon & Michael Kennedy (Freaky) seamlessly marry the slasher and rom-com genres together for one entertaining, gory romp centered around an emoji mask-inspired killer who stalks and hunts couples on the most romantic holiday of the year.
It may come as no surprise that Heart Eyes originated from a date gone wrong. Great chemistry in a Zoom chat didn’t translate in person, but it did leave Phillip Murphy with killer inspiration. “I was on my moped, driving home from that date just livid, furious,“ Murphy tells Bloody Disgusting. “I was like, ‘I know there’s something there.‘ I was thinking of a killer coming after us.
