Welcome to this week’s Major League Wrestling review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have some big matches here, so let’s see if they all turned out as well as they should have.

Ever since last winter, when Low Ki nearly ripped the ear off Daga, the King of Mexican Strong Style has been looking for The Professional. Unfortunately for Daga, he didn’t get the revenge he was looking for, thanks to a controversial decision. Both men showed plenty of moxie throughout the contest. But the match came to a close, when Low Ki pushed Daga into the corner, hit a suplex and (all in one motion) was able to get his feet on the ropes and turnbuckles to generate enough leverage to (illegally) secure the pinfall. Match #1: The Briscoes beat Coast 2 Coast – Ring Of Honor World Tag Team Titles Match My Take: 3.5 out of 5

This was a much slower match than you would have expected from these two teams, but the action was structured properly and felt like a real competition, rather than a stunt show, so it was worth the viewing. C2C has had a quiet year of success, high-lighted by their undefeated streak, which I barely noticed, at all. C2C is a really good team in this match, with fluid tag work that is reminiscent of the Motor City Machine Guns at their peak.

Match #1: Kenny King beat Jushin Liger

My Take: 3 out of 5

This was a good match that was booked to establish King as a heel, or at least getting closer to it. The action was good but the crowd didn’t seem to care. The crowd became a bit of a problem all night, by the way. Over-all, this was a good opener.

Match #2: The Briscoes (Jay and Mark) beat So-Cal Uncensored (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) – Ring of Honor Tag Team Titles Match

Earlier today, New Japan Pro Wrestling announced the return of the Super J Cup tournament after a seven-year absence. The reintroduction of the classic event can only be seen as a response to WWE’s upcoming Global Cruiserweight Series tournament.

First held in 1994, the Super J Cup is traditionally a one-night, single elimination tournament involving the best junior heavyweights from New Japan and a variety of affiliated promotions. The inaugural event was won by Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) and is widely considered one of the best wrestling shows in history. Since that time, there have been four subsequent Super J Cups, with the legendary Jushin Liger winning in 1995 and 2000, and current Noah star Naomichi Marufuji winning in 2004 and 2009.

The president of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s parent company has commented on WWE wanting to add New Japan matches to WWE Network.

“One proposed idea would be for the WWE to show Njpw footage [on the Network], but this type of proposal just shows that they don’t see us as competition,” Takaaki Kidani wrote in a column on his Bushiroad website.

Bushiroad is New Japan’s parent company. It sounds like Kidani was commenting on rumours that WWE and New Japan have been having business conversations. Unsurprisingly, he isn’t keen on allowing his content to feature on WWE’s Network. “Play Njpw footage on the Network, see if any of our wrestlers gain popularity, then buy that wrestler out; that’s probably the extent of their thoughts on it. It’s a very obvious strategy.”

As a revered legend known the world over, Jushin Liger brings a degree of legitimacy and fan curiosity wherever he goes. His appearance at Nxt TakeOver: Brooklyn was one such occasion, as his inherent drawing power doubtless helped the show. At first, it was thought that this would be his only appearance, however, that might not be true after all.

According to recent reports, Jushin’ Thunder Liger might not be done with WWE. It is alleged that he might be working more dates for the Nxt brand going forward, with some allegations that he might be doing both regular tapings and special events.

If this is true, then it’s a golden opportunity for Nxt to further expand on TakeOver: Brooklyn’s success. Liger can be used in a myriad different ways, teaming up with a regular Nxt superstar, or feuding with one of its stars in singles competition.

With SummerSlam and Nxt TakeOver: Brooklyn in the books, which of the two shows came out on top? SummerSlam definitely had its moments with The New Day winning the tag title, Cesaro/Owens, Jon Stewart costing John Cena his title and the controversial ending to Undertaker/Lesnar, but the show as a whole was fairly average. WWE has trouble filling a 3-hour Raw with intriguing entertainment, so how could they do any better with a 4 hour show?

Well, they couldn’t.

Nxt TakeOver: Brooklyn was a compact ball of energy that rarely let up. From Jushin Liger cracking jokes at Tyler Breeze’s expense to The Vaudevillians capturing the tag team titles for the first time, the entire undercard thoroughly entertained.

Even the arena was more interesting to look at; slight changes to the lighting and use of video boards helped make the product “feel” different.

Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger is coming to WWE! Well, more specifically Nxt, but still, this is major news for a variety of reasons. Liger will wrestle Tiger Breeze on Nxt’s show at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn on August 22nd. It will be the masked man’s first ever WWE match.

What took him so long to get there?

Well, while WWE was half-heartedly presenting its light heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions, Liger was wowing audiences the world over with his innovative blend of lucha libre inspired high flying and Japanese submission and strike-based offense, becoming one of the best wrestlers in the world as he went.

Word Championship Wrestling came into existence after Ted Turner purchased Jim Crockett Promotions’ Nwa-affiliated pro wrestling territory (which was airing on TBS) on October 11, 1988. In this being the case, coming up with a list of “greatest matches in WCW history starts with anything televised by the promotion from the October 15, 1988 airing of “World Championship Wrestling” on TBS to the final Monday Nitro on March 26, 2001. Since WWE purchased WCW and the vast video library that came along with it, there have been numerous releases devoted to WCW related content, from the Goldberg set, to the Best of Nitro stuff, down to the Nwo release, but this is the first time WWE has taken a look at the best matches from the rich history of WCW’s Pay-Per-View’s. This question is pretty straight forward but I will give just a brief explanation anyway. Who, during any era of WWE should have been World Champion and why? Obviously they have to have never been WWE champ before. There are many great choices and this is a list of ten people I belive should have had their names written in the history books with the likes of Buddy Rodgers, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, etc.

I’ll preface this saying these are obviously just my opinions, and I’m sure plenty will disagree. And I also mean no disrespect to any wrestlers; if I mention anything perceived as “negative”, it’s simply trying to rationalize why on earth they would never have won a world title.
