Deadline reports that Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) president Bill Kramer sent a letter to Academy members to confirm that the nominations' ceremony will be moved. Originally set for next Friday (Jan. 17), the 2025 Oscar nominees will now be announced next Sunday (Jan. 19). “We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you,” Kramer wrote.

As the highly destructive wildfires continue to devastate the Los Angeles area, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has sent a letter to its members to inform them of new developments. The voting period has been extended by two days, which has also pushed the announcement of the Academy Award nominations back by several days. The nominations will now be announced on January 19th.

The letter from CEO Bill Kramer reads: “Dear Academy members, We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you. Given the fire situation, we want to share some updates regarding an extension to the Oscars nominations voting window as well as updated information on Oscars Shortlist Screenings, Oscars Bake-Offs, and the Academy Museum.

The hit '90s sitcom "Seinfeld" was ostensibly about a fictionalized version of comedian Jerry Seinfeld (played by himself), but in reality, it was about one of the most deeply dysfunctional friend groups in television history. At the beginning of the "Seinfeld" episode "The Parking Garage", Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Kramer (Michael Richards), Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld), and George (Jason Alexander) have just completed a trip to a shopping mall in New Jersey. Elaine has purchased a few pet goldfish and carries them in a plastic baggie. More inconveniently, Kramer has just purchased an outside, window-mounted air conditioning unit, which he insists on awkwardly carrying back to the car in spite of its heaviness.

The main issue of the episode: no one can remember where they parked. The bulk of this misadventure takes place in the parking garage as the quartet becomes increasingly frustrated with their plight. Jerry has to pee, and doesn't want to walk all the way back to the mall to find a bathroom, leading to an awkward situation when he tries to whizz in a corner. The same then happens to George. Both are caught by a security guard.

Many of the best television series of all time toe the line between nuanced social and political commentary, often using less-than-perfect characters or situations as foils to get across some sort of theme. From classic sitcoms like All in the Family to new series like Black-ish, many of television's best works create delicate conflicts in order to tell a compelling story.

But even some of the best television series of all time step over the line sometimes, marking a nearly perfect series with an episode that fans would be happy to forget. Though these series are typically flawless in their ability to tell compelling stories and use uncomfortable situations to get across powerful themes, the creators occasionally failed to write the story in a balanced way and were left with some problematic episodes.

The Motion Picture Academy has reached out to its members to assure them that AMPAS is still committed to its work in collection and film preservation, even amid the recent layoffs that impacted its library and archival staff.

Late last month, AMPAS let go of 16 staffers, including 14 from the Academy Film Archive and Margaret Herrick Library. Among those let go was Mike Pogorzelski, the head of the film archive. The restructuring sparked some outcry, including a petition from a film preservation group called Missing Movies demanding the staffers be re-hired, as well as the cancellation of an event for Home Movie Day that was meant to take place at the Academy Museum later this month.

It all began when New York sports radio station Wfan host Chris McMonigle recently raised the subject of Seinfeld while discussing the NBA. The league’s color-coded regular season tournament courts have been somewhat controversial, with a number of fans comparing the look of the red Chicago Bulls court to the neon sign from Kenny Rogers Roasters. You know, the one that messes up Kramer’s rods and cones.

The episode, “The Chicken Roaster,” had already spawned countless memes, thanks to that blazing red chicken sign’s effect on Kramer’s apartment.

Today the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has sent a letter to its membership clarifying recent staffing changes across their collections and preservation teams at the Academy archive, museum, and library. The independent filmmaking community is up in arms over the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ recent decision to gut its archive and library, with some calling the cutbacks “a huge step backwards” and “disastrous” as they put pressure on the Academy to reconsider its decision.

On Oct. 30, AMPAS laid off 16 employees, roughly 2% of its total workforce. They were from the Academy Film Archive, which is responsible for the preservation, restoration and documentation of motion pictures, and the Margaret Herrick Library, home to millions of pieces of film history, from books to photographs to concept art to Oscar facts and more. The affected employees included archive director Mike Pogorzelski, preservation officer Josef Lindner and head of cataloguing Mike Brostoff, among others — many of whom have worked there for decades.

At the time of the layoffs, Academy CEO Bill Kramer characterized the staff cuts as part of a larger organizational restructuring.

Live television event producer Raj Kapoor returns as executive producer and showrunner, Katy Mullan as executive producer, and Hamish Hamilton as director of the 97th Oscars, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang said Monday. These days, every time I see a relatable, character-driven comedy about actual human beings I think, “Wow they sure don’t make ’em like this anymore.” It is like a shock to the system that someone managed to get one made and released. It makes me sad since this was once a popular genre with with major studios regularly filled theaters. For the first time in its 51-year history, the Student Academy Awards ceremony is taking place outside Los Angeles and will occur at London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on Monday evening (October 14).

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Jonathan Majors has been found guilty of assault and harassment regarding a domestic incident involving his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari back in March.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Majors was convicted by a New York judge on Dec. 18 for third-degree reckless assault and harassment following a four-hour deliberation by a six-person jury over three days. Accompanied by his attorneys and family, as well as fellow actor and girlfriend Meagan Good, Majors was informed that his sentencing hearing will be on Feb. 6, 2024. Majors faces up to one year in prison for the charges. However, Majors was found not guilty of two other charges stemming from the incident with Jabbari as he was deemed innocent of third-degree intentional assault and second-degree aggravated harassment.
