Box Office: ‘Sonic 3’ Tracking to Beat ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ as Christmas Week Kicks Off
Image
The year-end holiday marquee isn’t as crowded this year as it usually is, and there’s no Star Wars or Avatar, but Hollywood studios believe there’s still enough merriment to be had at the box office.

The action officially gets underway Dec. 20 when Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King debut at the domestic office. Both films are rated PG, a huge advantage in terms of attracting families.

Sonic — which has become a marquee franchise for Paramount and videogame maker Sega — is widely expected to top the weekend with a three-day launch of $60 million (exhibitors believe it has a shot at $70 million), followed by Mufasa with $50 million. Both films also launch overseas.

The Christmas corridor is the most unusual time of the year at the box office. That’s because every day can be like a Saturday or Sunday through New Year’s Day,...

Ivan Sen in Toomelah (2011)
Limbo Review: The Ghosts of the Past Linger in Ivan Sen’s Incisive Anti-Detective Noir
Ivan Sen in Toomelah (2011)
In writer-director Ivan Sen’s incisive anti-detective film Limbo, Travis Hurley’s (Simon Baker) job isn’t to solve the murder of an Aboriginal girl. It’s to determine whether or not to reopen the cold case in the Australian outback mining town of Limbo—or, rather, to determine whether some other detective should even attempt to crack it.

Travis’s investigation certainly doesn’t get off to an auspicious start. After checking into a motel and shooting up, he tracks down the victim’s brother, Charlie (Rob Collins) and sister, Emma (Natasha Wanganeen). Having little reason to trust a “whitefella” cop, both refuse to speak with him. Travis is ready to pack it in when a computerized component is boosted from his car. He finds himself stuck in Limbo while he waits for the replacement part to ship.

That the investigation proceeds only because Travis is forced to wait...

Official Trailer for Australian Indie Crime Thriller 'Limbo' from Ivan Sen
Image
"As hard boiled as the ground is hard-baked." Madman Films in Australia has released an official trailer for an indie crime thriller titled Limbo, from filmmaker Ivan Sen. This initially premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year in the Main Competition section, but it didn't win any awards; it also played at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this summer. In a small Australian outback town Travis Hurley, a detective, arrives to review a 20-year-old unsolved homicide of a young Indigenous girl. Travis discovers a collection of unpleasant truths hiding around this dusty town, highlighting the intricacies of loss and injustice faced by Indigenous Australians. Limbo is an Australian indie mystery-crime film directed by Ivan Sen, starring Simon Baker, Rob Collins, Natasha Wanganeen, and Nicholas Hope. This is a very sleek dialogue-free trailer, relying entirely on critics' quotes and the vivid B&w images to sell this film. This tricky...

Seamus Murphy’s ‘Henry Needs a New Home’ Is a Farcical Tale of One Man’s Battle With a Metallic Antagonist
Image
Modern day life may have seen the majority of us packed into cities, on top of each other, paying eye-wateringly expensive prices to live in ticky-tacky boxes but perhaps none to quite the same degree as the man and his dog in Seamus Murphy’s Henry Needs a New Home. A delightfully absurd short which was born of the Australian filmmaker’s own feelings of claustrophobia and disillusionment with overpriced accommodation. The film takes us on an absurdist, yet completely relatable journey through one man’s feelings of despair and eventual total disillusionment towards his life and living situation, ultimately forcing him to face the terrifying abyss of dealing with loss before gathering the determination to make a change and pick himself back up. Alongside pulling on your heartstrings Henry Needs a New Home delights with its considered and playful production design and frenetic montages depicting the chaos faced by our beleaguered protagonist.

Berlin Review: Simon Baker In ‘Limbo’
Image
Odd people turn up in deserts. People are also inclined to disappear. A strange moonscape of opal prospectors’ digs and slurry heaps helps to set a bleak mood in Australian filmmaker Ivan Sen’s Limbo, shot in gently faded black and white in the South Australian mining town of Coober Pedy, repurposed here as Limbo. Limbo, says the preacher whose radio show seems to be the only thing available on the local airwaves, is the edge of hell. Here, unpurged sinners may be “in friendship with God.” Damnation, however, isn’t far away.

Visiting detective Travis (Simon Baker) doesn’t seem to be in friendship with anyone. Baker, an Australian actor familiar as a suave presence in The Mentalist and other U.S. series, carries himself here as if he had spent his entire life facing a dusty headwind; he sinks into the role to become unrecognizable. When Travis checks into Limbo Hotel – which,...

The Drover's Wife Trailer Reimagines The Legend of Molly Johnson
Image
The trailer for The Drover's Wife is promising a fascinating period drama, reimagining the classic short story penned by Henry Lawson into a thrilling adventure. Henry Lawson's tale was about a woman's struggles to keep her family safe. The woman fights against a snake that has been dwelling through her house as she figures out a way to keep it away from her children.

The snake was a representation of all the issues a single mother living in isolation must go through. The Drover's Wife big screen adaptation reimagines those struggles in the form of turmoil with local authorities, a convict at loose, and suspected foul play against the lady's husband.

Set in 1893 Australia, the film chronicles the life of Molly Johnson. Her husband is a drover, who is out with the livestock for six months. Molly is expecting her fourth kid and is now in charge of the household,...

Retrospective: Bad Boy Bubby
Image
Trigger Warning: This article contains several references to animal cruelty during shooting.

In the summer of 1994, Forrest Gump was released in the United States to wide acclaim, becoming the fourth highest grossing film at that time and winning six Oscars, including Best Picture. Roger Ebert wrote, ‘I’ve never met anyone like Forrest Gump in a movie before, and for that matter I’ve never seen a movie quite like Forrest Gump.’ It is curious to read that from Ebert, because just ten months prior in September 1993, a film called Bad Boy Bubby was shown at the Venice Film Festival.

Put simply, Bad Boy Bubby is Forrest Gump on bath salts, imbued with pitch-black humour instead of sickly treacle. While Gump opens in a leafy Savannah park to Alan Silvestri’s melodic score, Bubby begins in a hellish room with no natural light and filthy grey walls, which is...

The award of Best Short Form Series will be presented during the festival’s closing ceremony on April 1.

George Pullar.

George Pullar and newcomer Ashlyn Louden-Gamble have won the lead roles in Moon Rock for Monday, a coming-of-age road movie from first-time writer-director Kurt Martin.

Pullar, whose star is on the rise after roles in Fighting Season, Playing for Keeps and A Place to Call Home, will play homeless teenager Tyler.

Tyler is on the run from the cops when he meets Monday (Louden-Gamble), a terminally ill 11-year-old, at a train station. Forming an unlikely bond, they embark on a road trip across the country in search of a moon rock which Monday believes will heal her. The pair is pursued by the police who believe Tyler has kidnapped the girl.

Jim Robison, who formed Lunar Pictures after an affable split from Blake Northfield’s Bronte Pictures, will produce. Shooting is due to start in Sydney and Coober Pedy on August 26, funded by private investors and the Producer Offset.

Kodie Bedford takes the ‘Mystery Road’ to success
Kodie Bedford.

When Kodie Bedford sets out to create a project or is offered a writing gig, she looks for three elements: Strong female characters, a regional setting which harks back to her childhood in country Wa, and a genre piece.

So far everything the Indigenous writer has accomplished in her burgeoning career has ticked all three boxes, with credits on Grace Beside Me, Robbie Hood and Mystery Road as well as the horror short Scout, which marks her directing debut.

“I pinch myself every day as I get to tell stories; I am living the dream,” she tells If. She turned to screenwriting after working as a cadet journalist for Sbs before moving to the ABC as a researcher on documentary series Message Sticks.

A graduate of the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Communications and a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Technology, Sydney,...

‘The Coming Back Out Ball Movie’, ‘The School’ resonate beyond Oz cinemas
‘The Coming Back Out Ball Movie.’

The final two Australian films released theatrically this year, Storm Ashwood’s The School and Sue Thomson’s The Coming Back Out Ball Movie have two things in common with numerous other Oz titles.

The Backlot Films launched both films on a handful of screens with minimal marketing – but the producers see the modest grosses as only a small part of the overall picture, alongside qualifying for the Producer Offset, overseas sales and festival exposure. Moreover, The Coming Back Out Ball Movie is expected to have a reasonably long life outside commercial cinemas.

Ashwood’s debut feature, a supernatural thriller which stars Megan Drury, Nicholas Hope, Will MacDonald, Texas Watterston and Milly Alcock, had a multi-platform release in the Us in October via Vertical Entertainment. Cinema Management Group has sold the title to more than 20 markets including Germany, Korea and Japan.

‘Backtrack Boys’ and ‘Book Week’ launch in cinemas
‘Backtrack Boys.’

Russell Crowe last week urged his 2.73 million Twitter followers to see Backtrack Boys in cinemas, lauding Catherine Scott’s feature documentary as really special and a great story.

A reasonable number of Crowe’s followers did so as Umbrella Entertainment launched the film as an alternate content release, which means exhibitors have the flexibility to run limited sessions.

Meanwhile writer-director Heath Davis’ drama Book Week began its staggered roll-out on eight screens via Bonsai Films.

Backtrack Boys examines a youth program run by rule-breaking jackaroo Bernie Shakeshaft (hailed by Crowe as a “good fella and a bit of a genius”) on the outskirts of Armidale Nsw. Voted as the top feature documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the film collected $24,000 from one session on Saturday and Sunday on 44 screens, and $56,000 including festival screenings.

This opens theatrically in Australia on Thursday.

It’s really special.

Go and see it.

First Look: Sony Classics Dates 'Truth' in Oscary October Slot
Just the other day a reader alerted me to a report at BoxOffice.com that Sony Classics had dated James Vanderbilt's Truth for an Oct. 16 release. It seemed odd in that a) the film hadn't been announced for either Venice or Toronto; b) we hadn't seen a trailer or promotional still; c) Sony Classics didn't have the film even listed on their press site; and d) one would expect all these things given the awards buzz surrounding star Cate Blanchett in the role of Mary Mapes. As it turns out, the report was accurate, the film will arrive in October and we also have the first look at Blanchett and Robert Redford in the upcoming film. Of course, there's a bit of decision-making to be had when it comes to Blanchett as she is also looked at as a top contender for Best Actress for her role in Carol.

Redd Inc. Signs Termination Papers for the Overworked: A Movie Review
*there are spoilers here. Director: Daniel Krige. Writers: Jonathon Green and Anthony O'Connor. Cast: Nicholas Hope, Kelly Paterniti, Sam Reid, Alan Dukes, James Mackay, and Hayley McElhinney. Redd Inc. is an Australian shot horror film, which was originally titled Inhuman Resources. This is truly an independent film, that was partially financed through crowd funding. Redd Inc. is also a tale of an office worker's worst nightmare. Thomas Reddmann keeps his five workers literally chained to their desks, while needling them to work harder. Shot primarily on one location, Redd Inc. can sometimes look drab, but the film's characterizations and especially the lead villain create for an exceptionally good time. Thomas Reddmann is accused of several axe-murders. Reddmann was able to escape the local mental rehabilitation unit, after he is found guilty. He puts his time to good use. Soon, Reddmann has abducted five characters, each of whom are involved in his case.

Nicholas Hope on fame
Eighteen years after the release of Rolf de Heer.s cult classic Bad Boy Bubby, the name Nicholas Hope is still associated with the image of the agoraphobic 35-year-old with bush-like hair, walking tentatively at midnight in Adelaide with his large suitcase. His performance won Hope the AFI Best Actor award in 1994. It also introduced him into a world of celebrity, where fame is not always as intoxicating as it seems.

Constantly being recognized as Bubby used to bother Hope. But now it seems to have become something positive.

.It is a performance and film I.m very proud of. I think for a period of time it held me back so no people could see me outside of that role, but now people can. So now this role just complements anything else..

Hope recalls the day when he was watching Argo, which stars Bryan Cranston. He thought to himself,...

Bad Boy Bubby actor Nicholas Hope: distributors are scared to back brave Australian films
Nicholas Hope in Bad Boy Bubby

Nicholas Hope, who played the lead role in Australian cult classic Bad Boy Bubby, has said that film distributors are “frightened” to back “brave” Australian films.

Hope told Encore: “There are Australian film-makers out there who are doing daring things. It’s difficult to say if they are being brave enough. The one thing holding them back is distribution.”

“There are brave films out there that just can’t get cinema release,” he said.

Hope named Bad Boy Bubby in his list of the three bravest Australian films ever made, along with Chopper and Wake in Fright.

“Distributors are frightened of taking on another local film. So it’s very difficult for indie films, which don’t have large budgets and aren’t presented in a certain way, to find an audience.”

In the year Bad Boy Bubby was released, in 1993, the Rolf de Heer...

Butterflies: a short, stop-motion classic
Director Isabel Peppard stands out from the crowd. She has even garnered the attention of director Tim Burton. He spotted her in costume at the opening of his recent exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Acmi). Peppard was there with Adam Elliot who she worked with on Mary and Max.

.I scammed my way in - that.s another story - but I made this crazy headdress out of bones, with big ribcages on the sides, specially for that exhibition. I thought at the opening there would be a lot of people dressed up but because it was exclusive there were a lot of mayors and CEOs..

During the short time Burton was in Melbourne, they were able to catch up for drinks three times. .He was really nice, really down to earth,. Peppard says of the filmmaker, whose latest stop-motion feature Frankenweenie was just released.

Peppard...

Movie Review: Redd Inc. (aka Inhuman Resources)
By Marcey Papandrea, MoreHorror.com

While looking back at my viewing for this year, I have seen a lot of genre films, and actually I have seen a lot of really good ones. I had been surprised quite a lot this year, and I wasn’t sure if anything else this could do that. I was proved wrong with Redd Inc. (Inhuman Resources is the Us title), not only did this film surprise me, but also it is one of the best genre films I have seen this year. This is a great film, not just a great genre film, there is so much to enjoy and embrace here.

Our storyline here is very intriguing, with a setting that is very brave and it works like a charm. Six people wake up chained in an office, to desks by a man named Thomas Reddmann (Nicholas Hope), an escaped killer. His...

Saw Meets The Office in Redd Inc. - See the Trailer Now!
Sure, "The Office" isn't the same since Steve Carell left, but the Nard-Dog doesn't make that bad of a boss. And as much of a douche as he was as the boss of Initech in Office Space, Bill Lumbergh was more annoying than anything else. But Thomas Reddmann, now that's a bad boss.

Green Light Productions has released the eagerly anticipated trailer for Redd Inc., a film that draws inspiration from the early Saw films but incorporates them in a new environment. And did we mention that master of horror Tom Savini appears not only in the film but on the FX team as well? Nice!

Coming at us from Down Under, Redd Inc. stars Nicholas Hope in the role of the diabolical Reddmann. Kelly Paterniti, Hayley McElhinney, and Sebastian Reid co-star alongside Daniel Krige, who also directed. The film was written by Jonathon Green and Anthony O'Connor.

Check out the trailer below.

Tom Savini Returns to the Horror Arena with Two New Films
by Tim Mathis, MoreHorror.com

Tom Savini is returns to horror! Yep, that's right folks. If.com and DreadCentral.com are reporting that after close to what's been a decade, horror FX and acting legend Tom Savini (responsible for creating special effects and makeup for such classics as Friday the 13th and George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead) is coming out of retirement on the makeup and FX end to hammer away at two new Australian horror movies. Nick Nicolaou's Mary Doe and Daniel Krige's Redd Inc.

Redd Inc. is a horror revenge tale that follows Annabelle – a burlesque webcam stripper. She gets abducted and ends up chained to a desk with five others in a macabre, horrific make-shift office. Their self-appointed “boss” is escaped, wrongly-convicted serial killer Thomas Reddmann, aka Redd, demented from experimental, behavior modification treatment. He requires Annabelle...

Tom Savini Paints the Screen Red for Two Aussie Films
Tom Savini got his start in the film business by creating some of the greatest F/X work horror movie fans have ever seen. As his career expanded, he left behind the latex and Karo syrup and began creating characters in a different manner ... by portraying them on screen. While that's cool and we love some of Tom's characters, we've been hungry for him to get back to F/X work. Speaking of which ...

Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead - has come out of retirement on makeup and effects to get his hands dirty on two new Australian horror films - Nick Nicolaou's Mary Doe and Daniel Krige's Redd Inc....

Savini Back in the FX Game for Two Australian Flicks
An article for an Australian news outlet has revealed that Tom Savini came out of retirement to assist and supervise FX on two upcoming films: Redd, Inc. and Mary Doe . The former, directed by Daniel Krige, takes today's popular "strangers trapped in a single location" scenario, except this time it's strangers (led by an abducted web cam model) who wind up in an office and are subjected to sundry cruelty from a wrongly-convicted serial killer. Nicholas Hope plays the lead baddie against actress Kelly Paterniti. Savini has a cameo. Mary Doe , meanwhile, is seeking funds and aims to roll soon under the direction of Nick Nicolaou. That film is a zombie tale.

What Dogtooth's parents learned from Footloose
Steve Rose on Hollywood's pushiest mums and dads

No wonder Greece is in economic crisis. Family life is plumbing drastic new levels of wrongness over there, if surreal new Greek drama Dogtooth is anything to go by (which, admittedly, it really isn't). The film's parents never let their three teenage kids beyond the walled garden of their isolated villa. And for good measure, they home-school them with surreal lies about the world outside – cats are vicious maneaters, a zombie is a type of yellow flower, aeroplanes are actually little toys. It can't end well, but is the rest of the world any better? Overprotective parent syndrome is never far away in the movies, once your mummy lets you look around.

Meet The Parents

He's technically on the right side of the law, but there's a glint of Travis Bickle in Robert De Niro's twitchy ex-cia dad, who both covets...
