Exclusive: Sierra McCormick (American Horror Stories), Tony Todd (Candyman), Katie Sarife (Annabelle Comes Home), Gina Hiraizumi (Doom Patrol), Emmy nominee Morgan Fairchild (Murphy Brown) and Nicky Whelan (The Binge) have boarded Robin Givens’ mockumentary-style comedy, The Nana Project. They join an ensemble that also includes Oscar and Golden Globe winner Mercedes Ruehl, Nolan Gould and Will Peltz, as previously announced.

Set primarily at Timeless Acres Retirement Home, the film follows a documentary crew who develop an interest in one of its star residents—feisty chess master Helen “Nana” Lewis (Ruehl). With the help of her friends Jennifer (Whelan), Francesca (Fairchild), Jack (Todd), Esther (Tilton), Kitty (Beth Broderick), Gladys (Margaret Avery) and Lisa (Hiraizumi), Nana begins training for an upcoming chess tournament. She plans on dominating the competition but her real plan involves reuniting her estranged grandsons, Andrew (Gould), a dedicated veterinary student, and Cody (Peltz), a flashy male model and influencer.

HBO Max has released a teaser for Season 3 of Doom Patrol, and… y’all have fun now making heads or tails of it!

Premiering Thursday, Sept. 23 (with the first three episodes, followed by weekly releases), Season 3 opens on the culmination of Dorothy’s (Abi Monterey) confrontation with the Candlemaker, which leads to a devastating loss. The Doom Patrol then finds themselves at a difficult crossroads, with each member struggling to face who they are and who they want to be. And things get a whole lot more complicated when Madame Rouge (played by Michelle Gomez) arrives in a time machine with a very specific mission…...

Doom Patrol in Season 3 will introduce both its version of the Brotherhood of Dada as well as the Dead Boy Detective Agency, cutting deep as it does with the more arcane comic book fodder.

The Sisterhood of Dada, as it will be known on the HBO Max original, is comprised of Malcolm (played by onetime Flash guest star Micah Joe Parker), a quiet, sensitive and thoughtful soul who would often rather be invisible than face this unforgiving world; Shelley Byron aka The Fog (Agent Carter‘s scene-stealing Wynn Everett), a charming, seductive and poetic alleged terrorist; Lloyd Jefferson aka Frenzy...

Micah Joe Parker, Wynn Everett, Miles Mussenden, Anita Kalathara and Gina Hiraizumi will join the cast of HBO Max’s Doom Patrol in recurring roles.

The recurring quintet adds to the season 3 cast, which features Michelle Gomez, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby and Matt Bomer. In Doom Patrol, the ragtag group consists of superhero outcasts Cliff Steele aka Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Larry Trainor aka Negative Man (Bomer), Jane aka Crazy Jane (Guerrero), Rita Farr aka Elasti-Woman (Bowlby), and Victor Stone aka Cyborg (Joivan Wade). All of them have experienced trauma that gave them their special abilities, but with the guidance of The Chief (Timothy Dalton), they come together to help investigate phenomena as unique as them. When The Chief disappears, they spring into action when Cyborg presents them with a mission they can’t refuse.

Madalyn Horcher, Ty Tennant and Sebastian Croft will guest star in the third season.

Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is launching a new industry event focusing on Africa. The Southern Africa-Locarno Industry Academy, hosted in collaboration with the Realness Institute of Africa, will take place online from 26 September to 2 October 2021 and will welcome 10-12 participants from all over the African continent. The project offers a tailored program featuring masterclasses and meetings with internationally established professionals. The aim is to enhance participants’ understanding of the challenges facing the film industry, while allowing them to expand their personal network of contacts and develop their professional skill set. “The Southern Africa-Locarno Industry Academy will allow us to introduce our program for young professionals in this region. Participants will be able to connect with Industry Academy alumni in Latin America, the Middle East, the USA and Europe, joining an international network of future industry players,” said Markus Duffner, the new head of Locarno Pro.

Lifetime Movie Network (Lmn) has set 13 thrillers to debut in early 2021, including five new “The Wrong” franchise movies starring Vivica A. Fox, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The new installments include “The Wrong Real Estate Agent,” “The Wrong Fiancé,” “The Wrong Mr. Right,” “The Wrong Prince Charming” and “The Wrong Valentine,” with the latter one marking the channel’s 25th “Wrong” movie, all of which have starred and been executive produced by Fox.

Below, see the full slate of new movies rolling out January-March on Friday nights on Lifetime’s sister network Lmn. The lineup includes Fox’s five “Wrong” movies, as well as projects starring Eric Roberts, Tracy Nelson, Samaire Armstrong, Anna Marie Dobson, Michael Pare, Tom Sandoval, Jessica Morris, Jason Shane Scott and Michael Madsen.

Brotherhood Studios has released an official trailer for an indie action film titled Last Three Days, a mysterious sort-of-sci-fi crime drama starring Robert Palmer Watkins. This is being released direct-to-vod without any other premiere before, and it looks like straight-to-bargain-bin mediocre. Mixed up with a dangerous crime syndicate, an undercover cop wakes up to find he's missing his partner, his wife, and the last three days of his life. What caused this and where did they go? Caught in the middle of police corruption, hunted by the syndicate, and unable to trust his own perception of reality, Jack must race against time to save the life he's lost. Also starring Thomas Wilson Brown, Deborah Lee Smith, Roy Huang, Gina Hiraizumi, Clint Jung, and Holly Hawkins. Some grudges never die. I should know, too, cause I just sat through the first trailer for Truth or Double Dare, which pushes this point home with bloody conviction. If you like to mix your scares with a touch of class, then this horror thriller was tailor made for you.

“Grey’s Anatomy” star Chandra Wilson has joined the romantic musical “Christmas Harmony” with Kelley Jakle, Sally Struthers, Lee Garlington, and vocalist/guitarist Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek, Variety has learned exclusively.

The production is currently shooting in Los Angeles and marks writer-director Nanea Miyata’s feature film debut. June Street Studios is the production company.

Jakle, who played Jessica Smith in the three “Pitch Perfect” movies, stars as a young woman who returns to her small hometown to rediscover music, family bonds, and the magic of the Christmas season. The feature includes five original songs co-written by Miyata and Justin Jones, and an additional song co-written with Richard Rudolph.
