Gaup turned down offers to direct Nunca sem Minha Filha (1991) with Sally Field, RoboCop: O Policial do Futuro (1987) and many others. He began to direct Waterworld: O Segredo das Águas (1995), but he thought the budget was blown up and the project too difficult to handle.

Originally wanted to be an athlete when he was young and especially showed a talent for ski-jumping.
