10 Movies You Don’t Realize Are Westerns At First
Image
The Western is undoubtedly one of the great foundational genres in the history of cinema. As such, its influence goes beyond Western movies proper — be they classic Western movies from the 1950s and 1960s or modern neo-Westerns — and spreads to all other genres, shaping the way certain scenes are shot or how particular Western genre tropes are used in developing plots.

Some Western-adjacent movies are easier to spot than others, neo-Westerns especially because while they rework some of the genre's most frequent tropes, they're usually still set in the American West and generally feel very Western. Other movies, however, simply pick and choose some Western elements to weave into their stories that might be surprising to audiences when pointed out. However, all have the potential to delight and move audiences with how they twist and remake the recurring themes of the Western genre, to say something more about the modern day.

Since then, she’s been a staple in both indie films, TV shows and everything in between. In the last few years, she’s shifted from playing supporting roles to leading films, with her first lead performance,...

Sebastian Maniscalco Admits His Stand-Up Comedy Persona Creeps Into ‘Bookie’ — the Show’s Producers Don’t Mind
Image
Every once in a while, Sebastian Maniscalco’s stand-up persona creeps into his performance on Max’s “Bookie.” But rather than ask him to tone it down, executive producers Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay welcome the occasional slip.

“He bailed us out,” Bakay says of an upcoming episode of “Bookie,” which returns to Max with ten more episodes for Season 2, rolling out weekly starting Thursday, Dec. 12. “Sometimes we’ll ask for it when we’re in trouble. We’ll be like, ‘hey buddy, we got nothing here!’”

Fans of Maniscalco’s standup know what Bakay is talking about: Whenever he’s ready to make a point, the stand-up star will pause, throw on a thicker swagger and exaggerate the syllables in a certain word or phrase for comedic effect.

And he admits to it popping up on camera: “Sometimes the stage Sebastian comes out a little bit,” says Maniscalco, who...

Sebastian Maniscalco’s ‘Bookie’ Is a Good Reminder of Why the Antihero Era Ended
Image
Doing business with a man who made billions on child labor and may have murdered a past associate. Jokes about children being sexually abused in the foster system. Extreme and public intimate partner violence played for laughs because both partners are men. Though you might think plotlines like these went extinct circa Entourage and Sons of Anarchy, Bookie is doing its best to revive the antihero era. Sometimes it feels like a charmingly retro throwback; mostly it’s so sweaty and off-putting that it reminds you why they don’t make TV like this anymore.

Bookie, which premiered on Max late last November, was co-created by superstar EP Chuck Lorre and his frequent collaborator Nick Bakay, and wildly successful stand-up comic Sebastian Maniscalco stars as Danny, the titular bookie. Though some lip service is paid to the fact of legalized sports betting and how it could affect Danny’s business,...

Nadine Crocker on Continue, the Movie Raising Money for Suicide Prevention
Image
We spoke with Nadine Crocker leading up to the release of Continue, an emotionally raw drama film that sees the talented writer-director in front of the camera as well, playing the harrowing and complex lead character. "I think the girl who started that journey and thought she could wear 33 hats was, like, very naive, but I'm really happy she was because it was a fun experience," Crocker recently told MovieWeb.

Crocker plays Dean, an emotionally troubled young woman who is already suffering a self-destructive mental health episode as Continue kicks off. The overall story spotlights mental health struggles and suicide prevention, and the finished product was released Sep. 6 at a pertinent time. "[The producers and I] unanimously were like, 'We need to let this film sit for a little bit until we get to September because that's World Suicide Prevention Month,'" Crocker said. "I knew that that was the time to put this film out.

Continue Review: Rocky Passion Project Spotlights Suicide Prevention
Image
Just in time to highlight National Suicide Prevention Month, actress and budding filmmaker Nadine Crocker (Cabin Fever) has put on "33 hats" for her new film, as she recently told us. Yes, she wrote and directed Lionsgate's Continue, in addition to playing the powerful and emotionally charged lead role. You dont even need to do the research to confirm Crockers real-life personal connection to the spellbinding narrative source material here. Its just that palpable, with a raw and vulnerable turn that screams authenticity. As an added bonus, yes, Continue is indeed based on her life and explores her past struggles with suicide and mental health.

Hey, even superhero movies are exploring mental health now and Crocker, who also directed Desperation Road with Mel Gibson not too long ago, shows promise as a helmer of features with this latest passion project. The Oscar-winning stunner Girl, Interrupted might come to mind as...

‘The G’ Review: Grandma Is No Pushover in This Bleakly Effective Revenge Drama
Image
The retribution visited upon exploiters of seniors by June Squibb in current sleeper hit “Thelma” has but Nerf-ball impact compared to the brass-knuckles style of vengeance practiced by Dale Dickey in “The G.” This considerably less cozy tale has the star as a vinegary veteran of hard living who turns out to be very much the wrong person for organized criminals to safely prey upon.

Canadian writer-director Karl R. Hearne’s second feature recalls much 1970s cinema in its emphasis on gritty character detail over suspense mechanics, resulting in an ostensible thriller that’s not very thrilling. Still, its storytelling has the same grim satisfaction that drives its heroine, a woman who’s not particularly ingratiating but is quite capable of doling out punishment to deserving parties.

Known as “the G” to granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis), 72-year-old Ann Hunter is less fondly regarded by others, including in-laws who blame frail...

Fantasia Review: The G Finds Dale Dickey Bringing the Rage
Image
Ann Hunter (Dale Dickey) loves her husband. She’s simply never been the caregiver type. That’s what drew him to her in the first place––leaving his wife to be with someone more his speed in their ruthless, take-no-prisoners attitude. Age comes for everyone, though. And it came for him fast. Unfortunately, they had already moved closer to his son in a place Ann couldn’t stand beyond the ability it afforded her to grow close with his granddaughter Emma (Romane Denis). So she filled the time with cigarettes and alcohol, alienated herself from everyone but the girl, and inevitably found herself being chastised by his doctor for neglecting the care his deteriorating body needs.

Whereas this development would generally give Ann the chance to turn things around or double-down on the self-destruction, Karl R. Hearne’s The G grabs hold and drags her towards a place of vengeance...

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 | Kevin Costner sequel won’t be released in August
Kevin Costner in Dizem por Aí... (2005)
Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.

Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.

Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.

It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.

Them: Covenant Why The "Cat In A Bag" Scene Is So Important, According To The Creators
Image
Them's "Cat in a Bag" scene portrays violence against black people in the 1950s. The scene highlights real-world horrors faced by the Emory family before supernatural encounters. Creators and actors felt the scene was necessary to explore and depict the terror faced by black people.

The following article deals with explicit violence involving minors.

The "cat in a bag" scene from the first season of the horror anthology Them was a shocking inclusion that the creators stand by. Them is a black anthology horror show from Amazon Prime in the vein of American Horror Story, with a new cast of characters each season. The first season, titled Them: Covenant, follows a black family who moves from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in East Compton in the 1950s. Their idyllic life takes a turn for the sinister when their home becomes the focus of evil forces.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 Review
Image
Plot: An epic saga of the various groups who try to settle the ever-expanding horizon of the old West.

Review: Kevin Costner’s Horizon might be the most ambitious movie undertaking since Lord of the Rings. Think about it – Kevin Costner has sunk a huge chunk of his own personal fortune into making an epic Western saga, with a second movie only weeks away from hitting theatres, regardless of whether or not the first makes him any money. If that weren’t enough, he’s already started shooting pieces of the third film, and he’s sworn he’ll be making a fourth film as well. Given the scope of his ambitions, it’s hard to truly judge Horizon – Chapter 1 as a standalone film, with it so clearly part of a much bigger whole.

Running three hours (with credits), Costner, who also directed, produced and co-wrote the film (with Jon Baird...

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 Review: The Most Expensive Trailer For A Sequel Ever Made
Image
In the more than 20 years that have passed since Kevin Costner last stood behind the camera and delivered his third feature as a director, 2003's well-received "Open Range," a lot has changed within the studio system. For one thing, there are fewer independent studios in operation these days compared to the turn of the century, when the very idea of Disney absorbing 20th Century Fox in a hostile takeover or Paramount Pictures desperately seeking a merger would've felt laughable. For another, the advent of streaming has completely upended the status quo, transforming bravura spectacles crafted specifically for theaters — even one directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola — into an exception rather than the rule. And, of course, ever-volatile moviegoer habits combined with a once-in-a-generation pandemic have further convinced industry bigwigs to embrace risk-averse strategies, spurning auteur-driven passion projects in favor of the safer shores of superheroes and other franchises.
