Everyone Who Has Ever Hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’
Image
Since 1975 nearly a thousand hosts have graced the stage at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center for “Saturday Night Live.”

Actors, comedians, musicians and even politicians have taken the stage to make America laugh on Saturday night for 50 seasons. Twenty five of these hosts have been inducted into the “Five Timers Club.” The club was first introduced during Tom Hanks’ 1990 monologue, featuring Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon.

During Martin Short’s December 2024 appearance, several Five Timers Club members popped up on the show to welcome him into the club, including Emma Stone, Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig and more, to give him the ceremonial robe.

Alec Baldwin has hosted the show 17 times, the most in the series’ history, with Martin, Hanks, Buck Henry and John Goodman following close behind.

As the show celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, we have rounded up every person who has hosted the sketch show.

How to Watch Every John Grisham Movie in Order
Image
Author John Grisham has turned his legal experience into a host of best-selling novels, many of which have become television series and movies. Feature films based on Grisham's work have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the domestic box office alone, attesting to his widespread appeal.

Not every one of the nine feature films based on Grisham's works is about the law, however, with Christmas with the Kranks standing alone as a comedy. Grisham has also tried his hand at writing at least one movie screenplay, Mickey, but the best-known John Grisham movies are the legal thrillers based on the books for which he's so well known.

The chronology of movies based on Grisham's work is a fascinating look back at just how far his star has risen. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood have appeared in Grisham flicks, making them even more must-see movies.

The 15 Best Episodes Of Star Trek: Enterprise, Ranked
Image
The first "Star Trek" television series of the 21st century was the prequel "Star Trek: Enterprise," running for four seasons from 2001 to 2005. Set approximately a century before the events of "Star Trek: The Original Series," the show covers humanity's early days exploring the galaxy. The series' central starship, the Enterprise Nx-01, is among the first capable of traveling warp five, with this enhanced speed giving it access to an expansive number of worlds. Commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), the Enterprise leads the creation of what would become the United Federation of Planets.

Throughout its four-season run, "Enterprise" provided a unique approach to the "Star Trek" franchise, showing the origins of many of its familiar tropes and concepts. "Enterprise" also featured stories spanning multiple episodes, mixing longer-form storytelling with the franchise's usual episodic format. While "Enterprise" may have seen a mixed reception across its run, including a poorly regarded finale,...

With no prior knowledge of the challenge and varying levels of outdoor experience, the contestants will face brutal conditions, heart-pounding challenges, and gut-wrenching eliminations. The “Mountain’s Keeper” will add further twists, forcing the trekkers to make difficult decisions that will test their morals and relationships. The Summit Announces Its Season 1 Competitors
Image
Poster for CBS’s ‘The Summit’

CBS’s new unscripted competition series The Summit announced the 16 brave individuals who’ll taking on intense physical challenges. Competitors include a neuroscientist, a trauma nurse, a barber, and a stay-at-home mom.

Manu Bennett hosts the new reality series set to premiere on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 9pm Et/Pt. Season one moves to its regular Wednesdays at 9:30pm Et/Pt time slot on October 9th.

CBS offers this description of the new primetime series:

“These 16 strangers – from a Trader Joe’s employee and mother of two, to a 29-year-old trauma nurse, to a 33-year-old Air Force service member – are truly stepping into the unknown, as they did not know what they were signing up for and many of them have no previous climbing or camping experience. The result is a test of their character, both physical and mental, in ways they never imagined possible,...

‘The Thicket’ Review: Tubi or Not Tubi, This Is a Great, Gloomy Western
Image
In the highly competitive world of streaming services, Tubi has made a name for itself. It’s a weird name, sure, but it’s a name. Tubi is free with commercials, which companies like Netflix probably think is madness, but more importantly it’s packed with movies and TV shows that pretty much all the other streamers don’t give a crap about.

You can find big releases licensed from major studios, but you can get those anywhere. Try finding the 1988 Canadian TV series “T and T” — about Mister T working as a legal aid — on Netflix or Disney+. They would never. Tubi is the equivalent of the quirky mom and pop video store located just down the street from a parasitic Blockbuster that can’t quite put them out of business, because Blockbuster doesn’t carry esoteric oddities like the 1990 ultra-low budget compilation video “That’s Action” hosted by Robert Culp.

This 1950s Western Show Predicted Donald Trumps Border Wall
Image
Quick Links What Is Trackdown? What Is President Trump's Border Policy? How Does Trackdown Predict Trump's Border Wall Policy?

The phrase "life imitates art" has never rung truer than in an eerily prophetic 1958 episode of the TV western Trackdown. In the show's 30th episode, "The End of the World," a con man named Walter Trump (Lawrence Dobkin) fools naive Texas villagers into believing that the end days are near. To seize power and control the village, Trump warns the locals that a looming existential threat requires the construction of a protective border wall, calling to mind President Donald Trump's infamous Mexican border policy that his 2016 campaign was built on.

In addition to predicting President Trump's border policy, the prescient Trackdown episode is loaded with one shocking premonition after another. As the legally embattled former Potus runs for re-election in 2024, the U.S./Mexican border issue will inevitably be raised,...

Peter Falk at an event for Columbo: Columbo Likes the Nightlife (2003)
Just One More Thing: Columbo: The 1970s (Seasons 1-7) on Kino Lorber Blu-ray
Peter Falk at an event for Columbo: Columbo Likes the Nightlife (2003)
The deceptively unassuming figure of Los Angeles homicide detective Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk), with his rumpled raincoat, cheap cigars, and seeming absentmindedness, might not call to mind the sprawling existentialist novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky. But Columbo’s ancestry can be traced all the way back to Porfiry Petrovich, the pesky, psychologically attuned investigator in Crime and Punishment.

Like that literary classic, the show that shares Columbo’s name functions as an inverted detective story, not so much a whodunit as a howcatchem. In each episode, we spend time with the murderer, soak up their milieu, and witness the commission of the crime. Only then does Columbo make his entrance onto the scene. From there, it’s an escalating battle of nerves between the dogged detective and the initially arrogant murderer.

While Rodion Raskolnikov, the tortured protagonist of Crime and Punishment, is an impoverished student who kills out of economic necessity...

WME Wants Out Of Bill Cosby 1971 Sexual Assault Case
Image
William Morris Endeavor want nothing to do with Billy Cosby or a sexual assault case against the much-accused comedian.

In paperwork filed in LA Superior Court yesterday, WME asserted that they should not be a co-defendant in Linda Ridgway-Whitedeer’s claims that the man once known as “America’s Dad” forced her to perform oral sex on him back in 1971.

Having first went public with the alleged assault in 2015 as dozens of women came forward against Cosby, the plaintiff’s civil suit of September this year says that “at the time of the sexual assault, the William Morris Agency knew, or should have had knowledge of Defendant’s repeated acts of sexual assault.”

Now, the agency that Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell created out of the 2009 melding of William Morris and Endeavor proclaims they had “no control” over what did or did not happen 52 years ago.

“Pursuant to California Code of Civil Procedure …WME denies,...

How ‘Succession’ can enter the Emmy record books with a win for Kieran Culkin
Image
When Kieran Culkin confirmed in late April that he will submit in Best Drama Actor at the Emmys for the fourth and final season of “Succession” after two supporting bids, it set off a flurry of reactions. One was that it’s the correct call, given the increased focus on Roman (Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) this season in the wake of Logan’s (Brian Cox) death in the third episode. Another was that he would split the vote with Strong, the 2020 champ, and Cox, who later confirmed he was staying in lead, paving the way for someone else to triumph. But if either Culkin or Cox pulls out the win, though the latter seems less likely, “Succession” will join rarefied air as one of just two series to win the category for two different people.

Eleven dramas have nabbed multiple wins in the Best Drama Actor category,...

Eddie Murphy Currently In Talks To Lead New Pink Panther Movie
Image
Eddie Murphy is reportedly in talks to star in a remake of the classic comedy The Pink Panther. Starring the legendary Peter Sellers as bumbling Inspector Clouseau, 1963’s The Pink Panther was a smash hit heist comedy that spawned a long-running Sellers-led series, culminating with 1983’s Curse of the Pink Panther. Following Sellers’ death, the Pink Panther franchise made a return in 1993 with Son of the Pink Panther, starring Roberto Benigni as Clouseau’s progeny. A proper reboot was later attempted with 2006’s Shawn Levy-directed The Pink Panther, starring Steve Martin, who reprised the role of Clouseau in 2009’s The Pink Panther 2.

Now over a decade after Martin’s second and apparently final outing in the Pink Panther series, MGM is developing a new reboot, with Shrek star Murphy reportedly in talks to play Clouseau (via THR). Sonic the Hedgehog’s Jeff Fowler was previously reported to be directing,...

Bill Butler, Cinematographer on ‘Jaws,’ Dies at 101
Image
Emmy-winning cinematographer Bill Butler, who was Oscar nominated for shooting “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and was also the D.P. on Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” died Wednesday, according to the American Society of Cinematographers. He was 101.

Spielberg remembered Butler in a statement, saying, “On ‘Jaws,’ Bill Butler was the bedrock on that rickety, rocking boat called the Orca. He was the only calm in the middle of that storm, and as we went into a battle against nature and technology that wore both of us down, the audience eventually won the war. Bill’s outlook on life was pragmatic, philosophical and so very patient, and I owe him so much for his steadfast and creative contributions to the entire look of ‘Jaws.’”

In addition to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Butler served as d.p. on a number of other high-profile films of the 1970s, including Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation,...

Robert Blake, TV’s Baretta Who Was Tried for Murder, Dies at 89
Image
Actor Robert Blake, a man with a long and complex legacy, has died, a representative for his son-in-law Gregg Hurwitz confirmed to Variety. The former child actor was best known for his Emmy-winning role as the cockatoo-owning undercover cop in the popular 1970s TV series “Baretta” and, more infamously, for his trial following the 2001 murder of his wife. He was 89.

As reported by the Associated Press, Blake died from heart disease on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles.

These two aspects of Blake’s legacy were inseparable in some ways, and the personal turmoil that made the latter at least circumstantially plausible (the case against Blake hinged on motive — he may have wanted to be free of his rocky marriage) fueled his acting.

Blake was acquitted of the murder charge, as well as of one count of soliciting murder, in his criminal trial in 2005, but in a civil trial later that year,...

5 Deep Cut Winter Horror Movies You Maybe Haven’t Seen
Image
No genre is as prolific as horror, so it’s understandable that movies fall through the cracks all the time. That is where this new recurring column, Deep Cuts, comes in. While some movies remain popular and talked about, regardless of age, countless others have faded into the background or obscurity.

Each themed installment of this series will spotlight several overlooked, unappreciated or generally unknown movies from the past — some from way back when, and others from not so long ago — that could use some more attention.

The first edition of this column will look at horror movies featuring wintry settings. It may not feel or look like winter wherever you are right now, but somewhere it’s cold. And with a frosty backdrop, the five winter horror movies here feel more bleak than usual.

The Greatest American Hero: Gone But Not Forgotten
Super-Herói Americano (1981)
The Greatest American Hero is a show that’s much beloved by folks of a certain generation. If you grew up in the seventies or eighties, the theme song is instantly iconic. In fact, the track “Believe it or Not” by Joey Scarbury actually made it all the way to the number 2 spot on the Billboard Charts. It was actually a bigger hit than the show itself, which only ran for two and a half seasons before being cancelled with five unaired episodes in early 1983. Yet, it remains part of the pop culture, with talk of rebooting it every now and then.

A reboot would definitely make sense given how obsessed people are with superheroes, with the red and black suit the hero wears iconic in its own way. The show starred cult horror icon William Katt (House) as Ralph Hanley, a teacher who’s endowed with superhuman abilities by aliens,...

Santa’s Slay (2005) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Bill Goldberg in Uma Noite de Fúria (2005)
The new episode of our The Black Sheep video series doubles as a Christmas viewing recommendation, as we’re taking a look back at the 2005 horror comedy slasher Santa’s Slay (watch it Here) – which stars professional wrestler Bill Goldberg as a very unpleasant Santa Claus. To find out all about the movie and why we think it deserves to be seen by more genre fans, check out the video embedded above!

Written and directed by David Steiman, Santa’s Slay has the following synopsis: It turns out that Santa Claus is not really the sweet old fellow that we all know and love. In fact, he’s a devil and the only thing that’s kept his bad side in check was a bet he lost with an angel. After 1000 years of playing nice, the bet is up and Santa is about to open up a can of Whoop-Ass! The only...

Kate Mulgrew Looks Back On Mrs. Columbo, Her Short-Lived Columbo Spin-Off [Exclusive]
Image
Actress Kate Mulgrew has had a long and storied career. Although perhaps best recognized as Captain Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager" or Red on "Orange is the New Black," Mulgrew's TV career goes back to the 1970s when she appeared in 409 episodes of the soap opera "Ryan's Hope." But Mulgrew landed her first starring role in 1979 -- when she was only 24 -- playing the title character on the short-lived detective spinoff series "Mrs. Columbo."

To explain: "Columbo" was a popular detective series that first began regularly airing in 1971. "Columbo" starred Peter Falk as the title character, a police lieutenant whose first name is never officially spoken (although fans will be able to tell you that it's Frank). The gimmick of the series was that audiences were allowed to watch the perpetrators commit their crime right in a given episode's opening act. Columbo wouldn't be called in to investigate until later in said episode.

Twice-Told Tales

Blu-ray

Kino Lorber

1963 / 1.66: 1 / 120 Min.

Starring Vincent Price, Sebastian Cabot, Joyce Taylor

Written by Robert E. Kent

Directed by Sidney Salkow

Released in October of 1963, the first review of Sidney Salkow’s Twice-Told Tales appeared in 1623: “Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale.” That line from Shakespeare’s King John is a nice summation of Salkow’s horror anthology, an undernourished melodrama that finds its salvation in, no surprise, the reliably entertaining Vincent Price.

Nathaniel Hawthorne used that Shakespearean quip as the title of his own collection of reprinted material, published in March of 1837. The book had a cover price of one dollar, which might have been close to the budget for Salkow’s movie—a remarkably cheap-looking production, even for Admiral Pictures. The company, headed by Grant Whytock with funding from Edward Small, specialized in cutting corners—they even worked their chintzy magic on Roger Corman’s Tower of London,...

Review: "National Lampoon's Movie Madness" (1982) Starring Peter Riegert, Robert Culp And Diane Lane; Kino Lorber/Code Red Blu-ray Release
Image
By Lee Pfeiffer

Like many boys who grew up in the 1960s, I was addicted to Mad magazine. It's sarcastic satires of politicians and pop culture figures were all the rage and the magazine was a showcase for some truly impressive writers and artists. Mad pushed the envelope in some regards but publisher William Gaines still maintained a family-friendly facade. In 1970, I entered high school a few months after another satire magazine, National Lampoon, published its premiere issue. The first issue I saw featured a striking cover by artist Frank Frazetta that spoofed those old jungle movies. It depicted a courageous white guy saving a scantily clad white woman from a hoard of African natives. It was titled "White Man's Wet Dream". I was hooked before I opened the magazine. National Lampoon became a "must-read" for young people of the era. Unlike Mad, there were no holds barred when it came to off-limits subjects.

“The Greatest American Hero”
WillI ABC continue to develop a live-action TV series reboot of "The Greatest American Hero" (1981) starring Hannah Simone ("New Girl") as an 'empowered' woman, who is given an alien powered supersuit, or will they opt for a ‘ woke’ interpretation of the main character ?

Retro-active: The Best From The Cinema Retro Archives

Review – Naked City: The Complete Series

Rlj Entertainment / 6,063 minutes

By Harvey F. Chartrand

Naked City was like no other TV series before or since – Michel Moriarty, star of Law and Order, once told this reviewer.

Inspired by Jules Dassin's 1948 film of the same name, Naked City centers on the detectives of the NYPD’s 65th Precinct, but the criminals and New York City itself often played as prominent a role in the dramas as the series regulars. Like the film it was based on, Naked City (1958- 1963) was shot almost entirely on location. The first season ran as a half-hour show under the title The Naked City, starring James Franciscus and John McIntire playing, respectively, Detective Jimmy Halloran and Lieutenant Dan Muldoon—the same roles essayed by Don Taylor and Barry Fitzgerald in the film.

The Naked City also starred Harry Bellaver as Det.

10 oldest Emmy winners of Best Drama Guest Actor
Image
Between 1968 and 2003, the detective drama series “Columbo” produced a total of 69 episodes and won 13 Primetime Emmy awards from 39 nominations. Each installment involved the titular police lieutenant outsmarting a careless murderer, often played by a famous TV or film star. Several actors were apprehended by Columbo more than once, with George Hamilton and William Shatner appearing in two episodes each, Jack Cassidy and Robert Culp in three apiece, and Patrick McGoohan in four.

McGoohan took home a Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy for the 1990 episode “Agenda for Murder,” which also brought the series’ star, Peter Falk, his fourth and final trophy for playing Columbo. McGoohan portrayed an unscrupulous lawyer with hopes of being appointed Attorney General who offs a blackmailer with 20-year-old dirt on him. At 62, he was initially the second oldest man to ever win the award, but he has since been surpassed by eight others, five of whom were...

Stranger on the Run
Image
Favorite director Don Siegel is in fine form in this 1967 TV movie, a keeper with qualities not seen in Hollywood’s mega-westerns of the day. Henry Fonda’s ragged drifter is hunted by a gang of railroad deputies, and chief deputy Michael Parks doesn’t intercede because he can’t control his own men. A great screenplay, Siegel’s direction, plus committed performances make it stand out: Anne Baxter, Dan Duryea, Sal Mineo, Bernie Hamilton and Madlyn Rhue.

Lee Majors in The Six Million Dollar Man (1973)
The Greatest American Hero: The 10 Best Episodes, According To IMDb
Lee Majors in The Six Million Dollar Man (1973)
In the 1970s and early 1980s, superhero TV shows were incredibly popular. The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman were two of the biggest TV shows on television, and various comic book heroes were adapted into their own TV shows, including Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman and the Bill Bixby-Lou Ferrigno adaptation of The Incredible Hulk. By the early 1980s, as most of these shows left the air or were about to be canceled, a new superhero TV series premiered: The Greatest American Hero.

Related: The Greatest American Hero: Ralph's 10 Best Powers

This series was a satire of the superhero genre, and it centered around Ralph Hinkley, portrayed by William Katt, a school teacher who gets a super-suit from aliens and struggles to figure out how to use it, since he lost the instruction book. Helping him is FBI agent Bill Maxwell, played by Robert Culp, and his attorney girlfriend Pam Davidson,...

‘Succession’s’ Jeremy Strong joins a very short list of Best Drama Actor Emmy champs to defeat a co-star
Image
Just like on “Succession,” the Number One Boy got the better of Logan Roy (for now). Jeremy Strong beat his TV father Brian Cox for the Best Drama Actor Emmy on Sunday, becoming just the sixth person to topple a co-star in the category.

The “Succession” twosome were the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees, but winning against a co-star has proven to be difficult. The only drama actor champs who’ve managed to do it are “I Spy’s” Bill Cosby, who went 3-0 against Robert Culp from 1966-68; “St. Elsewhere’s” Ed Flanders and William Daniels, who beat each other (Flanders in 1983 and Daniels in 1985 and ’86); Dennis Franz, who trump two “NYPD Blue” partners, David Caruso (1994) and Jimmy Smits; and “This Is Us'” Sterling K. Brown, who defeated Milo Ventimiglia on their first go-around in 2017.

Flanders and Daniels are the only co-stars to have notched a victory over the other,...

‘Succession’ fields the 17th drama actor Emmy duo with Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong
Image
Logan Roy and his Number One Boy’s new battleground? The Emmys. Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both nabbed Best Drama Actor nominations Tuesday for “Succession” to become the 17th pair of co-stars to be nominated together.

The two are up against Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Steve Carell (“Better Call Saul”), reigning champ Billy Porter (“Pose”) and former champ Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”).

Cox’s and Strong’s bids mark the fourth year in a row that co-stars have made the cut in this category. “This Is Us” scored nominations for Brown and Milo Ventimiglia from 2017-19, and “Westworld” fielded Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in 2018.

Before that, “True Detective,” competing as a drama for its first season, ended a 12-year dry spell with bids for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in 2014. “Six Feet Under” was the last show to do so prior to that in 2002 with Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause.

‘Succession’ is poised to produce the 17th pair of co-star drama actor nominees at the Emmys
Image
Yeah, yeah, we know “Succession” has never gotten any acting nominations from an industry group, but the drama series favorite is expected to break through at the Emmys with a handful, including double bids in drama actor for Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. If Logan Roy and his Number One Boy make the cut, they’d be the 17th duo to be shortlisted in the category.

Double drama actor nominees from the same show have been the rage in recent years with “This Is Us” snagged bids for Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia three years running (2017-19) and “Westworld” getting Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright in two years ago. So the lack of aversion is good news for “Succession,” along with the unlimited nominating slots on the ballot.

Prior to this recent run, “True Detective” garnered nominations for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey when it competed as a drama...

Sunday in New York
Image
Romantic comedies became coy sex chase comedies in the early 1960s, once Doris Day made ‘professional virgin’ a Hollywood career. This mistaken identity/crossed prevarications farce is better than most, thanks to charming performances by Jane Fonda and Rod Taylor, and a fine script by Norman Krasna, from his play. The story doesn’t dance around the issue of should she or shouldn’t she — the frustrated young heroine asks the question right out loud: ‘Am I supposed to sleep with a steady boyfriend?’

Before she became a great star and two-time Academy Award® winner*, Jane Fonda was a screen ingenue who sent a string of bubbly romantic comedies soaring, including this charmer from the prolific pen of Norman Krasna. Fonda portrays a virginal miss blessed with long limbs and a knockout profile who runs from her fianc (Robert Culp) to the swingin’ pad of her brother (Cliff Robertson) and then into the arms of a guy she meets on the Fifth Avenue bus (Rod Taylor) — all the while trying to decide if she’ll say “yes” before she says “I do.” Filmed on location, Sunday in New York is a fun, sophisticated romp set to a hip Peter Nero score that features Mel Torm singing the title tune.

Earle Hagen
Composer Earle Hagen at 100: ‘Andy Griffith’ and ‘Dick Van Dyke’ Theme Writer’s Legacy Endures
Earle Hagen
Earle Hagen, the Emmy-winning composer who wrote the iconic themes for “The Andy Griffith Show,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “I Spy” and many others, would have turned 100 years old on July 9.

He was one of the most influential composers in TV history, formally recognized for his landmark work when the Television Academy inducted him, posthumously, into its Hall of Fame in 2011. He was only the second musician to be so honored.

Hagen pioneered the creation of original music for television in the 1950s, when most TV music was cheaply recorded mood music licensed from pre-existing libraries. By the 1960s, he was composing, arranging and conducting for as many as five shows a week — “The Danny Thomas Show,” “That Girl” and “The Mod Squad” among them — and set a high standard that other TV composers would aspire to in years to come.

“Earle was a huge influence on us, and really good with the tunes,...

It Came From The Tube: Spectre (1977)
The television landscape is overflowing with failed pilots; those poor souls who try to go to series, but are forever doomed to perish in the eternal hellfire of the forgotten. (And YouTube.) Sometimes the shows are not picked up for financial reasons, and sometimes they just give off a "hell No" vibe that even TV executives can’t miss. And then you have Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek’s mastermind, who by the mid-’70s produced failed pilot after failed pilot. His last try before the impending Trek-aissance was Spectre (1977), a very well-made Satanic Panic meets Sherlock Holmes proposal that promised a lot of ghoulish fun had it been picked up. As is, it’s a groovy (and randy) time capsule of an era when the Devil had his share of air time.

Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Spectre originally aired May 21st as an NBC Saturday Night at the Movies,...

Robert Culp in Trackdown (1957)
1950s Western Predicted a Border Wall From a Fictional Con Man Named Trump
Robert Culp in Trackdown (1957)
An episode of a 1950s Western drama may have foretold America’s current border wall crisis more than 60 years ago. Politics today and the show both feature men named Trump with a wall that is promised to protect every citizen from danger.

“Trackdown” aired on CBS between 1957 and 1959 and took place in Texas following the Civil War. The series followed Texas Ranger Hoby Gilman, played by Robert Culp, on his adventures protecting the people of the Lone Star State. The 30th episode of the show, titled “The End of The World,” premiered on May 9, 1958, and saw a con man named Walter Trump, played by Lawrence Dobkin, attempt to scam the entire town.

Snopes confirmed that the eerily prescient episode was real.

The fictional Trump warned the Texans that apocalyptic meteors would strike the town at midnight, but he could protect everyone. “I bring you a message,” he said. “A message...

Dois Lados de um Crime (2017)
Film Review: ‘A Crooked Somebody’
Dois Lados de um Crime (2017)
So many VOD-centric dramas call to mind the direct-to-video Blockbuster fodder of yesteryear that it’s actually refreshing to come across one that’s more reminiscent of a cleverly plotted TV-movie from primetime of the 1970s. It’s quite easy to imagine “A Crooked Somebody” airing as an “ABC Movie of the Week” during the Polyester Era with, say, Monte Markham and Robert Culp doing yeoman service in the lead roles and a good 20 minutes or so shaven from the narrative to allow for commercial breaks. On the other hand, it’s even easier to simply enjoy it as a satisfyingly crafted entertainment that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but does take a few surprising detours from well-trodden genre paths.

Rich Sommer (of TV’s “Mad Men”) hits all the right notes on a scale ranging from smooth operator to desperate prevaricator as Michael Vaughn, a minor league...

Harlan Ellison Dead: Legendary ‘Star Trek’, ‘A Boy And His Dog’ Sci-Fi Writer was 84
Harlan Ellison
Harlan Ellison, one of the world’s foremost science fiction writers, has died at 84. His death was announced by family friend Christine Valada via twitter. Though Ellison was a longtime resident of Los Angeles, the location of death was not disclosed.

Tweeted Valada, the widow of Wolverine creator Len Wein: “Susan Ellison has asked me to announce the passing of writer Harlan Ellison, in his sleep, earlier today. “For a brief time I was here, and for a brief time, I matter.’ – He, 1934-2018. Arrangements for a celebration are pending.”

Among Ellison’s highly influential and very popular novels and novellas are 1969’s post-apocalyptic A Boy and His Dog (made into a 1975 cult film starring a young Don Johnson) and, among the very many short story collections, 1980’s Shatterday, which included the remarkable title story that became the basis for the very first episode of the rebooted 1985 Twilight Zone.
