75 Years of 'Sunset Boulevard' and Hollywood’s Beloved Haunted Mansion
Image
Seventy-five years after ‘Sunset Boulevard’ premiered in 1950, Billy Wilder’s scathing portrait of Hollywood still cuts deep. Released in the post-war golden age of American Cinema, the film follows Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), a former silent film star who, unable to accept the demise of her career, hires a screenwriter, Joe Gillis (William Holden), to help her make a comeback. With gothic settings and classic noir fatalism, ‘Sunset Boulevard’ remains a towering critique of fame, vanity, and the entertainment machine that chews up and spits out its stars. In 2025, we see so much of the hyper-speed churn of online celebrities and digital insignificance that the film’s haunting message feels eerily modern. Norma Desmond’s descent into madness, once a melodramatic warning, now reads like a grim prophecy. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. How John Wayne Felt About Marlon Brando's Method Acting
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

John Wayne was not, to put it mildly, a precious actor. According to Scott Eyre's biography "John Wayne: The Life and Legend," Howard Hawks once said, "Wayne never read a script that I had. He'd say, 'What am I supposed to do in this?'... He'd never learn lines before I talked to him, because he said that threw him off. He could memorize two pages of dialogue in three or four minutes, and then he just goes and does it."

So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the introspective process of method acting exemplified by new breed stars like Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, and Julie Harris irritated a straightforward star like Wayne. Aside from the skills he'd cultivated through study and repetition, he wasn't big on interiority. With very few exceptions, he took on roles that showcased his rugged,...

“Dawn of the Jedi” or Delay of the Jedi? James Mangold’s Star Wars Epic Faces New Uncertainty
Image
James Mangold, director of Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, is set to helm a new Star Wars film titled Dawn of the Jedi. This film aims to delve into the origins of the Jedi Order, exploring the Force's beginnings approximately 25,000 years before the events of A New Hope. Mangold has described the project as a "Cecil B. DeMille-style biblical epic," drawing inspiration from classics like The Ten Commandments.

However, Mangold's involvement in another high-profile project, High Side, has raised concerns about potential delays for the Star Wars film. Reports in January 2025 suggested that the script for Dawn of the Jedi, co-written by Mangold and Andor’s Beau Willimon, is expected to be completed by the summer, with casting to follow. Production was reportedly tentatively scheduled to begin in December, though there was never official confirmation of this timeline.

Now, with Mangold's commitment to his new...

One Of Martin Scorsese's Favorite Westerns Is Nearly Impossible To Watch
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If you're a film buff, you can almost certainly cite the first movie you saw in a theater. Mine was "Star Wars." I was three years old, and screamed in terror when the lights dimmed. I was enchanted for a whole ten minutes or so before conking out -- though I did rouse for the trench run. I finally watched "Star Wars" in its entirety during its 1978 rerelease, and that experience of, to my four-year-old mind, having watched a movie that was shot in space is an exhilaration I've been chasing for the last 47 years.

I was fortunate that my introduction to the transporting magic of the movies came via the most pivotal piece of cinema, commercially and artistically, since "Gone with the Wind." Meanwhile, there's some kid out there whose first trip to the theater was to see Tim Allen in "Jungle 2 Jungle.

Rosebud, Iconic Sled From ‘Citizen Kane,’ Sells for $14.75 Million at Auction
Image
The sled known as Rosebud — or at least one of the original red sleds created for the 1941 Orson Welles masterpiece Citizen Kane — has just sold for $14.75 million at auction.

The pine hardwood prop, which bears its original paint but signs of production use, wear and removed rails likely sacrificed to wartime scrap drives, has belonged to director Joe Dante since 1984. While he was directing Explorers (1985), it was given to him by someone clearing out a portion of the Paramount lot that once served as the home of Rko Pictures.

“One of the crew who knew I was a fan of vintage films came to me with a wood prop and said, ‘They’re throwing out all of this stuff. You might want this,’” Dante recalled in a recent interview. “I’m not sure he knew what the sled was, but he must have had some inkling, or why else would he have asked me?...

Tony Gilroy Shares Thoughts on Mangold’s Upcoming Star Wars Film: “They’re Going Way Back”
Image
A new Star Wars movie is in the works, and it’s going way back in time, much farther than any film before. Director James Mangold is working on a project reportedly called Jedi Prime, which will explore the very origins of the Jedi Order and the Force itself. The story is set about 25,000 years before the original Star Wars saga, so fans won’t see any familiar characters from previous movies.

Lucasfilm first revealed this film at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April 2023. They said it will kick off a new era in the Star Wars timeline called Dawn of the Jedi. Mangold mentioned that his inspiration for the movie comes from classic biblical epics. He even compared it to The Ten Commandments, calling the film a “Cecil B. DeMille-style biblical epic.”

Mangold began developing this movie while directing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. At the same time,...

A new Star Wars movie is on the way, and it’s set to take fans farther back in time than ever before. Director James Mangold is working on a film allegedly called Jedi Prime, which will explore the very beginning of the Jedi Order and the origins of the Force. The story takes place around 25,000 years before the original Star Wars films, long before any of the characters fans already know.

Lucasfilm first announced the project at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April 2023. At the time, they said the movie would mark the start of a new era in the Star Wars timeline called Dawn of the Jedi. Mangold said he was inspired by old biblical epics, and even compared his vision to something like The Ten Commandments. He called the film a “Cecil B. DeMille-style biblical epic.”

Secrets of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery: David Lynch’s Grave, a Stolen Head and Rudolph Valentino’s Ghost
Image
Who wouldn’t want to live on the fifth floor of Los Angeles’ new Gower Court building, an architectural landmark with one of the best views in town? Looking over a vast swath of the city, with the Hollywood sign in the distance, it has the ideal vista for anyone who would like to be part of showbiz history. There’s just one thing — only the deceased can stake out a premium spot on the Sky Terrace of this mausoleum, where crypt prices start at a cool million.

This real estate, right next door to Paramount Studios, wasn’t always so desirable. Before Tyler Cassity and co-owner Yogu Kanthiah took over in 1998, Hollywood Forever Cemetery — the final resting place of legendary cinematic figures including Rudolph Valentino, Judy Garland and John Huston — had fallen into disrepair.

The new five-story Gower Mausoleum was designed by Lehrer Architects with a nod to the...

The Stunning Vasquez Rocks Served As A Key Filming Location For Multiple Sci-Fi Classics
Image
The Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County, about a 45-minute drive from Hollywood proper (depending on traffic). They are a popular tourist destination because the layered rock formations jut out of the ground at strange, wild angles, giving them an alien look. They were named after Tiburcio Vásquez, a notoriously clever Mexican bandit who hid out among the rocks while eluding the cops back in the 1870s. Hikers have been hiding out among the rocks ever since, admiring their otherworldly beauty.

Vasquez Rocks has been a popular shooting destination for dozens of major films and TV shows, largely because they're such a short drive from all the production offices in Los Angeles. It's easy to bundle the cast of "Star Trek" into a van, dress three stuntman as a Gorn character, and go to the Rocks to film actors pretend-fight each other.

Return to 'Sunset Boulevard' in Trailer for First-Ever 4K Ultra HD Restoration [Exclusive]
Image
Nearly 75 years have passed since the release of arguably one of the greatest movies ever made, and a stone-cold classic of film noir — Sunset Boulevard. Directed by Billy Wilder, who would go on to helm other Oscar winners like Marilyn Monroe's Some Like it Hot and the Jack Lemmon rom-com The Apartment, the feature was a sensation from the moment of its release in 1950, earning 11 Academy Award nominations, three wins, and, eventually, was among the first films to be preserved in the National Film Registry. Yet, one thing the cinematic masterpiece has lacked is a proper restoration in 4K Ultra HD for modern viewers. That's about to change this summer with a new physical and digital release. Collider can exclusively share the official trailer made from restored footage of the Paramount classic.

Immediately, the trailer whisks viewers back to Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, which is looking crisper than ever.

Fred Astaire movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Fred Astaire was an Oscar-nominated song and dance man best remembered for a series of musicals he made alongside many female dancer, but especially Ginger Rogers. Yet his filmography extends well past those titles. Let's take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

As a dancer, Astaire was known for his perfectionism, doing multiple takes to get the most precise movements correct. His immaculate steps were matched only by his outfits, which often consisted of top hats and coats.

After making a name for himself on the stage in London and on Broadway, Astaire came to Hollywood. He first appeared with fellow dancer Rogers in "Flying Down to Rio" (1933), where they played second fiddle to Dolores del Rio and Gene Raymond. Their first starring vehicle came just one year later: "The Gay Divorcee" (1934).

Their subsequent films, including "Top Hat" (1935), "Follow the Fleet" (1936), "Swing Time" (1936), and...

‘The Brutalist’ Revives Interest in VistaVision, a Format with an Aesthetic All Its Own, at TCM Festival
Image
VistaVision is back. Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” not only earned Lol Crawley the Best Cinematography Oscar but has sparked a renewed interest in the format — one that is now being further fanned by unconfirmed reports of the 35mm horizontal format also being used in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Alejandro González Iñárritu’s untitled 2026 film, and Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights.”

The timing is perfect, therefore, for the TCM Classic Film Festival to screen two rare Paramount VistaVision prints of “We’re No Angels” (1955) and “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” (1957) on April 26 at the Tcl Chinese Theater. What’s more, the movies will be projected with special horizontal projectors, which haven’t been used since the 1950s.

Crawley will introduce “Gunfight,” the Western from director John Sturges (“The Magnificent Seven”), which teams Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday, and Charlotte Barker,...

Shirley MacLaine movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Shirley MacLaine is the Oscar-winning performer who has made dozens of movies in her 60-plus year career, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let's take a look back at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1934, MacLaine is the older sister of Warren Beatty, proving that acting talent must run in the family. She made her screen debut with Alfred Hitchcock's "The Trouble with Harry" (1955) when she was just 21 years old. Her first Oscar nomination came three years later: Best Actress for "Some Came Running" (1958).

MacLaine would compete four more times at the Oscars unsuccessfully: three for Best Actress, once for Best Documentary Feature ("The Other Half of the Sky: A China Memoir" in 1975). She finally struck gold with James L. Brooks' comedic drama "Terms of Endearment" (1983), playing a controlling mother who clashes with her free-spirited daughter (Debra Winger). Their rivalry extended to the awards race,...

Coralie Fargeat at an event for Vingança (2017)
The Substance | Director Coralie Fargeat’s Star Wars film from 1993 is a thing of beauty
Coralie Fargeat at an event for Vingança (2017)
In 1993, the future director of The Substance, Coralie Fargeat, made a Star Wars fan film. Over 30 years later, it’s now available to watch online…

Over 30 years before she both startled and beguiled audiences with her horror satire The Substance, writer-director Coralie Fargeat made a Star Wars film. It was 1993, the French filmmaker was just 17, and she had little more than a camcorder and a VHS player to work with.

All the same, her 14-minute homage to George Lucas’s space fantasy is a thing of ramshackle beauty – and decades after Fargeat made it, the whole thing is available to watch online. Below, in fact.

The short emerged thanks to Letterboxd (via TheWrap), which published some comments from Fargeat about her first piece of work as a director.

“Using my family’s camcorder,” she wrote, “I animated my toys frame by frame in stop motion, disguised my friends as Ewoks...

The John Wayne Western That Changed Kevin Costner's Life

If you're ever fortunate enough to interview a great filmmaker, or simply find yourself occupying the same space as one and want to make the moment meaningful before it passes, you'll always get a genuine answer when you ask them to name the movie that made them fall in love with the medium. This may not be true in years to come, when creators who grew up during the downtick in theatrical exhibition and the explosion of TikTok craft art meant to be digested in 30-second morsels on your smartphone, but right now it is a near certainty that your favorite director got bit by the cinema bug while sitting in a darkened theater — and that's a memory they can access as fast as their first kiss (do not ask them about that).

Steven Spielberg can tell you all about Cecil B. DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth," while...

Oscar-Nominated Cinematographers on Using Classic Techniques and Old Tech for a Modern Feel
Image
It’s ironic that a quarter of the way into the 21st century, when studios have seemingly accepted home streaming as their primary means of movie distribution, Dp Lol Crawley has earned an Oscar nomination for “The Brutalist,” shot on VistaVision, a widescreen film process developed by Paramount Pictures in 1954 to help lure viewers away from their living room TVs and into the theaters.

Used for such films as John Ford’s “The Searchers,” Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” VistaVision was designed as a competitor to 20th Century Fox’s Cinema- Scope, which employed an anamorphic lens to compress a widescreen image on to standard 35mm film stock.

“As opposed to pulling the film down vertically in a motion picture camera, it’s actually pulling it horizontally across eight perforations at a time,” explains Crawley. “So you end up with a bigger format,...

The 10 Worst Oscar Best Picture Nominees, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
If you want to get a feel for what cinema was like in a given year, looking at that year's best picture nominees would seem to be a good place to start. After all, only between five and 10 movies have received such a distinction annually, and since people voting work in the entertainment industry themselves, it's understandable they'd choose the cream of the crop, right?

Wrong!

It shouldn't be hard to find at least five amazing films each year, yet every so often, the Academy honors something that wasn't a hit with critics or audiences. People are quick to point out the worst Oscar best picture winners ever, like "Crash" and "Green Book," but when you expand that to nominees, you really wind up with some dreck (with a couple even taking home the big prize). For this list, we took the worst 10 films ever nominated based on their critics' Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Sunset Boulevard at 75: Still A Goat Among Movies
Image
"Hooray for Hollywood," the old song says. Since the inception of movies, Hollywood has had an interesting habit of making movies about itself. Until the 1950s, those movies almost exclusively celebrated moviemaking as a kind of idyllic profession, all fun and joy for those lucky enough to work in it. That changed in 1950 when director Billy Wilder issued a blistering denouncement of Hollywood with his film Sunset Boulevard.

Today, Sunset Boulevard lands on just about every list of the Greatest Movies Ever, usually somewhere in the top ten. That says something. More than 70 years and one Broadway musical adaptation later, Sunset Boulevard feels as probing and scathing as ever. Told with unforgettable dialog, strange meta-commentary on those who made the film, and acted with some of the greatest performances to ever hit the screen, it deserves its spot as one of the 10 Best Movies Ever.

Prime Video's 'House of David' Trailer Teases 'Game of Thrones' Action for Beloved Bible Story
Image
The tale of David vs. Goliath is one of the most popular and inspiring stories in anthropological history (originating in the Christian Bible), but you've never seen it told like this. The ultimate underdog story should need little introduction, as David, a small shepherd from the Valley of Elah, Israel, took down the mighty, bronze-armor adorned giant, using nothing but a slingshot — spoiler alert. The story has been told, and re-told countless times. But, a new Prime Video series is adding a flare of drama, and appears to be heavily inspired by HBO's Game of Thrones.

House of David has transformed the biblical story into an eight-episode series. The series was created by Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution & American Underdog) and Jon Gunn (Ordinary Angels), based on an idea by Erwin and The Chosen creator, Dallas Jenkins. Up-and-coming actor, Michael Iskander, best known for starring in the award-winning stage musical, Kimberly Akimbo,...

Disney, Scorsese and Spielberg Storyboards Unveiled by Prada Foundation for ‘A Kind of Language’ Exhibition
Image
Storyboards by more than 50 famed filmmakers and animators including Martin Scorsese, Hayao Miyazaki, Federico Fellini, Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson, and Alfred Hitchcock are set to go on display in an exhibition organised by Italy’s Prada Foundation.

The show, titled “A Kind of Language: Storyboards and Other Renderings for Cinema,” will kick off Jan. 30 in Milan at the Prada Foundation’s Osservatorio outpost and then travel to Prada’s Rong Zhai space dedicated to cultural activities in Shanghai in Nov. 2025.

Prada Foundation “Storyboards” exhibit – which comprises more than eight hundred mood boards, drawings, sketches and other items created between the late 1920s and 2024 – is curated by U.S. academic Melissa Harris, who is editor-at-large of Aperture Foundation. The show is designed to create an immersive experience by mimicking the working environment of a storyboard artist with drafting tables and an open layout.

“For many, storyboarding is an integral part of...

Final Oscar Predictions: Could ‘Emilia Pérez’ Make History and Will the Directors Branch Snub Women?
Image
In the year without a frontrunner, the doors are still wide open. I’m predicting three films will tie for the most nominations with 10 each: “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked.”

Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Pérez” is poised to dominate, and if it can tack on a tech nom or two, the Netflix film could become the most nominated non-English-language film in history, surpassing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) and “Roma” (2018). The streamer’s primary awards pony could potentially go even further. On an ideal nomination day, if it lands nods in all of its “on the bubble” categories — such as cinematography, sound, and two extra bids for supporting actress (Selena Gomez) and original song — it could secure 14 nominations, tying with “All About Eve” (1950), “Titanic” (1997), and “La La Land” (2016) as the most-nominated films of all time. Notably, “La La Land,” also a musical, is the only one to lose the best picture.

February on the Criterion Channel Includes Argentine Noir, Joan Micklin Silver, Chantal Akerman & More
Image
I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

James Mangold’s Dawn Of The Jedi Will Be Set ‘25,000 Years Before Any Known Star Wars Movie’
Image
It's been almost two years since Star Wars Celebration 2023 brought us the news that James Mangold, director of Logan, Le Mans '66, and Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, is gearing up to direct a new movie set in our beloved galaxy far, far away. And with the Star Wars universe heading into a year in which Andor Season 2 and Visions Volume 3 are likely the only new things we'll see on screen from Disney's Lucasfilm division, fans are already looking ahead to what Mangold's Dawn Of The Jedi may have in store for us. So too, it seems, is Mangold, who shared a little more info on his upcoming movie and his motivations with it in a newly released interview.

Speaking to MovieWeb ahead of the release of Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, Mangold clarified the setting of his new Star Wars film and stressed his hopes to...

James Mangold Hints His Star Wars Movie Won't Be 'Handcuffed' to the Lore
Image
Lucasfilm has about a dozen Star Wars movies in various stages of development. One of them is a prequel from James Mangold that will tell the origins of the Force, the mysterious energy field created by life that binds the Star Wars galaxy together.

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Mangold opened up about what convinced him to make a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, sharing that "the really important aspects [were] the freedom to make something new." Mangold, who is co-writing the screenplay with Beau Willimon, explained that they wanted to find "a way on the page to say something original." With his movie set to take place 25,000 years before any other Star Wars project, Mangold will seemingly be freed from decades of lore. "I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody," the director added,...

The 2025 Golden Globes Were High on Drama but Low on Politics
Image
Once again, the Golden Globes opened televised awards season in the run-up to a Donald Trump presidency. But this time, things looked a little different.

At the 2017 ceremony, for instance, Meryl Streep used her Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement awards speech to decry the incoming President. A year later, following reporting around sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry, including and especially by Harvey Weinstein, the ceremony was half a rally to plan new ways of talking about power in Hollywood and half a funeral for the old ways; at least that’s how it looked at home, with every female nominee dressed in black.

None of the problems discussed onstage by Meryl Streep or by Oprah Winfrey in 2018 or any number of others have gone away, exactly. (Quite the opposite: The president that the #Resistance movement has spent eight years battling won the popular vote last year.) But, with a grin-and-bear-it sense of chagrin,...

Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award: History of every recipient
Image
The Cecil B. DeMille Award is an annual prize given at the Golden Globes for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Ever year, the organization selects its recipients from a wide variety of actors, directors, writers, and producers who are primarily known for film.

The award is named for legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, who was its very first recipient in 1952. Only four times since 1952 has the award not been given: 1976, 2008, 2022, and 2024. The 2008 omission was due to the Writer’s Guild strike, which forced the HFPA to halt its annual telecast and defer that year’s recipient, Steven Spielberg, to the following year. The 2022 ceremony was canceled because of a controversy, and a 2024 recipient wasn’t named because of two new categories being created.

Tour through our photo gallery below to see a history of every recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, including the 2025 recipient Viola Davis, plus previous honorees Eddie Murphy,...

Golden Globe Carol Burnett Award list: Every recipient throughout history
Image
It’s the kind of honor that makes you tug at your ear.

Since 2019, the Golden Globes have been handing out the prestigious Carol Burnett Award for a talented individual who demonstrates “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen.” The award’s namesake, Carol Burnett, was the first person to receive the statuette, with the organization calling her a “television icon” for her storied career that began with the variety program The Carol Burnett Show.

“I’m really gobsmacked by this,” Burnett declared at the podium after learning the honorary award would bear her name. “Does this mean I get to accept it every year?” She went on to say, “Growing up … what fascinated me was the way the stars on the screen could make people laugh or cry, or sometimes both. And I wished and I hoped that maybe — just maybe — someday I could have the chance to do the same thing.

Diane Delano, ‘Northern Exposure’ and ‘Popular’ Actress, Dies at 67
Image
Diane Delano, the busy character actor who portrayed Officer Barbara Semanski on CBS’ Northern Exposure and the mean science teacher Bobbi Glass on The WB’s Popular, has died. She was 67.

Delano died Friday of cancer in her home in Sherman Oaks, her friend Stepfanie Kramer announced.

“She was big and bold and brought her sharp wit and perfect comic timing to every role,” Kramer said. “Her earthy and raucous presence enabled her to always own the room. She was one of a kind.”

As Rhonda Vasek, Delano had a romantic liaison with Douglas Brackman Jr. (Alan Rachins) in 1987 on the second season of NBC’s L.A. Law, and she guest-starred on such other shows as Falcon Crest, Cop Rock, Step by Step, Third Rock From the Sun, ER, Monk, Six Feet Under, Cold Case, The Bridge, 2 Broke Girls and PEN15.

James Mangold's Dcu and Star Wars Movies Receive a Long-Awaited Update
Image
James Mangold is set to join the DC and Star Wars universes. The filmmaker recently offered an update on the movies he intends to make for the franchises, revealing that both are still in the script phase.

Mangold, who is no stranger to blockbuster filmmaking, having directed films for the X-Men and Indiana Jones franchises, is attached to write and direct a Swamp Thing movie for DC Studios and a Star Wars prequel for Lucasfilm. While promoting his new movie A Complete Unknown, Mangold provided an update on both projects to Deadline, saying, "Working on them all. Don't know what's next. Don't know." He later expanded on the development process for his Star Wars movie (also for Deadline), sharing, "My partner [Beau Willimon] and I have been writing it. I don’t know what’s next because we haven’t gotten to the end of that process. We’re trying to finish a draft.

Why ‘The Brutalist’ Revived Alfred Hitchcock’s Favorite Format — and Why You Should See the Movie in 70mm to Appreciate It
Image
In the early 1950s, Hollywood introduced numerous widescreen formats in an effort to compete with the rise of television; the thinking was that the spectacle of CinemaScope, Cinerama, and other processes would give people incentive to leave their homes and return to the theater. Now, as exhibitors struggle with the rise of streaming and declining theater attendance, filmmaker Brady Corbet has revived the greatest of all widescreen formats and given today’s audiences the same reason to get off their couches that Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Curtiz, and other premier directors of their era gave in the 1950s.

Corbet opted to shoot “The Brutalist” in VistaVision, a process Paramount Pictures introduced in 1954 with the release of Michael Curtiz’s “White Christmas.” The format’s run was brief but glorious; it essentially fell out of regular use after Marlon Brando’s “One-Eyed Jacks” in 1961, but before that it was employed on several...

Ang Lee Will Receive Lifetime Achievement Honor at 2025 DGA Awards
Image
The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced that it will present Ang Lee with the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award at the 77th Annual DGA Awards on Feb. 8, 2025. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker is only the 37th director to receive the distinguished honor, awarded at the discretion of current and past DGA presidents, in the Guild’s 88-year history.

“Ang Lee is truly a master filmmaker,” DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter said in a statement. “For over 30 years, he has directed a dynamic body of work that boldly cuts across genres — from period drama to comedy, adventure to western, superhero to martial arts — always fearlessly taking on new challenges, never repeating himself and consistently achieving cinematic excellence.

“Through his films, Ang invites his audiences to explore complex characters that linger in your heart and mind long after the screen has gone dark,” Glatter continued. “From his earliest features like The Wedding Banquet...

Golden Globes Expansion Includes Separate Gala for Honorary Winners Viola Davis and Ted Danson; Luncheon for First-Time Nominees
Image
New Golden Globes owner Dick Clark Prods. is planning a major expansion of the franchise this year, adding two more events alongside the usual 2025 awards ceremony. For the first time, the Globes plans to throw a separate event to honor the recipients of its two largest honorary kudos: Cecil B. DeMille winner Viola Davis and Carol Burnett Award winner Ted Danson will be feted at a gala dinner on Friday, Jan. 3, two days before the main telecast on Sunday, Jan. 5. Also, the Globes is planning a luncheon to recognize first-time nominees.

Like the main Golden Globes ceremony, the Cecil B. DeMille/Carol Burnett gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton. The event won’t be televised, but excerpts from the moments that Davis and Danson are honored will be excerpted and included in a pre-taped package during the 82nd Annual Golden Globes broadcast.

Oscars: Denzel Washington would be the eighth actor to win at least three times
Image
Denzel Washington is on his way to making Oscar history for his performance as a former slave who plots to be the emperor of Rome in Paramount Pictures’ “Gladiator II,” the latest from director Ridley Scott. Right now, he has two Academy Awards to his name for “Glory” (1989) in Best Supporting Actor and “Training Day” (2001) in Best Actor. If he were to prevail for “Gladiator II” in early 2025, he would join an exclusive list of seven other people to win at least three times in the acting categories.

Here are the actors who have achieved this important Oscars milestone:

Katharine Hepburn (4)

Won Best Actress for “Morning Glory” (1933), “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967), “The Lion in Winter” (1968), and “On Golden Pond” (1981)

Frances McDormand (3*)

Won Best Actress for “Fargo” (1996), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017), and “Nomadland” (2020). *She also has a fourth Oscar for producing “Nomadland.”

Meryl Streep (3)

Won Best Actress for “Sophie’s Choice...

1 of Steven Spielberg's Best Movies Has a Secret Meaning Most Fans Missed
Image
Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest living directors still making movies, with a career that spans half a century with iconic works that have defined generations. His movies, from Jaws to Close Encounters of the Third Kind to Raiders of the Lost Ark to Saving Private Ryan, span genres and themes so robustly that he has made one of the most defining films in almost every facet of the film industry.

One of the most underrepresented eras of Spielberg's endlessly rewarding filmography — when it comes to retrospective pieces or film analysis articles — is his current one, a 2010s and 2020s defined by deeply affecting dramatic works like Lincoln, The Post, Bridge of Spies and West Side Story. But Spielberg's best film in years happens to also be his most recent one: the semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans. The Fabelmans is a masterpiece, a brilliant work that highlights the simultaneously beautiful...

Ridley Scott’s Panned Historical Epic 'Exodus: Gods and Kings' Streaming for Free
Image
Witness brothers Moses and Ramses facing off once again when director Ridley Scott’s historical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014) begins streaming absolutely free Dec. 1 on Tubi. Christian Bale and a bald Joel Edgerton lead the Biblical epic, which failed to find its footing with either the critics or fans when the movie parted the Red Sea in theaters 10 years ago. This undervalued historical flick also represents one of Scott’s lower-rated ventures on Rotten Tomatoes.

At the time of this writing, Exodus: Gods and Kings registers a mere 30% on the Tomatometer against 207 reviews posted to Rotten Tomatoes. Likewise, fans didn’t find much to praise either, because the Popcornmeter, formerly the Rt audience score, sits at a disappointing 35% on the strength of 50,000+ ratings. However, with a stronger “B-” CinemaScore, Gods and Kings managed to almost double its budget. It cost $140 million to produce Scott’s 2014 film, not accounting for its advertising and marketing campaign,...

Denzel Washington on ‘Gladiator II’: ‘This is the biggest film I’ve been on, it’s Cecil B. DeMille on steroids’ (Exclusive)
Image
Denzel Washington has appeared in countless major films during his career, including epics like “Glory,” “Malcolm X,” and “American Gangster.” But not even the two-time Oscar winner had experienced a set like what director Ridley Scott and production designer Arthur Max built for “Gladiator II.”

“This is the biggest film I’ve been on,” Washington said in a new featurette for “Gladiator II” that Gold Derby can exclusively reveal above. “It’s Cecil B. DeMille on steroids.”

Directed by Scott, “Gladiator II” is more than 20 years in the making: the filmmaker started developing the sequel just after the 2000 original film won Best Picture. Released last week, “Gliadator II” is already a hit – it topped $225 million at the global box office through Sunday – and is widely expected to compete for several Oscar nominations next year, including Best Picture, Best Director for Scott (who has rather infamously never won an Oscar despite...
