‘Lovers Lane’ Blu-ray Review – Arrow Video Gives New Life to Obscure Direct-to-Video Slasher Movie
Image
With roots in real-life murders, “The Hook” urban legend goes hand-in-hand — or should I say hand-in-hook? — with the slasher genre. After being referenced in ’80s slashers He Knows You’re Alone and Final Exam, it went on to at least partially inspire five slashers from the ’90s: Candyman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Campfire Tales, and Lovers Lane. Unfortunately, the latter is the least effective of the bunch.

To be fair, Lovers Lane was made independently for $500,000 — a fraction of the budget of the studio films — before being released direct to video in 1999. Directed by Jon Steven Ward and written by Geof Miller (DeepStar Six) and Rory Veal, the film is best remembered for being the film debut of Anna Faris, one year prior to her starring turn in Scary Movie. It was on this set that she met co-star Ben Indra, to whom she was...

Lovers Lane: Valentine’s Day slasher starring Anna Faris gets Blu-ray release
Image
The Valentine’s Day slasher Lovers Lane (watch it Here) isn’t a very popular movie, but that isn’t stopping the folks at Arrow Video from giving it a special edition Blu-ray release… although they’re doing a couple months after Valentine’s Day, so genre fans won’t be able to add it to their collections in time for the holiday this year. The street date for this Blu-ray release is April 25th.

Copies are available for pre-order on the Arrow Video website, and fans can choose from the standard edition and the limited edition, which comes with an exclusive slipcover.

Directed by Jon Ward from a screenplay written by Geof Miller and Rory Veal, Lovers Lane has the following synopsis: Passions are aroused and old wounds reopened in this sassy post-Scream teen slasher based on the urban legend of “The Hook”. A steamy secret tryst that was...

Frightfest 2014: ‘The Den’ Review
Stars: Melanie Papalia, David Schlachtenhaufen, Matt Riedy, Adam Shapiro, Victoria Hanlin, Matt Lasky, Brian Bell | Written by Zachary Donohue, Lauren Thompson | Directed by Zachary Donohue

It may seem, given my past reviews of found footage movies, that all I do is spew bile and vitriol when it comes to a lot of these particular movies but that doesn’t mean I’m not willing to still give the genre a a fair shake. Good job too, otherwise I would have missed out on a great example of it in The Den.

The idea of using the internet (and webcams) is nothing new in horror, it’s cropped up in dozens of movies, some good, a lot bad. With the advent of webcams, CCTV and “always-connected” devices, any good horror movie villain would – given that using the net is his or her modus operandi – have almost total control over their victims lives.

The Den Director Zachary Donohue Talks Voyeurism, Found Footage, and Webcams
The film The Den (review) brings a whole new, and much-needed, twist to the found-footage sub-genre of horror. Recently director and co-writer Zachary Donohue sat down with Dread Central to talk about his film.

For starters, Donohue discussed what he hoped to convey to the audience with The Den. "This is unlike any found footage movie you've ever seen," he said. "We wanted to create a movie that felt like you were on your own computer screen."

He added, "We wanted to convey this voyeuristic sense that maybe you shouldn't be watching this movie because you're privy to this character's emails, her chats. We really just wanted to tap into that idea of voyeurism."

But more than just peeping in on someone's life, Donohue also wanted The Den to portray the internet as it actually exists. "We wanted to create a funhouse," he said. "This is a movie about the internet,...

Hang On To Yourself | "True Blood: Evil is Going On" (S3/E12)
After a season of extreme highs and lows, Alan Ball gave us a decent finale that mostly straddled middle ground. Written by the man himself, Evil is Going On didn't leave us with the dramatic cliffhanger of last season (Bill's proposal and kidnapping), but it was a fairly even-tempered hour that tended more toward the highs than the lows. I do wish we'd been left hanging a little more desperately, but at the same time, I felt our appetites were whetted enough that we'll at least come back to see where Season 4 is headed. Witches are certainly as intriguing as vampires and definitely more interesting than the mostly lackluster werewolves and shape-shifters we've seen. As for fairies, I think we're still up in the air, but one of the highlights of the hour was seeing angry Sookie set her temper flying free. After a lot of misplaced trust and foolish decisions,...
