'That Kind of Existence Is Scary': Uzumaki's Junji Ito Reveals Why AI Is Now His Biggest Fear
Image
Junji Ito is by far one of the most iconic names in horror manga, having created internationally renowned works such as Tomie, Uzumaki and Remina, among others. While many of his works are set in the realm of nightmarish fantasy, one of Ito's greatest fears is rooted firmly in reality -- the reality of artificial intelligence.

Over the past few years, AI technology has become far more sophisticated, allowing people to generate highly-realistic videos and short films within seconds. In a recent interview with Aera, Junji Ito recalled an incident where he was reminded of just how advanced AI has become. "Recently, I saw videos of a polar bear and a baby playing, and a woman stroking a shark in the ocean. There are still some inaccurate parts, but the accuracy will continue to improve..." Ito stated. Concerns along these lines have been voiced by countless other anime and manga creators,...

10 Best Anime Based on Asian Folklore, Ranked
Image
It's no surprise that anime is filled with rich culture and has some of the most creative iterations of classic mythology and folklore. With how vast asian culture and mythology is, many series have taken inspiration from these well-known stories to create beautiful, memorable tales that leave lasting impressions on the viewers.

Some notable anime that take this approach are Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away and The Tale of Princess Kaguya, but there are some that aren't as popular that are just as fascinating and beautiful, such as Mononoke and Natsume's Book of Friends. Series based deeply on folklore and asian mythology often tell magical tales that are hard to find elsewhere.

Bleach's Original Captain and Lieutenant Pairs, Ranked
Image
The captains and lieutenants are an iconic part of Bleach. They're striking pairs and an essential part of what makes the Soul Society arc so compelling. The way each of these pairs interact with each other shows off both the wide variety of personalities that fit into this anime and hints at how the different Court Guard Squads function. All of them serve different functions for Soul Society, and they're all at varying levels of strength. These characters and their relationships are given due consideration to make them dynamic and interesting.

Just because one captain and lieutenant duo may be the strongest or get along the best doesn't mean they work together the best. In matters of teamwork, each of these pairs prioritize different things. Plus, some of them just aren't very good at it. The individual value of characters also only makes them so impactful. After all, a division...

Every Father Figure in Bleach, Ranked from Worst to Best
Image
With characters being slow to age in Bleach, there aren't that many fathers to go around. Of those few fathers, many of them aren't great. However, there are others who have stepped up to raise not just their own children, but their grandchildren, too. There are many ways to be a good dad, and more ways to be a bad one. This shonen shows a whole spectrum of dynamics, and they each impact all those involved. While each character's father is never the only influence in their life, this relationship has always been important.

Arguably including grandparents for raising their grandchildren, is pushing it for what qualifies in this list. Characters like Sora Inoe, who raised his sister, could have also been added. However, he's always been firmly considered Orihime Inoe's brother. Relationships in Bleach are often fluid and don't have to fall under strict boxes of how characters are...

10 Shonen Anime Characters That Could Almost Defeat Gojo
Image
Jujutsu Kaisen introduced anime fans to one of the most famously overpowered anime characters of all, the elite sorcerer Satoru Gojo. He has harnessed the power of infinity itself with his Limitless curse energy, and when he combines that with his masterful martial arts, Satoru Gojo is practically untouchable in battle. Satoru proved it many times in battle, such as when he trounced Jogo with the overwhelming power of his Domain Expansion.

Few anime characters stand a chance of defeating Satoru Gojo and his formidable power of Infinity, but a fair number could come close to challenging him. None of them have what it takes to finish the job, but they could still give Satoru Gojo a workout and push him harder than Jogo and the other curses in Mahito's squad ever could. These elite fighters are some of the strongest anime heroes and villains, whose powers often bend and...

Why Bleach’s Kurotsuchi Can’t Outshine Urahara in Thousand-Year Blood War
Image
At the end of Bleach Episode 402 "Baby, Hold Your Hand 2 [Never Ending My Dream]", Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi of Squad 12 and head of the Soul Reaper Research and Development Institute declares that he has surpassed Kisuke Urahara as a scientist. Kurotsuchi thinks the dream of a scientist should be the desire to create a complete soul on their own, and he has accomplished that goal through Nemu Kurotsuchi. However, while he has fulfilled his dream and begun to think about the Nemuri Project again, he isn't the only person working on artificial souls. Ururu Tsumugiya and Jinta Hanakari are both mod souls, another type of artificial soul. Kurotsuchi may be at the head of artificial soul development, but he doesn't have a huge lead, and that alone doesn't mean he's surpassed Urahara.

Both of these scientists work on a wide variety of projects, but more of Urahara's have been shown off in the series. He...

Bleach Actor Suggests a Major Wedding Is Coming For the Anime at Last
Image
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has made a name for itself with all the major additions it's made to the manga's story, and it looks like fans are in for at least one more big change: a wedding. Once skipped over in the manga, fans may get to see this wedding in animated form.

When Thousand-Year Blood War began to be adapted, fans were eager to see the new series specifically because the ending of the manga was so rushed that it skipped over some very important scenes. While changes were minimal at first, they've grown more significant with each cour, and now the currently airing episodes have featured some major new scenes, particularly involving Uryu, making him into a character as important as he was always stated to be. Fans expect the fourth cour to include a substantial amount of added content, based on how much manga is left to adapt,...

Bleachs 400th Episode Falls Short of Perfection
Image
This review contains mild spoilers for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 - The Conflict, Episode 8, "Baby Hold Your Hand."

There was considerable hype for this week's episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and for good reason. Not only was the episode going to adapt Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi's much-anticipated duel against the Schutzstaffel's most mysterious member, Pernida Parnkgjas, but it was Bleach's 400th anime episode. Needless to say, expectations were high for the franchise's historic moment. For the most part, "Baby, Hold Your Hand" lived up to the hype. However, this doesn't mean it was a perfect episode.

If the episode were judged solely by its production value and how good of a job Pierrot Films' animators did, then it's perfect. But when it's viewed as a part of a larger war and story, "Baby, Holy Your Hand" comes lacking in a few key areas. The fight itself is everything Bleach fans ever dreamed of,...

Jojo Creator Hirohiko Araki Shocked To Find His Art Perfectly Imitated By AI; Warns Of Its Increasing Threat To Manga Industry
Ryûsei Nakao
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga creator Hirhiko Araki has expressed his shock and concern after discovering that his art was flawlessly imitated by AI.

In the second chapter of New Manga Techniques, released on Nov 15, 2024, Araki shared his experience of stumbling upon an AI-generated piece of artwork that was so precise it was almost indistinguishable from his own style.

“Recently, I came across a drawing and thought. ‘This is something I drew, right?’ I was shocked to find out it was actually created by Al. When I draw manga, I add subtle, personal elements that make the work uniquely mine. This AI-generated piece even mimicked details like the way I draw eyelashes, so precisely that it was almost impossible to tell it apart from my work,” he noted.

He noted that if it were based on his more recent works, he would have been able to differentiate it immediately.

However,...

This Dragon Ball Character Deserves to Beat Black Frieza
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Frieza has a long history with the Saiyans that dates back to before the earliest episodes of Dragon Ball, before Goku or Vegeta were even born. In fact, Frieza was the main reason Goku got sent to Earth to begin with: Bardock only sent his son away as a means to escape Frieza's destruction of Planet Vegeta. In that way, Frieza was the source of his own downfall on Namek in Dbz, because that same low-class Saiyan boy ended up becoming a Super Saiyan and defeating him.

As poetic as Frieza's original defeat by Goku was, there's still some unfinished business left between Frieza and Vegeta that should finally be settled in Dragon Ball Super. Unlike Goku, who was still too young to remember his family or his life as a Saiyan before he was sent to planet Earth, Vegeta was a different story.

'My Voice Was Being Sold Without My Permission': Dragon Ball Star Takes a Stand Against Unauthorized AI
Image
A coalition of Japanese voice actors have united in protest of unauthorized AI generation and the threat it poses to performers within the anime industry. In a newly-released video, Ryusei Nakao -- the voice of Frieza in Toei Animation's Dragon Ball series -- states that his voice is one among many that are being "sold without permission" on the internet.

Per Inside Games and AnimeAnime, 26 voice actors recently joined together to launch a new voice actor volunteer group called "Nomore Unauthorized AI Generation," which was created to spread awareness about generative AI voice theft. In addition to Nakao, participating actors include Yuki Kaji, Koichi Yamadera and Jun Fukuyama, among numerous others. In Nomore's newly released launch video, Nakao highlights many of the biggest problems facing today's voice actors due to the usage of generative AI.

Yūki Kaji Teams Up with Code Geass and Hunter x Hunter Voice Actors After AI Becomes the Latest Threat to the Anime Industry
Image
Generative AI is being surrounded by controversy lately. Sure, it can entertain viewers by having them listen to their favorite actors voice a line they wouldn’t normally say in a clip. However, it violates copyright laws, as these content creators use generative AI without getting permission from the owner of the copyrighted voice.

AI caused quite the disruption for the voice acting community in general, since it can literally imitate or create new voices for videos and television. It can potentially replace humans to voice act and companies that have portions of the copyrights can use these voices for their own benefits. This has been going out of hand and several voice actors in Japan have stepped up to address the problem.

Popular Japanese Voice Actors Band Together To Fight Against Unauthorized AI Voice Cloning
Ryûsei Nakao
In a significant move to combat the rising threat of unauthorized AI voice cloning, a coalition of popular Japanese voice actors has launched the “Nomore Unauthorized AI Generation” campaign on Oct 15, 2024.

This initiative aims to raise awareness about the exploitation of their voices, which are often replicated for commercial purposes without their knowledge or consent.

The campaign’s official X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok accounts went live on Oct 15.

A video posted across the platforms expresses the group’s concerns, stating, “Readings, songs, and even our voices, which we did not record, have been published online and are sometimes being sold. Our voices are our business tools, our lives, and an important part of ourselves that we have grown up with. Even if it was done by a fan who wanted to hear more of our voices, it is not pleasant to use it without permission.“

The video features 26 well-known voice actors,...

Soul Reapers Who Should Have Been Promoted To Squad Zero
Image
Most of the Soul Reapers in Bleach belong to the Gotei 13 - the primary military branch of the Soul Society. Each squad is led by a Captain and a Lieutenant, and these individuals typically possess immense spiritual power. Squad Zero is said to be stronger than the Gotei 13 combined, which is impressive considering the fact that the squad consists of just five members. Several Soul Reapers could have made Squad Zero even stronger if they were given the opportunity.

Squad Zero protects the Soul King, so each member needs to be extremely powerful. Very few Soul Reapers get promoted to Squad Zero, and these promotions typically go to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Soul Society's history. Most of these Squad Zero candidates are experienced Gotei 13 Captains, and many of them can decimate a small army singlehandedly.

The True Story Behind ‘Dragon Ball Z’s Most Evil Villain
Image
Art imitates life in the funniest ways and anime is no exception in spite of the ridiculous over-the-top energy pulsing through the genre at all times, which is why it should only come as a slight surprise that one of anime’s most iconic villains, Frieza (Ryūsei Nakao) from Dragon Ball Z fame, is actually based off of real estate speculators during the Japanese asset price bubble between 1986 and 1991. If Godzilla is after all based on the fear of radiation poisoning as a result of atomic bomb testing, it makes sense that Dragon Ball series creator Akira Toriyama would base his own big bad off of a very real crisis that led to what was known in Japan as ‘the Lost Decades.’ It’s the equivalent of basing Thanos off of the 2008 financial crisis; hardly a bad idea, as there’s hardly a better target to funnel an audience’s...

How Dragon Ball Super: Broly Fits into the Timeline

The events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly finally has an official place in the manga's timeline.

According to Screenrant, Chapter 93 of the Dragon Ball Super manga revealed that Frieza's recruitment of Broly and the juggernaut's epic showdown with Goku and Vegeta occurred reasonably quickly after the conclusion of the Tournament of Power.
