First Look At Mary Poppins Returns
With filming currently taking place in London, Emily Blunt, in what feels like an almost perfect piece of casting, steps into the shoes of everyone’s favourite magical nanny with Mary Poppins Reurns, and the first image from the movie has come our way, giving us our first look at new Ms. Poppins. While there isn’t much to go on here, the costume work is pretty spot-on, and that magical hand bag looks pretty darn sweet. Set in 1930's Depression-era London, the movie sees the Banks children Michael and Katie (played here by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) all grown up, and in need of their one time nanny once again to find the joy and wonder missing in their lives. With Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into The Woods) at the helm, the long overdue sequel brings together a fantastic cast that also includes Lin Manuel Miranda, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke,...

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land: Cantando Estações (2016)
2017 Oscars Predictions: Who Should Win, Who Will Win
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land: Cantando Estações (2016)
The battle lines are drawn: It's La La Land, a musical fantasy about white lovers in Hollywood, versus Moonlight, a searing drama about black youth surviving on the streets of Miami. That contest is symptomatic of how serious Oscar is – or isn't – about diversity. After two years in which not a single black actor showed up among the acting nominees, this year's crop includes seven actors of color: Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis, Naomie Harris, Ruth Negga, Dev Patel, Octavia Spencer and Denzel Washington.

"Wow, what a difference a year makes,...

‘Tim & Eric’ Star Tim Heidecker’s New Song Approves of Punching Neo-Nazis in the Face
Richard Spencer, a prominent member of the so-called “alt-right” who has called for “peaceful ethnic cleansing,” was punched in the face following Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday. As you can imagine, a wave of sympathy (read: gifs, memes and hashtags) immediately followed after video of the incident made its way online. Among the many to chime in is Tim Heidecker of “Tim and Eric,” who recorded a song called “Richard Spencer.” Listen below.

Spencer — who, contrary to said video evidence, tweeted on Friday that he “can take a punch” — has called Martin Luther King, Jr. a “fraud and degenerate” in the past. He also, in case you’ve already forgotten, got his clock cleaned a couple days ago. Heidecker’s piano ballad chronicling the event revolves around a few key lines: “You can’t wish anyone dead,...

Sony Animation Goes Diverse with Miles Morales as Spider-Man and Lin-Manuel Miranda Musical ‘Vivo’
Patrick Stewart, Sean Hayes, James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Rob Riggle, and T.J. Miller in Emoji: O Filme (2017)
Sony Pictures Animation, which has fallen on hard times in recent years, highlighted diversity and female empowerment as part of its comeback at Wednesday’s slate preview in Culver City. The biggest news was confirmation that Miles Morales, the mixed race web-slinging teen (African-American and Hispanic), will star in the untitled “Spider-Man” feature coming December 21, 2018.

Morales, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli to succeed the late Peter Parker in the comics, has already become a TV animation staple on Disney Xd’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” (initially voiced by Donald Glover).

The animated “Spider-Man” marks a return to Spa for Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), who directed “The Lego Movie” and are currently making the “Han Solo” standalone “Star Wars” feature.

In a pre-recorded video message from London, Lord said, “What inspired us the most is that anyone can wear the mask.

Trent Reznor Reveals Why the Internet Causes Young Musicians to Create ‘Shit’
Trent Reznor
When he isn’t composing music for filmmakers like David Fincher (“The Social Network”), Peter Berg (“Patriots Day”) or Ken Burns (“The Vietnam War”), Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor does what a lot of artists do: rage against opinionated internet users. In a new interview with Yahoo! Music, Reznor does just that — especially since he thinks it results in “made to please, vegan restaurant patron-type shit.”

Read More: ‘Patriots Day’ Soundtrack: Stream Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Moody, Ominous Score

“What has crept in is that everyone’s a commentator now,” Reznor laments. “The internet is giving voice to everybody thinking that someone gives a shit what they have to say and they have the right. I think, in general, that has created a toxic environment for artists and led to some very safe music. Artists are trying to make music to please the tastemakers that tell the sheep what to like.

Radiohead and Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Daydreaming’ Video: Watch a Wild Fan Theory Analysis Video
Jonny Greenwood
Few bands of the last 20 years have inspired a more devoted following than Radiohead. That devotion is on full display all over the internet, most recently in a 14-minute dissection of the Paul Thomas Anderson–directed music video for “Daydreaming,” which gives the “Room 237” treatment (read: somewhere between dissertation and conspiracy theory) to the two artists’ collaboration. Watch below.

Read More: Paul Thomas Anderson Directs Radiohead’s ‘The Numbers’ Music Video

“Like many great works of art,” begins Vimeo user Rishi Kaneria, “Radiohead’s latest music video makes you struggle for its inner meaning. It is a film that is stubbornly ambiguous and resolute at guarding its personal secrets.” Among his observations and theories: “Daydreaming” is 6:24 long, and 2+4=6; the video is a metaphor for the doors Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has had to walk through in his life, unsure of what awaits on the other side; “Daydreaming” is...

Too Few Latinos Honored at Golden Globes Shows Lack of Opportunities, Says National Hispanic Media Coalition
Meryl Streep
Just as Obama’s election did not create a post-racial America, neither can Golden Globes for “Moonlight” and “Atlanta” create a post-racial Hollywood.

The dearth of Latino nominees at the Golden Globes proves opportunities for Latinos in Hollywood are far too limited, according to a statement made by Alex Nogales, the president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, a media advocacy and civil rights organization for the advancement of Latinos.

In a succinct and nuanced statement, Nogales acknowledged the major wins for actors and filmmakers of color while emphasizing the continued importance of working to create inclusive projects — both in front of and behind the camera.

The statement reads:

“We congratulate the creatives of color who were nominated and who won Golden Globes last night–they have broken barriers in an industry that has been slow to change.

Tyrus Wong, Disney Painter and ‘Bambi’ Visionary, Dies at 106
Bambi (1942)
2016 isn’t done with us yet. Tyrus Wong, the artist who provided the visual inspiration for “Bambi,” died yesterday. Unlike some of the other celebrities who passed away over the course of the last year (and especially the last week), Wong at least lived a full life: He was 106 at the time of his death. The news was announced on his Facebook page.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Tyrus Wong,” reads the post. “Tyrus died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving daughters Kim, Kay and Tai-Ling. He was 106 years old.” Wong emigrated from China to the Bay Area when he was nine years old, and his concept art for “Bambi” so impressed Disney that they shaped the aesthetic direction of the animated classic around it. We Fixed The Hollywood Reporter’s Animation Roundtable
Just to prove how easy it is.

On Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter released its 2016 Animation Roundtable to the world. That, in itself, isn’t particularly newsworthy (aside from the fact that animation is awesome, of course) but…well, here, have a look for yourself:

First, the picture: Why, yes, that is a panel consisting of all white men. It’s not the first time this has happened and it infuriatingly won’t be the last (but at least this Tumblr account and also this one will always have fresh content).

Second, the headline: “Seth Rogen and 6 More on Avoiding Ethnic Stereotypes and How to ‘Break the Mold’ of Princesses.” We can’t think of anyone more qualified to speak to ethnic stereotypes and breaking the mold of princesses than a group of white men. Totally.

There’s absolutely zero excuse for this: if you’ve somehow ended up with an all male and/or all white panel...

‘Drunk History’ and ‘Hamilton’: Derek Waters on Getting Lin-Manuel Miranda Loaded for Comedy Central
Drunk History (2013)
While Lin-Manuel Miranda has won a Pulitzer Prize and is now on the verge of an Egot, it’s unlikely that his appearance on Comedy Central’s “Drunk History” will win him any awards. Except, that is, if our hearts count as trophies.

For, even in a year packed with what can only be unimaginable, life-changing experiences, the 35-year-old multi-hyphenate is having a bit of a moment right now. If you went to the movies last weekend, you may have one of the songs he co-wrote for Disney’s “Moana” stuck in your head. And he’s also joined an elite circle of people whose lives have been forever bettered by direct interaction with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, cameoing in videos for The Rock’s official YouTube channel.

Rodolfo - A Rena do Nariz Vermelho (1948)
‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ Honest Trailer Points Out the Bizarre in This Classic Cartoon
Rodolfo - A Rena do Nariz Vermelho (1948)
Just in time to kick off the holiday season, the fellows over at Screen Junkies released an Honest Trailer poking fun at the Christmas classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Set to the tune of the popular Rudolph carol, the four-minute video points out the bizarre in the 1964 stop motion animated special, that according to them is “so much weirder” than they remember.

“We thought we’d sing this famous carol if it were honest about what actually happens in the film,” the voiceover says, before singing about how the main reindeers are cruel to Rudolph and he’s sent to exile.

“This prepubescent reindeer, had a neon whistling nose. And when someone else sees it, their tiny little mind explodes,” the song goes. “All of the other reindeers treat him like he’s got the plague. They send him into exile ‘cause this Santa’s full of rage.”

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in Um Limite Entre Nós (2016)
When an August Wilson play is adapted for the big screen with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis reprising two powerhouse roles that won them Tony Awards on Broadway, it’s almost impossible for there not to be Oscar buzz. Such is the case with “Fences,” whose first teaser left a bold impression at the end of September.

The new official trailer is bound to raise anticipation through the roof, as it features some of the most intense work of both actors’ film career. Davis recently confirmed she’d be campaigning for Best Supporting Actress, and from the looks of it she’s a bonafide frontrunner. Read our review of the drama right here.

‘Drunk History’: Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda Get Tipsy and Narrate Alexander Hamilton’s Story
Drunk History (2013)
Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner’s series “Drunk History” has a simple, but effective setup: An inebriated comedian recounts an event from American history and then a group of actors enact the anecdote lip synching all the dialogue. The series has covered everything from the Haymarket Affair to the Lewis and Clark expedition to the first space walk. But an upcoming episode of the series will tackle the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers. Who better to narrate such a story than Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton”? Watch a short clip from the episode below, starring Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”) as Hamilton, Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) as Aaron Burr, Bokeem Woodbine (“Fargo”) as George Washington and Tony Hale (“Veep”) as James Monroe.

‘The Happys’ Trailer: Making It in Hollywood Takes An Unexpected Turn in Charming Festival Favorite — Watch
Janeane Garofalo, Melissa McBride, Arturo Del Puerto, Amanda Bauer, Jack DePew, and Rhys Ward in The Happys (2016)
What could possibly be the worst part about breaking into Hollywood? The long hours, the stressful auditions, the tiny checks, the constant competition, the lack of support? How about all of that stuff, coupled with a very unexpected revelation about your far more successful partner?

Such is the problem at the heart of Tom Gould and John Serpe’s “The Happys,” which stars Amanda Bauer (“The Myth of the American Sleepover”) as a sunny Midwesterner looking to make it big in the entertainment industry, an already pie-in-the-sky plan made all the worse by the realization that her “movie star” boyfriend is just not that into her. ‘Goldbricks in Bloom’ Deleted Scene: Zosia Mamet Needs Her Kale Chips in Danny Sangra’s Social Satire — Watch
Goldbricks in Bloom (2016)
No, youth of America, parmesan is not a vegan food item. But damn if that doesn’t stop Zosia Mamet from asking for them from a presumably beleaguered bodega owner in a very funny deleted scene from Danny Sangra’s “Goldbricks in Bloom.” Mamet toplines the feature, which smartly and sharply upbraids some of the worst bits of current millennial culture. Kale chips? Just the tip of the iceberg.

The film is Sangra’s feature debut, and is described as “a social satire that explores what it means to be an artist today by interweaving the story of a self-obsessed group of disenchanted young creatives with the mythic rise and fall of a New York painter.” Over the past six years, Sangra has made over 30 short films, a number of which feature interconnected characters and stories. “Goldbricks” mines that for more fun, as it pushes together some of his previous creations.

Liam Neeson in Silêncio (2016)
Passion projects from auteur filmmakers are always a reason to get excited, but when it’s a Christianity epic Martin Scorsese has been trying to make for nearly three decades, it’s almost impossible to contain one’s anticipation. “Silence,” which only got its Christmas release date last month, is one of the last major question marks in this year’s awards race, but the first trailer teases something we all pretty much expect: This epic is probably going to be one behemoth of a masterpiece.

Britannias Beat the Drum for British and American Academy Awards
How do you get someone to schlep to Los Angeles, decked out in black tie, to accept an awards tribute? You grab them when they have something to promote—and a studio willing to support costs of video, travel, styling and table.

This year’s British Academy Britannia Awards were enjoyably hosted by Brit comedian Ben “Doc” Brown Smith, who raps well enough to audition for “Hamilton” and was eager to raise his stateside profile.

The winner of the night’s big prize, the Albert R. Broccoli Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment, Samuel L. Jackson, is an awards perennial, with directors Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee happy to sing his praises on the Tribute video. This year, he was promoting Warner Bros.’ “Kong: Skull Island,” which was why his elegant costar and recent Best Actress Oscar-winner Brie Larson did the presenting honors.

Similarly, super-pro Tom Hanks riffed off a...

2017 Oscars: Record 70 Animated Shorts Vie for Shortlist of Ten
This year the Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation branch has deemed eligible a record 70 animated shorts to vie for the shortlist of ten, followed by the final five nominations for the Oscar. That’s 10 more than last year’s 60.

The number of qualified shorts has been growing steadily, from 33 in 2010 to 58 in 2014.

Members of the branch who volunteer to serve will now view the shorts and rate the films. The ten best-rated shorts will go on the shortlist, to be revealed in November. A larger group will check those out and cull the final five which will be announced on Tuesday, January 24. The shorts will be sent to the entire Academy, who will vote on the winner.

Cartoon Brew got hold of the list of qualified contenders, and assesses what they consider to be the best of the best, including trailers. The Academy has not released that list.

Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins (1964)
Meryl Streep is circling a supporting role in the upcoming Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” Variety reports. The three-time Oscar winner is likely to close a deal for the role of Mary Poppins’s cousin Topsy, who was not in the 1964 original film.

If cast in the Disney production, Streep would be reunited with her “Into the Woods” co-star Emily Blunt, director Rob Marshall, and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The 2014 fairy tale story earned Streep her 19th Oscar nomination.

Blunt is set to play the role of Poppins in the film alongside “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will play the role of Jack, a street lamplighter who was also not in the original “Mary Poppins.”

Here’s the official synopsis for the film: In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss.

Bww TV: Broadway Sessions Satisfies with Tributes to Hamilton!
Broadway's biggest hit said goodbye to some of it's biggest hitters this week. Hamilton bid adieu to Tony-winning star and writer Lin Manuel Miranda, Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr, Tony nominee Phillipa Soo and 'The Bullet' herself, Ariana DeBose. That's a big change for the blockbuster and has, doubtless, left several Hamilton devotees heartbroken. We figured it'd be fitting to take a look back at some Sessions performances from the Tony-winning score that has wiggled its way into our heads and playlists and won't let go nor do we want it to. Featuring The Color Purple's Akron Watson, Elf's Paul Ianiello, Avenue Q's Imari Hardon, country-fried acoustic trio Siren, new comer Ellis Dawson and Hamilton's own Angelia standby- Alysha Deslorieux.

Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez and Lin Manuel Miranda performed their new song “Love Makes the World Go Round” on NBC’s “Today” show to honor the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. The duo sang the song to an audience filled with 50 survivors and victims’ family members. Lopez kicked off the show in an all white outfit standing on a video screen with moving graphics like hearts and a rainbow colored world. The song started off with an excerpt from Miranda’s speech at the Tony’s last month. “Love is love is love is love is love,” but he didn’t join JLo on.

The Weinstein Company Moves Alicia Vikander–Starring ‘Tulip Fever’ Far Away From Awards Season
Alicia Vikander in Amor & Tulipas (2017)
If you’ve been wondering why you’ve heard so little about “Tulip Fever” despite it ostensibly being scheduled for release next week, wonder no more. The Weinstein Company has officially moved the drama starring Alicia Vikander back to February of next year, the sort of move usually regarded as signifying a lack of confidence in a film’s prospects — especially one formerly touted as a potential awards contender.

The Weinstein Company declined to comment on the decision, but a source with knowledge of the situation said the company changed the date due to marketplace conditions, having looked at the calendar and decided that February 24, 2017 was a better release date than July 15, 2016 based on the market.

A romantic drama adapted from Deborah Moggach’s novel of the same name, the film stars Vikander as a young...

Rex Harrison and Margaret Lockwood in Gestapo (1940)
Wyatt Cenac’s New Show on Seeso Is a Perfect Blend of Comedy and Observation — ‘Night Train’ Review
Rex Harrison and Margaret Lockwood in Gestapo (1940)
Every week, comedian Wyatt Cenac and friends perform stand-up in Brooklyn for a show entitled “Night Train with Wyatt Cenac.” Cenac fans from outside of the New York area were out of luck — until now, thanks to the comedy subscription service Seeso, which is offering online viewers a front row seat.

Seeso, which is owned by NBC Universal, debuts six ninety-minute episodes today. Filmed in front of a live audience at Littlefield in Brooklyn, “Night Train” is hosted by Cenac, while also featuring an eclectic mix of some of the most exciting comedians in New York, from up-and-comers to established names. The show capture’s Cenac’s sensibilities; proudly black, reluctantly hipster, Ellen DeGeneres clean and always funny.

Cenac served as a writer and correspondent for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” from 2008-2012. However, when Cenac called Stewart out for doing a “voice” in a Herman Cain bit, long-simmering...

20 Best, Worst and Wtf Moments at 2016 Tony Awards
Leslie Odom Jr.
On a night that was marked by tragedy — and occurring mere hours after news broke of the deadly mass shooting in Orlando, Florida — the Tonys provided a much-needed bit of levity. The performers and honorees didn't shy away from speaking about the shocking events of the day, but the overall mood was one of celebration. Part of the credit goes to the master of ceremonies James Corden, best known as the goofy host CBS's Late Late Show, yet still a dorky theater kid at heart; his charming, cheerful persona brought...

The Cantina Song From Star Wars: The Force Awakens Has Finally Been Released (And It's Awesome)
When Han, Chewie, Rey, Finn, and Bb-8 visited Maz Kanata's castle in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we got to hear just a snippet of some very catchy Cantina music, but the full version of the song has never been officially released....until now! Currently available on iTunes, "Jabba Flow" was written by Lin Manuel Miranda and J.J. Abrams, and performed by the former. Needless to say, it's very, catchy! Abrams' decision to include a piece of music like this was another way of him paying homage to A New Hope, and I think it's fair to say that "Jabba Flow" is worthy of sitting alongside that movie's "Cantina Band." Return of the Jedi also featured a pretty catchy tune in Jabba's Palace, and the song below is actually being sung in Huttese so it's probably something he'd enjoy if he wasn't, you know, dead.   ...

John Goodman, Haley Joel Osment, Mae Whitman, and Connor Funk in Mogli, o Menino Lobo 2 (2003)
Disney Confirms Jungle Book 2, Maleficent 2 and a Lot More
John Goodman, Haley Joel Osment, Mae Whitman, and Connor Funk in Mogli, o Menino Lobo 2 (2003)
Disney has secured five release dates spanning between 2017 and 2019 for new live-action fairy tale movies. Although we don't know exactly which movies will open in these particular slots, two of them will be The Jungle Book 2 and Maleficent 2. There are a number of other projects in various stages of development at Disney, so we'll have to wait and see which other family adventures claim these dates. For now, all we know are the dates themselves.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the first date, July 28, 2017, actually replaces a previous untitled project set to open on December 22, 2017, one week after Star Wars: Episode VIII. The other dates are April 6, 2018, August 3, 2018, December 25, 2018 and December 20, 2019. The July 28, 2017 project will go up against Sony's Jumanji reboot, while all of the other unspecified projects don't have any direct competition in those release dates yet. But that will surely change. Disney had previously set...

The Age of Lin-Manuel Miranda Continues with 'Mary Poppins' Sequel
Lin Manuel Miranda is possibly the most beloved man in all of the world right now. Not only is he incredibly talented, but he has a very addictive and positive personality. And the fact that he created and stars in Hamilton, a Broadway play receiving nothing but praise, does nothing but help him thrive. So, it was bound to happen that he'd get an impressive gig alongside fellow actors in a big Hollywood film.

This time around he gets to star alongside Emily Blunt in a Mary Poppins sequel. He will play a character known as "Jack", who was originally known in 1964 as Bert, and was played by Dick Van Dyke. But the hype train doesn't stop there for Miranda, as he'll also get to help with the music for Poppins.

All-in-all, if you're a fan of the actor, you're probably just as happy as he is that he's making...
