Voiced the Cadbury's Caramel Bunny in the British adverts.

Since 1968, her partner has been Australian academic Heather Sutherland. Became an Australian citizen on 26 January 2013. She was part of the Australia Day ceremony attended by Prime Minister Julia Gillard (who was born in Wales).

Despite playing their grandmother in A Época da Inocência (1993), Margoyles is just 17 years older than Michelle Pfeiffer and 30 years older than Winona Ryder.

Of Belarussian-Jewish descent, she is the daughter of Joseph (1899-1995) and Ruth (née Walters) Margolyes (1905-1974). She took time out of her career to nurse her mother and spent a quarter of a million pounds on full-time care for her father. She supports charities for disabled people and their careers.

Aged 21 or 22 she was a contestant on ITV quiz show 'University Challenge' representing Newnham College, Cambridge in 1963. Although the videotape no longer exists, still off-air photographs of her on the team panel do survive and can be found online. Apparently she swore after answering a question wrong and this had to be edited out of the broadcast tape.

She underwent heart valve replacement surgery in 2023.

When asked in an interview which of her own film was her personal favorite, she named Sunshine - O Despertar de um Século (1999) starring Ralph Fiennes.
