The Only Dick Van Dyke Movie That Has A Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Dick Van Dyke is a national treasure. For the better part of a century, the comedic actor has been entertaining audiences with his endlessly flexible physical comedy, his sunny personality, and his big heart. He makes everything he's in better, which means there's really no such thing as a bad Dick Van Dyke movie. Plenty of Van Dyke's films are crowd-pleasers, but only one was ever a certified, unanimously loved critic-pleaser -- at least according to Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie in question is "Divorce American Style," a comedy from sitcom producing powerhouse Bud Yorkin. Yorkin is best-known today as the producing partner of Norman Lear and one half of the team behind groundbreaking shows like "All in the Family," "Sanford and Son," and "Maude." Four years before "All in the Family" hit the airwaves, though, Yorkin was seated in the director's chair for "Divorce American Style," a breakup comedy penned...

Image
“I loved Norman Lear with all my heart,” filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner posted on X.

Tributes have been pouring in for Norman Lear, the legendary producer, writer and political activist who died at his Los Angeles home from natural causes on Tuesday, aged 101.

Every major broadcast network in the US took the rare steop of simultaneously airing an in memoriam card in Lear’s honour on Wednesday evening.

“I loved Norman Lear with all my heart,” filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, who played Michael “Meathead” Stivic in Lear’s seminal 1970s sitcom All In The Family, posted on X.

Norman Lear, Pioneering TV Producer of ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons,’ Dead at 101
Image
Norman Lear, the groundbreaking TV producer who smashed boundaries with politicized sitcoms such as All in the Family, helped diversify network television with shows The Jeffersons and Good Times, and used the half-hour comedy to address social issues and taboo, hot-button topics, died Tuesday at his Los Angeles home. He was 101. Lear’s rep, Lara Bergthold, confirmed his death to The New York Times.

“Norman lived a life in awe of the world around him,” his family wrote in a statement. “He marveled at his cup of coffee every morning,...

Murray Schisgal Dies: Oscar-Nominated ‘Tootsie’ Screenwriter, Broadway Playwright Was 93
Image
Murray Schisgal, whose writing brought a 1964 Tony Award nomination for the Broadway play Luv and a 1982 Oscar nomination for the hit Dustin Hoffman comedy Tootsie, died Oct. 1 at a nursing home in Port Chester, New York. He was 93.

His death was announced by his son Zach Schisgal. A cause of death was not disclosed.

Schisgal, a Brooklyn native, first came to public notice in 1963 with the popular Off Broadway plays The Typists and The Tiger. Two years later his Broadway debut, the absurdist hit comedy Luv, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play and for Best Author of a Play. Directed by Mike Nichols, Luv starred Eli Wallach, Ann Jackson and Alan Arkin.

A 1967 film version of Luv, starring Jack Lemmon, Elaine May and Peter Falk, directed by Clive Donner, was largely ignored, as was 1967’s The Tiger Makes Out, the film version of Schisgal’s play The Tiger starring Wallach and Jackson,...

Freebie and the Bean
Here’s how one pushed the limits of good taste in 1974. James Caan and Alan Arkin run the gamut of racist, raunchy, sexist & homophobic jokes as bad boy cops breaking the rules, and director Richard Rush delivers some impressive, expensive action stunts on location in San Francisco. Does it get a pass because it’s ‘outrageous?’ The public surely thought so. If the star chemistry works the excess won’t matter. With Valerie Harper, Loretta Swit and Jack Kruschen.

Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis: Balada de um Homem Comum (2013)
Joel and Ethan Coen's 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Presented at the NYFF
Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis: Balada de um Homem Comum (2013)
As per Joel Coen, “Llewyn Davis (played by Oscar Isaac), is a made up character, with Real music from the time period.” Step into the smoky “Gaslight Cafe” in 1961 where Llewyn is up on stage with a spotlight on him singing, “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me.”

“The Gaslight Cafe” was an American coffee house located in the basement of 116 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village. The Gaslight (alternatively known as “The Village Gaslight”) opened in 1958 and was a well known venue for folk music and other musical acts, until it closed in 1971.

When Llewyn finishes his set, he is told that there is a man wearing a dark suit in the back alley who wishes to meet him. As he approaches him, he gets beat up. Poor Llewyn, he’s down on his luck, and, in my opinion, born a little too early. Perhaps if he had been playing his songs in the late ’60′s, he would probably have been better received, but because it is 1961, most of the other acts, like “Jim and Jean,” still have a Very clean cut look, personality and sound.

Broke, couch-surfing, locked out of the apartment with his friend’s cat, trying to get singing gigs, a manager who doesn’t help him, an ex-girlfriend who wants nothing to do with him, Llewyn is looking for a break.

Funniest scene: Adam Driver’s singing role as Al Cody in “Please Mr. Kennedy.”

Musical Performances

1. Hang Me, Oh Hang Me – Oscar Isaac

(Traditional; Arranged by Oscar Isaac & T Bone Burnett) 3:26

2. Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song) – Oscar Isaac & Marcus Mumford (Traditional; Arranged by Marcus Mumford, Oscar Isaac, T Bone Burnett) 3:01

3. The Last Thing on My Mind – Stark Sands with Punch Brothers (Tom Paxton) 3:35

4. Five Hundred Miles – Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, Stark Sands (Hedy West) 3:27

5. Please Mr. Kennedy – Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver (Ed Rush, George Cromarty, T Bone Burnett, Justin Timberlake, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen) 1:59

6. Green, Green Rocky Road – Oscar Isaac (Len Chandler & Robert Kaufman) 3:18

7. The Death of Queen Jane – Oscar Isaac (Music by Dáithí Sproule; Lyrics: Traditional) 3:58

8. The Roving Gambler – The Down Hill Strugglers with John Cohen (Traditional; Arranged and Adapted by The Down Hill Strugglers) 3:05

9. The Shoals of Herring – Oscar Isaac with Punch Brothers (Ewan MacColl)

Small Interviews

Q: Why do you make movies about failures?

A: Joel Coen: “Because all the success stories have all been done.”

A: T-Bone Burnett: “Even if the scene or moment is supposed to be bad, the music has to be great.”

Q: How did you want it to look?

A: We actually shot more in the East Village than the West Village. Some streets in the East Village aren’t as built up as the modern day MacDougal Street. We wanted something to feel more like it would have in 1961. We did shoot a little in the West Village; Village Cigars, Thompson Street, Jones Street, and MacDougal.

A: Our first thought for the film was to shoot in black and white on 16mm, but that idea fell by the wayside when we started designing shots.

Actress in the film Bonnie Rose, Bette Midler’s stand in for The First Wives Club, and Isn’t She Great, and Dodi Gamble in Inside Llewyn Davis, answered the following questions for me.

Q: If you had to describe the Coen Brothers and then Llewyn Davis in one word, what would they be?

A: It is very hard to say one word about the Coen Brothers…..

I would have to use two words about these two men who are iconic.

The Coen brothers are “Authentic Geniuses.”

The character of Llewyn Davis, is “resolute.”

The New York Film Festival (Sept. 27-Oct.13) is going on now. Los Angeles' own Rose Kuo (formerly director of the AFI FIlm Festival) has notched it up this year as our local newspaper L.A. Times has pointed out to us in perhaps a somewhat condescending way. Nyff was never a "quaint afterthought", but it was not what the Lincoln Center Film Society offered the trade with new offerings of films you can see in its spring festival New Directors/ New Directions. But this year, it is on the trade's map of top fall film festivals for the first time since 1984 when Blood Simple of the Coen Brothers made the trade realize its great value. Train Wrecks: My Favorite Stinkers (part two)
The Cool Ones (1967). Directed by Gene Nelson. Written by Nelson, Joyce Geller, Robert Kaufman.

Nothing ages more quickly and more embarrassingly than a movie or TV show which had worked so hard to be cool in its time. You disagree? Feathered hair, big lapels. Oh, God – mullets! You gonna honestly tell me that stuff still works for you as anything but a laugh-getter?

Lead times for some movies are so long, some crazes burn out between the pitch meeting and opening weekend. Roller disco was dying (if not dead) by the time Roller Boogie (1979) and Xanudu (1980) hit theaters, and did anybody still care about The Village People when Can’t Stop the Music (1980) had movie-goers wishing they could?

The only thing even more embarrassing is a movie that’s lethally uncool even before the first frame of film runs through the camera, not because it’s late to the party,...

Debbie Reynolds on TCM: The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Singing Nun
Pert, pretty, multi-talented, actress-singer-dancer-Hollywood collector Debbie Reynolds is Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Day on Friday, August 18, as TCM continues its "Summer Under the Stars" series. TCM is presenting 13 Debbie Reynolds movies. [Debbie Reynolds Movie Schedule.] Fans of Gene Kelly's Singin' in the Rain (1952) will be able to watch the romantic comedy-musical for the 118th time. I'm not one of them; in fact, I much prefer Kelly and Stanley Donen's On the Town (1949), and I'd say that George Sidney's Show Boat (1951) and Donen's Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) are my favorite musicals of the 1950s. But fan or no, there's much to enjoy in Singin' in the Rain, including Reynolds and Donald O'Connor's performances, several great songs from the 1920s, and Jean Hagen's high-pitched mix of Norma Talmadge, (the British) Mabel Poulton, and Corinne Griffith. The iconic "Singin' in the Rain" number is one of my least favorite...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Objects to Maria Shriver's Request for Spousal Support
Arnold Schwarzenegger is fighting Maria Shriver's request for spousal support. On Wednesday, July 20, the former California governor finally filed his response to his estranged wife's divorce petition. In the documents filed in Los Angeles through attorney Bob Kaufman, he asks a judge to deny her from any right to get spousal support.

The court filing also indicated that Arnold refuses to pay Maria's attorney fees, which she has asked for. The "Terminator" star wants each party to foot the bill for their own lawyers. The one thing he is in sync with his estranged wife is his request for joint legal and physical custody of their two minor children, Patrick and Christopher.

The former couple, who have been together for 25 years before separating, do not have a prenuptial agreement. Under California law, they are entitled to a 50/50 split of all earnings and property which are estimated to be worth around $400 million.

Arnold-Maria Divorce And Spousal Support
Arnold's Divorce Response -- Conflict Over Support

TMZ has learned ... Arnold Schwarzenegger has filed his response to Maria Shriver's divorce petition, and the former couple is at odds over whether Maria should get spousal support.

Arnold's lawyer, Bob Kaufman, checked the box on the legal docs asking the judge to terminate any right on Maria's part to get spousal support. Maria asked for spousal support in her petition.

Arnold -- like Maria -- is asking for joint custody of the couple's two minor children.

And there's another conflict. Maria is asking Arnold to pay for her attorney's fees. Arnold's response asks that the judge make each party foot the bill for their respective lawyers.

Maria Shriver Could Get More Than $350 Million In Divorce From Arnold Schwarzenegger, Say Sources!
Insiders say Arnold Schwarzenegger is ready to pay big for cheating on Maria Shriver with their housekeeper — and he’s going to cough up more half of his fortune! Should she forgive him?

Arnold Schwarzenegger knows he screwed up big time by fathering a child with his housekeeper while he was married to Maria Shriver and subsequently embarrassing his entire family, but he’s going to try to make it up to them — particularly Maria — by giving up the majority of his fortune in the divorce and not just the 50/50 required by California state law. That means Maria, 55, could stand to receive more than $350 million dollars!

“Arnold realizes he is to blame for the collapse of his marriage. Maria was a loving wife and mother, and he doesn’t think that any amount of money can minimize what he has put her through. He wants to do the right thing,...

Arnold and Maria Will Split Hundreds of Millions
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver will split around $400 million, and legally it's supposed to be divided  up 50/50, because we know there's no prenup. TMZ broke the story Friday that Maria filed for divorce and the division of property is yet to be determined. Because there is no prenup, under California law, all earnings and other property acquired during the marriage is considered community property, which means a 50/50 split. Arnold's worth is estimated at $300 million, while Maria's is around $100 million.

While Arnold’s still holding out hope for a reconciliation, Maria’s determined to get a divorce. And the former couple is deep into talks about how they’ll divide the family fortune.

The divorce is on! Arnold Schwarzenegger may be hoping he and his wife of 25 years Maria Shriver work things out but it’s not happening! RadarOnline.com reports that “progress is being made” in the couple’s divorce settlement talks. Although neither have filed for divorce, they’ve each hired very powerful attorneys – Laura Wasser for Maria and Bob Kaufman for Arnold.

Despite Arnold cheating on Maria for more than two decades, she has no intention of taking him to the cleaners. The mom-of-four is instead doing her best to keep costs low instead of draining Arnold of his $300 million dollar fortune.

Schwarzenegger Lawyers Up
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger has officially lawyered up, according to TMZ.

Last week, Schwarzenegger's longtime attorney Martin Singer spoke out on Schwarzenegger's behalf, but now TMZ is reporting that the embattled former governor--who fathered a love child with longtime household staffer Mildred Patricia Baena--has hired celebrity divorce attorney Robert Kaufman to represent him in his split from estranged wife Maria Shriver.

Kaufman, who has represented Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Simpson in their splits, is known for keeping his celebrity clients out of the press.

According to TMZ, he has already talked to Shriver's attorney Laura Wasser about "moving forward" with divorce negotiations.

Shriver reportedly retained "disso-queen" Wasser before revelations of Schwarzenegger's love child surfaced two weeks ago. Wasser has represented dozens of celebrities in their divorces, including Robyn Gibson, Kate Walsh, Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, and Kiefer Sutherland. Wasser, too, is known for maintaining a low profile for her clients.
