One morning, students find their homeroom teacher Tokuyama Daigoro's body on the floor of the classroom. The students hide their dead teacher's body.

Later, a safe at a jewelry store in Roppongi is broken into. Stolen from the safe is the diamond called "Besu". The "Besu" is one of three diamonds that makes up the "Kuraida Family's Three Sisters". The other two diamonds are "Ani" and "Kyasari". The diamond "Ani" was stolen from the jewelry store in Shibuya, that occurred a few days earlier. Several people believe the two diamond thefts were done by the same person(s), but Akiho mentions the techniques used by thieves are different. Yet, Akiho believes there must be a connection between the two cases.

Nagasato Daisuke is a 39-year old bachelor with an extremely negative attitude towards marriage. However, he truly believes that he'd "rather be alone." Averse to taking the risk of bringing in other people into his living space, he protects it as if it was his castle, and is fully enjoying his idiosyncratic single life. Kumagai Hanako, on the other hand, is a 32-year old divorcee who works for a major trading firm. She has her own distinct thoughts about being single, doesn't want to get married again, and already planning for her life after retirement. When these two meet, they fight constantly, but they're actually similar in a lot ways.

Following her parents' divorce Ann and her mother move to her maternal grandmother's house in Shimane Prefecture. Adding to the stress is how they are not integrating well at their new home. Ann's mother commits suicide. The consolation for Ann is school-mate Daigo who is loving and helpful, but that is soon to be taken away due to the new distance between them. They grow older and drift apart, but there is still love there when they do reunite.
