After three seasons on Max, the streamer has opted not to renew The Sex Lives of College Girls for a fourth season.

Following news of the show’s cancellation, co-creators Justin Noble and Mindy Kaling have taken to social media to honor the series.

Noble shared an Instagram post in which he said there are “discussions with some new potential homes for the show,” adding, “But regardless of what happens, I’m proud of this show and the work that so many incredibly talented people put into it.”

The showrunner said this was “not the outcome that I saw coming,” noting the series was “listed as the most watched or second most watched scripted show on the entire platform, for about 70 straight days.”

The Sex Lives of College Girls is shuttering its school doors at Max after three seasons on the streamer. Max will not be producing additional episodes of the coming of age drama, co-created and produced by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble.

Despite the show’s cancellation on Max, announced Tuesday, Warner Bros. Television is looking to keep the show alive on neighboring streamers. Kaling, for example, has a working relationship with Netflix. She co-created the Kate Hudson-starring series Running Point, released on Netflix last month, and the popular drama Never Have I Ever.

On Tuesday (March 18), it was announced that Max will not pick up the show for a fourth season. The show’s producers are reportedly attempting to re-home the series with Netflix, according to Deadline.

Creator Mindy Kaling has an established relationship with Netflix, as she has co-created and executive produced shows Never Have I Ever and Running Point with the streaming service.

Sex Lives ran a mostly cliffhanger-free third-season finale leading some viewers to wonder if this was the end of the show, even though the characters were only midway through their sophomore year and the series was pretty consistently near the top of Max’s top 10 list of most-viewed shows (though that didn’t translate to making Nielsen’s wider top 10 streaming charts).

Co-showrunner Justin Noble, who oversaw the show with Kaling, insisted at the time that the episode wasn’t meant to wrap up the series.

Classes and hookups will not resume on The Sex Lives of College Girls, which has been cancelled at Max after three seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

According to our sister site Deadline, which first reported the news, producer Warner Bros. Television is exploring opportunities to continue the series at another streamer such as Netflix, although it is considered “a long-shot,” per Deadline. A rep for Wbtv declined to comment.

“Sex Lives of College Girls” has been canceled at Max, Variety has confirmed.

The series aired for three seasons at the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service. Season 3 of the show debuted in November, with the season finale airing on Jan. 25. The show itself originally premiered on Max in 2021.

The Sex Lives of College Girls are wilder — and, frankly, furrier — than ever in the official trailer for the Max comedy’s third season.

The streamer announced on Wednesday that Season 3 will premiere Thursday, Nov. 21, with a new episode dropping weekly through Jan. 23. One change for the upcoming season? Episodes will roll out at 9/8c each week, rather than 3 am (as was the strategy for the first two seasons).

The only way is Essex. “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” Max’s cult hit comedy series, returns the week before Thanksgiving, the streaming service announced Wednesday. Max also released a new teaser trailer for Season 3 of executive producer Mindy Kaling’s series.

Things are typically wild as the girls return for sophomore year. Bela (Amrit Kaur) wants to hook up with the mascot, Franklin the Fox. Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) swipes right on Whitney’s (Alyah Chanelle Scott) dad. Normal stuff at Essex College.

Season 3 finds breakout star Renee Rapp transitioning to a recurring role and making her exit from the series during the season as she focuses on her music career. She is heavily featured in the trailer, though, cracking jokes and hugging her suitemates.

Essex College just lost one more student.

“The Sex Lives of College Girls” returns for Season 3, which also marks the exit of core cast member Reneé Rapp. Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and Alyah Chanelle Scott now lead the show.

Actress/singer Rapp appeared in “Mean Girls” and announced her departure from the Max series in 2023. Rapp starred as Leighton Murray, who comes out as queer in the first season of the college-set ensemble comedy.

“‘College Girls’ moved me out to L.A. and introduced me to some of my favorite people,” Rapp wrote on social media. “Two and a half years later, it’s given me y’all and this community. Thank you Mindy, Justin, and everyone at Max for believing in me. A lot of queer work gets belittled, but playing Leighton has changed my life.”

Rapp continued, “I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her.

The teaser for The Sex Lives of College Girls has premiered online, and fans are already mourning the loss of Leighton!

The third season will drop on Thursday, Nov. 21, with one new episode in the 10-episode set dropping each week at 9 p.m. Et through Jan. 23.

The coming-of-age series, following a group of students at New England’s prestigious Essex College, was created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble and originally starred Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott and Reneé Rapp as the core suitemates experiencing college life together.

But news broke over the summer of 2023 that Rapp, who has gone on to launch a hit music career, would be leaving the series during its third season. She will appear in a few episodes, as a recurring guest star, not a series regular, to set up her character Leighton Murray’s departure from Essex.

The Sex Lives of College Girls co-creator Justin Noble is assuring fans they haven’t seen the last of Reneé Rapp‘s Leighton, who is back for a handful of episodes to wrap up her storyline in Season 3.

News of the actress’ departure from the Max dramedy broke last year, with a Deadline exclusive report. At the time, it was revealed that the singer-songwriter would not be a series regular, readying to leave the show after a few episodes.

“[She] definitely still has some lessons and room to grow ahead of her,” Noble told Teen Vogue in a recent interview previewing the forthcoming third season. “She’ll be faced with a couple of big choices and she’ll have to make a couple of big decisions in all aspects of her life.”
