Actor Jensen Ackles, who has previously voiced Batman in animated films, was almost cast as Batman in the TV series Gotham Knights. Ackles was unable to join the show due to scheduling conflicts, but fans still hope to see him play the Dark Knight in the future. Gotham Knights co-creator Natalie Abrams didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye.

On the night of the drama’s series finale on the CW, Abrams — who created the DC Comics-based drama with Chad Fiveash and James Patrick Stoteraux — posted a heartfelt message Tuesday for her beloved “BatBrats” who were about to see their show end after one season.

The series from DC, Warner Bros. TV and Greg Berlanti Prods. was a respectable ratings performer but was canceled to make way for the network’s new (see: cheaper) business model.

“Gotham Knights is coming to an end,” Abrams said on Twitter. “It’s taken a while to accept this fact, to grieve the loss of something so unique and ethereal as this first project. From the moment I pitched Greg Berlanti the two sentences that would become this oddball underdog of a show, it no longer belonged to me.

Gotham Knights star Misha Collins recently shared his thoughts on the DC superhero drama's cancellation.

The actor, who portrays Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent on the show, released a statement on Twitter where he expressed disappointment in having his time playing the iconic DC character cut short. "Just got back on the grid after unplugging for a week to hear the news that [Gotham Knights] was canceled by [The CW] and won’t be able to find a new home," Collins' statement read. "I’m incredibly bummed, and selfishly disappointed to not be able to fully explore my 'villain arc,' but I’m proud of the show we made and so grateful to have been able to work with such a smart, caring, good group of people."

Last week was a good one for the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup, but not for The CW’s Gotham Knights, which was canceled after its freshman season. Today Misha Collins, who starred as the dashing, idealistic District Attorney and Gotham City mayoral candidate Harvey Dent, took to social media to reflect on the superhero series and thank its Bat Brat fans.

“I’m incredibly bummed, and selfishly disappointed to not be able to fully explore my ‘villain arc,'” he wrote on Instagram (see the post below), “but I’m proud of the show we made and so grateful to have been able to work with such a smart, caring, good group of people.”

Said “villain arc” was to be Dent’s transformation into the horribly disfigured and shunned Batman adversary Two-Face.

Gotham Knights will not return for season 2 on The CW. The newest DC show has been left in a state of limbo for a few weeks now as the network continues adjusting its programming approach. Gotham Knights premiered earlier this year and took a rather unique approach to its DC world in the sense that, unlike most CW DC shows, it doesn't hold any connections to the long-running Arrowverse.

While fellow DC series Superman & Lois will continue on with season 4, Deadline now reports that Gotham Knights has been cancelled at The CW following its one-season run. The show was a decent performer for the network, but with The CW significantly cutting down on its scripted content, it was unable to justify another season.

According to Deadline, the DC drama series will not return for a second season after being canceled by The CW. The first, and now final season, of Gotham Knights is expected to consist of 13 episodes, with Episode 12 "City of Owls" expected to air on the network on June 20. While Gotham Knights was canceled, two other scripted shows, Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, have been renewed for additional seasons. "We love all those shows, and they all do very well for us in different ways," said The CW’s Entertainment President Brad Schwartz in May, prior to the cancelation, regarding Superman & Lois, All American: Homecoming and Gotham Knights.

A disappointing aspect of the changes being made to both The CW and Warner Bros. Discovery has been the culling of many Dctv shows. Season 4 of Titans ended the series, Doom Patrol is due to wrap soon, while The Flash is more or less ending the Arrowverse. It's left many wondering if Dctv will indeed live on, or be tossed completely in the bin with the likes of Batwoman.

A new report from The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting there may be room for only one Dctv show moving forward. As of this writing, it's currently rumored only Superman & Lois or Gotham Knights will be renewed at the CW. If this is indeed the case, given the fan approval, critical acclaim and the potential the future holds, it's clear which series should be kept.

Unlike the majority of past CW DC shows, though, this series is firmly rooted in Gotham and centered around The Dark Knight — sort of. Like Batwoman before it, Gotham Knights is only tangentially connected to Batman, with the character existing in this universe but not being included as a main character. Gotham Knights is a half-decent DC universe story that's unfortunately couched in teen melodrama and color grading more irritating than atmospheric.

A new trailer for the Batman-inspired series Gotham Knights shows Bruce Wayne's son trying to prove his innocence in his father's murder. The CW has released a new trailer for the upcoming series, which is set to premiere on March 14. Just like other trailers for the series, it features Harvey Dent (Misha Collins) telling Bruce's son Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan) that his father has been murdered. Harvey later informs Turner that the supposed killers have been arrested.

The CW’s Gotham Knights has cast a pair of key recurring roles, with Ethan Embry and Sunny Mabrey joining the DC Comics drama.

The real-life married couple will play husband and wife on the series as well, with Mabrey debuting as Crystal Brown in the show’s fifth episode and Embry first appearing in episode six as Arthur Brown. In the comics, Arthur Brown is the alter ego of Batman villain Cluemaster.

“We were blown away by Sunny’s audition for Gotham Knights. Despite winding down on the DC TV brand, The CW is keeping the tradition alive with a new superhero drama on its way. For 2023, the network is bringing Gotham Knights to the programming slate, based in the world of Batman. Despite having the same name, Gotham Knights is not based on the video game that was released in 2022. While stemming from the Batwoman writers and producers, this is not a spinoff series, nor does it tie to any other Arrowverse show. The CW is officially premiering Gotham Knights on Tuesday, March 14 at 9Pm right after the Superman & Lois season 3 premiere.
