Donald Trump has been ruling like an authoritarian since retaking office in January, repeatedly thumbing his nose at Congress, the Constitution, and any other check on presidential power. Trump appeared to tease the notion of the United States becoming a full-fledged dictatorship while signing executive orders in the Oval Office on Monday.
Trump was answering questions about his administration’s military takeover of Washington, D.C., which he ordered despite crime declining in the nation’s capital, and which he has said he will likely expand to other cities, including Chicago.

The Pentagon has been planning to send the military to Chicago for weeks, The Washington Post reported. The deployment would be part of Donald Trump’s show of force against Democrat-run cities. The military’s actions in Chicago could then be a blueprint for rolling out similar occupations in other cities, officials told the paper.
Military leaders have considered multiple plans of action for Chicago, including sending thousands of National Guard troops in September. They have also considered sending active-duty troops to Chicago, although that outcome is less likely, sources told the Post.

Top Democrats are laying out the stakes of a national congressional redistricting fight, after Texas obeyed Donald Trump’s order to adopt a new, wildly gerrymandered congressional map in advance of the 2026 midterm elections. On a conference call organized by party chair Ken Martin, Democratic leaders justified their plan to respond to Texas’ provocation with an equally brazen redistricting effort in California — to “fight fire with fire,” as Gov. Gavin Newsom put it.
The fight is over creating partisan advantage in advance of the next year’s midterms, which will...

Illinois Governor Jb Pritzker blasted President Donald Trump after he threatened on Friday to target Chicago as the next city to send federal troops to, purportedly to fight crime, as he has done in other Democratic strongholds. Trump has deployed nearly 2,000 National Guard members in his current campaign in Washington, D.C., after deploying 2,000 in Los Angeles in June in the wake of protests over aggressive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) raids.

President Donald Trump has expanded his military campaign against the United States by deploying armed troops to yet another major metropolitan area, announcing on Monday that he is sending the National Guard into Washington, D.C., to “liberate” the city.
The D.C. operation, launched two months after the start of his Los Angeles crackdown, broadens a police-state-style domestic campaign that some senior Trump administration officials describe to Rolling Stone as a “shock and awe” show of force, a reference to the foreign war in Iraq that Trump has pretended to oppose.

Illinois Gov. Jb Pritzker isn’t pulling punches. He called Donald Trump a “cheater” and blasted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as a “joke” for their bizarre attempts to redistrict Texas in a way that would unfairly give Republicans more seats in Congress as the GOP tries to stave off a blue wave in the 2026 midterm elections.
Pritzker: "It's cheating. Donald Trump is a cheater. He cheats on his wives. He cheats at golf. And now he's trying to cheat the American people out of their votes."

Donald Trump and Republicans are nervous about the 2026 midterms. The president’s polling numbers are very bad (despite what he claims), and it doesn’t seem like Americans are thrilled with his lackeys in Congress who have supported the administration’s assault on Medicaid and other social services, his hardline immigration crackdown, or his chaotic approach to the economy. Democrats only need to flip a few seats to win back control of the House of Representatives, which would allow them to block Trump’s legislative agenda and launch investigations into his administration’s rank corruption.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to remove Democratic members of the state legislature from their offices and charge them with felonies after they fled the state. Two dozen Texas Democrats traveled to Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday to deny the Republican–controlled legislature the quorum it needs to pass an off-cycle redistricting measure aimed at securing Republicans additional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms.
“The derelict Democrat House members must return to Texas and be in attendance
when the House reconvenes at 3:00 Pm on Monday, August 4, 2025,” Abbott wrote in a letter issued on Sunday.

During a recent appearance on “The Bulwark” podcast, Mark Cuban revealed he was invited to submit himself for consideration to become former Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 presidential election. However, the “Shark Tank” star, an outward supporter of the Harris campaign, turned the offer down.
Interviewer Tim Miller opened the segment by prefacing that he had heard rumors at MSNBC that Cuban was tapped to join Harris on the campaign trail.
“There was some green room gossip at MSNBC,” Miller said. “I wouldn’t tell you this if it wasn’t pretty good. Somebody I kind of trust said that they asked you to send in VP vetting papers and you said, ‘No, the list would be too long.’ Is that true?”
Cuban confirmed the rumors to be true and elaborated on his decision to bow out of the race.

For legendary director and outspoken Democratic donor Rob Reiner, choosing sides between Bruce Springsteen and Donald Trump in their current war of words didn’t require much deliberation. “Bruce Springsteen is a hundred percent right,” he says, in an interview for an upcoming print issue of Rolling Stone. “I mean, you have to be a moron to not think that everything that Bruce Springsteen said is true. ABC shared some unwelcome news about Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday. The late-night TV show's audience is in for a long week, beginning tonight, May 12.
Jimmy Kimmel has done as good a job as anyone in late-night staying on top of President Donald Trump and his administration. So much so that Kimmel even becomes part of the story.
But don't expect anything like that to happen this week. ABC announced Jimmy Kimmel Live! will go dark this week with no new episodes.
Instead, rerurns are scheduled for Monday through Friday. It seems as if Kimmel and his team have been given a break as we quickly approach the summer months.

The documentary streaming boom is officially over, according to Academy Award-winning producer and Impact Partners co-founder Geralyn Dreyfous.
“The market for streamers is not coming back,” Dreyfous said during a panel discussion at Chicago’s Doc10 film festival over the weekend. “To go into these film festivals like Sundance and think that you are going to get a big sale is la la land (thinking). The numbers are just not there. One of 20 films is being bought out of Sundance. When we started Impact Partners, eight out of 10 of our films were being bought. That’s gone. Gone! Democrat Susan Crawford defeated Republican Brad Schimel in a race for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat that drew nationwide attention as an indicator of the political influence of Donald Trump’s key ally, Elon Musk.
Crawford was projected the winner by NBC News within an hour after polls closed, and the AP projected the race about 20 minutes later. Major cable news networks all carried the returns, unusual for an off-year statewide judicial race.
But the election not only determined the balance of the Wisconsin’s highest court , but it is being closely analyzed by pundits as it is the first statewide race since Trump took office in January.
With Crawford expected to get a comfortable victory, the results were a rebuke to Musk, who had poured tens of millions into the campaign and offered $1 million checks to two state voters at a rally on Sunday. His Super Pac offered $50 for photo uploads outside polling locations.

Burton left the network after it mandated Covid vaccines for all employees, and Smith currently works for the network’s ESPN channel as a sports broadcaster.
But he has been vocal in the past year about wanting to branch out and grow his career, thus his spot on daytime, a new book, and rumors of political aspirations.
Another Actor For President?

TV personality Dr. Phil McGraw joined U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents on a ride-along Sunday as part of a nationwide crackdown targeting undocumented immigrants, including individuals with criminal records.
During the ride-along in Chicago, McGraw witnessed a tense moment as Ice officers arrested Sam Seda, an undocumented immigrant from Thailand, who was wanted on charges of child sex crimes. British Columbia has given Hollywood producers an early Christmas present by boosting the foreign film tax credit for major studios and streamers that shoot locally.
The latest provincial budget has raised the production services tax credit for foreign projects shot locally from 28 percent to 36 percent from Jan. 1, 2025. And tentpole projects with local expenditures exceeding $200 million will receive an additional two percent bonus.
The film tax credit boost follows B.C., which depends heavily on Hollywood film and TV production produced locally, feeling the impact of industry shutdowns during the pandemic and last year’s dual Los Angeles strikes. “Our province is home to one of the busiest film and TV production centers in North America,” B.C. premier David Eby said in a statement as Los Angeles productions increasingly opt to shoot outside of California in rival locales, including Canada.

On the eve of a jury trial in June 2017, Disney settled a defamation lawsuit brought by a beef company for a whopping $177 million. The case stemmed from a series of ABC News reports in 2012 fronted by star anchor Diane Sawyer that dubbed the processed meat “pink slime.” At the time, it marked the largest settlement or jury award ever for a libel case and has since been eclipsed only by Alex Jones ($1.438 billion to Sandy Hook families) and Fox News ($787.5 million to Dominion Voting Systems).

In an increasingly tit-for-tat race for production dollars, the California Film Commission has lured Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey to relocate from Florida.
The title, which will get roughly $20.6 million, was one of ten projects announced by the state’s film office on Wednesday that will receive tax credits for shooting in California. Other productions include an untitled Disney miniseries ($14.7 million), Whalefall ($10.4 million) and NCIS: Origins ($5.7 million).
As runaway production and Hollywood cost-cutting threatens the state’s hold on the film and television business, Gov. Gavin Newsom in October proposed vastly increasing the cap on production tax credits from $330 million to $750 million a year. If passed, the subsidy would be the most generous offered by any state except Georgia, which doesn’t have a ceiling on the amount it gives to productions per year.
Further changes to the program have yet to be finalized. Potential amendments could affect the maximum...

Donald Trump’s big victory and horrific agenda — for military-led mass deportation, accelerating climate change, rolling back reproductive rights, and pursuing dictatorial powers — sent Democratic governors leaping to the barricades. Or, at least, the microphones.
In the days following the 2024 election, California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared he’d invoke a special session of the state legislature to help Trump-proof the Golden State. Gov. Tim Walz, the vanquished vice presidential candidate, returned home quoting Bob Dylan — promising Minnesota would be a “shelter from the storm” — and pledging to “stand up and fight” Trump’s “hateful agenda.

A film and TV tax credit initiative designed to juice production and soundstage construction in California has lured Suits: L.A. to shoot in the state.
The California Film Commission on Tuesday announced that the spinoff to the former USA Network series turned streaming juggernaut will get nearly $12 million, thanks to a program that incentivizes the construction of additional soundstages.
Other projects that will get tax credits to film in California include a Janis Joplin biopic, Community — The Movie and Killing Gawker. In all, the 19 titles — three big-budget features, 15 independent films and a TV series — were granted $51.6 million in incentives. They’re expected to employ 2,768 crewmembers, 1,086 castmembers and 16,997 background performers over 618 filming days, with the expectation they’ll spend over $284 million in the state.
Production has been slow to rebound after last year’s dual strikes from actors and writers that immediately followed belt-tightening by studios as they pivoted toward profitability of their streaming businesses.
Update (8/21 at 6 p.m. Et): Tuesday’s DNC audience viewership enjoyed a slight bump from Monday’s broadcast, with 20.6 million tuning in across the Nielsen-measured networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Scripps News, CNN, CNNe, Fox Business, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, Newsmax, NewsNation and PBS (per Variety). Previously (8/21 at 12:20 p.m. Et): The Democratic National Convention on Tuesday featured a pair of barn-burner speeches from former first lady Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama. The two closed out a day of excitement at Chicago’s United Center, which also included a very meme-able (and playlist-worthy) roll call and additional speeches by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Senator s Chuck Schumer, Tammy Duckworth, and Bernie Sanders, several Republicans who’ve pledged their support to Kamala Harris, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff, to name a few. The Obamas were the main event of the evening, which was themed “A...

Stephen Colbert threw shade at the Democratic National Convention audience’s hypocrisy toward billionaires after the crowd cheered for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ anti-oligarch remarks but then celebrated Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker for flexing his billionaire status at Donald Trump.
“Bernie got us psyched up for attacking billionaires, but we like this guy! It’s an emotional and moral rollercoaster,” Colbert said, mocking the audience in his opening monologue for “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” as he recapped night two of the DNC.
At the time, the host was highlighting the most popular speeches of the night when he pointed out the similar reactions to Pritzker and Sanders, despite the two politicians having opposing backgrounds and ideologies when it comes to the wealth gap in the U.S.

“This election is going to be close,” Michelle Obama told the Democratic National Convention tonight in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois of the rough race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The former First Lady has pretty finely attuned political antenna, but on the second day of the DNC her speech tonight was a landslide winner.
Don’t believe us, believe the 44th President of the United States. Or as Barack Obama said Tuesday at the top of his own speech before Democrats and the viewing world: “I’m the only person stupid enough to speak after Michelle Obama.”
On any other night from any other speaker, the words “Hope is making a comeback” would have been the line of the night. But that was just an obviously uninhibited Michelle Obama’s warm up as she offered strong support to Vice President Harris and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

The Democratic National Convention will continue Tuesday night at Chicago’s United Center, where Patti Labelle and rapper Common will soon take the stage as the night’s headline performers. They will share the same stage with a roster of high profile politicos led by former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
Billboard broke the news on Tuesday citing confirmation from campaign officials. Both Labelle and Common, who is a hometown hero after having grown up on the city’s South Side, were photographed during their respective sound checks earlier in the day. They follow hot on the heels of performers Jason Isbell and Mickey Guyton, who took the stage on the DNC’s opening night. Legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor was set as the night’s final performer but was cut due to time constraints as the program ran long, officials confirmed.

Former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff are among the speakers scheduled for the second night of the Democratic National Convention, while organizers are pledging changes to try to prevent delays.
The first night’s lineup ran into delays, to the point that President Joe Biden’s speech got pushed out of primetime on the East Coast, and finished after that key time period in the Central time zone. The delays occurred even as some parts of the lineup, including a performance by James Taylor, were scrapped.
Alex Hornbrook executive director of the Democratic National Convention Committee, said that they made “some real-time schedule adjustments last night” and that they were making some “other adjustments this evening, including beginning at 5:30 to make sure that we stay on track for that tonight.”

Chicago — “The Daily Show” kicks off in Chicago on Monday with Governor J.B. Pritzker taking show correspondent Jordan Klepper around Chicago. And that meant several bars, including The Gman Tavern, Murphy’s Bleachers and Guthries Tavern. While they participated in some daydrinking, Klepper got Pritzker to open up on a few key issues — such as whether Chicago-based Emmy winner “The Bear” should be considered a comedy.
“I don’t know why it’s in the comedy category, but I got to say it’s one of the best shows on TV, and it shows off Chicago,” Pritzker told Klepper in the segment, set to run on Monday’s show. Variety has a first look at the clip, which you watch below ahead of the governors appearance at the Democratic National Convention.

CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” are set to travel to Chicago for a week of shows during the Democratic National Convention next week. On the docket: A Kamala Harris biofilm created by “The Daily Show” team and a guest list on “The Late Show” that includes Hillary Rodham Clinton and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
The two shows’ DNC plans dwarf what they ultimately were able to do last month during the Republican National Convention. In particular, “The Daily Show” had planned to hail that week from Milwaukee, but then the assassination attempt on Donald Trump changed those plans. Instead, “The Daily Show” canceled its Monday telecast that week, and kept to its usual New York City homebase the rest of the week.
This time out, “The Daily Show’s” “Indecision 2024” coverage will include four nights at the Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago.

A domain investor has cashed in a big bet, selling the domain name HarrisWalz.com for $15,000.
Domain owner Jeremy Greene Eche bought it for around $9 in 2020.
Eche, a New York City trademark lawyer, bought several domains around the time of the 2020 election, he told ABC Audio. He focused on candidates who were likely to run in the future.
“So I just looked up every heartland governor and senator I could think of,” he said. “I got a bunch of midwestern politicians.”
Eche also bought addresses that paired Harris’ name with Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman. He tried to buy HarrisShapiro.com, a domain tied to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, but it had already been registered and purchased.
“You just have to hope you hit the jackpot when you start buying those names,” he said.

As the American political landscape drastically shifted and the Democratic party breathed a sigh of relief when President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid, his successor’s campaign swiftly began to take shape. Many elements seemed familiar from past election cycles — the canvassing and relentless emails or text messages, or both. But a July 29 evening gathering on Zoom presented something new in the presidential campaign cycle when it brought, as one famous speaker put it, a “rainbow of beige” men that counted nearly a dozen A-list Hollywood celebrities and major political figures among them to raise funds for Vice President Kamala Harris’ nascent campaign.
The “White Dudes For Harris” Zoom meeting was a feel-good, self-aware round-robin of famous L.A.- and D.C.-based men alternately talking about Harris with great passion (Sean Astin’s passionate speech stood out on this front); being a white dude (Jeff Bridges, “the Dude” himself,...

Scrolling through the coverage of the Tim Walz VP announcement Tuesday morning, I received a message from a friend, a prominent Jewish American doctor who identifies as a moderate.
“This makes me very sad,” she wrote.
The friend had already been teetering on the cliff’s edge about Trump, believing him a better choice on antisemitism for her family, which includes a daughter studying on a hotbed college campus. Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, opting against Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro pushed her over that edge; to this friend, it was evidence the candidate had caved to anti-Jewish forces. And who’s to say she wouldn’t do that in office, too? “I didn’t say she was antisemitic,” she clarified. “I said that she could not stand up to those who are.”
I fought back vigorously.
Like Shapiro, Walz has been outspoken on antisemitism and the horrors of Oct.

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate in her 2024 presidential bid.

Exclusive: If all goes to plan, America and the world will know in the next few hours who Kamala Harris has picked to be her running mate against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance. However, in the corridors of Hollywood power and money, an overwhelming favorite choice has emerged.
“Josh Shapiro,” one agency executive declares in a statement echoed around town today. “Pennsylvania wins the election,” the exec promptly added of why the Keystone Stone state’s governor would be the best fit for the Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee’s just over two-week-long White House bid in a still tight Electoral College battle with Trump.
With the Veep decision coming down to the wire ahead of the Democrats’ convention in Chicago starting on August 19, Gov. Shapiro, along with Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az), individually met with the vice president over the weekend at her official residence near DC.

Barack and Michelle Obama have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. On MSNBC’s Morning Joe Monday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear ripped into Sen. J.D. Vance, who former President Trump has selected to be his running mate. Vance, who framed himself as a child of Appalachian Kentucky in his best-selling memoir Hillbilly Elegy, does not speak for that community, Beshear argued.
“I want the American people to know what a Kentuckian is and what they look like,” Beshear told the MSNBC hosts. “Because let me just tell you that J.D. Vance ain’t from here.”
If it sounded like a stump speech, that might not be a coincidence. In the days since President Biden announced his plans to end his reelection bid and put his support behind Harris, Morning Joe has become the platform of choice for those in the mix to be Harris’ VP nominee.
Beshear was asked by Willie Geist whether it was a job that would interest...
