The Indie Film Business Tries on New and Old Business Models as Uncertain AFM Hits Las Vegas
Image
In recent years, the film and TV business has been living under an ever-mutating version of the apocryphal Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times,” and the American Film Market — which runs from Nov. 5-10 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas — has not been immune. But not all the effects have been negative.

During the peak years of the streaming business, when Netflix, Amazon, Apple and most of the major legacy studios were trying to build out exclusive content catalogs for their VOD platforms, the hottest titles often sold their global rights long before they reached AFM. In other instances, studios would insist that their domestic VOD release come first, undermining the value of international theatrical sales. The first was a net good for people making the projects. Neither was good for smaller buyers or AFM.

“The relevance of the market was reduced when sales agents and...

How ‘Land of Bad’ Distributor The Avenue Is Disrupting the Action Thriller Space
Image
It’s been four years since The Avenue first launched, and the indie distributor just scored its first top 10 film with William Eubank’s “Land of Bad.”

The action flick starring Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle and Milo Ventimiglia opened on Feb. 16, had the fourth-highest per screen average over the holiday weekend and was the only independent film in the top 10.

While indie films in awards contention can often make a modest box office dent, it’s unusual for an action film like “Land of Bad” to reach such heights: the actioner’s four-day total on opening weekend was $2.1 million from 1,057 screens.

President of domestic marketing and distribution JJ Caruth says the box office success of “Land of Bad” is a strong signal that audiences are hungry for more action-packed movies. “I’m just happy to see an independent film succeed at the box office. It’s...

The Avenue Lands North American Rights to ‘Old Guy’ (Exclusive)
Image
The Avenue has landed North American rights to the action comedy “Old Guy,” starring Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu and Cooper Hoffman.

Simon West directed the film, while “The Last Son” scribe Greg Johnson penned the script.

The film follows aging contract killer Danny Dolinski (Waltz), who still believes he’s the best at what he does. Stuck at a dead end but vying for the love of club manager Anata (Liu), Danny is thrilled when The Company pulls him back in the field — but it’s only to train Gen Z newcomer Wihlborg (Hoffman), a prodigy assassin with an attitude. The mismatched pair is asked to eliminate top members of a competing crime syndicate and, in the process, uncover their employer’s true motive: removing the old guard in a full takeover. However, The Company didn’t anticipate that Danny’s experience, coupled with Wihlbord’s brilliance, could enable them...

Berlin: Why Streamers’ Belt Tightening Casts A Shadow Over Indies
Image
The European Film Market is off to a strong start, buoyed by post-strike optimism and a truly impressive lineup of projects on offer in Berlin this year, including available indie movies with the A-list draws of stars such as Margot Robbie, Dave Bautista, Scarlett Johansson, and Will Smith. Coming off a solid Sundance and improving box office figures, both in the U.S. and Europe, hope appears to be slowly returning to an indie film industry that seemed near the brink just six months ago.

But many EFM sellers still see a cloud over the horizon with the unresolved issue of the home entertainment market, particularly the all-important pay-one window. Ancillary revenues have always been the true driver of the indie market, but as streaming comes to dominate post-theatrical exploitation and the biggest platforms are pulling back on how much independent fare they buy, many are questioning how indie movies can make the numbers work.

The Black Demon trailer: Josh Lucas battles a giant shark in April release
Image
Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon is set to reach theatres on April 28th, and I’ve been anxious to see a trailer for this one because the only publicity stills released up to this point have only shown lead actor Josh Lucas (The Forever Purge) and his character’s family standing on dry land. Now, the moment I’ve been waiting months for has arrived. IGN got the exclusive first look at a trailer for The Black Demon, and this finally gives the sight of Lucas and other characters out on the water, dealing with a “big ass shark”! You can watch the trailer in the embed above.

The Black Demon marks the first feature writing credit for Boise Esquerra. The story Esquerra crafted begins when oilman Paul Sturges takes his family on vacation to Bahia Azul.

The Black Demon: Josh Lucas shark thriller shifts its release date
Image
Exactly two months ago today, we heard that Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon was going to be reaching theatres on April 21st – a date that would, unfortunately, put it in direct competition with the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise. Now we’ve learned that The Black Demon has wisely decided to give Evil Dead Rise a little space, shifting its release date back one week to April 28th. Now we just need to see a trailer for this thing.

The Black Demon marks the first feature writing credit for Boise Esquerra. The story Esquerra crafted begins when oilman Paul Sturges takes his family on vacation to Bahia Azul. There, the coastal town he and his wife once knew has mysteriously crumbled and the locals are nowhere to be found. Paul starts off his day...

The Black Demon image: Josh Lucas and family might be lunch in shark thriller
Image
Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s upcoming movie The Black Demon is a shark thriller, but you probably wouldn’t guess that from the promotional images that have been released. Here’s the first one, showing star Josh Lucas (The Forever Purge) standing on dry ground. Now another image from The Black Demon has been unveiled by USA Today, and this one also shows Lucas standing on dry ground. This time he’s joined by co-stars Fernanda Urrejola (Cry Macho) and Venus Ariel (Dmz). The new image can be found at the bottom of this article.

The Black Demon has a theatrical release date of April 21, 2023 (the same day Evil Dead Rise will be reaching theatres), so we should be seeing a trailer for this one soon. Then we’ll finally get some glimpses of this movie’s shark action.

The Black Demon: Josh Lucas shark movie gets same release date as Evil Dead Rise
Image
Ten months have gone by since we saw a first look image from Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon – and that was actually the last time we heard anything about the movie, so I had forgotten about it. Thankfully, our friends at Bloody Disgusting were able to dig up the information that The Black Demon has a theatrical release date of April 21, 2023. Which will, unfortunately, put it in direct competition with the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise.

Evil Dead Rise was originally going to be an HBO Max release, but it went over so well with test screening audiences that the decision was made to send it to theatres. So now it’s on a collision course with The Black Demon. Bloody Disgusting was also able to find out that The Black Demon will be...
