Demon Slayer Anime Misses #1 Spot in New Official Streaming Rankings
Image
A major streaming service recently published its yearly anime rankings based upon viewership data for 2024. Abema, often described as the "Netflix of Japan," made note of not only what shows on its platform were most-watched and most commented on, but also that it saw huge growth in anime viewing on the platform as a whole.

Via Japanese news site Oricon, Abema's first-place spot for the most streamed anime of 2024 went to Oshi no Ko Season 2, which may not be a major surprise given that Season 1 was the most-watched show on the platforms for 2023's ranking as well. In fact, the first episode of the newest season was the most-watched season premiere in the platform's history for anime viewership. The second season of Oshi no Ko has been very well-received overall, adapting the entirety of the "Tokyo Blade" arc -- widely viewed as among the best storylines in the series.

Top 10 Best Deredere Girls in Anime, Ranked
Image
While plenty of anime fans love a villainess as an ironic waifu or favorite character, fans also adore more conventional Best Girls who have a wholesome, upstanding personality. Most often, this translates into the deredere archetype, one of the mildest and most charming -dere archetypes of them all. The deredere archetype describes anyone who is a kindhearted, selfless, and good-natured lover of all.

Derederes lack the extremes or quirks of the other -dere types, such as a tsundere's hot temper, a kuudere's aloof nature, or a dandere's timid ways. In some ways, that makes the deredere type the vanilla -dere type, but plain doesn't mean boring. To that point, a variety of the most popular, beloved anime girls fit the deredere archetype as friendly, emotionally gushy characters who have plenty of love to give. At times, an uncomplicated deredere character is exactly what an anime fan wants to see while...

5 Anime Characters You Would Trust With Money (& 5 You Would Want to Avoid)
Image
There are all kinds of ways to explain how responsible or not an anime character is, such as how good they are with money. Whether or not anime characters think a lot about finances and good spending habits, it's usually easy to tell who would be smart with their hard-earned money and who would blow it all in an afternoon. Being financially responsible is often connected to whether a character has good impulse control and a long-term view of their lives.

An anime character can probably be trusted with money for a few reasons, such as if they're smart and practical in general, or if poverty has forced them to appreciate the true value of money. Such characters would definitely earn an allowance and make the most of it, while other anime characters would go wild with any cash given to them and fail to save up money for an emergency.

'I Lost 10 kg in 2 Months': Oshi no Ko Actor Reveals Role Preparation for the Series' Strangest Character
Image
The Oshi no Ko franchise recently announced that Japanese comedian Noda Crystal will be portraying the role of Pieyon in the continuation of Oshi no Ko's live-action adaptation. In a recent interview, Crystal discusses how he worked tirelessly in order to "tone up" for the role.

Oshi no Ko fans know Pieyon as the eccentric physical trainer who steps in to help Ruby Hoshino and Kana Arima cultivate attention for their revival of B-Komachi -- the idol group originally led by Ruby's mother, Ai. Per Mantan Web, Crystal explained how he trained rigorously prior to his audition. "I think there were many candidates for the role of Pieyon," he stated. "I won out, or rather, it was my turn. I'm glad I trained hard. I lost about 10 kg in two months" (equivalent to roughly 22 pounds). To show the results of his training, Crystal released new cast images of himself,...

The 25 Most Evil Anime Villains Ever, Ranked
Image
In Japanese anime, a villain's depravity was usually intended to make the hero look better in comparison. Though sometimes given sympathetic qualities, they're meant to represent forces fundamentally opposed to the beliefs of the hero and audience. In this regard, a villain was almost as responsible for making a protagonist likable as the hero themselves.

However, only a few anime villains could claim their place among the most sinister and unapologetically violent characters in anime. Many anime villains demonstrated the depths of their evil and what they would have accomplished without the hero's epic intervention, making them the most evil anime characters in both the medium and all fiction.

Updated on November 19th, 2024 by Louis Kemner: This list of the most evil anime characters of all time has been expanded with five more examples of anime villainy and now conforms to Cbr's current publication standards.

Most Overused Romance Tropes in Shojo Anime
Image
Not all tropes are received the same way. Toxic tropes pop up often in all genres and anime demographics, and sometimes viewers love them because they're dramatic and toxic. Others find them taxing and overplayed, with certain tropes turning off potential viewers from watching a series. No genre is defined purely by its tropes, but it's undeniable that shojo anime is rife with them.

When used sparingly, tropes can be a great shorthand to clue the audience in to what a story is attempting to convey, either with its characters or its themes. When they are too heavily utilized, however, they can make the story feel uninspired. Whether the trope has come to be received positively or negatively by audiences, its impact on the narrative can sometimes come to define a series that uses it.

Updated on November 17, 2024, by Lauren Younkin: Though shojo anime tends to be comprised of many feel-good series,...

Oshi no Ko Author Teams Up With Hit Battle Manga Artist For New Exciting Fantasy Series
Image
With Oshi no Ko releasing its final chapter this week, eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot glimpses at a new fantasy manga teased coming in Spring 2025. As spotted on an announcement page for Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump and shared by Manga Mogura of X (formerly Twitter) Aka Akasaka is reportedly set to work with Ajichika, the four-person art team behind Record of Ragnarok, on a new fairytale adventure. Given Ajichika's excellent action and character designs and Akasaka's penchant for cerebral storytelling and adding depth and intrigue to the saccharine visual, Weekly Young Jump may have a new hit coming.

Weekly Young Jump is the Shueisha seinen periodical known for releasing long-running hits such as Kingdom, Golden Kamuy, Tokyo Ghoul, Real, and many more, with Akasaka being a regular contributor to their serials at this point. With Oshi no Ko, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, and Renai Daik all published by Akasaka in Weekly Young Jump,...

The Best Anime & Manga Time Skips, Ranked
Image
Stories of all kinds, including anime, will sometimes jump ahead in the timeline to fast-forward the narrative to the next big event. If nothing of interest is going to happen between two events that are months or years apart, then anime will treat fans to something like a "three years later..." time skip. By now, the time skip trope has become well-established, and it's more than a narrative shortcut to reach the next story arc.

In addition to preserving pacing, time skips are an exciting opportunity to show the characters glowing up or even the setting changing in a matter of seconds. Such time skips may happen between seasons of an anime to make things feel like a fresh start in the next anime, with the characters being older, stronger, and wiser for a new challenge. The best time skips are measured not in how much time passed, but what...
